        Book Description

Declining participation in labor unions, the movement toward a service-based economy, and increased globalization have cast doubt on the extent to which welfare states can continue to stem inequality in market economies over the long-term. Does the new economy render existing models of social assistance obsolete? Do traditional welfare states hamper economic and employment growth, thereby worsening the plight of the poor? Lane Kenworthy offers a rigorous empirical analysis of these questions in "Egalitarian Capitalism." The book examines 16 industrialized countries in North America, Western Europe, and Scandinavia—each with different approaches to assisting the poor—to see how successful each has been in developing its economy and curbing inequality over the past twenty years.

Kenworthy finds that inequality grew in almost all of these countries, from the most progressive to the least. Using simple but powerful statistical tests, he assesses the theory that inequality is necessary to improve economic growth and reduce poverty. He finds no necessary trade-off between equality and economic growth but discovers some evidence that high minimum wages dampen employment growth in private sector services. Kenworthy suggests that without greater private sector employment, public supports may be unable to adequately sustain living standards for the poor. An equitable growth strategy necessitates a balance of policy options: Creating jobs is aided by loose employment regulation, low payroll taxes, and, in some cases, lower real wages for workers at the bottom of the income spectrum. However, high employment is also facilitated by a system that "makes work pay" with earnings subsidies, workplace flexibilities, financial support for those who are between jobs or unable to work, and universal health and child care coverage. Kenworthy suggests that these strategies, though generally presented as mutually exclusive, could be effectively combined to create a robust, fair economy.

"Egalitarian Capitalism" addresses fundamental questions of national policy with rigorous scholarship and a clarity that makes it accessible to any reader interested in the alleged trade-off between social equity and market efficiency. The book analyzes the viability of traditional welfare regimes and offers sustainable options that can promote egalitarian societies without hampering economic progress.

          Book Description

This book explains modern macroeconomics. It does not use equations, graphs, diagrams or footnotes. The book is designed to make modern macroeconomics available to those who never had a university course in economics or who had one years ago, now little remembered. The book is non-technical. Since readers are busy, the book is purposely confined to about a hundred pages. It seeks to combat the lack of literacy in basic macroeconomics that is all too evident among Americans. It covers a series of important subjects: resources; national output; living standards; economic growth; employment and unemployment; money and interest rates; inflation; government; deficits and debt; international; productivity; incentives; expectations; income distribution; asset markets; business fluctuations; creative destruction; planning horizons; international convergence; and more.

            Book Description

This volume challenges the view that unemployment is exclusively determined by structural characteristics of the labour market and the social benefit system. Macroeconomic policies and investment in capital stock are included in the analysis and are shown to have a major role to play. Wage setting in the labour market has no direct impact on employment but nominal wages set in this market affect the price level. Following mainstream recommendations with respect to labour market reforms in an environment of low growth and serious effective demand problems, may contribute to deflationary risks. Unemployment and 'structural reforms' also cause falling labour income shares and more unequal personal income distribution. These developments contribute to slow growth and rising unemployment. This is shown in applying growth models, which rely on the principle of effective demand and which also incorporate the effects of distribution struggle.

              Description:
The purpose of this paper is to contribute to literature on energy consumption and economic growth relationship by examining how much of the variance in national income growth can be explained by the growth of different sources of energy consumption and employment in Turkey. We use the recently developed generalized forecast error variance decomposition technique of Koop et al. [J. Econom. 74 (1996) 119] and Pesaran and Shin [Econ. Lett. 58 (1998) 17] to determine the information content of the growth rate of energy consumption. Waste seems to have the largest initial impact, followed by oil. However, over a 3-year horizon lignite appears to explain the largest forecast error variance of GDP. The total energy consumption explains 21% of forecast error variance of GDP. Energy consumption appears to be almost as important as employment in Turkey. Therefore, policy-makers may be interested in identifying the energy dependencies of economic growth in allocating the energy investment budget.

