Book Description
It's been almost seven years since I wrote Debt and Delusion. So naturally, readers have a right to ask, "Why produce an updated version at this time?" There are at least three reasons, the cheapest of which is that the author is surprised and flattered to find that it is in demand and there has long ceased to be any supply.
More than that, like an abandoned mine, the book stands as a monument to what was already known about the global credit expansion and the strains in the financial system before the halving of equity market prices from the early 2000 peaks. Most importantly, and sad to say, this equity market trauma foreshadows even more disastrous results of the financial folly that has reached proportions unimaginable in the summer of 1998. And so, the primary function of the book -- "as a timely warning of the perils that lie ahead" -- remains valid.
Debt and Delusion exposes serious flaws in the development of the global financial system starting in the early 1990s, singling out the world's largest central banks for special criticism. Their negligent oversight has permitted an explosion of corporate and household credit that has fueled a succession of false markets in stocks, bonds, and property. Alarmed by the monster so created, the U.S. Federal Reserve has spent much of the past five years staving off the evil day when foolish lending turns into bad debt.
Far from being the architects of economic stability and low inflation, the world's central bankers have ushered in a new era of financial fragility and latent instability. Innovations in the use of derivatives, structured products, and other complex financial instruments have been applauded by the central banks on narrow technical criteria. But these supposed bastions of conservatism have failed to comprehend the wider implications for financial stability.
From poorly documented home loans to sub-prime auto loans to subordinated corporate debt and junk bonds, permanently easy access to credit has compromised economic management in the U.S., U.K., and other English-speaking nations and has fostered an illusion of prosperity and well being.
Lamentably, this staggering collective flight from reason has been endorsed by the economics establishment.
The failure of many of the finest economic minds to engage with the rapid evolution of our financial structures and institutions has led to a superficial assessment of this unprecedented credit experiment. Only now, as various credit markets face the inevitable tests of higher interest rates and the realistic pricing of credit risks, is the threat of a pandemic of debt-related distress beginning to be taken seriously. Government budgets, already strained by the weight of social support, have limited scope to respond.
In short, tougher economic times lie ahead, when personal debts will hang more onerously than for 75 years. Debt and Delusion recommends a hasty! reappraisal of the debt requirements of corporations and households alike.

Where is the Love? - It's In This Book.......2005-04-13
Meeting Ms. Love will have you sold on anything she could write. She is a beautiful, smart, and funny; not to mention a classy woman. Her book is factually correct - it's relevant and plays a valuable role in financial planning. Many books are written from the stand point of expert to desperate reader. This book take is from a person facing financial challenges to finding the answers to relieve their stress. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THIS BOOK. It's original, accurate, and significant. Ms. Love has appeared as the guest of attorneys and lectured alongside a US Federal Bankruptcy Court Judge. They all praised her book (as anyone who has followed her career knows).
When you're looking to find something wrong you will. Clearly you didn't read your review because it's redundant "she self-published herself" and grammatically incorrect, so who are you to criticize. I think this has more to do with gorilla behavior that speaks about on her web site than with the book. Further proving her point about low lives.
You can trust that this author is genuine and the book is great! Well done Tiffany and don't allow these gorilla's to deter you from helping readers who need this information. Fight them back!
This Book Prepares You For Financial Reality.......2005-04-12
THIS BOOK IS OUTSTANDING. You would have to be a board angry lawyer not to like this book. There are plenty of errors in every book you read - if you truly read. What she does is provide the raw facts on what happens during a bankruptcy proceeding. If you read closely the forms she filed in bankruptcy court you see the name of her previous attorney (luckily she lives in the state of California). IT'S THE RAW FACTS. I took control of my bankruptcy case after my lawyer kept charging, charging, charging, and charging. He had a lot of errors too, one that I had the money in bankruptcy to pay him over $4,000 above his base fee. I also purchased this book after reading reviews and meeting this author, who told me exactly what I needed to do and she was absolutely right. She told me how they charge people in bankruptcy, how creditors will try to take your property and how to stop it. This book is a great deal for anyone who has dealt with lawyers who rip people off in order to keep a job. Anyone looking to seriously represent themselves MUST HAVE THIS BOOK.
