Book Description
Chris C. Carvounis provides the background, the theory and definition, and the analytical tools necessary to understand the scenarios now being played out in the various LDCs. After presenting general issues related to LDC debt from the functionally distinct positions of borrowers, lenders, and negotiators, Carvounis examines in detail the cases of five specific debtor nations--Turkey, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Poland. For each country, a chronology provides background information and a commentary analyzes the key debtor-related matters. The commentaries discuss national economic development strategy, the orchestration of internal and external economies, the role of the central government as investor and regulator, domestic and foreign political factors pertinent to the country's external debts, and other significant factors.

Not even Mediocre: Bad........1999-12-03
Azariadis doesn't display the fun or power of macroeconomics. A dull book that intends to be "modern" in its language, and only hides the economics. There are five or six better advanced macroeconomics book to choose from. Buy it only and only if required in the reading list!
Mediocre.......1999-05-16
Not that well organized or motivated. A reader interested in Macroeconomics will not get much out of this book unless they look very hard. Intended as a book for first year graduate students in economics, it fails to bridge the gap between concept-building undergraduate courses and the relatively more mathematical graduate courses.

Description:
This paper analyzes the role of nominal assets in ranking intertemporal budget policies in a growing open economy. Budget policies are ranked in terms of the public's intertemporal tax liability. In our small open economy model, the constraint for the valuation of private and public financial assets is in terms of the exogenous foreign price level. We show that this limits, under purchasing power parity, the scope of the government to influence the real value of financial assets using fiscal and monetary policy instruments.

Book Description
Intertemporal macroeconomics relies on microeconomics and general equilibrium analysis to describe choices of agents over a long period of time, perhaps infinitely long. To this, methods of growth theory are linked and the effects of policy interventions are examined as the interaction between decisions of agents and policy interventions. Two basic approaches areexplored: models of infinitely-lived agents (Cass-Ramsey-Koopmans approach) and models of overlapping-generations (Allais-Fisher-Samuelson approach). In addition to fiscal policy, the more controversial questions concerning monetary models and monetary policies are considered. The book offers a framework and a systematic exploration of these and related questions. It also introduces models of endogenous growth, both real and monetary models.

Excellent introduction to monetary growth model.......2001-12-11
The book is marvellous. It cover both continuous and discrete time monetary growth model. I use it as my reference in studying the exam. The math appendix is also brillant.
Book Description
This book is concerned with the long-run effects of budgetary and financial policy on aggregate demand and supply. Here the long run is characterized by the accumulation of public debt and foreign assets. This gives rise to a number of questions. Will the long-run equilibrium be stable? What does long-run instability imply? Is the long-run multiplier smaller than the short-run multiplier? Can the long-run multiplier become negative? This book takes a new approach to macroeconomic policy. It assumes a growing economy, as opposed to a stationary economy. And it assumes that the government fixes the deficit rate, as opposed to the tax rate. It is argued that economic growth is an important factor of long-run stability. Similarly, it is argued that a fixed deficit rate is an important factor of long-run stability.

Book Description
This book is an original and rigorous effort to incorporate into modern general equilibrium macroeconomics an analysis of the transactions and accumulation behavior of individuals. It has become widely recognized that much of the demise of contemporary macroeconomic analysis is attributable to the absence of a foundation in microeconomic and general equilibrium theory. This study attempts to remedy these shortcomings. The author first investigates the way individual agents trade and accumulate money, bonds, and goods over their life cycle. The explicit introduction of trading costs in the form of a transactions technology sets this analysis apart from the available literature. The author then examines the consequences of these results for the behaviour of the economy as a whole. The role of a government in aiding the economy to attain an efficient equilibrium is discussed. Finally, the author analyzes the behaviour of prices, quantities traded, and assets held when information is incomplete and markets do not clear instantaneously. In this situation the learning behaviour of the individual determines the dynamics of the system.
Book Description
This book offers a comprehensive analysis of long run effects of inflation on real activity. The first part presents detailed surveys of the theoretical and empirical literature. The second part introduces a monetary version of an overlapping generations economy with production and a single outside asset as a base model and offers thereby a unified framework to organize the debate. Drawing on recent contributions from the theoretical literature and new results established by the author, various modifications to the base model are discussed. These modifications address a diverse range of features such as imperfections in credit markets, random liquidity needs, transaction aspects of money in a context with multiple means of payment, and the coexistence of multiple outside assets. Throughout the second part of the book consistent notation is used, and particular attention is paid to a careful classification of comparative statics and dynamic properties of steady state equilibria.

