4 out of 5 stars Application of public choice to topics of public finance.......2005-04-12

James Buchanan's Public Finance in Democratic Process, first published in 1967, applies some of the insights of the then newly emerging discipline of public choice to different areas of public finance, such as the provision of public goods, taxation, and public debt finance. Economics analyzes how individuals make decisions in a market setting--call it individual or private choice. Public choice theory uses the same economic tools and concepts and applies them to the analysis of decision making in a collective or public setting, i.e. the political arena.

Economic decisions by individuals when conducting market transactions are more efficient than decisions made through groups in a political setting, for several reasons. Public services are by definition supplied in equal quantity to all citizen-taxpayers. But since different citizen-taxpayers have different preferences, "it will be unlikely that [these] preferences will be fully reflected in the group decision outcome" (p. 14).

In private markets there is a direct link between a product's cost and benefit to the individual consumer. Individual consumers can decide how much they want of different goods and services based on the respective prices of these goods within the context of their overall budget. But no such link exists in the case of publicly provided goods and services. Individual citizens-taxpayers cannot make the same price-quantity adjustments in their consumption of public goods and services as they can with private goods.

Furthermore, how a person is taxed affects his or her demand for public goods, or how much government people want. Under nongeneral (specifically, progressive) taxation, most individual citizen-taxpayers do not bear the full or "true" cost of public services, which creates what is therefore known as a "fiscal illusion". This fiscal illusion leads to a distorted ("too high") demand for public services.

The book reflects its times somewhat, in that it is on the abstract side. A similar book written today would contain more real-life examples, in part to improve legibility, in part to support its argument. But Buchanan's analysis and conclusions are certainly quite persuasive and remain highly applicable to this day.

        Book Description

Macroeconomics, 17e, by Samuelson and Nordhaus, is the classic text that set the standard for principles of economics texts when it was introduced in 1948. This text has been the standard-bearer in principles books for over 50 years, presenting a clear, accurate, and interesting introduction to economics that allows students to study the world and see the patterns of economic life. Bill Nordhaus is now the primary author of this modern treatment of macroeconomics which has been thoroughly updated.

        Book Description

Written in an informal colloquial style, this student friendly principles of economics textbook does not sacrifice intellectual depth in its quest for accessibility. The author's primary concern is to instill economic sensibility in the student. Colander emphasizes the intellectual and historical context to which the economic models are applied.

5 out of 5 stars Another response to the negative review.......2006-05-09

I just finished my introductory economics course with this book, and I found it easy to understand, and sometimes fun to read.
Other students I know also liked this book.
Sometimes quite wordy, but if you're already at the level to read this, I think you'd know how to skip them.

5 out of 5 stars Well liked book.......2005-10-29

I used this book for an MBA economics class I taught last year and my students really liked it. It received much more positive reviews than the one I used the year before.

5 out of 5 stars in response to the negative review.......2004-01-14

In response the previous negative review of Colander's book, I must say the text is one of my favorite texts of a long academic journey. I have an MBA (where I first used the Colander text as a refresher) and am completing an MA in Econ this semester and have often referred to the earlier edition that I own.

As one advances in economics, it may prove beneficial from time to time to go back to the basics, which is what this text is - an introduction to eocnomic reasoning utilizing an unbiased treatment of differing and competing economic theories. There is simply no way any professional economist would call this text advanced! While Colander may address a broad scope of subjects within the field of economics, he does so in a manner consistent with an introductory treatment. One does not even have to use math if preferred.

His conversational style may not be for everyone, but it worked well for me. It's not often that I have laughed out loud reading an Econ text, but I did with this book. I found it to be a refreshing and entertaining treatment of an otherwise dry subject. By the way, I have no affiliation to the publisher or author, which was a concern of the previous negative reviewer. For anyone considering the purchase, or even classroom use of this text, I'd be happy to provide more detail as to why I appreciate Colander's text - just e-mail me at timbuktu66@yahoo.com. In the end, the highest praise I can give any textbook author is to say that it fostered a desire to learn more about that subject. I am a graduate student in Econ today thanks to Colander's text and the professor who steered my toward reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Good Economics book.......2003-01-08

This book was great for my introductory economics course. It would be helpful for anyone interesting in learning more about this important topic.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid at all costs.......2001-01-16

As an introductory economics text, this one is absolutely terrible. The much touted "conversational" writing style is actually a poor imitation of teenage slang and substantially devalues the subject matter. Somewhat paradoxically, the depth and breadth of subject matter is most appropriate for very advanced students -- the students most likely find the writing style ridiculous. The author attempts to augment the usual AD-AS analysis to account for some endogeniety, but economists tell so many lies with AD-AS analysis that it is absurd to introduce additional confusing notation to address an issue that doesn't materially affect issues such as the efficacy of monetary and fiscal policy. Finally, readers should be appalled that publishers/authors submit thinly veiled sales pitches as reviews (see, for example, the first review for this text). Get your students something useful, written and reviewed by distinguised economists, such as Baumol and Blinder.

