                  Book Description

This work provides a unified and simple treatment of dynamic economics using dynamic optimization as the main theme, and the method of Lagrange multipliers to solve dynamic economic problems. The author presents the optimization framework for dynamic economics in order that readers can understand the approach and use it as they see fit. Instead of using dynamic programming, the author chooses instead to use the method of Lagrange multipliers in the analysis of dynamic optimization because it is easier and more efficient than dynamic programming, and allows readers to understand the substance of dynamic economics better. The author treats a number of topics in economics, including economic growth, macroeconomics, microeconomics, finance and dynamic games. The book also teaches by examples, using concepts to solve simple problems; it then moves to general propositions.

4 out of 5 stars An alternative to Lucas, Sargent and recursive methods.......2004-01-18

Most grad students are taught to solve dynamic equilbrium problems using recursive methods. Two of the prominent books that I am familiar with are:
                  * Thomas Sargent's Dynamic Macroeconomics
                  * Lucas and Stokey's Recursive Methods in Economic Dynamics

(Note: I see that Sargent has another volume out, Recursive Macroeconomic Theory, with Lars Ljungqvist.)

Chow's book presents a Lagrangian method for dynamic optimization. This is a far easier approach than recursive methods, as anyone who is familiar with simple calculus will attest. Chow presents the method then --and this is the real value of this book-- systematically applies it to familiar market equilibrium, financial, business cycle, game theory, and growth models (all dynamic, of course).

                  BENEFITS:
                  * Chow's Lagrangian method removes mathematical obstacles to understanding important macroeconomic models
                  * Chow is a good writer, and this book is far easier to understand than the two books listed above
                  * This is a great reference for grad students looking for foundations for your own research

Our right to a sane, sensible society is being stolen from us, right under our own noses. Can you smell it? According to Xavier Crement, M.D., it is the Asshole Conspiracy, and he exposes it in this, his third book in the Asshole Saga. This book is nothing less than a new explanation of social evolution to replace Darwin, Freud, and Marx. It sheds new light on human history and has inspired Dr. Crement to call for a worldwide revolution-- a social enema to purge assholes and assholism forever!

This book deals less with the "how to" of Huna and more with finding/proving that Huna is the basis of Christian religion. I still recommend this book for people studying Huna and looking for a way to create more effective prayer.

3 out of 5 stars I never expected to rip one of Max Freedom Long's books. ;-(.......2001-01-20

I see that MR. Long fell into the same trap that Scott Cunningham and many others fall into when they allow their previous faith to color their view when writing about another faith.

I Greatly respect the works of Max Freedom Long, but here is one instance where he is wrong. He saw tenets in Huna closely meshed with the tenets in "christianity" the faith he was exposed to earlier in life, and assumed that "christianity" adopted the tenets of Huna.

Virtualy all faiths have similar tenets. I have explored virtualy all faiths from Buddhism to Witta, and they all have similar tenets, but this does not mean that one faith is an offshoot of another faith or they were incorporated after encountering another faith.

I think I have read all of Max's writings except for "What Jesus Taught In Secret". and I can tell you that Mr. Long did an admirable job of preventing Huna from disappearing forever. However; Mr. Long has presented an INCOMPLETE picture of HUNA. Nowhere in Max's writings have I seen him discuss the Huna deities like Hina, Kane, Ku, Pele, etc, Nor have I seen him discuss the kapu (religion taboos).

I am a devout pagan (American Indian Spirituality), but I continue to seek for answers.

Please E-mail me if you have questions or comments about my review. Two Bears.

Max Freedom Long ... what a powerful name! And from him comes this powerfully liberating, new (relatively speaking) writing ... which for some of us, will present new possible meanings for other, older writings ... Bible, Eastern, etc., using the "Huna Code" ... deeper meanings of Polynesian root words and symbolism from ancient Egypt.

The Huna Code in Religions is a fascinating read which takes you from the Egypt of over 2,000 years ago to modern times in Polynesia. Along the way it points out the common higher truths found in the worlds major religions while providing us with compelling evidence which suggests that ancient initiates of the "Huna system" may have been a major spiritual influence for them all.

On a personal level, the information in this book provided me the opportunity to understand why, in the past, I always felt like I didn't "fit in" ... why I knew things didn't have to be the way they were, the way others said they had to be ... I was able to become clear about life as a "human being".

To "understand" is a choice ... with clarity being the natural outcome of the choice to "understand". The Huna Code in Religions provides us the opportunity to make that choice. As Shakespeare said "To be or not to be, that is the question".

When the saying "Know thyself" resonates with you, more than likely, so will this book.

Then, for a more in-depth understanding of the Bible ... specifically the ministry of Jesus ... please treat yourself to one of Max Freedom Long's other books "What Jesus taught in Secret".

5 out of 5 stars Finally the confussion in religion may be clarified.......1999-09-08

Most religious teachings seem to say one thing and mean yet another. After 30 years of research Max Freedom Long discovered ties between the ancient Hawaian Religion and the even older lost religions from which all others seem to have evolved. Utilizing linguistics, comparitive analysis and good old common sense, Long discovered that most major religions have multilevels of teachings, outer teachings for the masses and the inner teachings for the initiated. Start your own search for the secrets or your religion with this book. Huna (Secret) Code In Religions will open a new level of religious teachings and just may answer those nagging questions and connect the loose ends most of us have with religion.

                                      Book Description

That market forces drive the news is not news. Whether a story appears in print, on television, or on the Internet depends on who is interested, its value to advertisers, the costs of assembling the details, and competitors' products. But in All the News That's Fit to Sell, economist James Hamilton shows just how this happens. Furthermore, many complaints about journalism--media bias, soft news, and pundits as celebrities--arise from the impact of this economic logic on news judgments.