Gorilla Law isn't Guerilla Law.......2005-03-25
After reading another customer review of this book I was so impressed that I ordered it with next day delivery. It sounded like exactly the kind of book I've been looking for. But I made the mistake of not reading an excerpt first and wound up wasting almost forty dollars.
This book is published by the author herself, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing except for the fact that the text is riddled with elliptical and grammatical errors. Nearly every paragraph has at least one error in it. The printing quality is poor and fuzzy, looking as though it were taken from a bubble jet master copy. The listing of Federal court addresses goes for several pages and is broken into two columns. But apparently the page breaks were set up incorrectly because the listings go down column one all the way to the end of the section and then go to column two at the beginning of the same section.
I could have lived with even these errors since they're just copy editing mistakes, but then I noticed other errors that made me wonder why this woman ever thought she could write any kind of book at all, let alone a technical book on a subject concerning the reader's personal finances. For example, when writing about filing for bankruptcy without a lawyer, the author uses the term Gorilla Law. I think she may have meant Guerilla Law...
Would you take legal advice from a person who wrote like this? I hope not. The lesson I took is that I should never buy a book based solely on customer reviews. If I had taken the time to read an excerpt, I would have avoided a lot of frustration and wasted money.
Must Have For Stopping Foreclosure.......2004-11-30
There are three great books on the market today and I say don't shop around any more. The two best bankruptcy books on the market have been written by women. I purchased Peggy Palm's book first and found it very informative and insightful. I'm attempting to the stop foreclosure of my home. I then purchased Tiffany Love's book, surviving financial disasters, to get the bankruptcy forms on CD Rom and then learned that she too filed for bankruptcy and included her legal pleadings. If you want to stop foreclosure, get Ms. Love's book for sure as it is "hands on", but I find myself frequently referring back to the information in Peggy's to gain an additional perceptive. Money Troubles is another great book that provides wonderful information and exceeds the scope of Peggy's book, because it covers everything inside and out of bankruptcy, like Tiffany's book. Which some people I think may find too technical, but if you're doing battle like I am with creditors the information is right on target. All three will cost you less than $100 far less than an attorney's consultation fee. My verdict: Peggy's book for the legal advice, Tiffany's book for insight and roadmap, Money Trouble for everything else even after bankruptcy. The others are crap!
Every Home Should Have This Book.......2004-11-07
My story is interesting as to how I came about this book. First, this book has more information inside than what the title suggests. You will get your moneies worth and more out of this book. From buying/selling property to reducing mortgage payments to how to stop credit card companies and lenders in their tracks. I saw the author on election day in New York. Although I attended another lecture, I had the opportunity to meet her during the break. She is absolutely lovely and charming. What a perfect name Love. A young woman with no money and in financial straits begged the organizers to for Surviving Financial Disasters. Once they made financial arrangements Ms. Love walked over to the young woman, handed her a copy of the book and signed it. The young lady jumped up and down. She literally cried. I was so impressed that I purchased a copy of this book and WOW! This young woman is certainly taking over our hearts and the world.
Customer Reviews:
Tedious and Academic.......2002-11-18
If you are an economist you might find this book readable. If you are not trained in the dismal science you might just find this book to be dismal itself.
Far too often the author asserts points and then asks the reader to take his assumptions on faith while he builds up to his grand conculsions. This can serious hamper the lay reader in being able to follow the arguments made. Those with a more in depth understanding of fiscal policy might just find the conclusions themselves to be faulty and un practicle.
Written in 1996 this book is already out of date and rapidly becoming more of a hostorical document than a current events book.
Needs a "Caution" sign.......2002-03-15
If you thought a book with a foreword by John Kenneth Galbraith would be a tax-and-spend, big-government screed ... well, in this case you would be right. The authors are probably too oblivious to even be embarrassed by the wrong-headed interpretations they put on such matters as productivity and the expected unending upward slope of interest rates to favor "the lenders." This is ham-handed analysis, often shockingly simplistic and tendentious, and now getting dated of course. But I give the book one star for at least touching on some interesting subjects and being reasonably readable, even if one must be cautious about its interpretations. I bought my copy remaindered for about three bucks -- about the right price.

