      Book Description

Rapid globalization has brought substantial benefits to developing Asia, but it has also heightened the risks associated with policy mistakes, weak financial institutions, and problems in corporate and public governance. The 1997 Asian crisis demonstrated the urgent need to rethink the sequencing and comprehensiveness of financial liberalization. Would further opening of Asia's financial systems be helpful or counterproductive in fostering financial stability? What structural reforms do emerging economies need to undertake to ensure that capital inflows are transformed into productive investment? Which regulatory and other requirements would have to be attached to further financial liberalization? And what role should international organizations and the private sector play in crisis resolution?

This volume provides answers to these questions by discussing the roots of the Asian financial crisis and suggesting several constructive approaches to crisis resolution. It is produced jointly by the Asian Development Bank and OECD Development Centre based on their fourth joint annual Forum on Asian Perspectives.

The thesis of Planet Baywatch is that Baywatch is not a part of culture ... rather, it is culture. To prepare us for the New World Order of Baywatch, the authors tease out the major motifs of David Hasselhof's universe, most importantly that all fat people and those without all-over tans are Evil. Also noted are the bizarre preponderance of midgets, the sad fate that awaits those who answer C. J.'s siren call, and the many subtle variations on the Slow Motion Montage. But don't think that all this heavy hermeneutic analysis precludes discussion of Baywatch's greatest asset: breasts. A whole chapter is dedicated to this unnatural topic. Indeed, one only wishes that there was more text in this slim (128 pages) volume. Many questions are asked and left unanswered, such as is C. J. a cyborg? How flabby does David Hasselhof have to get before he stops appearing shirtless? And why all the midgets?

1 out of 5 stars Humourless "parody" of Classic Show.......1999-10-21

The idea behind "Planet Baywatch", regardless os what anyone else may say here, is to tear apart the show, piece by piece. The main ammunition is that the show is little more than "a flagrant display of tits and ass". The fact that these learned "authors" work for Playboy does put that statement in a different light. Each character is given a personal attack, with all information therefore culled from the first 3 epsidoes of Season 3. One wonders if the authors had actaully watched more than 3 episodes what they might have said..... Anyway, another classic attack is that nobody ever has sex on the show. I agree. I've always hated the way prime-time shows like Bewitched and The Cosby Show never showed hardcore sex during primetime. I could go on spouting off about these smart alec's wondeful witty ignorance, but I think I've given a pretty fair impression with what I've already said. Oh yeah, I truly have learned the paraphrased proverb: Don't buy a book by its cover.....

4 out of 5 stars a great book, with some exceptions.......1998-07-15

its a great book with some exceptions-no michael "newmie" newman, no cast photos, and no episode guides.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the truth about Baywatch.......1996-12-09

I always thought Baywatch was just a bad TV show about lifeguards. But thanks to PLANET BAYWATCH: AN UNOFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER, I've learned just how significant (and believe it or not, even influential) the show really is. Baber and Spitznagel's brilliant satire is an original and irreverent take on the mind-boggling international success of Baywatch. I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I'm not a huge fan of the show, so I was not expecting to appreciate most of the jokes. But despite my Baywatch ignorance, I still found the book to be a hilarious read. After finishing it, I'm starting to share the views of the authors. Baywatch may very well be destined to take over the world. PLANET BAYWATCH is, without a doubt, the humor book of the year

        5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......1996-11-05

A very funny look at the Baywatch phenomena. j

1 out of 5 stars Not In Tune At All!.......2007-05-19

Great for reviewing concepts of theory, disastrous for preparing for the AP Exam.

1 out of 5 stars Expensive, inadequate for the AP; okay for trivial pursuit.......2002-03-15

The AP Music Theory exam is supposed to test your knowledge
of music theory at the level of a first year undergraduate
student. This expensive, thin, and poorly made book is an
almost complete waste of money if you expect to learn any
music theory from it. The College Board does NOT recommend
this book for AP Music Theory. They recommend a book entitled
Music Theory by George Thaddeus Jones. Although this is
certainly not the best book on music theory, it is inexpensive
and a much better starting point.

If you really want to prepare for the exam, why not start
with a basic book like Elementary Rudiments of Music by
Barbara Wharram (be sure to get the answer book too) or
Keyboard Theory if you want a practical start at the piano.

Then move on to *one* of the following books:

Tonal Harmony by Stefan Kotska and Dorothy Payne
published by McGraw-Hill Inc. (My personal favorite.)

Harmony and Voice Leading by Edward Aldwell and
Carl Schachter, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich College
          Publishers.

Only buy Jack Rudman's book if you are interested in
preparing for a television game show or musical
          trivial pursuit.

2 out of 5 stars NOT FOR THE AP.......2000-05-09

This "review book" for the AP music theory exam does a poor job of preparing you for the AP. About only 10% of the what is in the book is tested on the exam. The rest of the book is obscure musical facts, which although is fun to test your musical knowlegde, is not appropriate for the test. The review book which almost totally music history does not help on the AP test which doesn't test music history.

