Book Description
Spatial deconcentration of economic activities, particularly the growth of suburban office, retail and entertainment concentrations, has become a prime concern in European metropolitan areas. This book provides a cross-national comparative perspective on employment deconcentration within selected metropolitan areas in Europe. Whereas most debate over urban sprawl and deconcentration is oriented towards the North American context, this book aims at a better understanding of this phenomenon in the European context, emphasizing the location of economic activities rather than residential patterns. It provides insights on whether different governance attributes produce particular forms of deconcentration versus the influence of market attributes and local specificities, also commenting on quality of life impacts and possible governance and policy implications of the deconcentration process.
Introduction of a comparative framework is followed by eight case study chapters, three representing northern Europe, three the south European-Mediterranean region and two post-communist central Europe. Most chapters examine two metropolitan areas, usually a large and a smaller one. The comparison reveals considerable variations in the magnitude, form, and process of employment deconcentration, only partly in line with expected influences of governance systems. Evidence does not fully confirm an anticipated distinction between Northern and Mediterranean Europe; the Czech Republic and Israel seem to diverge most from prevailing European trends.

Book Description
Part-time work has been the fastest growing of all forms of "non-standard" work. All member states of the European Union have given increasing attention to its regulation over the past quarter century. This book examines the influence of European Community rules and procedures on the development by member states of their policies towards part-time employment. It consists of an analysis of the relevant EU rules, a consideration of the national policies and the impact upon them of the EU provisions, as well as a suggested framework for the identification of these influences.

From the supplier: Reduced labor costs and revenue neutrality can help western European governments intervene in their respective labor markets without meeting opposition from workers who do not want pay cuts. The EC has advised its member nations to decrease their labor costs by 1% to 2% of their GDP. In this regard, payroll taxes offer the most important intervention tool. Revenue neutrality can be implemented by decreasing employer contributions and increasing employee contributions.

Book Description
In this compilation of articles edited by Ton Wilthagen en Ralf Rogowski the reflexive law theory is used within the field of labour law. According to this theory law may be regarded as a system of specialised communication. The adoption of such a perspective in the sphere of labour law may enable us to know and define the essence of labour law and the characteristics which distinguish it from other law areas. The various authors that have contributed to this book have made use of the reflexive law theory in describing recent trends and developments in the area of labour law in Western Europe and the United States. Collective bargaining, trade union law, labour courts, occupational safety and health are among the issues that are covered in this work by an international group of distinguished scholars in the field. Reflexive Labour Law is an interesting attempt to grasp the basic meaning, the core elements of labour law and acquire a better understanding of present and future developments changing labour law and industrial relations in Europe and elsewhere.