          Book Description

Black Gold: The Lost Archives of Jimi Hendrix is the first comprehensive biography to authenticate the lost sessions, previously unknown recorded collaborations, and rare film/video documents of one of the most innovative and influential rock guitarists in music history. Hendrix's life is celebrated through exclusive interviews with people who knew him well, including his father, Al Hendrix, musicians Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, his lover and close companion Kathy Etchingham, and many others. Author Steven Roby sifts through a wealth of unreleased and commercially unavailable studio, live, and home recordings to chronicle every stage of Jimi Hendrix's legendary career. In each instance, he tells the reader whether the event was documented and if it is available. In several tragic instances, the recordings are lost forever. Black Gold is the first book to offer a comprehensive analysis of Hendrix's unfinished album, First Ray of the New Rising Sun. Three attempts have been made so far to "finish" it, and the author explains why none have succeeded. The book also explores Hendrix's journeys into jazz with Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk; his excursions into blues with B. B. King, Johnny Winter, and Buddy Guy; and his backing of early rap pioneers The Last Poets. Black Gold features a foreword by Noel Redding, Hendrix's bass player from 1966 to 1969, as well as 45 photos, including several rare and never-before-published shots.

4 out of 5 stars For Hendrix Completists.......2007-06-07

Hendrix left behind thousands of reels of tape containing hundreds of hours of music, much of it never made widely available. This book details all that mass of material and exposes just how much more Hendrix exists than his handful of commercial releases. Little, it appears, ever went unrecorded, though the author chronicles those lost items with great regret. Hendrix is now mythological, and this book only increases his legend by whetting the appetite for more 'new' Jimi that will surely come sooner or later, now that the estate of Hendrix is in charge of his music. Had he lived, it seems likely that Hendrix would have entered a jazz period. If he were alive today, who knows what he'd be playing? Most likely, he'd be more like the drug addled Sly Stone than the lifelong creative artist that Miles Davis was until he died. Still, in his brief 27 years, Hendrix changed music, as this book makes clear.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent balance of facts and history.......2006-12-20

Admittedly, this book will appeal to the Hendrix-ophile more than the casual reader. However, Roby weaves a good thread of history and minutiae that will capture the interest of the casual Hendrix listener as well. Since the book was published, a lot of the "lost" material has been officially released. However, there is a wealth of video and audio that even the most ardent collectors have not seen or heard. (Experience Hendrix possesses some but not all of this un-bootlegged material and will probably release it in dribs and drabs for the next decade or so, consider this: a large armored truck was used in the 70's to transport all of the hundreds of reels of Hendrix material) Roby does neglect covering the Douglas/Hendrix period with the same level of archivists detail. What about all the sessions set up with Tony Williams, Mother Hen/Dave Holland, the apartment jam w/Miles Davis? There is still much entombed in vaults and will be for decades to come. Roby's book scratches the surface but I think as time passes more and more evidence will confirm the importance of Hendrix to pop music and music in general.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the music-lover.......2005-09-24

Maybe 'Electric Gypsy' from Glebbeek is the ultimate biography , this however is more into Jimi's MUSICAL legacy.Full of detail and if you pick this up , you won't regret it...

5 out of 5 stars Getting to the Heart of the Matter.......2003-09-08

Steven Roby has written a masterful account of Jimi Hendrix's recorded legacy. Black Gold is an essential resource for the dedicated Hendrix collector, and is also a great read that would interest anyone who loves Jimi's music. It is the difinitive history of one of rock's leading legends, delving deeply into the recordings he made, and into the man himself. By including quotes made by Jimi and his peers, Roby's unique perspective has illuminated aspects of Jimi's musical life that had previously been shrouded in darkness and shadow.

Roby presented himself with a nearly impossible task, which required talking to musicians, associates, friends and family about the past, then attempting to separate myth from fact when discrepancies arose. It may not be possible to uncover the whole truth, but Black Gold cuts two or three layers deeper into Hendrix's recordings and claims about it, than any previous account.

