              Product Description

Exactions are payments made by a developer to local governments for the right to proceed with a project. Exactions can include development fees, the dedication of public land, the construction or maintenance of public infrastructure, or the provision of public services. Developers complain that exactions have become excessive, stifling economic growth. Local government officials argue that these levies are essential to growth: Without them, local government could not provide the infrastructure necessary for new development. Although California leads the nation in imposing fees on new residential development, surprisingly little is known about the nature and effects of these fees—for example, the extent to which they are passed on to consumers in the form of higher home prices. This volume presents the results of an econometric analysis of development fees in Contra Costa County—a county in the San Francisco Bay area that has experienced rapid growth in recent decades.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding teaching tool!.......2000-02-24

This brief, colorful and inexpensive book permits students to achieve a sense of ownership and participation in their government. At a time when young people feel disconnected and overwhelmed by the complexity of government, The Annual Report summarizes just where the federal government's money comes from - percent by source and exactly where it goes cents per dollar. Major government programs like Medicaid and Medicare, Social Security and Welfare are described simply and succinctly. I have used this book for about three semesters and it is wildly popular among students at graduate and undergraduate levels. All aspects of government are made accessible from the deficit to the decisions of the Supreme Court. The demographics chapter is a masterful work of art simplifying who we are and how we are changing as an American family and a population. The lists of elected officials and administration representatives with how to contact each is a valuable reference. The current affairs commentary represents a seamless connection between daily news and history. The numerous charts and graphs communicate a vast web of statistical data in clear simple terms with a context and a trend apparent and memorable. This book has led more than one student to feel more ready to participate in government by voting, writing to elected officials and thinking about how government should respond to sometimes intractable problems. The changes in the military are reported unblinkingly and in detail. For teachers who like data, for students who like short, simple and interesting, this is an excellent companion book to the standard text in a wide variety of content areas from public administration to community organizing, from history to managing a non-profit. I look forward to the next edition and thank the author and publisher for great layout and design and pithy usable content.

Meredith Bagby, again, "boils it down" for us and "gives it to us quick", as she cuts through the bureaucratic techno-speak we call "government" and puts it into understandable English.

Robert Neill writes the best stories about living in an outdoors and hunting family. The reader is standing next to the storyteller as the tale unfolds. Seldom have I laughed so hard at the everyday experiences of normal people, especially turkey hunters

                    Book Description

The "rebellious youth music" we know as rockabilly was born in the '50s and enjoyed a great revival in the '80s and '90s. This book is a straight-from-the-heart account of how the genre's greatest artists - author Billy Poore's personal friends - made their mark. Billy gives the low-down on everyone from pioneers like Gene Vincent, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochran and Charlie Feathers, to the next generation of stars like Link Wray, Dave Edmunds, Robert Gordon, Dwight Yoakam, The Blasters, The Stray Cats and BR5-49, to the unlikely artists who have been influenced by rockabilly, including Conway Twitty and The Beatles. His uncensored stories and incredible, previously-unpublished photos deliver an inside look into the wild art of one of America's greatest inventions. The book is also a great reference guide, detailing artists' (from the legends to the one-hit wonders) chart activity, career milestones and tours. With its sentimental foreword by the late Danny Gatton, this book is a must-read for all fans of music and Americana!

This is one of the most compleat histories of Rock an Roll and Rock-a-Billy I have read. It goes through all the building blocks of early rock-a-billy that became what we call rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars Great book by a great guy.......2002-11-13

Rock-a-billy fans around the world owe alot to Billy Poore. He has fought to keep Rock-a-billy in the mainstream of american music his whole life. This book is the climax of that lifes work. This book is written from the heart by a man driven by his love for the music and the artists who perform it.I hung on every word, the stories are great, the pictures awesome.Get the book, read it,you won't find better. If you get the chance to meet Billy, talk to him and catch the passion in his voice and eyes when he tells you of his journey. No other book compares!!!

4 out of 5 stars An odd read..........2002-03-29

I bought this book a few months ago and I'm still not sure what to make of it. It's purely subjective, and it definitely could have standed to have some stronger editing. (Must every verb be abbreviated with apostrophe's, i.e., fixin', rockin', ridin', standin', etc, within the basic context of the author's narrative?)

While I found the book enlightening, I also had a difficult time reading it for more than 15 minutes at a time. The author frequently goes out on tangents, like when he discusses his biker-gang relations, or his crush on every female rockabilly singer, etc.. It's kind of choppy in its outline, construction, and overall writing. He asserts his opinions on most every circumstance, whether it had anything to do with him or not.

The book does provide a personal reflection on many of the rockabilly artists that we know little about. His personal observations are what they are, he sometimes brought out the best in people, and sometimes the worst. His depiction of Gene Vincent is probably the most touching and personal.