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book, this is bad review book........1999-05-17

The bulk of the questions asked in this book, have no relation to any questions asked on the real AP Music Theory test. The book asks obscure questions such as "Off-Broadway musical hits" and things that don't appear on the AP test at all. Please don't buy the book, doesn't help the test.

          3 out of 5 stars Decent.......1999-02-11

This is a decent book but is rather crudely made and bound. Many of the diagrams are actually hand drawn by someone who apparently does not have much art skill.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable firsthand account of Who's last two seasons.......2003-01-07

If the cover of Sophie Aldred having dealt the Black Dalek with her aluminum bat doesn't convince Who fans that she's the toughest companion since Leela of the Tom Baker era, nothing will. Sophie is well-placed to tell her experiences in Doctor Who, as she was the series' last companion. She came in the wake of a tough transition in Doctor Who's history--following the dismissal of Colin Baker and the installing of Sylvester McCoy, Sophie was chosen to succeed Bonnie Langford as the new companion.

Mike Tucker, her collaborator of this work, was the visual effects designer during Doctor Who's dying days. He too provides his point of view and remembrances with equal aplomb.
In each of her nine stories (Dragonfire, Remembrance Of The Daleks, The Happiness Patrol, Silver Nemesis, The Greatest Show In The Galaxy, Battlefield, Ghost Light, The Curse Of Fenric, and Survival) she provides vivid commentary and detail from her diary of her experiences. There's lots of behind the scenes photographs in B&W and colour, early design sketches, listings of the cast and production team, director, story number, number of episodes and date broadcast--it's pretty comprehensive.

And yes, the famous incident of her while shooting Battlefield is included. Basically, she was in a water-filled tank and was to be pulled up. Sylvester McCoy noticed the glass bulging and then... CRACK! Sylvester shouted for the crew to lift her out, which they did, before anything happened to her. She also tells about this in the More Than 30 Years In The TARDIS video.

Considering how she was one of the few ex-alumni of Who to come out in the More Than... video, it shows how much she loved the show. She was very heartbroken when Sylvester McCoy told her that there wasn't going to be a 27th season, and that too is included in the book.

At the end of the book are photos and text of some of her post-Who efforts, including More Than A Messiah, an episode of the Stranger, the short-lived Colin Baker series, and Shakedown, a Who-spin off that not only featured the return of the troll-like Sontarans but paired her with Carole Ann Ford, Dr. Who's first ever companion. Then there's an interview where she tells what her favourite story was, plus her favourite Doctor. I have to commend her on her answer--she has good taste.

This is a splendid companion-piece after watching any of the 7th-Doctor/Ace stories. If you can find this book--get it. Break through hoardes of Daleks to get this treasure.

5 out of 5 stars So you want to know about the end of an Era?.......2000-03-29

Sophie Aldred was the last companion for the longed lived Doctor Who program. She and special effects wizard Mike Tucker give their thoughts on the last three seasons of the show. The book is filled with pictures from the show and behind the scenes. It also contains quotes from various people including Sylvester McCoy, AKA the Seventh (and final of the series) Doctor. It really is a good read, whether you like Sophie or just like Doctor Who in general. It also contains mainly behind the scenes antics, even the infamous tank scene, where Sylvester became an actual hero.

This really is a perfect companion book to go in any collection.

5 out of 5 stars The 'Ace' Sophie Aldred gives her view on Doctor Who.......1999-03-10

This book has it all; full colour pictures, many from the private collections of Sophie and SFX creator Mike Tucker, the technical working of the show, and witty, genuine commentary from Sophie herself. By reading this book you get a real understanding of how episodes in the Ace era were produced, what the cast and crew thought of them, and what they got up to on set. Sophie is full of information, and you'll want go back and watch all your videos again and go "Ah! i know how they did that!"

                    5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2002-12-09

This book covers eleven information professionals who started their own business and succeeded. Each chapter is dedicated to one person, sporting his or her picture, a short bio, their email address and their URL. The chapters are written in a casual, interview style which is makes it a highly interesting read.
These individuals were asked about their background and how they became interested in the field they are working in. The logistics of starting their own business and the pitfalls were discussed, along with specific questions that pertained to their expertise.

Here are the fields that are covered:

                    Business Research
                    Aviation Expertise
                    Healthcare Industry Monitoring
                    Intellectual Property and Patents
                    Public Records
                    Civic Entrepreneurship
                    Corporate Libaries
                    Canadian Business Information
                    Value-added Research
                    Search Engines
                    On-line Information Gathering

I'll admit that I jumped to the chapter of Lynn Peterson: The Craft of Public Records, as it pertained to my own interests. She began doing background checks on prospective nannies. Today, she has assignments in the legal and corporate fields as well as with private individuals. Her story was inspiring and informative.
The Appendix offers some good sources and websites for research, books, and print media. I'd recommend this book for anyone who is interested in starting their own research business.
