India has committed to attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the year 2015. The MDGs are a set of numerical and time-bound targets related to key achievements in human development launched at the Millennium Summit 2000. In the developmental context, they constitute the most widely-accepted yardstick of efforts made and policies implemented by governments, donors, and non-governmental organizations. Attaining the MDGs is imperative and especially so for a developing country such as India. Significant among these goals are: BL Halving of the child underweight rate (from its level in 1990) BL Halving the proportion of people who suffer from hunger BL Two-thirds reduction in infant mortality rates BL Universal primary schooling BL Complete elimination of gender disparities in schooling opportunities How likely is India to reach these targets? And what will it take--by way of policy interventions--to attain the goals? This report critically analyzes India's performance across five selected MDGs. It uses a variety of data sources to analyze past progress in social indicators, paying particular attention to the heterogeneity of progress across India's many states and sub-units. It establishes correlations between the millennium development outcomes and various policy interventions, and proceeds to project the likely evolution of the millennium development indicators through 2015 based on particular policy scenarios. The report concludes by assessing the prospects of India as a whole--above all its poorer states--attaining the five MDGs by 2015. In doing so, the report highlights the type and scale of interventions that will be needed to attain these goals.

The book blunders.......2000-08-06

No refrences are properly cited and much is based on misinformation. The story about W.C. Fields is often quoted but instead of fact is actually based on a joke he told. There is no W.C. Fields missing money. It could have been better researched. But it makes for entertaining stories.

America's Greatest New Product Failures in the 20th Century.......2000-06-18

Since most new products fail, this list is over 80 percent product failures that were very expensive. The book is an object lesson in why companies should improve their new product development practices to stop spending when any new product looks iffy.

I was impressed that almost all of these cases were known to me. That made me feel better that I have been focusing on the right examples of stalled thinking in companies.

The book is well summarized. I only found one where the capsule history wasn't basically accurate. That was the case of Osborne and its bankruptcy after having introduced portable computing. The authors failed to mention that Osborne announced an advanced product that was delayed, which killed the sales of the existing product. In the absence of enough cash, the company was gone.

On the other hand, some of the cases will be hard for people to understand who don't know all the background. For example, the story of the unsuccessful New Coke doesn't have enough detail about why Coca-Cola made its monumental mistake.

The book could have been greatly improved if it had some sort of overview about what the lessons of these failures were. The absence of the overview is why I reduced the rating by one star.

I found the book to be a useful reminder of the many sources of stalled thinking that have harmed major companies. Most of us would benefit by reviewing these failures on a regular basis.

My favorite example was of W.C. Fields. In the days before ATMs, he hated to be in a city where he had no money. So he opened bank accounts in virtually any city he ever visited. To match his humorous perspective, he didn't use his real name on these accounts. He made up funny ones instead. The only problem was -- he couldn't remember which cities, which banks, and which names he used. When he died, an estimated $1.3 million was sitting unclaimed in accounts that he couldn't remember were his. You might call this the Ad Lib stall.

Being from Boston, I was not surprised to see that the sale of Babe Ruth by the Red Sox to the Yankees made the list.

Still, you'll have a good laugh! Also, I suggest you take a few minutes to write down what you think the lessons are from these examples are for your organization. That will make the book much more valuable for you.

the name sells but the results are tiring.......2000-03-21

I had planned to use this book as a reference book for a class I am teaching. However, the material in the book were less than adequate. I may go so far as saying that the articles were not even interesting nor educational in any form, shape or manner. A great dissapointment.

Hip Hop head ache...........2007-06-11

As an avid reader, fan of hip hop music, and frequent purchaser of photography books. I found Hip Hop Immortals the remix, to be both amazing and frustrating. Amazing in the fact that it was able to compile such a wide spectrum of Hip Hop's biggest legends. Frustrating, because the writing, and font's in this book make many of the passages unreadable. There are whole pages dedicated to what seems like just two paragraphs of writing, written in huge blocky fonts, that literally run into and all over each other. Who ever the graphic designer was on this book, should take a long vacation on the next one. The artist' bio's are lackluster at best, with no new insight, or creative spin placed on the writings. I found myself wanting to get in a time machine, track down the publisher, and force them to let me edit the book myself. While Hip Hop Immortals managed to achieve its goal in capturing the diverse essence of the culture from a musical stand point. The writings, graphic design lay out, and execution of the book as a whole. Would force me to suggest its purchase, if only you were getting it for a bargain.

I dont know how anyone can say much wrong about this. It realy is great all the pictures are like photos there realy that glossy,and each one has a quote on the back said by the charector on the postcard. Although I think that there should be some with just Buffy and the original slayerets. Also most of the photos were taken on the same day so they were in the same clothes. But all in all very good

It's an ok book for Buffy fans... but needed more Sarah pics.......1999-07-13

This book was pretty cool, if you're a die-hard BtVS fan, or if you just starting watching the show. But if you're in it for SMG pics or rare Buffy shots, you'll be really dissapointed, there aren't enough in there of Sarah, and especially not of her alone. Anyway, you can get most of the photos anywhere else. Anybody could manage to easily get these common pics off the internet from any Sarah or Buffy site for free. So the book isnt really worth getting excited over.

More a book for consultants as looks at functions across differnet platforms. Bur clear coding examples. Would re-purchase for the right price.

for the most part it does deliver.......2005-08-24

Like with every Wrox book there are many voices in the book. Unfortunately they do not comprise a choir...You will find a useful info scattered throughout the book; do not try to get a coherent picture out of it. I liked the idea of the book, and for the most part it does deliver.
There were small annoyances here and there:
For example, I find it strange that authors thought it necessary to give their version of pronunciation ":(otherwise known as SQL and pronounced "SEE-kwul") " for what is clearly not a beginner book; and I pronounce it "ess-que-ell" as many of my colleagues do)

Same goes for the first few chapters where authors have chosen to show examples of a basic queries, connect to database syntax etc. UNIX shell function example (p.14) was rather a dubious choice - why not C? VB? Java? Perl? Most database application developers are not familiar with the shell scripts, and could not care less.

It really would help me if the book covered creation of the user defined functions with Java and .NET (available in Oracle, DB2 UDB, PostgreSQL (Java), MSSQL Server, IBM DB2 UDB (.Net/C#); the book only covers Sybase where function created in Java 1.1... Reporting issues (chapter 19) seem torn out of some other book, and badly fitted into SQL Functions...The subject of Regular Expressions was hardly paid any attention, save for the fact that such thing does exist; MSSQL Server, for instance, provides access to OLE interface of its scripting engine Regex implementation. On the other hand, I was delighted to see PostgreSQL included.
