                      Book Description

The authors provide the first systematic analysis of government budgeting and the politics of the budgetary process. They examine debates and reforms in public finance from Whitlam and Fraser to Hawke, Keating and Howard, and assess their impacts on policy development.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Reform is a continuous process.......2002-10-25

An excellent book that varies between a chronologised history of budget reform in Australia, and an investigation of contemporary budgeting and budget theory. Interesting reading even if you are not familiar with Australia, but are interested in Government budgeting, or interested in a country with an excellent history of aggregate budget outcomes over the past twenty years.

Though it meanders a bit, it is a good read. The main author is a respected contributor to the field. The book also provides a good political history as major issues and actors of the time period covered are viewed through the prism of public expenditure management, including elections.

Cemeteries are, sadly, an oft-overlooked tourist destination, especially by fans of music. History buffs will go on battlefield pilgrimages, celebrity hounds will flock to where their favorite stars were interred, and art lovers go for Elizabethan monument rubbings, but few have known where to go to pay their respects to the likes of Alton "Rockin' Dopsie" Rubin, Roy Kelton Orbison, and Eddie "Guitar Slim" Jones. At least till now. Scott Stanton did the world of music enthusiasts a major favor by researching the final resting places of over 200 of the 20th century's late musical greats, from Howlin' Wolf to Benny Goodman to Janis Joplin. From France's Gothic Pere Lachaise Cemetery (where the remains of Chopin and Jim Morrison lie) to Hollywood's Forest Lawn (home to the bones of Karen Carpenter, Andy Gibb, and Liberace), Stanton covers 6 countries, 44 states, and over a million miles for his gravesite review.

Profiled alphabetically, the life, music, death, shrines, archives, and burial site of each musician is interesting and insightful, and the black-and-white photographs are a nice touch. And for the fan who wants more than to merely view the grave of the deceased, Stanton includes tips for album and memorabilia collectors. There's also a chapter on musicians who've passed on but whose remains cannot be visited (most being scattered to the high seas or some such thing) and also a cemetery index for those devotees who want to plan their vacation around some sacred ground. --Stephanie Gold

                              5 out of 5 stars Quick Reference.......2007-01-09

The older I get I ask myself, "is this person still living?" This book provides a quick reference. An as I become aware of deaths or major events in a musicians live I write it in the back pages. Morbid, but a part of life and musical history.

                              5 out of 5 stars Endlessly Absorbing.......2005-12-07

This is a great coffee table book to have around when you have idle moments - the entries are all about a page long and it is quite fascinating. Each entry has a capsule history of the musician describing their rise to fame, how they died, and detailed info to find the location of the grave. Most entries have a photo of the person and/or the gravesite. There's quite a variety of musicians included, from Buddy Holly to Elvis to Lawrence Welk and Roy Orbison. Some graves seem quite obscure, in stark contrast to the life led by the occupant.

It's sobering to see that the end comes for us all, no matter how rich or famous.

This is a great source if you want to know where any dead musicians are buried. Jammed packed with interesting tidbits regarding the artists life and death. I can't wait for the upcoming new editions in this series.

Several years ago, my daughter and I went searching for Jimi Hendricks grave while we had some time to kill in Seattle waiting for a plane. I had discovered the name of the cemetery in a book I had read, but it still took us about an hour poking around before we found the actual grave. We left a couple of coins and a note that just said "Thanks Jimi". The experience was quite incredible. We both walked away feeling we had done something worthwhile. We had given something back to the music, and to the memory of a great musician. I was hooked. Since then I have made a point of looking for the graves of people who have left their mark on our culture. Last year I had two major disappointments. I spent a couple of hours early one Sunday morning searching in vain for the grave of Muddy Waters in a suburban Chicago cemetery. A few weeks ago, I spent another two hours in a cemetery in L.A. looking for Frank Zappa and Roy Orbison without success. Two nights ago Amazon.com delivered me Scott Stanton's "The Tombstone Tourist". Within ten minutes, the book had paid for itself. I discovered where all three were precisely located, and why I was unable to find Frank and Roy. They are both buried in unmarked graves, about twenty five feet apart. The book is very tastefully written. It is obvious that Scott has a great deal of respect for all the artists he has taken considerable effort to find. There are excellent bios and an incredible wealth of information and trivia on each of the hundreds of artists presented. The only error I have found is that Chet Baker died in a fall from a Paris hotel room. Actually it was Amsterdam. Close enough. I have not found a better reference book on popular culture than "The Tombstone Tourist". Those of you who feel that looking for dead celebrities is a little macabre should get the book and go out to find someone whose work you admire. You will find it a tremendously rewarding experience. Don't forget to take flowers, or an appropriate gift to leave at the grave.