3 out of 5 stars an essential Jimi read.......2002-10-03

Ever wonder who jammed with who? This book helps you to find out. This book both a comprehensive list of all recordings of Jimi and his band, as well as an intimate look at the lifestyle of one of America's greatest musicians. I skipped over a lot of the lists and dove into the narratives that told stories of Jimi jamming with Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton (Jimi is supposedly the only guitarist to ever play Clapton off-stage), The Who and many other greats. What I enjoyed most about the book was the details about Jimi learning to play the guitar and his first gigs. Jimi is a musician that stayed true to his roots and his own unique style.
I only gave this book 3 stars because, unless you know absolutely nothing about Jimi Hendrix or some of the other musicians in the book, much of what you read you are likely to already know. Redding included many well known anecdotes as filler for his archival list, which is admirably constructed and researched. The only problem is, is that much of what is on the list is unavailable to the public.
Still, if you're a Jimi fan, you have to read it. After all, it's a book about Jimi.

Forwarding the debate on television violence, this book examines the choices made by viewers who were asked to edit different examples of screen violence and discusses the factors these individuals took into consideration when deciding whether violence was acceptable or not. In addition to standard demographic sampling, groups were recruited who would bring added insight into violence, including young men and women who were familiar with violence, policemen, World War II veterans, women with a fear of crime, and parents of young children.

              Book Description

What is the real nature of television, and what is its place in contemporary society and culture? In a provocative rethinking of the medium and its ensuing effects, this book argues that we have misunderstood television and have thus contributed to a distorted view of art and culture in the 20th century. During the final quarter of this century both in academic and popular circles, we have spread wildly exaggerated claims about television's undermining of human consciousness and behavior. Television has become a scapegoat for all sorts of societal and cultural ills. The arguments presented by many researchers on behalf of the ill-effects of TV are fundamentally weak and flawed. On the eve of the 21st century, the claimed distinctions between high art and popular culture have become a final, hopeless repository of pedantry. Television can be understood only by viewing it as an art form, and measuring its role in society and culture in concert with the first principles of human reason and liberty.

What is the purpose of reality television? Does it provide information and education to the audience, or are the program makers simply exploiting real people's lives for the purposes of entertainment? Can we rely on documentaries to follow the ethics of programme making in terms of truth and accuracy?
Real TV offers a wide-ranging, international, contemporary investigation into the field of factual entertainment, combining historical, theoretical, economic, aesthetic and empirical approaches. The book also provides a sustained investigation into ethical issues and public interest in order to show that such concepts are integral to an understanding of the development of factual entertainment.
The current growth rate for "real" TV in factual and fictional television programs, film and websites on both sides of the Atlantic, has given rise to international debate about the function and influence of factual entertainment on audiences and mass media. Real TV presents a timely reflection on the development of factual entertainment and audience attraction to increasingly problematic hybrid forms of factual TV.

If you were to only buy one book on Photoshop this should be it. This book is clearly written, comprehensive, and well organized.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent manual for perfecting your knowledge of Photoshop.......2007-05-16

I am taking an advanced college course in Photoshop and we are using this as our textbook. The writing is clear and the lessons very helpful in perfecting your knowledge of Photoshop CS2. This book allows you to learn at your own rate without spending mega-bucks on a one day workshop. If your are hesitating about this book, don't - GO FOR IT!

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever!.......2007-05-15

I remember the first book I purchased was Photoshop 4 Artistry. That was back in 1996. I was astonished by the book when I started reading at the time. I was the happiest guy on earth. The book simply tells you everything about the software and concepts of photography that is concerned for professional photographers which is my case. It is still the best book about Photoshop in my opinion, especially if you really want to know how to use the pen to create paths, masks, channels, and all the tools to manipulate your photos. I did not need to buy anymore books about Photoshop since I know what to do in my day by day work, but something in the air told me to check this one, The Photoshop Artistry (CS2). I thought, well ten years has passed by let's see what these guys from New Riders would have implemented beyond the prior mentioned book. The digital section alone is worthwhile buying the book, not to mention the rest. The new format of the book is also very interesting. Top notch! The best ever, you are not going to find a better book about Photoshop and photography all together!

                  3 out of 5 stars Too basic.........2007-04-25

I just received this book and I'm quite disappointed. Firstly if you are familiar with Photoshop you may find this book way too basic. Even if you are a beginner there are better and more thorough books to help you master Photoshop. This book doesn't examine topics in depth enough to serve as a good teaching aid.
If you are an advanced user looking to learn something new, this book is not the place to find it. While I'm sure that it has some merit, I personally found it too shallow in its coverage; nether suitable for the beginner nor the experienced user.

3 out of 5 stars good book .......2007-02-13

bought brand new -- but it looked used when it got here - front cover was torn and the pages were folded together -- the book itself is useful for photoshop
