    Book Description

The Buyer's Guide to Business Insurance is full of step-by-step guidance, ideas, and tips on how to improve your business insurance costs, coverage, and service from both insurance agencies and companies. The authors bring more than 38 years of industry experience to this helpful, non-technical reference guide -- showing you how to get the best property and casualty insurance coverage at the lowest prices.

One of the simplest ways business owners can save money is by re-examining their policy assumptions - an immediate refund may be yours for the asking. Most business insurance policies and rates are based on payrolls, inventories, or sales volumes. Too often, premiums on current policies are based on high values from pre-recession days. Your premium payments can be reduced simply by furnishing your agent or broker with the current real numbers. The Buyer's Guide to Business Insurance will:
    * Help you save money and time when purchasing business insurance
    * Simplify insurance purchasing with clear directions in an easy-to-use format
    * Empower you with inside information about insurance people and industry methods
    * Demystify the insurance process
    * Eliminate confusion and complexity
    * Help you avoid poor service
    You will learn:
    * What to look for in a policy;
    * What questions to ask the broker; and
    * How to compare alternative quotes.
Checklists, comparison charts, prepared letters, and forms make this book especially easy to use. If you want to save time and money through a streamlined process, and gain an unbiased viewpoint of your business insurance situation, read The Buyer's Guide to Business Insurance.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive reference guide for business insurance.......2006-09-08

After reading this book, all I can say is that it should be required reading for every company controller, accountant, and office manager in the country. It unravels the mysteries behind how business insurance works, how brokers and insurance companies exploit people's lack of knowledge of the system for their own gain, and gives you specific tools, techniques and instructions for taking steps to create massive reductions in your insurance bill. This is definitely the book that the insurance industry does not want us to see, and I'm definitely putting the wisdom I've gained from reading it to good practice in my own business.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and well thought out........1998-08-26

Any business can learn from the no nonsense approach to how you should handle your business insurance. The book is easy to read, and answers questions about buying business insurance that you cannot get anywhere else.

Insurance is confusing and this book takes the mystery out of insurance buying. Being afraid to switch insurance brokers could cost you a lot of money and this book tells you how to get more out of your own broker or how to tell if it is time to switch.

I reconmmend this book to any business that has to purchase insurance.

Your Money - A Consumer Digest Inc. Publication April/May 2000 Issue

              Who Really Needs Life Insurance?

"It's a very emotional issue and a very subjective one," says William Brownlie, a retired chartered life-insurance underwriter who now advises consumers and author of Life Insurance Boot Camp Buyer's Guide.

5 out of 5 stars For all stages of one's life..........1999-09-10

Life Insurance Boot Camp is basic training for the life insurance industry. Aimed at consumers of life insurance, this 330 page paperback (also in a diskette Word 97 version) will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about life insurance, and then some. From what to look for in a company or agent to the calculations for the internal rate of return of a whole life policy, this manual covers all.

William Brownlie is a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and a career life insurance agent now retired from actively selling life insurance. He holds the CLU, ChFC, CIP, LIA designations. His other works include "Life Insurance: Its Rate of Return", and "The Life Insurance Buyer's Guide". He is also a former member of the Million Dollar Round Table, a group of life insurance sales achievers.

The book is divided into nine parts: Life Insurance Basics, Life Insurance Considerations, Term, Non-Term, Riders, Who Should Pay the Premium, Ledger Statements, Claim Procedure, and a Life Insurance IQ Test.

The material in the book is suitable for beginners to life insurance experts, although the internal rate of return discussion do get a bit complicated. The author is obviously an expert in this area.

Each chapter ends with the author's subjective opinion on the topic at hand, and leaves the reader with the impression of being gently guided along the education process.

If you could purchase one book on the topic of life insurance, this one should be near the top of your list.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer for the forgotten life insurance market.......1999-01-21

An excellent primer for the middle income market long forgotten by the life insurance industry - because they have taken Plato's advice by developing "philosopher kings" as agents to serve those earning high six figure incomes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent life insurance primer.......1998-12-27

This guidebook excels in describing the "return" of a whole life policy. The author is an expert in evaluating the internal rates of return (what buyers are getting for their money measured in terms of compound interest) for term and non-term life insurance.

                  Book Description

This book examines the interrelationship between the external debt problem and the consolidation of democracy in Latin America in the 1990s. It considers the interplay of actors, including creditor governments, international financial institutions, debtor countries, commercial banks, and multinational corporations, and environment in the new decade, focusing on whether or not Latin America's political regimes can strengthen and democratize their respective economies while continuing to guarantee the country's democratic politics. The foreign debt problem casts an especially long shadow on the Latin American democracies. While important in its own right, understanding the Latin American experience is also essential in light of changes in Eastern Europe. Despite many obvious cultural differences and historical experiences, there are many parellels between the two regions--democratization at a time of economic crisis and of heavy external debt. This important new book underscores the lessons of the Latin American experience, making it essential reading for anyone concerned with the global economy.

