Book Description
Here are more than 100 of the best Jewish jokes you'll ever hear, interspersed with perceptive and persuasive insight into what they can tell us about how Jews see themselves, their families, and their friends, and what they think about money, sex, and success. Rabbi Joseph Telushkin is as celebrated for his wit as for his scholarship, and in this immensely entertaining book, he displays both in equal measure. Stimulating, something stinging, and always very, very funny, Jewish Humor offers a classic portrait of the Jewish collective unconscious.
Customer Reviews:
Easy history.......2007-08-15
Good light history of Jewish humor. Lots of classical jokes and a plausible narrative on the the roots of this genre. My only disagreement was with the anti-Arab bias that crept through.
A Big Telushkin Fan.......2007-07-30
I ordered "Jewish Humor" for three reasons:
1.) The previous Telushkin books I read, "Words that Hurt; Words that Heal," and "Jewish Literacy."
2.) The genius I'd discovered years ago in the old LP classic "Woody Allen, The Night Club Years." If anyone has ever said to you, "I shot a moose once. I was hunting upstate New York,..," then you know what I'm talkng about.
3.) My recent subscription to XM radio, where the non swearing comedy channels are loaded with fabulous, classic comedy entirely dominated (I realized one day), by Jewish commedians (Youngman, Allen, Fields, Rivers, Mason, Brooks, Seinfeld, Dangerfield, etc., etc.)
Where others see scholarship, I see affection, grace, humility, and chutzpah. To me, Telushkin is just a big sweetheart. He has accumulated a huge body of work that essentially seeks to share, communicate, explain, heal, find common ground, and help us all understand what it means to be Jewish.
The introduction, in the context of explaining the many subtle nuances of Jewish humor, provides an excellent understanding for Jewish reality. After all, most good humor is based, at least in part, on the truth.
If you're looking for an encyclopedia of Jewish humor, this is a good but perhaps not your best option. If your looking to understand Jewish humor and the Jewish tradition and spirit, this is as good as it gets.
"...the next morning, upon awakening in the woods in a moose suit, Mr. Berkowitz is shot, stuffed and mounted in the New York Athletic Club. But the joke is on them, because its restricted."
If Jacob Cohen(Rodney Dangerfield)Were a Rabbi..........2006-12-29
I saw Rodney Dangerfield 'allavahshulim'(rest in peace)answer a heckler at Detroit's Ford Auditorium, with:"I remember when I had my first beer."I still use it-but I don't consider it specifically,Jewish. And although Rabbi Telushkin goes into great detail(beginning in the introduction)into why this isn't about ethnic humor in general,my favorite example is a footnote in chapter one(p.29)while Telushkin was being heckled...whoops.."challenged my assertion that early Judaism promoted the parent-child relationship:...('heckler')"Isn't it true that God's first commandment to Abraham was to leave his father's home?..."It is true,"I answered(Telushkin)."But he was seventy-five at the time(Genesis 12.4);he was entitled."
Lb. for lb.,Telushkin is the hippest rabbi I can think of(I'm a non-Orthodox Jew who attends services at a Conservative synagogue);I'd rate the late Abraham Joshua Heschel, second.Telushkin has written pretty terrifically on the widest range of subjects to rate him otherwise.
Just plain enjoyable - You don't have to be Jewish..........2005-01-24
This book is a real pleasure to read. Rabbi Telushkin not only tells some wonderful jokes he analyzes them in an interesting way. In his preface he notes that Jews do not joke about everything but have a certain set of subjects from verbal aggresiveness, to professional ambition which they persistently joke about. His message in the book is that the Jews joking about themselves tell a lot about their values, and that their jokes are really a mirror to the soul. So it is not surprising that one of the main subjects if the close relation of parents and children, and the tremendous worry pressure love concern parents show for their children. Telushkin does not develop an overall theory of Jewish humor though he of course notes that laughing at oneself is often a way of protecting oneself from the insults of others. An it is too a way of bringing about a kind of group or communal solidarity. Those that can laugh with me are really my friends. The fact that Jews so specialize in laughing at themselves Telushkin points out also contributes to their having had a predominant role in ' comedy in America. He cites the long list of Jewish comedians from the old line Burns, Groucho and other Marxes , Jack Benny , through the Milton Berle, Henny Youngman Phil Silvers down to the Seinfeld Billy Chrystal generation. Anyone who leaves out Alan King Jerry Lewis Buddy Hackett should of course be castigated for this. In any case the main point about this book is ' Try it you'll like it' Once in the Subway there used to be an add which went ' You don't have to be Jewish to like Levi's ryebread' I think the same might be said about this book. You don't have to be Jewish ( though it probably helps) to get many a good laugh out of this excellent work.