The Working Mother's Guilt Guide.......2000-03-22
I was given this book 9 years ago when my oldest was born. As a 40-something first-time mother and professional woman (CPA) it really resonated with me. I picked it up again (planning to pass it on to a pregnant professional 40-something friend of mine), re-read it, and decided I couldn't part with it! I recommend it as a baby-shower gift (she'll have enough drawstring gowns). Many of us baby-boomer moms think we can be June Cleaver/Donna Reed AND Sandra Day O'Connor AND Golda Meir AND Martha Stewart at the same time. Well, guess what. This book very cleverly lampoons that myth while making you feel OK about what you are accomplishing.
Book Description
If Steve Earle weren't a living, breathing person, he'd be a character in a blues song -- a raucous ballad about a gifted rebel who drank too much, lost most of his women in a blizzard of crack and cocaine addiction, and always came out on the wrong side of the law. Somewhere in the midst of all this, he also managed to weld rock to country, the Beatles to Springsteen, and bluegrass to punk, establishing himself among the most thoroughly original and politically astute musicians of his generation. Granted unrestricted access to Steve and his family and friends, Lauren St John has given us a sometimes shocking, often moving, and completely unvarnished biography of one of America's most talismanic sons.
Customer Reviews:
The "personality," not the musician.......2006-01-18
As an example of celebrity biography, this book is passible; it, at least, held my interest enough to allow me to finish it. Unfortunately, I had picked the volume up with the hopes of gaining some insight into Steve Earle as a musician and songwriter, not a mass of gossip about a person who happens to be a musician and songwriter.
St. John amply demonstrates the shortcomings of a journalist's approach to biographies: the facts are--these, as noted in other reviews here, not being well checked--presented sans interpretation or insight and there is nothing to be gained from this book that could not be gained by reading sundry articles by other journalists.
The author, again as noted in other reviews here, clearly is a fan and just as clearly does not seem to know much either about music per se or the specific traditions Steve Earle fits into and is in the process of transforming.
Don't throw the book away if someone gives it to you, but don't bother buying it, either.
Very good book about a remarkable man........2005-12-01
Steve Earle is a remarkable man who has led a remarkable life. He has pushed the boundaries of country music making more than half a dozen excellent albums, relentlessly chasing his muse at the expense of his relationships with his family, wives (married six times to five different women) and children, he has overcome a serious drug problem (so serious it nearly killed him), he has been to prison, he has been a political activist fighting against the death penalty.
Apart from the short prologue (which hints at the drug problems to come), the book is written in a strict chronological structure, chronicling his childhood in small town Texas, his song writing apprenticeship at the feet of Townes Van Zandt (a good teacher but a bad influence) and Guy Clark, the creation of his early groundbreaking albums against the background of his serious relationship with heroin and his many marriages, his descent into personal hell under the weight of his drug addiction and his time in prison before he emerges, clean, to re-launch his musical career making even better music, becoming more active in protests against the death penalty, finding love again and starting to try to resolve his relationships with his children.
The biggest problem author, Lauren St John, faced was how to do justice to such a complex character who has led such rich (and difficult) life in a little less than 400 pages. There is so much information to include that it sometimes makes it difficult to paint of picture of the man himself. Within the constraints of the genre, St John has done a very good job indeed. What emerges is an immensely driven and complex man who has led a tempestuous life - he is apparently hugely charismatic and charming but also clearly a difficult man to deal with and at times, self-destructive. This book does not view Earle through rose-tinted glasses it is often brutally honest about his failings and his behaviour (particularly during the darkest days of his drug addiction) - as such it sometimes makes unpleasant and depressing reading. However, in many ways it is a tale of redemption through creativity and as such is optimistic and uplifting. It also helps that Earle has a great talent for the memorable one-liner, some of which had me collapsing in laughter.
There is one caveat: the book is not finished. It finishes with the Guitar Town reunion tour before Jerusalem was released, so the controversy provoked by that album and in particular the John Walker's Blues is not covered. However, this is a minor caveat; this is still an excellent book and well worth reading (particularly if you are a fan of his music).
Tragedy & triumph........2005-09-06
Great read for a music bio. Tragedy & triumph. Ranks up there with Stevie Ray Vaughn's Bio by Potaski & crawford and other great music bios. Real lives, real drama.
An incredible artist to boot.
Highly recommend it.
A Survivor's Tale.......2005-01-28
I'm buying copies of this book for each of our kids - to show them one path through life they shouldn't even consider walking down. Steve Earle's life story isn't really all that new. Other artists, including numerous musicians have had difficulty with drug addiction following bouts with success in their craft. But Earle's story is nonetheless chilling and at times painful to absorb. The facts come crashing down like broken glass, leaving the reader to ponder just how Mr. Earle managed to survive THAT disaster.