                  Book Description

Clodomir Santos de Morais is to organizational and entrepreneurial literacy what his Brazilian confrere and one time fellow political prisoner, Paulo Freire, is to ordinary literacy. This book introduces for the first time in English the experiences of grassroots development workers who have applied his ideas of the Organization Workshop (OW) and capacitation in highly diverse social settings. De Morais's methods of working with the most marginalized sectors of society are relevant not just to Third World countries, but also to the "economies in transition" of Eastern Europe and the most deprived areas of the industrialized countries.

I am sorry but I am unable to write a review on my recent purchase of the Music Calander for 2006 as I have bought it as a Christmas Present for my son (19yrs old) who is training to be a Secondry School Music Teacher. However given his love and indepth knowledge of all things Musical I can almost gurantee it will be a winner thank you so much

                            Book Description

n each episode of the classic 1960s British TV series, The Prisoner, Number 6 (Patrick McGoohan) tried to escape from the bizarre, hi-tech complex known only as the Village. If only he'd had access to this book! For here, smuggled at great risk from Number 2's Green Dome, are the Top Secret Village plans, blueprints and files. Detailed schematics of Village buildings, devices, vehicles and equipment; cutaway illustrations; Rover attack vectors; hidden camera placements; personnel lists and details of interrogation techniques — it's all here, along with a special file on the Village's most prized prisoner: Number 6.

A brilliantly conceived, beautifully designed book that no Prisoner fan will be able to escape having, this is the ultimate companion to the ultimate cult tv series!

The creator is obviously a sincere and observant fan of the series, and this effort deserved to be better than it turned out. Basically this is a rather thin book of drawings. Plan views of buildings, vehicles, pieces of equipment, signage, and whatever else the author could find. There's very little commentary or text, and there are some problems with what is there. For instance the author describes the large round doors in Number Six's home as being "Rover-friendly" but doesn't explain how Rover would enter through the narrow front door! He also gives credence to the story that the Prisoner is the John Drake character from an earlier series, even though McGoohan denies it.

I was a little surprised at the limited coverage of clothing. It may be that there just isn't enough information out there, but extremely detailed drawings, and perhaps even patterns would be useful for the truly fanatical folks who want to create their own Village-style clothing!

About the only thing in this that made me say "Ah, that's interesting!" was a diagram of the layout of all the different nameplates in front of the masked audience in the Fallout episode. It isn't really useful or vital, but I was curious at all the different groups listed--Anarchists, Old Folks, etc.

I can't recommend it for the money.

5 out of 5 stars The most fun of the Prisoner books.......2003-10-10

This isn't like one of those weird excuses for novels or the episode guides that come out every few years. I've seen the show, what am I going to do with another episode guide?

The Village Files is geared more to the Prisoner fan who goes for the sci-fi aspect. It's kind of a mix between one of those Star Trek guides with all the schematics and a employee handbook for Village warders-- complete diagrams of every building, cave, hidden camera, and car. It has some funny stuff you don't see in other more serious Prisoner books like the top and profile views of Rover, LOL! My wife pointed out THE PAGES ARE NUMBERED LIKE THE FREE INFORMATION BOOTH, TOO!!! :)

I thought it was just going to be a book of pictures when I got it but I keep finding more stuff every time I look through it. I think Patrick McGoohan himself would appreciate the research and humor that went into it. I wish I knew something about doing JKII or Quake mods or Sims skins because it would be perfect for that.

                            3 out of 5 stars Learning PHP.......2007-08-06

The book seems to do an OK job of getting the major points across, but I would have liked to see a clearer progression of information with a separate section for a quick reference. I like the CD with the code available to use. That is a valuable asset for the book.

5 out of 5 stars Works for Macs, too!.......2007-03-06

When it comes to programming, Mac users appear to be at a disadvantage. However, with a little research via the internet, I've been able to take advantage of the programming material that is mostly geared towards Windows. This book is no exception. The most difficult part of the process is getting PHP and MySQL set up and that has nothing to do with this book! A quick search on the internet shows that a lot of people have this problem.
Initially, I thought there were some problems with the code, but I always discovered that is was MY code, not what was written in the book. It's very easy to forget a semi-colon or a bracket or even a period and not see it even after carefully re-checking. (It can help to print it out instead of trying to read it from the screen.) Personally, I think programming can be quite dull, especially for someone who enjoys "design." But, that's part of what makes this book good, it does incorporate design and it uses concepts that are actually fun. I'm still learning, but I'm enjoying the process and I can't wait to start using some of things I've learned on my own website.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best textbooks I've read.......2006-09-15

This book is awesome for someone who is just beginning to learn PHP. Probably the best intro book I've ever read. The examples and concepts are explained very clearly. It is also easy to follow.

