        Book Description

This brand-new principles of macroeconomics text is the most exciting new entry in years. Written by two well-known and well-respected economists, Bob Frank and Ben Bernanke, the text seeks to teach introductory students the core economic concepts-the essence of economics-without overwhelming them with details. Principles of Macroeconomics presents the material in an intuitive way that avoids excessive math. The authors introduce a well-articulated short list of core principles, reinforce them by illustrating and applying each principle in several contexts, and then ask students to work exercises to see what they've learned.

The text seeks to create Economic Naturalists; that is, after reading the text, students will ask (and answer) questions about their economic environment. For example, students will see Braille dots on drive-up ATMs and ask why they're there. Peppered with such thought-provoking examples, Frank and Bernanke not only engage students, but teach them to see each feature of their economic landscape as the reflection of an implicit or explicit cost-benefit calculation. culation.

5 out of 5 stars a thought about Mario Marafioti.......2004-01-07

          Hello there!!!!
I just want to share my thoughts about Mario Marafioti and let me star telling you something about me: I had experience what it's called classical training: thought about breathing, diaphragm, support the tone, breath low, voice placement, keep larynx low and so on. None of them really works for me, it was painful and besides that expensive, because each teacher charge at least $60/hr, so listen to my lessons tape, I rely on what's going on, my sound was not me, too much hard work, too much support, too dark "covering" and so on...., so what I did. First at all, pay attention to my normal speaking voice and carefully understand that I could speak really hight as well as low even so my voice at those was very weak, but the notes were there, so what I need to do!!! (see seventh principle/Mario Marafioti).
If you are open to new ideas, I sincerely recomend this book, you should study it very carefully and probably you will get the idea " Singing should be......"

because the bottom line is: We are not musical instruments, we are singers, who convey feelings and emotions trought the correct use of the speaking voice and the clearly/easy it's production the better it will.

          5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2003-02-08

This is indeed the most superb book on correct singing technique. I, myself, studied for many years under teachers who taught me vowel modification and other such nonsense. I was told by many teachers that, although beautiful, my voice was too small to fill an opera house. They suggested I find other venues for singing. Then, I began studying with a teacher who was a master at the technique outlined in this book. I have never, in my life, heard anyone whose voice came close to the clarity, resonance, and overall production of this man. In time, with the careful study of Marafioti's book and excellent instruction of my teacher, my voice too gained a resonance that fills a very large house (without a microphone). Any serious vocal student should view this book as the bible of proper vocal technique. There are many teachers out there, each with their own technique. Let me assure you, if it does follow what is outlined in this book...Run!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Book on Singing EVER.......2002-12-31

What Marafioti discusses, with complete support and input from Caruso himself as citations from his many letters proves, is the simplest, easiest and most sensible vocal method out there. Moreover, it makes perfect sense to even a non-singer. Don't force. Measure the breath with the diaphragm, this being the support that so many singers today couldn't even begin to define. OPEN YOUR MOUTH. WHY is that not taught across the board?? I would challenge any reviewer who wants to attack this superb and hugely important work to actually say what they find wrong with the technique set forth by the author, rather than just some ad hominem nonsense that doesn't help anyone. Also, they should be a classical singer, which the one negative reviewer is not. There is no reason why there can't be some fundamental rules for teaching voice, despite the ridiculous claims that no one technique is better than the other. PLEASE read this book if you are interesting in the study of voice, as it may well be the only work on subject you'll ever need. Read it BEFORE finding a voice teacher, so you can better know what to look for in a teacher and how to select one. As Marafioti points out, there are many, many charlatans out there, ruining classical singing. With the knowledge gained from this book, you should be able to avoid them and find one who truly can help you develop your voice to its fullest potential.

          1 out of 5 stars really bad.......2001-01-21

The book is really bad and has nothing to do with what Caruso did. Marafioti just knew him and abused his name. If you want to learn how Caruso sang, get yourself his recordings (best one is Complete recordings by RCA, the new Naxos series are said to be good or also Pearl). Than just sit back, relax and - hear!

5 out of 5 stars Very sound vocal philosophy.......2001-01-18

This is the first book on voice that I ever read. That was several years ago and I still love it. It's more philosophical than it is technical but Marafioti's principles of voice are sound, and both educational and inspirational. It's a good book for the serious student of voice to read.

                      Book Description

A critically important question confronts many countries in the post-Cold War epoch: are culturally determined political conflicts inevitable?

While acknowledging people's need for identity, and that different cultures necessarily produce differentiated identities, Professor Meyer argues that difference only leads to intolerance and violence when politically ambitious leaderships exploit it. Fundamentalism is therefore essentially a political phenomenon that has occured in all civilizations, particularly in contemporary Europe and North America. In the present age of globalization, Meyer suggests that social crisis grows out of an exclusionary dynamic that marginalizes growing numbers of people. Little wonder that the deepening of inequality between North and South has undermined popular confidence in secular leaders' vision of development and triggered a divisive fundamentalism that declares war on modernism and, ironically, on traditionalism too.