I gave this book four stars and in terms of literary quality, that is a generous rating. I agree with reviewer Dale Miles's conclusion that a skilled editor could have helped significantly with the writing quality. To be more specific, I'd have enjoyed a more in-depth analysis of Earle's music and of the music that inspired him. I'd like to know more about his philosophical and political beliefs - simply put, I'm sure more flesh could have been put on the bones of this story.
Aside from those criticisms, I must admit that I'm hearing Steve Earle's music from a new perspective now. Back in real time, I'd heard of his addictions and of his battles with the music industry, but the numerous hard-luck stories revealed within Hardcore Troubador have a cumulative effect on the reader. Now, when I think about how I reacted to his weathered appearance at the Johnny Cash CMT tribute event, it all makes more sense. Earle's life episodes have certainly given him the blues and folk foundation from which he has drawn to create beautiful art, but I pity the man for what he's lived through in order to produce it.
Steve Earle?.......2004-09-26
Not really certain what to make of this...personally I was turned off on how much of the book was devoted to Steve Earle's drug use...but that is pretty much Steve Earle's life...so I'm not certain if the author is to be blamed for this or not...writing so much on the subject of drugs...I'm kind of wondering how Steve Earle was able to complete such a body of work...funny I never listen to his drug year cds...i thought they weren't intelligent enough...anyway if you want to know about Steve Earle this is really the only place to do this...no one else has put out a more definitive bio as of right now Sept 24th 2004...however it's a bit of a turn off with all the drug references...also I don't buy everyone loves him because he has a nice heart...although he did display that by offering compassion to ? Walker when everyone hated him he was the 1st to say he's a mixed up kid who made a mistake...it was pretty radical to say at the time but Steve Earle was right i think...so that is proof he does have a caring heart to a point...i would also say he does have artistic integrity on a very high level...of course no one would be here if they weren't interested in Steve Earle and most likely his music

Book Description
From Charlotte’s Web to Porky Pig and Arnold Ziffel, Americans are obsessed by pigs. In Hog Ties, Richard Horwitz looks at this obsession, its relation to American culture and the way in which themes of life and death are played out in the care, feeding, slaughtering and eating of pigs. Horwitz grew up in a rural, Jewish household in the Northeast and worked part-time as a farm hand on a large Iowa pig farm. As much a memoir of rural life as it is a work of cultural commentary, Hog Ties looks at the current business of pig farming, its roots in the family farms of the Midwest and its future in the large conglomerates that take over small farms and increasingly separate the farm families from their land. In the lives and trials of pigs and their caretakers, Horwitz sees a mirror image of our own lives, our fight against myriad diseases, our ultimate death, possible redemption and therein discovers the Tao of pig. Hog Ties is a book that readers will ponder long after the last page has been turned.
Customer Reviews:
An objective view of pigs, people, culture, and business........1998-11-10
I liked this book very much. Since I am an agriculturalist, I was somewhat skeptical going in, but I consider it a solid piece of work.
It is a very thoughtful look at American culture through the porthole of the relationship of people to pigs.
Many people have commented on the plight of "family farmers" as affected by "integrated" agriculture, but they either have a political agenda or little real understanding. In this case, tremendous effort is made by the author to understand the business of pigs and pork, and changes in society and the pig industry. This description of the swine industry is a studied, objective viewpoint, even if it is incidental to the real purpose of the book.
Mainly, the book is a unique study of human beings and relationships to each other and other species, including pathogens. The book contains thought-provoking observations on life, death, culture, agriculture, multiculture, and communication.
There's also some humorous, but basically true observations about academia and faculty challenges, all in the context of "sh__ happens."
To people very close to the industry, there may be a few observations of the business in error, slightly skewed interpretations of events, and (very few) errors in describing technology. However these are insignificant to the intent and lessons to be learned, and should be forgiven. Industry insiders should be tolerent when reading some portions of Hog Ties, but it is well worth the effort to see an objective "outsider's" point of view.
There may be portions of the book that seem tedious to readers not interested in the swine industry or swine disease, but if those readers stay with the author through such depths, interesting parallels are drawn.