Book Description
Why, oh why, must Snowy sprawl across the newspaper while you're trying to read? This is just one of the secrets revealed when you read this book.
Amazon.com
Perhaps no other city in America has provided more grist for the music sociology mill than Memphis, Tennessee. While Memphis has been the muse for some truly classic books (Peter Guralnick's Sweet Soul Music, to name just one), the rhetoric surrounding "The Birthplace of Rock & Roll"--also "The Home of the Blues"--can be as daunting as a walk down the ravenously gentrified blues theme park that is Beale Street.
Enter Robert Gordon, a Memphis native and keen chronicler of the city's secret history. Gordon's It Came from Memphis all but ignores the Bluff City's oft-cited musical hierarchy--B.B. King, Elvis, Al Green et al.--in favor of its great unheralded eccentrics. You might not be familiar with the Insect Trust or Mudboy and the Neutrons, but Gordon argues--with empathy and wit--that you should be.
But music is only part of the story here. Whether it's Memphis's wrestling legend Sputnik Monroe, or the city's esoteric patron saint, artist-professor John McIntire, Gordon's shrewd eye sees the mojo in them all. In a way, Gordon's book is even more vital than the classic volumes on Memphis music that predate it. Where Guralnick interprets a musical tradition that is already firmly embedded in the American psyche, Gordon gives voice to a clandestine tradition that otherwise might go forgotten. --Matt Hanks
Book Description
Robert Gordon begins where most chroniclers of the music world end and spins a magical fairy tale peopled with Delta bluesmen, a peanut vendor, a matinee cowboy, a professional wrestler, and a manic deejay. It Came From Memphis doesn't focus on Elvis, Al Green, or the Sun/Stax studios. Instead it creeps into the shadows cast by those institutions, concentrating on artists like Jim Dickinson and Alex Chilton, and bands like the MarKeys and Big Star. Gordon limns, with respect and the fascination born of true devotion, the story of white teenagers caught in the middle of an extraordinary confluence of music, entrepreneurship, to usher in an exciting new musical form. The result is a rock 'n' roll and Memphis -- its alma mater.
Customer Reviews:
Rocking through Memphis.......2007-03-24
I enjoyed the first half of this book the most. Gordon's descriptions of the 1950s and 60s music scene in Memphis are really vivid, insightful, and a lot of fun. The quirky qualities of the area, such as the wild on-air patter of Dewey Phillips, the professional wrestling of Sputnik Monroe, the wack-o antics of Harry Fritzius (a deejay who appeared in public wearing a gorilla mask, hence the name "Harry"), and the stories about the Bitter Lemon Coffee Shop and Gallery are interesting, and often very funny, to read. For some reason, the description of the music scene from the late 70s to early 90s isn't quite as engaging. I don't think that's the fault of Gordon's fine writing. It's just a sense that recent history isn't quite the same, and I was left wondering if Memphis, or any American city, could ever develop such a vibrant, innovative, and eclectic music scene, even with the new variety of media and recording innovations of the digital age. Although Gordon maintains his enthusiasm for Memphis's music scene into the 1990s, there is a sense of well-grounded nostalgia for the early days of rockabilly and soul that forms an emotional core of this book. It feels like Gordon wants to move beyond this sense but that he can't quite reconcile his appreciation for the early days of rock-n-roll with his desire to keep up with the newest sound.
Deceptively racist .......2007-03-24
The chief problem that I have with this book is that on almost every page, Gordon provides an example of how some phenomenon of Memphis was responsible for breaking down the barriers of racism in America. Yet all such examples that he provides are of white people and nowhere does he bother to interview a black person or point out that in actuality, black people were instrumental and active in the fight for their own liberty. I stopped reading after page 70 so perhaps a black person does appear at some point. But should there really be an absence of anyone not white in a book claiming to celebrate racial harmony for 70 pages?
It's this brand of liberal racism that I find so objectionable in both this book and Peter Guralnik's Sweet Soul Music. In Guralnik's book, he makes the heroes of that piece - Don Penn and others - white and yet Soul was something quintessentially African-American. In Gordon's book, he goes one step further and completely removes the people from the culture altogether. Basically, this book is little more that a racist white fantasy of how racism was conquered by the pioneering actions of some brave white folks while black people stood passively by. Presenting events in such a way is morally wrong as well as historically inaccurate. It is part of a disturbingly large "liberal" culture that not only seeks to enjoy black culture while removing the people from it but also by denying black peoples' own active participation in their own destiny.
Long distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee.......2007-03-16
Essential read for anyone who beleives the whole punk/art/garage music concept was hatched in New York. All this, and not a speck of Elvis.
Coming from a Memphis family..........2007-03-09
My mom was born & raised in Memphis, she met my father & they married in Memphis, and I went to college & lived in Memphis, and reading this book years after I'd moved away picked me up and slammed me back in the middle of Memphis's midtown haunts. It's a tremendously fascinating read, one that I wish had been required my freshman year in college, because I can't imagine how I would have seen the city if I had this knowledge in my head then. I bought a copy for my dad especially because I saw his old 1960s rock & roll band mentioned in the text, and my parents really enjoyed reliving all of the memories that the book recalled.

Book Description
This monograph discloses how ideology in the domain of immigration is translated into educational policy and turned into school practices in Israel. The volume also provides bases for comparisons with other countries whose avowed goals are to educate for democracy and egalitarianism; contributes to the methodology of the policy sciences by demonstrating a complex model of process assessment; and clarifies the theorization of the process in which policy and practice are intertwined, and revert to ideology. The book will provide cues to prescription–indications of remedies for at least some of the recognized ills.