This argument contains real grounds for optimism. In seeking political strategies to defeat fundamentalism and the identity mania that accompanies it, the focus must be on developing economic and social structures that give all citizens a common interest in the operations of a socially responsible market economy, which delivers to all.

4 out of 5 stars An informal history of the shows that defined PBS.......2003-05-08

"The PBS Companion: A History of Public Television" represents an informal history of public television in the United States. David Stewart recalls he beginning of some major public television programs, such as "Masterpiece Theater" and "Sesame Street," that transformed "educational TV" into "public TV" in 1967. Noncommercial television programming has survived a half-century of government and corporate influence, institutional rivalries, administrative ineptness, frequent bouts of banality, and grandstanding politicians. Except for the first chapter, Stewart devotes each chapter to a specific series, which will appeal to readers in terms of their particular interest in such programs. Consequently, what we have is not a seamless history of public television proceeding from one notable series to the next, but rather a series of chapters devoted to notable programming that are essentially created to stand alone but still continue the general sense of history.

The line up for "The PBS Companion": (1) The Shakespeare Experience is about Frank Baxter bringing Shakespeare to television and setting the bar for educational television on both commercial and noncommercial television; (2) "An Age of Kings" was public TV's first unqualified national success, presenting Shakespeare's history plays in fifteen parts from Richard II to Richard III; (3) "The Ragtime Era" was the most watched noncommercial series up to that time, while the music rights were held by NET; (4) KQED traces the significant impact on public television of the San Francisco station; (5) WETA and the Battle of the Spanish Armada tells of the shaky beginnings of another station; (6) The (Improbable) Beginning of "Masterpiece Theatre" tells of what is probably the signature series for PBS, which began as an attempt to follow-up on the success of "The Forsyte Saga"; (7) The "Upstairs, Downstairs" Years is about the keystone show on that signature series; (8) Revisiting "Brideshead Revisited" is self-explanatory, as is (9) "Mister Rogers in His Neighborhood," made more poignant by the recent passing of Fred Rogers; (10) How They Got to "Sesame Street" provides too brief a look at the most important and beloved PBS program; (11) Fred Wiseman: No Simple Solutions looks at the PBS career of the distinguished documentarian; (12) Julia Child-The French Chef says it all; (13) Talking with Jim Lehrer turns the tables on the distinguished newsman; (14) "Wall $treet Week"'s Louis Rukeyser: One for the Money" is more about the show than the host; (15) Inventing "NOVA" draws a nice contrast between what this show was doing to popularize science compared with the rest of television and even "TV Guide"; (16) "The American Experience" is the most recent PBS success story, although critics originally objected it was not going in chronological order, although I was surprised that the most successful program in PBS history, "The Civil War," is reduced to a sentence fragment; and (17) "Frontline" closes the book with the most adversarial program offered by PBS.

Holding that critics have been perhaps too kind to public television programming, assuming any faults could be ascribed to inadequate funding rather than creative ineptness, Stewart suggests the reverse is true; program executives find "Fawlty Towers" hilarious but never think of considering producing anything similar. Stewart also dismisses the idea that PBS goes out of its way to avoid appearing to be elite (I am reminded of Ethan asking his mother on an episode of "Thirtysomething" if there was television in heaven and she replied, "Yes, but only PBS"). Stewart concludes instead that "public television programs simply reflect the social, economic, and intellectual interests of those who are professionally associated with public broadcasting." Stewart challenges the idea that PBS only makes "safe" program production choices because "public TV can no longer afford to fail" by noting the risks that have been taken, often with great success, as with "The Great American Dream Machine," "An American Family," Mark Russell's political satire, and "The Civil War." Stewart is right in characterizing his effort as an informal history, which should neither preclude someone else form undertaking a more formal history of PBS or distract from this pleasant little look at some classic television programs.

Stand amid soaring Douglas fir in the great hall of Glacier Park Lodge or sit in the setting sun and gaze into the Grand Canyon at El Tovar. This beautiful gift book will transport you to the majestic lodges of our national parks to relive the glory of past vacations or plan adventures anew. This book and the PBS television series of the same title (to air in spring 2002) take armchair travelers into these architectural wonders and explore the surrounding natural beauty of our national parks. Lodges, wildlife, and stunning vistas are showcased in 175 full-color photographs, along with historical documents from the PBS series. In his introduction, Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, offers a call to preserve this national heritage, and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book go toward the rehabilitation of these magnificent buildings.

We purchased this book as a thank-you gift for friends, and we were *delighted* with the quality and beauty of it. Truly glorious photos, not a ton of information but enough, and makes a spectacular gift. Highly recommended.