Judging portions of the book out of the context of the whole work could lead to misinterpretation.
This would be interesting to anyone, but should be required reading for those in agriculture.
Book Description
A real-time look at what happens on television, giving a behind the scenes look at the news broadcasts that provide "information" to millions of Americans. You've been watching television news forever. You're intimately familiar with the friendly faces and soothing voices that nightly tell you what's wrong with the world. You think you know everything there is to know about them. You're wrong. If It Bleeds, It Leads shows you why. In an unprecedented real-time look at television news shows, If It Bleeds, It Leads takes you minute-by-minute through two-and-one-half riveting hours of syndicated, local, and network information programming to uncover the truth behind what passes as news. Why is the only real difference between Jerry Springer and Dan Rather that Dan's guests usually don't need medical attention? How did a load of baking powder spark two minutes of high-strung local news coverage? It's all here: the personal revelations of talk show guests; the dangers lurking in your neighborhood; sports; sex; celebrity; power; and weather updates every ten minutes--all real material taken from real broadcasts combined into 150 minutes of the most electrifying newscast you've ever seen.
"It's time to put down the remote control and pick up a book. Couch potatoes should read Matthew R. Kerbel's insider's look at TV news. It will make watching Tom Brokaw or Bob Hite more entertaining." -Tampa Tribune
"Kerbel doesn't mince words, doesn't provide special bedding for such sacred cows as Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw or Peter Jennings. He obviously believes that these beloved anchors are little better than trash like Jerry Springer. And he says so. This is a message that needs to be delivered over and over again, and I thank Kerbel for having the guts to be the messenger." -Dave Wood's Book Report
"A tour de force that unmasks the realities of television news and its enormous impact on politics. Writing in a lively, lucid style, Kerbel combines the best of real-world experience with depth and insight." -Susan J. Tolchin, Professor of Public Policy, George Mason University, and author of The Angry American
"[A] frank and cynical look at how television news and talk shows are produced and presented.... [A] cogent analysis of why and how the shows rely on brevity, simplicity, and shock value to entertain and inform." -Booklist
Customer Reviews:
Critics reconsider..........2002-06-30
I can't figure out what the critics hated about this book. Kerbel makes a fascinating connection between popular TV (talk shows) and the news and follows up with incisive, often hilarious line-by-line dissection of the formulaic venality of editorial decisions governing what we see on TV news. Perhaps it is Kerbel's implied message that we viewers, and our baffling craving to be scared and misled, are to blame for the grotesque caricature that news-at-5 and -11 has become. TV, and its interrelated fact and fiction programming, is nothing more than the sum of we the viewers' flawed values, and this is Kerbel's unsettling message behind the humor. Buy it.
don't bother!.......2001-02-17
The best thing about this book was it's title. The rest is not worth the bother. It was redundant and, basically, just sarcastic drivel.
Enough Already.......2000-08-29
The author makes an interesting point, that is, that there is hardly a shade of difference between the manner in which the talk shows and the news programs market their product, that they both manipulate their audiences, and that their subjects are presented for impact, rather than content.
However, he makes this point in the first 15 to 20 pages, and he then makes it again, and again, and again, and again. I never thought such a short book could become so redundant and so boring. Good idea, bad delivery.
It Leads to Brilliance.......2000-03-04
Matthew Kerbal gets it right every step of the way. By merely stating the obvious Kerbal makes us all aware of the dementia running through telelvision's need to please and worse, to fill too much air time. Staying out of the way, Kerbal brilliantly illuminates the uselessnes of TV News and with a great sense of humor he brings out the stranger-than-fiction aspects of American society. Bravo. A truly excellent read.
How true! If it bleeds it does lead........2000-02-09
The night before I read this hilarious book the lead story on my local news was a "this just in" double murder with on the spot reactions that could have come right out of the book. The thesis of the book is that TV news, both local and network, is dominated by formulae almost identical to those that govern talk shows like Springer. Kerbel substantiates his thesis via a running, and very funny, commentary on real news broadcasts from around the country. He also shows how the actual content of the news - the fearful, the bizarre, the outrageous and, of course, sex - stays the same while the putative actual subjects change from day to day. Is this depressing? Beats me, I just watch for the weather and sports(and he has some funny things to say about that too). If you want a good send up of the media this is for you.