                  1 out of 5 stars Trotskyite Dogma.......2005-05-31

Don't expect a reasoned, or scholarly, study of Walter Reuther. This is just a political screed from the Socialist Workers Party.

5 out of 5 stars Living lessons of working-class struggle.......2003-04-23

This is a lively and very useful pamphlet taking up important questions of political perspective and strategy facing workers everywhere. Bea Hansen was a young auto worker, a union activist and a socialist in the 1950s. Her talk printed here focuses on the evolution of Walter Reuther, then present of the United Auto Workers, tracing his development from a militant-minded young student and worker into a career-minded, union bureaucrat looking to collaborate with the employers and their government in maintaining the status quo.

Hansen gives a lively introduction to the massive struggles of millions of workers that forged the industrial unions in the United States in the 1930s and 1940s, and a sharp contrast of Reutherýs political course with that of the great revolutionary working class leader Eugene V. Debs. This is an important story that is often hidden or falsified, and full of lessons for todayýs labor movement. This pamphlet also prints an article by Farrell Dobbs, a leader of the union battles in the Mid-Western United States in the 1930s, comparing Reutherýs views with those of another top union bureaucrat, George Meany.

On the same topic, Iýd also recommend reading Laborýs Giant Step: The first 20 years of the CIO, by Art Preis, Trade Unions in the Epoch of Imperialist Decay, by Leon Trotsky, and the Changing Face of U.S. Politics: Working class politics and the trade unions, by Jack Barnes.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Working-Class Fighter Exposes a Bureaucrat.......2003-03-17

Do you want to know what the labor bureaucracy is all about? Read this little book on Walter Reuther, the longtime head of the UAW and spiritual father of today's labor misleaders. Bea Hansen tells the story of how Reuther, who once described himself as a socialist, traded his principles to mount the ladder of the bureaucracy to its top rung.

Hansen contrasts Reuther with another kind of labor leader, Eugene V. Debs, who fought for his socialist principles, tried to build a movement against the U.S. war machine, and supported the rank-and-file struggles of labor. Hansen is an authoritative voice on these issues. Members of her family led the Flint Sit-Down strike when she was a girl and she was a respected socialist fighter in the auto workers union for most of her life. This remarkable pamphlet ends with Hansen's confident prediction-in 1955 at the height of the witch hunt--that young people will pick up the struggle for socialism that Reuther abandoned.

5 out of 5 stars the words of the kind of general we need to fight us free.......2003-03-01

Bea Hansen who wrote this had slaved in GM and I believe ford. Her sister Genora had been one of the heroic leaders in the Flint sit downs. She did not write about Reuther as someone in a book, a newspaper, a liberal or limp water pseduo socialist or any kind of hero, but a sellout, a particular kind of sellout, someone of her generation, someone who started out like her as a worker wanting to fight, who had strayed and been deformed by Stalinist, social democratic., Democratic party, big business humping, selloutism into what he became.

To anyone who knew Bea, her tremendous intelligence, her dead serious organization skills, her smarts with people, her cold blooded decisiveness, you knew her choices, even as a woman in those times, opportunites to sell out and go places, to make some sort of place in bourgois society even without betrayal had been just as open outside the revolutionary workers movement or more so for her than someone like Reuther. Yet she chose the workers movement, the revolutionary communist movement, without restraint as heartily and strongly as she did everything else! She had signed up for the duration and fought every battle to the death! She received a bigger prize than Reuther ever did!

Bea was 10 times smarter than something like Reuther, tied to her class, not by sentiment, but by conviction of who you really need in a fight. She was not some nostalgia monger harping back to the "good old days" when even Reuther was militant, but a fighter who kept on fighting against world War 2, against the cold war, against Reuther, fought even when her sister sold up and gave up, she fought on until she could fight with people like Malcolm X and Che Guevara. Bea stayed to welcome militants like me who came from the antiwar movement and others who came from the women's liberation movement. Bea Hansen was a fighter, a leader and trainer and organizer of fighters.

I remember her warm, hearty, working class like someone from home (the part of my family that included steelworkers, coalminers, and yes moonshiners) , but smart and schooled in struggle and science like the field generals we need to win our freedom. Read this and learn our history and our future. Read this and realize that fighting workers, fighting women, fighting immigrants will produce a thousand Bea Hansens for every lickspittle Reuther the capitalists can buy out!