What a treat to find Great Lodges of the National Parks! Not only is the book full of lucious color photographs of the lodges (both inside and out and every season), but historic images and architectural drawings that make you really appreciate the simple fact that they were built in the first place. You also get the full history along with a sense of what the lodges are like today written in a very accessible style. I know people who are trying to go to all of the lodges in Christine Barnes' books. I plan on beginning this summer. (The book also includes Timberline Lodge in Mt. Hood National Forest outside of Portland.)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with spectacular pictures!.......2002-03-30

                      This is a gorgeous book.
It has 192 pages--loaded with lovely glossy pictures.
Not all of these lodges, however, are located in the national parks.Timberline Lodge is in a national forest and Oregon Caves Chateau is located at a national monument.
The pictures in this book are breathtaking. Historical pictures as well as present day pictures are located in the book.
This book is VERY similar to the Great Lodges of the West book (also by Christine Barnes). Some of the EXACT same pictures that are in the Great Lodges of the West book are in this book!
But this book adds more pictures.
This one has more pages (as compared to 136 pages) and this one has more pictures. Also covered in this one is Belton Chalet and Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (which the other book doesn't cover in full detail).

                      16 lodges are featured:
                      1) Old Faithful Inn (Yellowstone National Park- Wyoming)
                      2) The Ahwahnee (Yosemite National Park- California)
                      3) Paradise Inn (Mount Rainier National Park, Washington)
                      4) Timberline Lodge (Mount Hood National Forest- Oregon)
                      5) Oregon Caves Chateau (Oregon Caves National Monument-Oregon)
                      6) Crater Lake Lodge (Crater Lake National Park-Oregon)
                      7) El Tovar (Grand Canyon National Park- South Rim)
                      8) Zion Park Lodge (Zion National Park)
                      9) Bryce Canyon Lodge (Bryce Canyon National Park)
                      10) Grand Canyon Lodge (Grand Canyon National Park- North Rim)
                      11) Glacier Park Lodge (Glacier National Park- Montana)
                      12) Belton Chalet (Glacier National Park)
                      13) Lake McDonald Lodge (Glacier National Park)
                      14) Many Glacier Hotel (Glacier National Park)
                      15) Sperry & Granite Park Chalets (Glacier National Park)
                      16) Prince of Wales Hotel (Waterton Lakes National Park,
                      Alberta, Canada)

Also in the front and back is a map that shows where these lodges are located. In the back are Preservation Resources and Travelers' Resources (websites, reservation information, etc...)
Although I didn't know that this book would be so similar to the Great Lodges of the West book--(it's just a bigger version), I do not regret buying it. I have them both and the pictures are mesmerizing.

                      4 out of 5 stars nice book.......2007-04-17

Very nice book with a lot of SAS code. It is very helpful for the statistician who wants to enter the business area.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Powerful.......2006-01-19

This book is really a useful step by step guidance to build a model using logistic regression. It is very practical and to the point. This book covers the business envrionment from high level and go down to the working data level and then again relate how the results from mining the data can solve busines problem. It is a treasure for data mining analyst and modelers.
Just as the author point out, although there are many new model building techniques emerge every year, logistic regression still remains a very powerful data mining and model building tool. And it is well demonstrated in her detailed examples.

5 out of 5 stars The True Data Mining Cookbook.......2005-08-29

In the Data Mining field, this book is the most clear and concise and well-organized book for many years. This book truly deserves to be called the Data Mining Cookbook because it appeals to everyone interested in the subject. In other words, her writing style appeals to both the non-statistician and the statistician. The theory is well explained for the general public. She gives the kind of details that allows anyone with a college education and who is determined to be able to do some of this analysis on their own or at least supervise someone who is doing it for them.

5 out of 5 stars Predictive Modeling Methodology For The Non-Statistical!.......2004-03-24

Logistic Regression From A - Z! This book has it all.

The author lays out clear, concise methodologies to build robust predictive models using SAS. The nice thing is this book lays out the process step by step with SAS code examples. You do not have to be a statistics major to understand how to use the built in SAS functionality.

The modeling methods are unbelievably detailed including topics like defining the objective function, testing variables for predictability using chi squared, fitting continuous variables using the most linear variable transformation format (squared, cubed, cubed root, log, exponent, tangent, sine, cosine, etc... 19 total formats), changing categorical variables to continuous indicator variables for logistic regression use, using stepwise, backward, and score regression methods to further eliminate less predictive variables, defining deciles, and model testing methods like bootstrapping, jackknifing and gains tables to validate the model.

I do not fully understand the mathematical concepts involved throughout the entire process nor do I want to. The book provides a consistent repeatable programming methodology to follow that is broken down into very quantifiable steps.

I would recommend this book for anyone with limited statistical knowledge and a need to understand predictive modeling programming methodologies. Knowledge of the SAS programming language is essential to make full use of this material. The book uses real life examples from the banking, insurance, and marketing industries and contains additional valuable information related to these fields.

1 out of 5 stars DM Cookbook CD ROM.......2002-04-16

Book is OK, but DON'T BUY THE CD-ROM! I dropped [a large amount] for what I thought would be a worth-while "self-learning" course on Data Mining programming in SAS. To my great disappointment, I found that while Olivia had included the code (which you can type in yourself), there was NO DATA PROVIDED, making the code all but useless (can't run the models with no data!). I e-mailed her asking for some kind of a sample data set. She agreed, but after months of begging she provided nothing whatsoever. Don't make the same mistake I did - STAY AWAY FROM THE CD-ROM!!!