Good analysis on tasteful + questionable jokes about jews.......2004-09-19
This is the type of book that puts a smile on your face while you think about why these kind of jokes are funny. The writer makes historical/cultural comments on the jokes involved and uses such catchy chapter titles such as: "And I used to be a hunchback: assimilation and its delusions", "How did you create that hurricane: jokes on jewish business" or "God as an underacheiver". Some are old and familar but there is plenty of new material. Of course, my favorites poke fun at the Rabbis. Since the writer is one, he knows how to make me laugh. ;-)
Highly recommended.

Book Description
A clear, practical, and systematic approach to learning how to play the great variety of scales and arpeggios that give life and expression to the musical ideas of the modern musician.
Customer Reviews:
Very Clear.......2006-06-30
This is a very clear and well thoughtout approach to the subject of jazz theory. It's one of the best I've seen and it's specific to guitar.
Berle mostly succeeds at accomplishing a very difficult task.......2005-10-28
I must admit that I have had a lot of frustration using this book. Many of Mr. Berle's riffs and excercises are presented without much context, other than an explanation that the riffs are pulled from this chord or that scale, plus chromatic notes. Thus, it sometimes feels like Berle's book is another in a long line of "play the notes of this scale, in some random order, over this chord" instruction books.
However, I think that this book's problems stem more from the scope of the task that the author has taken on. This is essentially a book for beginning jazz guitarists. Given the difficulty of playing jazz, this is not necessarily a book for beginning guitarists, unless conversant in some other instrument.
This book does not undertake to give a thorough explanation of chord voicings, melodic or harmonic theory, or thinking in a modal or non-functional context. For a better understanding of these elements of jazz, you need to seek out more advanced resources. This book undertakes only an explanation of spotting the diatonic key centers and playing the "correct" notes over a few choice examples of standard jazz changes. This in itself is a significant task, especially since Berle attempts to break down the subject to a level that any relatively intermediate guitarist could understand.
I would recommend this book if you have a smattering of theory and a desire to start learning jazz. For a very good all-purpose resource on jazz theory that covers a lot more ground, I would recommend Mark Levine's the Jazz Theory Book.
If you are not a music reader, don't let the lack of Tab put you off of this book. Berle clearly diagrams every position, and each note has both finger and string indicators. This may be one of the best resources for you to start learning to sight read, and you will need that skill if you want to use the more advanced resources on jazz playing, particularly those that are written for all instruments. The resources in this category include The Jazz Theory Book, the Aebersold series, and Building a Jazz Vocabulary.
A deceptively simple introduction.......2003-07-24
Like all of Arnie Berle's books, "Patterns, Scales, and Modes" is so well-organized and well presented that it seems almost too simple. Arnie begins by introducing you do basic scale forms, while simultanously present related arpeggios. That's something not many methods do, but it's something that a lot of jazz teachers think should be emphasized from the start. (Some, like Carol Kaye, don't even teach scales, going straight to arpeggions!) And every scale and arpeggio example is presented with excercises designed to let you hear how the examples sound in a real musical context. That's important.
As others have noted, the book is written in musical notation, not tablature, although there are also diagrams showing how scales and arpeggios lie on the fingerboard. Being able to read music is a necessity- but really, all you need to know is the basics: Names of notes on the staff, how key signatures work and so forth. You don't need to actually be able to read for guitar; Arnie teaches you that as he goes along. A sight reader would be able to progress a bit faster, of course. By the time the reader works his or her way through this book they should feel comfortable playing and improvising basic jazz lines in most any context.