Description:
In this paper we reconcile two opposing views about the elasticity of intertemporal substitution (EIS). Empirical studies using aggregate consumption data typically find the EIS to be close to zero, whereas calibrated models designed to match growth and fluctuations facts typically require it to be close to one. This contradiction is resolved when two kinds of heterogeneity are acknowledged: one, the majority of households do not participate in stock markets; and two, the EIS increases with wealth. We introduce these two features into a standard real business cycle model. First, limited participation creates substantial wealth inequality as in the U.S. data. Consequently, the properties of aggregates directly linked to wealth (e.g., investment and output) are mainly determined by the (high-EIS) stockholders. Since consumption is much more evenly distributed than is wealth, estimation from aggregate consumption uncovers the low EIS of the majority (i.e., the poor).

Description:
In this paper, we explore the possibility of having money as a source of indeterminacy in endogenous growth models. We adopt the simple Ak model of endogenous growth to be the main analytical vehicle whose balanced growth paths do not display local indeterminacy. Money is introduced via either a general cash-in-advance (CIA) constraint or a pecuniary transactions costs (PTC) technology. It is shown that local indeterminacy of the dynamics is due to the presence of an intertemporal substitution effect on capital accumulation that works against and dominates the conventional inflation effect of Tobin [1965, Money and economical growth. Econometrica 33(4), Part 2, 671]. If money is growth-rate superneutral, then the intertemporal substitution effect is absent so that local indeterminacy cannot occur. Finally, the strength of the intertemporal substitution effect depends positively on the intertemporal elasticity of substitution in consumption.

Contains some real gems.......1999-03-31
This book is worth the price if only for the paper by Ed Green, which has, with a slight delay, spawned a huge literature in dynamic contract theory. Chapters V and VI, by Townsend and Wallace and Beveniste, will also be looked back upon as neglected early work. Jacklin's paper was quite important as well.

Customer Reviews:
Prepare Ye the Way of Bil Keane!.......2000-09-01
Two side-splitting comic panel artists, the legendary Johnny Hart and the ever-pursued Bil Keane build their cartoon crown of thorns in this novel concept book. Although the slightly unnerving image of the Apostles looking like Jeffy and PJ can give one pause, the message is certainly clear and enlightening. Makes a great gift for letting your Sunday School friends know your sense of humor.
Holy Cow, Holy Smoke & Holy Toledo.......2000-07-16
Mirth for the Millenium presents 2000 good reasons to be a happy Christian. There's enough material here to keep preachers and inspirational speakers tickling the funny bones of their audiences for two more millenia. You can almost imagine Jesus himself smiling when he hears these quips, quotes and jokes passed around his modern day followers. Try this book whether you're a believer or not.
Book Description
At a time when most girl groups merely swayed back and forth on the stage, the Marvelettes came out of nowhere to take on the music world and give Motown its first #1 pop record, "Please Mr. Postman." During the next decade the Marvelettes evolved to the sexy, sultry sound of "Don't Mess with Bill" and other Billboard top-40 hits. What happened in between and why their rise to the top was followed by their sudden demise is the brutally honest story behind The Original Marvelettes: Motown's Mystery Girl Group.
Find out first-hand from Katherine Anderson Schaffner, "the tall one," what really happened on stage...and behind closed doors. Includes interviews with other giants of Motown.