                    Book Description

ãThe relationship of sexuality and humor is a recurrent theme in the collections at The Kinsey Institute. . . . The holdings contain vast numbers of silly greeting cards, naughty objects, cartoons, jokes, and toys. It is clear that much of the collection is humorous in some way, and that these pieces are likely to be some of the most memorable and engaging.ä ÷from the Foreword by Betsy Stirratt

From an "interview" with "Dr. Frieda Tingle, the world's leading expert on sex" to essays on "Humor in the Eight-Pagers" and "Gershon Legman, Lord of the Lewd," this collection of words and images showcases the various aspects of humor and sexuality. A special exhibition of "Sex and Humor" has been put together by The Kinsey Institute from its vast collection of silly greeting cards, naughty objects, cartoons, artwork, jokes, and toys. The goal is that the essays, the book as a whole, and the exhibition will serve as catalysts for further discussion about the nature of humor and its relationship to human sexual behavior and expression.

                      Book Description

Nature of Music is both a primer on how, when, and why to listen to music, and an exploration of how music mirrors the natural impulses of our minds, psyches, bodies, and souls-our physical and emotional rhythms. Maureen McCarthy Draper, a classical pianist, writes about the ways in which the great works of the classical canon can help us cope with grief, give dimension to the mysteries of beauty and faith, aid us in recovery from illness, inspire us to create, help us know ourselves better, or just give us a boost of energy.

Draper has also amassed an invaluable musical bibliography of more than 170 works to help us integrate music into everyday life. From it we can create our own listening list for work, play, sex, or meditation. Using music as both a metaphor and a medium, Draper illuminates the living, breathing dimensions of the masterpieces that have endured for centuries, and celebrates the countless gifts that music has to offer when we listen with imagination and engaged hearts.

"The Nature of Music opens the heart and the ears to new ways of listening, weaving the wisdom of the musical past with the potential of the future. A book truly to be listened to."-Don Campbell, author of The Mozart Effect

5 out of 5 stars Love and Inspiration in Music.......2001-10-17

This book is full of love of music and inspiration for musicians of all ages and levels. For the historian, there are many lesser known, interesting facts. For the music student, there are words of wisdom about keeping the inspiration and love in daily practice. For the music lover just beginning to build a listening library, there are wonderful suggestions for starting a CD collection (not limited to classical music). This is a book to be read slowly, to be savored and contemplated. This book invites the reader to experience music in a very sensual way, not with ears alone, but with one's whole body, mind and spirit. It is an exploration of the possibilities of music as a mood setter, a mood enhancer, or a mood anti-dote. It is about music as a healer of physical and emotional disharmonies. It is an exploration of what is universal in music and what is highly individual.
There is something for everyone in this book. I highly recommend it as a gift to anyone interested in music.

                      5 out of 5 stars user-friendly and sophisticated.......2001-09-28

If you know nothing or everything about music, read this book to open up a whole new world. Draper's simple, elegant writing and natural approach to her subject will inspire readers to pay attention and listen to music with a fresh approach. This is a great gift for yourself, your children, your parents, your new amour. Listening to the cds and reading the accompanying text with friends is a wonderful reason to have a series of dinner parties.
Thanks, M. Draper, for bring music back into my life through another door I didn't even know was there.

5 out of 5 stars The Nature of Music: Beauty, Sound, and Healing.......2001-07-25

Maureen McCarthy Draper's book is an invitation to return to the joy of listening to music in a way to set moods, to mark days of the week or to simply relax and be transported by musical experiences. This invitation includes examples via the carefully selected selections of music on the accompanying CD's which depict each of the examples of how music can soothe the soul within, or elevate the awareness of beauty in a way that no other medium can. This book reminds those of us that love music of its importance, but invites us to consider it at another level of perception and gives us the suggested methods to add to our perception.

It also makes a lovely gift to anyone who loves, and loves to share the joy of music....

5 out of 5 stars A Jewel from One Heart to Another.......2001-07-20

Maureen Draper`s book is a jewel! In today`s time of high technology and speed, she slowed me down, called the voice of my heart and reminded me to listen to my body and to my soul. She did it all with classical music - speaking of it with great simplicity, and although i am a professional classical musician, i felt like i was entering an unknown field and wanted to know EVERYTHING about it! On the two cd`s that she recommends buying together with the book, she has chosen less known pieces, which allowed me to discover my own feelings and sense of the music, undisturbed by the familiarity of more famous pieces. She guided me through the many different landscapes of music and patiently showed me, with great knowledge and passion and tenderness, all their beauty, encouraging me, at last, to be alone in them, to observe and to fully sink in the emotions they elicited in me.

This book is an unusual, unique look into the depths of music and it makes a wonderful gift. Thank you, Maureen!