I am also a student in the department where Mr. Harris teaches, and I've taken a number of distributed education courses where he is the instructor on the videos. He's a great instructor and has been helpful to me when I've emailed him. If anybody is in the area, I'd highly recommend that you take one of his courses. The videos compliment what he talks about in his books.

                            5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!............2006-09-15

I was a little scared about other people comments, but I decided to buy the book and give a try, thanks God!... I did it,
I have learned so much with this book, if I can give 10 stars I will, hoping the author continue making books like this in a series, excellent work.

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD for the Absolute Beginner.......2006-09-09

This book is an excellent resource for people who have had NO programming experience or very little. For people (like some of the more recent reviewers) who do have programming experience in PHP or other programming languages, I imagine this book would be remedial as it covers basic programming concepts (which are the same in all programming language) like variables, loops, and arrays, in great detail. For the complete Novice, this is excellent. For the experienced, I'm sure this feels like a waste of time--but really--what can you expect from a book that says in its title "For the Absolute Beginner".

As it is titled "For the Absolute Beginner" and IS indeed for that type of person, I have no complaints whatsoever. And the other reviewer who said "The Code is outdated" is incorrect. PHP 5 is currently the latest version of PHP, and this book covers PHP 5. I've yet to have a piece of code not execute from this book (except when I mess up the coding...)

I'd highly recommend this book for a person with no real programming experience. I myself was 'hobbyist' programmer in BASIC fiften years ago...and this was an EXCELLENT book to remind me of all the things I had long forgotten as I delved into writing PHP and using MySQL.

There are TONS of topics and coding that is not covered here, but hey...for absolute beginner...this is THE PLACE TO START. After digesting this book, I would recommend going over to Jason Gilmore's "Beginning PHP 5 & MySQL". I purchased Jason's book first...was utterly lost...and then purchased this one. Now, after understanding these concepts much better, Jason's book makes MUCH more sense...and is a great resource in my PHP library.

This book is not for beginners, and it is absolutely not for "absolute" beginners. It's badly written and jump for one subject to another. It doesn't make sense whatsoever. It introduce tags and codes without any explanation and then they move on to more code using information that was never explained. Don't buy it. Save your money and time.

As always, another book for beginners that makes no sense. If you are like me trying to learn PHP/MySQL it looks like the NET is the way to go. Find tons of tutorials and read them. I only read the first 100+ pages and was not happy. It appears that they DONT KNOW what a beginner is! I'm still looking for a book to get my feet wet, so far I've read the "in easy steps" books from BN, and they were simple to grasp. But not enough.

This has been one of my biggest complaints with books for beginners... Are they really for some one who knows nothing about the subject? Or is it marketing? You make the call. I have complained forever about this! It appears they start out good then lose it, and you are now stuck.

PS This is my first review and I wanted to write it so you can see it really does not help the newbie. Good Luck in your PHP/MySQL learning.

This book has been good for several things- teaching basic code, reusing snippets of scripts- but in Chaper 6- Working with Files, I haven't been able to get the code to work. Loading it from the companion CD, it didn't work off the bat. I went online for support and there is NO errata souce for the book which is really frustrating! I finally figured out the first problem in the code, but now I am stuck again. I like to use the book as a reference to work on a problem at hand, so this book isn't one for that. Also, the code that it suppllies should work without any tweaking needed (or tell you what tweaking needs to be done) and this book isn't one for that either. Therefore, I suggest borrowing the book from a friend or the library before purchasing, or buy it used. It is helpful at points, but en errata source would have made this perfect for me. For an example of a great book/resource on PHP and MySQL, see Larry Ullman's PHP & MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites.

Good, but doesn't help much designing the actual page. I was hoping to learn to make the actual design of a page, but its mostly all about scripts. I like how you do get examples though.