                              Book Description

Maps are stories as much about us as about the landscape. They reveal changing perceptions of the natural world, as well as conflicts over the acquisition of territories. Cartographic Fictions looks at maps in relation to journals, correspondence, advertisements, and novels by authors such as Joseph Conrad and Michael Ondaatje. In her innovative study, Karen Piper follows the history of cartography through three stages: the establishment of the prime meridian, the development of aerial photography, and the emergence of satellite and computer mapping.

Piper follows the cartographer's impulse to "leave the ground" as the desire to escape the racialized or gendered subject. With the distance that the aerial view provided, maps could then be produced "objectively," that is, devoid of "problematic" native interference. Piper attempts to bring back the dialogue of the "native informant," demonstrating how maps have historically constructed or betrayed anxieties about race. The book also attempts to bring back key areas of contact to the map between explorer/native and masculine/feminine definitions of space.

This book seeks to examine the ways in which the cinema has defined, mythified and disseminated British national identity during the course of the twentieth century. It takes the form of a series of linked essays which examine chronologically, thematically and by specific case studies of films, stars and genres the complexities and ambiguities in the process of evolution and definition of the national identity. It argues for the creation of a distinctive British national identity both in cinema and the wider culture. But it also assesses the creation of alternative identities both ethnic and regional and examines the interaction of cinema and other cultural forms (music, literature and television).

When we laugh at Dad's Army we laugh at ourselves, and more than 30 years after it was first broadcast, millions of us are still laughing—whenever and wherever it is repeated. With contributions from the people who planned, produced, and performed in the sitcom, and material drawn from the BBC archives, acclaimed author Graham McCann has written the definitive story of a very British comedy. This is the story of a classic British sitcom and its enduring appeal.

I was excited to get hold of this book. I loved Dad's Army as a kid -- indeed I still do. I fondly remember watching the TV show whenever it was on, and even listening to the wireless adaptations on Sunday nights on New Zealand's National Radio.

McCann devotes the first chapter of the book to an historical account of the Home Guard during the Second World War, its percieved role, the political and military wrangling surrounding its creation, and its eventual disbandment.

The rest of the book deals with the genesis of this most beloved British comedy, from the first idea by Jimmy Perry and its refinement by David Croft, through its developments over the following years.

The book is liberally illustrated with black and white photographs of cast and crew. It also benefits from interviews with survivors of the show both behind and in front of the camera, giving this very much an "insiders" view of the production.

Tracing the various players' careers post-Dad's Army is a nice touch, and there is a comprehensive bibliography as well as excellent endnotes with each chapter. As a bonus, there is also a full episode guide for every episode filmed.

This book is a must read for every Dad's Army fan, and is a welcome addition to my home library.

The first black-and-white series, re-shown for the first time in 1999, attracted 4.6m viewers outperforming Have I got News for You and almost outstripping Channel Four's most popular programme Friends. When the second series was shown on Saturday nights in 1998 it took 7 million viewers and 40% of the audience. This book will be the last word on the series. There have been other books, but this is first to present the whole story from how the series got made - scripts, locations, filming, the real history of the Home Guard, the background to the actors who played in the series, every episode catalogued and much more. The creators have volunteered to open their archives which include the original programme research, annotated scripts and location photographs. Now recognised as one of the great shows of this and any TV era, Perry and Croft have decided the programme requires a monument and this book will be it.

Developers can learn just what they need to know about developing web databases with Microsoft .NET, just when they need to know it. Fully updated for the .NET framework and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET, this book provides the necessary information to make developers comfortable with new Web Database Developmenttechniques.