5 out of 5 stars An Antidote to Our Culture........2001-07-12

There are several things that stand out upon even a preliminary acquaintance with the book. The tasteful presentation of the book, the Klimt on the cover, the quality of the paper the book is printed on all exhibit careful attention to fine detail. But there is an additional quality, which I found particularly appealing.

The author unabashedly centers her attention on eternal values, such as beauty and higher aspirations of the soul. These Òold-fashionedÓ values which the author takes as given and forever relevant, our societyÑat least that part of it which expresses itself most loudlyÑdeems irrelevant and out of fashion. The bookÕs tone, with its unhurried soft-spoken concern for beauty and lofty values, strikes me as bold and courageous. For our time is interested in flashy, quick, loud and digital (that is, small and fractured and flat and two-dimensional). The society is much less interested in the quiet, the subtle and the deep, which this book espouses. The book is set against the background of the fin de siecle, only this time it is OUR own 20th centuryÕs fin de siecle! The message, whether conscious and unconscious, that the book delivers, becomes a counterpoint and an antidote to our culture.

                        Book Description

The United States has run out of heroes. "Hero" refers to a national hero, a Universal American around whom we all would rally if called. The hero is the man--rarely the woman--who inspires children and adults, and reflects the finest qualities of the American people. He is recognized as an inspiration, seen as someone engendering our best qualities. It is not that the hero represents most if not all Americans; it is that most if not all Americans are happy to have him as their representative. This is the man, the role, gone from our lives, permanently. Edelstein gives a vivid description of heroes of America's past, and offers an explanation of the national appeal of such men as Billy the Kid, Babe Ruth, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Jr. He describes how many of the fields from which Americans once drew their heroes have disappeared, and how the structures of other fields that were once sources of heroes have been altered, thereby obstructing the creation of new heroes. Not that heroism is dead. To the contrary, many Americans are often found performing heroic acts: police officers and fire fighters, federal agents and everyday people are regularly commended for committing acts above and beyond the call of duty. But these heroic actions are usually noted only on a local level. To be an American hero is to be a national hero. This is accomplished by an act of an individual that demands and receives national attention. But that doesn't seem to happen anymore. It is difficult to recall the last ticker-tape parade for an individual American hero. Parades now celebrate groups: freed hostages, winning sports teams, returning service personnel. The book concludes with a discussion on the ramifications of the disappearance of the American hero.

                              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great deployment book.......2004-06-23

This book is a very good HOWTO book on deploying a secure wireless network.

This book starts out with a description of the technologies used, like one of the previous reviewers has posted, it doesn't compare in contrast the two Windows authentication techniques available, but does a descent job describing the technology. You will also note that Microsoft Press didn't intend this book to be used for Evaluation or Skill Building which such comparison might be considered.

Moving on to part II, it starts with a guide on best practices for the deployment of wireless access points, it then moves onto it's deployment guides.

This is where this book sets itself apart from other HOWTO books that assume that you are deploying it in an large enterprise, or assume that you are going to deploy in a small office, this book gives you more choices.

First two deployment scenarios are for large enterprise, including a case study on the Microsoft roll out of Wi-Fi, they also give you a simple small office deployment scenario with no servers. Finally at the very end of the book, there is a lab deployment scenario (ie an enterprise type deployment with the fewest servers possible).

Also including are techniques to securing offer public, or semi-public wireless internet access on the same wireless network, without allowing them access to your network resources (other than the internet line and associated services).

This book rounds up part III with chapters on trouble shooting wireless clients, access point and the server parts of your wireless network.

Overall I recommend this book to anyone that needs to do an actual deployment of a wireless network, with Windows, or would like to learn the fundamentals of deploying a secure wireless network with a Windows infrastructure. I will be using this book as I deploy my companies wireless network in the coming months.

If this book went in depth on comparing the authentication and encryption techniques I would have given it 5 stars since it would be the perfect book on deploying secure wireless network with Windows.

2 out of 5 stars weak wireless book.......2004-03-02

This is first Microsoft Press book that I can't recommend to anyone. The author is probably well versed in the technology but his ability to fully explain to the average reader is lacking. Chapter 2 should have expanded to explain the strength and weakness of each of the Authentication, Encryption, and Data Integrity processes. If you don't understand the security issues that each of these processes deals with you will be lost very quickly. Each Microsoft operating has different levels of support and setting for setting up a wireless client configuration - the book blows past this. I have found more information on the Cisco site.

5 out of 5 stars excellent info for what I needed - help on 71-298.......2003-09-29

I was studying for the 71-298, design Security for Server 2003 and needed Microsoft fast info, so gave me all info as well as a good lab to set up for a wireless lab. Great book! We be setting up the lab at home next year to get experience in the new technology.

                              Needed wirless, security info.