Overall I was rather disappointed in the book because it had such great potential. With stronger editing this could have been a great book. His taste in music is definitely right-on and he has a great passion for his topic, but he seems to get in the way of his own story. I found Go Cat Go! by Craig Morrison to be a more enjoyable read, even though it has a broader subject range and no pictures. Billy Poore's book is more of an enlarged fanzine than anything else, which is a shame because I don't think that was the intention. The odd mix of factual history and the author's opinions left me scratching my head on numerous occassions.

Dates covered range mostly from 1954 - 1994, so don't expect to find anything after that. Certainly it still seems he could have discussed The Cramps and Rev. Horton Heat, who have probably done more to promote rockabilly and its history in the past 15-20 years than most other artists.

It should be noted that only the Foreword is written by the late Danny Gatton, and the index is very poor.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......1998-10-27

This book is an excellent chronilogical history on the subject of Rockabilly. I don't think anyone has ever covered so much on the subject as Billy Poore has. Good pictures and many items to learn if you think you knew everything on the subject.

                      Book Description

Written over a span of more than two decades, the essays by Iris Marion Young collected in this volume describe diverse aspects of women's lived body experience in modern Western societies. Drawing on the ideas of several twentieth century continental philosophers--including Simone de Beauvoir, Martin Heidegger, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty--Young constructs rigorous analytic categories for interpreting embodied subjectivity. The essays combine theoretical description of experience with normative evaluation of the unjust constraints on their freedom and opportunity that continue to burden many women. The lead essay rethinks the purpose of the category of "gender" for feminist theory, after important debates have questioned its usefulness. Other essays include reflection on the meaning of being at home and the need for privacy in old age residences as well as essays that analyze aspects of the experience of women and girls that have received little attention even in feminist theory--such as the sexuality of breasts, or menstruation as punctuation in a woman's life story. Young describes the phenomenology of moving in a pregnant body and the tactile pleasures of clothing. While academically rigorous, the essays are also written with engaging style, incorporating vivid imagery and autobiographical narrative. On Female Body Experience raises issues and takes positions that speak to scholars and students in philosophy, sociology, geography, medicine, nursing, and education.

                        Book Description

Why are young women today deeply unhappy with their own bodies? Why do even young girls inflict serious harm to themselves by dangerous patterns of bingeing and dieting? Drawing on a wide source of feminist perspectives this book examines this epidemic of body-hatred.

                        5 out of 5 stars ER HELPER.......2004-05-05

Having never watched ER on NBC, I got hooked on it a year or so ago when TNT started showing 2 reruns back to back each weekday morning. I was lucky to find this book shortly thereafter. This was good for several reasons. First, it gave me cast bios (past and present), episode summaries, and main storylines to help catch me up. Second, it highlights key events that you might otherwise miss if you blink. This is helpful to me since I watch when I get home from work and am sometimes not watching too closely as I prepare for bed. With the help of this book, I was paying close attention and now know how Carter ended up with Dr. Greene's stethoscope. Since this unofficial guide only covers seasons 1-8, I can only hope that Mark Jones is readying the next volume to this award winning show.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Guide.......2004-02-13

The ER Uofficial Guide book was very informative and interesting to read. Since it was actually written in the U.K., it wasn't completely accurate--I noted a few minor mistakes. For instance, they made Abby's last name Myczenski instead of Wyczenski, or they made an error in the Season headings on the tops of the pages. They at least spelled all the actors' names correctly, though they could have re-edited the actual character guide. There also could have been some more recent pictures--Season 7, 8. Anyway, the episode guide was precise and expressed the main points in each episode. I loved it--you won't regret buying this guide if you are a true ER fan.

                        5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Book!!.......2003-07-26

I am a die-hard ER fan and was very satisfied when i read this book. The first part of the book deals with the main characters in the present, then the main former characters, and lastly the supporting cast, with trivia at the end of each major character.

The second part deals with episode reviews and season overviews. It notes the main events of each season with "one to watch" episodes picked out. Each episode is explained in detail, and the "one to watch" episodes have an extra paragraph explaining the aspects that make it a "one to watch."

The book also has awesome photos of cast past and present

This book is exceptional! I've read the reviews several times over and have learned a lot that i didn't already know. It is full of ACCURATE information(for those of you who wrote reviews before me), and very accountable facts noted in the episodes. I would reccomend this book to any die-hard ER fan like me!!

2 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2003-07-18

This book is loaded with inaccuracies, speculation, made up facts, and errors that the author obviously didn't research. Character names are wrong, random facts are made up (i.e. birth dates for major characters) and episode synopses contain incorrect information. The author didn't do his homework. I wish I could get a refund.