5 out of 5 stars I found it very useful.......2006-12-21

This MSPress publication is an excellent resource and bridges a rather wide gap. There aren't a lot of books that have its goals, although I believe SitePoint and Wrox have some offerings. This is the best of what I've seen. I gave it 5 stars, although maybe 4.5 would be more accurate. I notice that several reviewers gave it fewer stars, but I think they expected a different type of book. It's more for people who are newer to the topic, or relatively light users, but who may have a little background in the subject. It's not exactly a hand-holder, but there is a safety net (no pun intended), and that accounts for its ability to cover a lot of material and still be an introduction. I used the earlier pre-dotnet version for a course I taught on web-database connectivity, and found it very helpful. Upon returning to this topic recently, I found the dotnet version also to be very useful.

I like this book partly because of its systematic approach and because it focuses on coding instead of the .net ide. A bonus for me, although probably not for more advanced users, is that it is based on Microsoft Access databases (others are mentioned, and of course much of the code is the same). This puts the entire book within the realm of usability by an average person who is more likely to have Access, a PC-based web server (like XP Professional), or a host that provides Access support with the lower-tier service plans. This is probably also one of the reasons that some reviewers don't like the book. There is a lot of emphasis on understanding the processes rather than being a cookbook. The author, Jim Buyens, introduces a topic, then walks through the main code snippets, and finally gives the whole code behind a page. You can download the code from his website, and it works fine (at least all that I have tried). That alone is worth it. Consider the very first chapter. In it, he provides something very useful right away: a web page that connects to a database and shows the entire contents, organized in a table. Because of the broad capabilities of the asp.net datagrid, this code can easily and rapidly be applied to other databases. Some of the other features include a nice photograph gallery, a section on forms and form validation, a full chapter devoted to updating databases through web forms (insert into...), and a very useful section on generating emails.

The book could use an update, since it was written maybe 5 years ago, and is focused on asp 1.0. But all the code still works and is highly useful. Hopefully, MSPress will spend one of their nickels and have it updated.

1 out of 5 stars Tries to do too much and fails completely.......2006-05-03

This is a terrible book. It is neither good for learning ASP.NET or learning Web DB application development. The author is not all that knowledgeable about .NET. He makes some completely wrong claims like where he says roles are not used in forms based security or .NET can't do comparisons against null (he means DB field nulls but doesn't make that clear). A third of the book itemized code "the 17 steps to upload a file are..." Just padding. Put in the relevant code and refer to the source on the CD.

If you want to build web DB apps with ASP.NET and ADO.NET, first get a book on ASP.NET which will include some ADO.NET anyway, then, when you master that, get an ADO.NET book. And get a book on VB.NET or C#, whichever you prefer.

                                                2 out of 5 stars Misleading title.......2004-04-09

I was a little mislead with the title. I was expecting a help with a web-oriented database design. I was looking for info on secure design, user management, multi-language support, database clusters, etc...

But it does not. Actually it only talks about databases in 2-3 chapters and those are on a real basic level (create tables in Access en simple SELECT statements).
All the other stuff is the use of visual studio, Visual Basic, how to drop components, etc.

I do NOT recommend this book to any one with some programming expercience. If you know a little VB, made basic ASP(.NET) pages and played around with Access a few times then this book will not teach you anything new. You will be more with this book: Microsoft Press book "ASP.NET programming with Visual C#.NET", ISBN: 0735619352. All my collegues (8) just loved it.

How ever if you have no to very little programming experience, new to dynamic webpages and still in the learning curve of (basic) database use. I would recommend this book.

This was very helpful book, full of examples. I like the writer's style, which is concise and moves right ahead. However, I wish that Jim used an increasingly popular method to reference the code-- with colored numbers or something to help call out which line he was explaining. His explanations got bogged down a bit by the way he referenced his own code blocks. Visually beefing this up, would have been welcomed.

I found his brief notes and tips to be useful advice- delivered from an experienced programmer to a beginning to intermediate coder. The majority of these were useful points. Authentiction and ADO stuff was good, but I needed more sources as well.

It took me some effort to find this MSPRESS edition. I do hope that MSPRESS hasn't discontinued this and that a new revision is in the works. Reccomended.

It is a general discussion on setting up a web but very little on the web database programming.