A Great 60's read !!.......2005-12-01
If you love those fabulous girl groups of the 60's, then you must read this one. Really fun and informative from one of the great Girl Groups that very little is known about. Very well written.
By the way, when are we going to see a book about the SHANGRI-LAS??
Again, another wonderful act that very little is known about.
Haven't Fallen Yet.......2005-12-01
The Golden Marvelettes are still in the hearts of die hard Motown Fans...move over Diana, Martha... Gladys Wanda and Katherine still reign...
Long overdue but well worth it.......2005-03-25
( Cover photo: Clockwise from top center, Katherine Anderson Schaffner, Gladys Horton Coleman, Georgeanna Tillman Gordon, Wanda Young Rogers )
At long last, in March 2004, the Marvelettes finally got their own story told, so late after the biographies of many other Motown colleagues had come and gone. Author Marc Taylor faced a daunting task asking Motowners entering their 60s to remember in the early 21st century, events of the 1960s. An early member of the group ( originally a quintet), Wynetta Cowart Motley, had left in 1962 when the group's success had only gotten under way. Georgeanna was forced from the group by illness in 1965; she died of lupus in 1980. Gladys offered only limited participation, saying she was working on a book of her own, and Wanda had fallen far from the groups heyday and had known many years of alcohol and substance abuse.
That left Katherine to primarily tell the story of the Marvelettes tenure at Motown, but it didn't hobble at all the success of Mr. Taylor's finished work.
Ms. Anderson-Schaffner is scrupulously honest in her recall giving her group their due without overstating their talent. In particular, when it comes to the later 60s and the group's unceremonious disbanding, she is just as quick to place appropriate blame on the group's internal dissention as much as Motown's by-then corporate indifference.
Nothing can change the fact that the Marvelettes were the first artists to give Motown a No. 1 pop single ( "Please Mr. Postman," December 1961 ), and their string of subsequent and pleasing hits are as integral to the Motown story as the more known successes of the Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations, Stevie Wonder & Marvin Gaye.
Gladys was the groups lead singer on early successes like "Please Mr. Postman," "Playboy," "Beechwood 4-5789," and "Too Many Fish In The Sea." It was later on, when producer-composer Smokey Robinson turned his interest toward the group, that Wanda Young Rogers was brought forth to sing lead. The petite Wanda, giving breathy and seductive readings to Robinson's more adult styled compositions, gave the group something they hadn't had till then: sex appeal. Wanda's 'little sexy-country voice', as Robinson termed it, exists on immortal later Marvelettes songs like 'The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game,' 'My Baby Must Be A Magician' and, especially, 'Don't Mess With Bill.'
This book is highly recommended to anyone who loves 60s Motown music. And now, perhaps, may we have the life and career stories of Mary Wells and Junior Walker, for instance?
Presto, Change-O, Alikazam.......2005-01-05
What a book! Marc Taylor goes way underground to come out with the 60s story that could only have happened in Detroit, the saga of the marvelous Marvelettes. Somehow he got the cooperation of the "tall one," Katherine Anderson, and so at every turn we hear Katherine's version of events, always a little bitter and skewed, although she always prefaces her remarks with something like, "Oh, I didn't really mind, BUT--" We take the whole tumultuous roller coaster ride from sleepy little Inkster, Michigan (remember on American Bandstand when an addled Marvelette claimed that "Detroit is a suburb of Inkster" and then she got laughed right out of the group?) to the disastrous final move of Motown to LA during the course of which the Marvelettes just got forgotten about and had to disband. In the face of what seems like extensive drug, drink and mental problems of their lead singer, the "wanda-ful" Wanda Young, it's surprising they stayed afloat so long, not to mention being able to record such masterworks of the human spirit as "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game," "My Baby Must be a Magician," "Don't Mess with Bill" (all written and produced by Smokey Robinson) and the divinely inspired cover remake of "When You're Young And In Love." Taylor takes us there every step of the way.
Others have criticized him for relying too heavily on Katherine's jaundiced memories. But what was the guy supposed to do? She has a good and extensive memory and she seems to recall every slight and every hurt ever dealt to her, all under a cover of pretended indifference. Besides, most of her stories get corroborated by others Taylor interviews, whether they be members of the Vandellas, or Brenda Holloway, or perhaps some of the mysterious Aldantes--the backup girl singers who wound up singing on 75 percent of the later Motown releases. I wish there were a movie of this book. It out does "Dreamgirls" the musical.
A Marvelous Story of the Marvelettes.......2004-10-21
Many people think the Supremes are what put Motown on the map. The startling truth is, the Supremes probably never would have happened if it weren't for the Marvelettes. In 1961, "Please Mr. Postman," by the Marvelettes, was the hit that kept Motown Records from sinking.
This and other startling revelations are found in "The Original Marvelettes: Motown's Mystery Girl Group" by Marc Taylor. The good and the bad are there in a tantalizing dichotomy. This is a book that will please the reader who has a casual interest in girl groups, yet has the depth that a die-hard girl-group fan wants.
The girls in the Marvelettes were thrilled and shocked that what started as informal high-school singing had instantly launched them into national fame. But they weren't ready for what was to come next. Motown execs asked them to quit high school. They were put on a grueling tour, riding a bus with no bathrooms stopping in towns that wouldn't let blacks use their bathrooms. In fact, shocking incidents like these are the best part of the story.
The book was created mostly by input from Katherine Anderson Schaffner, "the tall one," who was also the only member of the group from the beginning to the end. The story includes quotes from other group members and other girl-group icons. Not only is the story about the girl-group days, but also the events, sometimes bittersweet, that happened to the women after their years of fame. The photos are good ones, not the usual seen-them-everywhere shots. Marc Taylor has been writing about soul music for more than a decade and deftly handles the amazing story of this well-loved group.

