This comic strip is not just the funnies! It's one of the few newspaper strips that has plotlines, not just gags. Joe and Marcy are based in a reality that could be our neighbors...could be ourselves. A great strip, because you can tell the artist/writer loves the characters, too!

Even though this is a book of comic strips is it truely depicts the real life events that occur in young American couples lives. The additional treat is that the events are told from an African American perspective. However, any nationality will appreciate the humor and every day truthfulness of the Cobb's. This is one book that you will have a lot of trouble putting down once you start to read it. I hope Robb Armstrong continues to write such great comic stips for our entertainment as well as education

Nice Little History of Mothers Mk I.......2007-08-04

This book contains a pretty decent history of Zappa and the Mothers from 65 - 70. The anecdotal information is delivered by the guys who lived the experience, Preston, Black, Collins, Estrada, Gardener, and others who joined later. The actual history is a wee bit short and the writing style is somewhat... well, James clearly doesn't write books and wasn't educated to write books for a living, let's just put it that way. Still, it is and enjoyable, quick read.

An interesting read for all who want to learn about the early Mothers. Don't expect to understand the contradictions that are Frank Zappa after reading this. There probably isn't anything that could impart that kind of understanding.

This was a fairly entertaining read about the early years of Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Overall this was a fun, quick read but it would probably only interest you if you were into Zappa.

Hey! Someone actually wrote a decent book on Frank Zappa!.......2005-02-22

Billy James has actually written a decent book on Frank Zappa. Unlike most authors who have written on this subject, James refrains from blathering prose that seems to exist mainly to show readers how "literate" and "intellectual" they are. His book is mainly based on interviews that he conducted with members of the early Mothers, and in a style not unlike Stephen Ambrose, transcription excerpts from these interviews form the foundation of the book. I found this book engaging, readable, with only a few minor, forgiveable inaccuracies. Well done, Billy James

Excellent view from a different perspective.......2002-01-15

I've read many books on Zappa and found Necessity is.... to be a
great viewpoint from inside the band itself. So many other books have many stories and thoughts from the authors; many who have interviewed or maybe travelled a bit with FZ to learn more about the inside world, but this book is essentially taken from his bandmates and the stories that they have to tell from that early era of MOI. All of the other FZ books I've read were very good. Its just great to see what it was like for everyone else who worked for the great FZ.....

Exploring his works on stage, radio, and in film, Anderegg reveals Welles's unique position as an artist of both high and popular culture. At once intellectually respected and commercially viable, the Shakespeare Welles gave the American public reflects his unique genius as a writer, director, and actor.

From early plays in school to the Everybody's Shakespeare books and the Mercury Text Records adaptations, Anderegg illustrates how Welles tried to transcend the barriers between the classical and the popular. He argues that "Welles the Shakespearean" sought to be a restorer as well as an innovator by drawing on his knowledge of the abundant, lowbrow popularity of Shakespeare in nineteenth-century America. Welles's three film adaptations of Shakespeare, Macbeth, Othello, and Chimes at Midnight, are examined. Orson Welles' Unexpected Shakespeare.......2005-06-01

This was a wonderful book. It examined Welles' career not in light of Citizen Kane but through his Shakespeare projects. This cast Welles in a very different light for me.

Welles tried to make Shakespeare accessible. To him, Shakespeare should not be something in a glass case at a museum. Thus he kept shaking up the Shakespeare plays he adapted. And critics hated him for it. His film of "Macbeth" in particular got raked over the coals.

The book shows how Shakespeare was regarded in American culture in the 20th Century and how Welles tried to shape that attitude. It is a slim book, but it gives the reader very much to think about in an accessible, jargon-free way.

An exceptionally insightful, well-written book.......1999-10-30

Anyone interested in Shakespeare and Orson Welles will want to buy this extremely useful and unusually thoughtful book. It is quite compact and offers chapters on all of the Shakespeare films Welles made. Anderegg argues tht Welles sought to democratize Shakespeare through the use of mass media such as records, radio, and film. there's a wonderful opening chapter about an I Love Lucy episode with Welles and a stunning conclusion about Welles as a star author (Anderegg contrast him with Bertolt Brecht). The book is very well-written and very accesible. Ideal for classroom use.

I bought Office 2003 Simplified for my college class. I found it to be extremely helpful with refreshing my memory on Excel. Gives step by step instructions on how to navigate through the office programs. I would definitely recommend the book to those who need a refresher course on the programs as well as anyone who is new or computer illiterate.

Wow! What a timesaver........2003-10-17

I didn't realize how much more efficient I could be using Office until I bought this book. Every day when I have a few spare minutes, I just flip through the book and try a different technique or two. Already I'm able to finish my Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Access chores much faster and do what I really love--gourmet cooking!