Ideally I'd combine this book with Berle's "Chords and Progressions for Jazz and Popular Guitar" (and a good listening library of jazz records). Together, these two books contain all the aspiring jazz guitarist would need to get started.
A must for all guitarists!.......2003-01-22
This book is filled with useful licks and carefully chosen exercises to master guitar jazz improvisation with minimal effort. This book cleared the mistery of jazz improvisation. After working on the exercises in this book, I am able to improvise jazz guitar only by looking at fake books. A must for all who want to master guitar improvisation.
Could also be applied to 5-string banjo or mandolin.......2002-05-01
This book is an excellent resource, but it's not a beginner's text by any means. If you could play 1/4 of this book by memory, you'd be able to improvise under all manner of circumstances. By all means, learn to read music before you use this book.

Book Description
Everyday viewers are confronted with shocking news reports and sensational images about DNA and cloning, the fight against AIDS, cancer and depression.
TV stations such as Lifetime currently devote entire programs to women's health and popular sitcoms are now dealing with issues like mammograms, breast cancer and hormone replacement therapy.
Wild Science investigates this worldwide boom in health culture. The book helps to explain how popular culture-the principal channel by which the non-scientific community understands illness-implicates national health policies and effects medical research funding. This innovative and controversial volume reveals the new technologies which make the human body into a virtual territory; popular representations of genetics and identity, the diagnostic and medical practices centered around women's bodies, and debates around the practice of 'feminist science studies'.
Wild Science attempts to aim our attention at the visual culture of medicine, exploring the power of popular representations over our expectations in everything from the Visible Human Project to the supposed existence of a 'gay gene' to medical abortion.. The book argues science is an everyday practice bound in values and institutions, and calls for a responsible engagement with the public cultures of science and health.

Any programmer worth their silicon knows that it is wiser to invest time preventing bugs from hatching than to try to exterminate them afterwards. And this is one of the best books for developing a proactive attitude towards electronic entomology. Follow Maguire's advice, and your testers, supervisors and customers will love you. Recommended.
Book Description
"This book has useful things to say and an engaging way of saying them...a worthwhile addition to the shelves of any full-time programmer." - PC Week. Here, from a former Microsoft developer, are super secrets for developing bug-free C programs. Maguire provides examples of how bugs are caught at Microsoft (using actual case histories) and shows how readers can use these proven programming techniques to get products to market faster.
Customer Reviews:
Too old to read, too good to forget.......2007-01-25
I would not read this book now but I'm so sorry the author does not write an updated one! This book really changed the way I wrote code.
One of the books to read -- though not the only one.......2006-10-24
You may not be impressed when you see that this is a Microsoft book. You may get bored at the beginning when all the examples are C and most about memory management. But it's worth persisting and reading onward, because sooner or later, some of the examples will look familiar. Simple concepts about what kind of coding leads to more defects, and what kinds are "solid" or robust.
Maguire is my hero.......2006-04-14
This is hands down, my favorite book on software engineering. If you care at all about writing quality code, you should read this book. The examples are in C, but the concepts (defensive programming, code that detects bugs, etc.) apply to any language. I read this book early in my career, and have re-read it nearly every year since. The used copies are 8 bucks, and the book is worth 10 times that in practical knowledge.
Please ignore previous negative reviews.......2003-11-23
I was shocked to see this book get some negative reviews. Those that blasted Microsoft missed the point. This book provides invaluable advice in a quick read. For example, "If you have to look it up, the code is not obvious," or, "If you find yourself designing a function so that it returns an error, stop and ask yourself whether there's any way you can redfined the function to eliminate the error condition." This is the book that convinced me to single-step all my code. The heuristics on proactive bug prevention, which are summarized in the appendix by the way, will save your team time and let you move on to adding features rather than fighting fires.
Just look at the publishing date........2003-09-23
You are looking at a 10-year-old book with a bunch of green screens on the cover. What more can I say. I bought it in preparation for an interview with Microsoft. I did not find it helpful, except for a few pages that do help understand Microsoft culture (but you can learn much more about that on the net).
So many new things have appeared (and/or became popular) since the book has been published. OOAD, C++, Java, RUP, XP, design patterns, to name a few. It puzzles me that Microsoft still recommends this book.