This is the first book to develop an economic theory of news, analyze evidence across a wide range of media markets on how incentives affect news content, and offer policy conclusions. Media bias, for instance, was long a staple of the news. Hamilton's analysis of newspapers from 1870 to 1900 reveals how nonpartisan reporting became the norm. A hundred years later, some partisan elements reemerged as, for example, evening news broadcasts tried to retain young female viewers with stories aimed at their (Democratic) political interests. Examination of story selection on the network evening news programs from 1969 to 1998 shows how cable competition, deregulation, and ownership changes encouraged a shift from hard news about politics toward more soft news about entertainers.

Hamilton concludes by calling for lower costs of access to government information, a greater role for nonprofits in funding journalism, the development of norms that stress hard news reporting, and the defining of digital and Internet property rights to encourage the flow of news. Ultimately, this book shows that by more fully understanding the economics behind the news, we will be better positioned to ensure that the news serves the public good.

5 out of 5 stars An economist's view of news and its (dis)contents.......2006-04-29

Having last studied economics as an undergraduate many years ago, I was partially prepared to understand the perspective from which Prof. Hamilton analyzes news, its content, and the market forces dictating that content and its distribution in "All the News That's Fit to Sell". As a citizen concerned with the body politic and its seeming habit of voting against its own long-term economic interests, I was more than curious to understand how, in an age when access to information is almost limitless, people continue to subscribe to political falsehoods and half-truths propagated by our elected officials.

Hamilton throws us into the deep end of economic theory right away by observing that "news is a commodity... a product shaped by forces of supply and demand," and thus amenable to market theory to "predict the content of news and evaluate its impact on society." In this way, he wants to show "how consumers' desires drive news coverage and how this conflicts with ideals of what the news ought to be."

First, Hamilton places news within the larger category of information goods--goods characterized by being public and experience goods, by product dimension differentiation, and by high fixed costs/low variable costs. These characteristics help explain how market forces determine what becomes news. At the consumer end, Hamilton borrows from Anthony Downs to identify four information demands, i.e. reasons people desire information: consumption, production, entertainment, and voting. For the first three demands, consumption of the news realizes its benefit. For voting, however, the economic cost of investing the time and effort to inform oneself on each of the candidates and their positions does not justify the probability that that individual's vote will change the final election outcome, leading to Downs's conclusion "that voters do not demand information on policy details and choose to remain 'rationally ignorant'."

Although recent percentage voter turnout and the public's relative lack of political awareness seemingly bears out Downs's dismal analysis, enough Americans demand political information such that the market provides outlets for "hard news". In Hamilton's formulation, "hard news" contains high levels of public affairs information while "soft news" contains very little or none.

This sets up the main thrust of the book: how we can use economics to model media content and predict market failures, i.e. those types of news coverage likely to be underproduced, and what are the ultimate costs of these failures. This assumes, of course, that one can place a standard of value on outcomes of news coverage and consumption. This element of subjectivity "means that economics yields partial, not final, answers in questions about news coverage." But, "If one is willing to make assumptions about media effects and stipulate particular ends for media policy,... then economics can provide more help in the design of policies chosen to achieve a given set of outcomes." In so many words, Hamilton seems to be using economics to find ways to increase both the production and consumption of unbiased hard news. After exhaustive analyses of news demographics and content, their effects on voting outcomes, and of how market forces, along with deregulation and centralization, have slowly turned hard news into empty partisan posturing and entertainment fluff, Hamilton offers some solutions, including lowering the cost of access to information, change the conditions under which broadcasters receive broadcasting licenses, subsidize information markets, devote public resources towards providing information, create norms that reward hard news reporting, and stimulate demand for information through education and advertising.

"All the News That's Fit to Sell" offers the hopeful message that greater access to unbiased information will lead to better political outcomes. With the increasing political participation of religious dogmatists and other rigid ideologues who have already found their versions of the truth, the need for greater public participation and interest in public policy has never been greater, and Hamilton's book provides a framework for understanding and realizing that goal.

The "Read less-Learn More" Visual series from Wiley Publishing suits this reviewer just fine. These books, usually priced under $20, are chock full of great information presented in two-page spreads featuring full-color screen shots. Google: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks is the latest in the "Read Less-Learn More Visual" line and it is a keeper. The concise, step-by-step tips and tricks, are on side columns and connect to the screen shots with arrows. It is very easy to follow. Each tip features a meter showing the difficulty level. Almost all the tips introduce a new skills or task or combines multiple skills requiring in-depth knowledge; 2 and 3 respectively on a 4-point scale. At the bottom right of each spread are tips and trivia such as: "Try This", "Did You Know?", and "More Options!". The author, Joe Kraynak, writes in an easy-to-read style and he often provides examples which you can follow through the screen shots and accompanying tips. The screen shots are from Microsoft Internet Explorer's browser and only the toolbar differs from those of other browsers (I use Mozilla) but don't let that bother you.

Google: Top 100 Simplified Tips & Tricks is organized into ten chapters each of which contains ten tips or tricks (Kraynak keeps it simple). The chapters are: 1) Maximize Google Search Options; 2) Search for Images, Video Clips, and Other File Types; 3) Tap the Power of Google's Reference Tools; 4) Enhance Your Browser with Google Tools; 5) Get Your News Through Google News; 6) Explore the Local Scene with Google; 7) Save Money with Google's Froogle; 8) Read and Post Messages in Discussion Forums; 9) Create and Maintain Your Blog; 10) Explore the Power of Google Labs Tools. One chapter that I found intriguing was on creating one's own Blog. I had no idea that creating a blog was relatively easy and there are helpful tips on how to keep it current and attract readers.