Winston Cup Series driver Mark Martin is in the driver's seat, providing a speedy tour through America's fastest-growing sport. In typical Dummies style, NASCAR for Dummies is filled with fun stuff such as lists of the 10 greatest drivers of all time, the 10 can't-miss races, and 10 future stars. It also contains plenty of information--from what NASCAR stands for and what makes a stock car a stock car to the rules of Pit Road and quick overviews of the 21 racetracks that host Winston Cup Series races. There's even good, practical advice about attending races (secure lodging well in advance, decide between infield and grandstand tickets, etc.) and pointers on how to best appreciate the televised races. After reading this book, you'll have no trouble qualifying as a NASCAR fan. --Sunny Delaney

Customer Reviews:
NASCAR For Dummies.......2007-06-11
I am a Sports Illustrated, ESPN sorta reader, anything short and with lots of pictures I will read, short attention span. I am a NASCAR fan and thought I knew alot about the sport and originally bought the book for my wife, but I must say I not only read the whole book in two days I also learned alot that I did not know or what I thought I knew. Excellent book, interesting reading and even if you are not into the sport it is just fun to read. Excellent Excellent book......
So-So.......2007-06-02
I bought this book in 2004 when I first started getting into Nascar, and even back then it was a little outdated. Now, with all the changes in rules and even teams, its more than "a little outdated". One of the chapters includes a list of drivers to watch for in the future, including Champion Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Junior along with some drivers who barely race now. Even the information on tracks is past tense by now. For instance, we went to Lowe's Motor Speedway and followed his information on where race shops were located, only to discover that 90% of those had moved to different cities/locations. There are some basics in here that the newbie might appreciate, but be warned that it isn't up to date.
I learned so much!.......2006-07-17
I am a new fan to NASCAR and I already know more than most longtime fans thanks to this book. It is written by Mark Martin, so you know it has lots of "insider" info. Even though Martin has been in the business for a long time, he wrote in a way that made it easy for me to understand, even with my limited knowledge. I enjoy watching NASCAR races every weekend even more because I actually know what's going on! I now know what a track bar is and what happens when you put a "rubber" in the right rear. Before reading this book, I would have been pretty sure that was obscene! You will enjoy reading this book but you also be able to keep it around for reference when you want to learn more about a particular track or adjustments being made on pit road. I highly recommend this book to a new fan or the most diehard fan out there.
Good intro for the NASCAR novice.......2005-10-12
I wanted to learn about NASCAR and knew nothing about it... and this book did a good job of introducing it to me. My one complaint is it doesn't talk enough about what's going on in the actual races, and I still feel a little lost about what exactly is happening on the track, how exactly the race works, and what specific strategies the drivers are using. A little more on the actual racing and this book would've been perfect. But it's still an excellent intro if you're looking to learn about the sport.
Turn left and hit the gas.......2005-09-18
My boss once jokingly told that's what NASCAR is about: turn left and hit the gas.
Then I went to the Alllstate 400 at the Brickyard and now I've read Mark Martin's NASCAR FOR DUMMIES. It's looking a little more complicated than fast left turns.
The author's enthusiasm for the sport of NASCAR racing is contagious. As the driver of the Viagra-sponsored car #6 in the Nextel Cup series, he ought to know what he's talking about from the inside out and about 188 mph.
Chapter 1 ('NASCAR Racing-the best sport around', pp. 9-24) tells you how men (well, mostly men) driving cars that look vaguely like your father's Taurus ended up racing them around oval tracks in front of millions of spectators and television viewers and why you couldn't possibly not be excited about this. Like most professional sports, NASCAR has acquired corporate sponsors. It is arguably the most logo-plastered sport in the world, a fact that Martin explores in 'The Big Business of NASCAR' (ch. 2, pp. 25-34). Martin convinces you that that's a good thing, and before you know it, you know the primary car sponsors as well as the drivers and their car numbers.
The rest of the book takes you from zero to sixty in a fairly easy stretch of reading. If, like me, you started this book after attending a race or two and just getting at toe-hold on the sport, you won't end up an expert. But you'll be in good shape to understand the basics of every major area of the sport and to learn more as your exposure grows.
Mark Martin is not a great writer, but you don't buy the Dummies series for great writing. You buy Tolstoy if you want great writing. What Martin effectively does is lets you know that there's a whole lot more to NASCAR racing than you thought when you got yourself into this, but that you can learn a fair chunk of it pretty quickly. It's also organized as a handy reference book for when you need to go back to look up a topic you breezed over a little quickly on the first go-around.
I bought this book because there's a strong NASCAR culture in the company I joined. My boss sponsors the 18, driven by Bobby Labonte. See, I knew how to say that right. You can too. Buy the book.
