      Description:
Using a structural model of default, I derive rating characteristics if ratings are meant to look 'through the cycle' as opposed to being based on the borrowers' current condition. The through-the-cycle method, which is employed by most rating agencies, requires a separation of permanent and cyclical components of default risk. In a time series setting, this can be done through the Kalman filter. The analysis shows that several empirical irregularities of agency ratings could be the consequence of such a rating method. The stability of through-the-cycle ratings is relatively high, while their default prediction power is low. Though not predictable in the usual sense, rating changes exhibit properties that call for a reconsideration of the existing evidence.

        Description:
Friedman's plucking model of business fluctuations suggests that output cannot exceed a ceiling level, and it is occasionally plucked downward by recession; output has depth and steepness. This study uses a sample of 12 industrial and emerging economies and finds some evidence that negative shocks are largely transitory, while positive shocks are mostly permanent. In a few cases, as implied by the plucking model, output fluctuations tend to be asymmetric: recessions are transitory, and duration dependent, although expansions are not. There is, however, serial correlation in almost all cases. International evidence on Friedman's plucking model is far from robust.

          Description:
A growing literature has examined the importance of credit-market imperfections for macroeconomic fluctuations, the so-called 'financial accelerator.' A related literature has provided evidence of international and regional comovements in macroeconomic fluctuations. We tie together these strands of the literature in that we investigate the importance of both cross-country and country-specific credit cycles in explaining output fluctuations. Using data for four major economies and two world regions from 1973 to 2001, we find that both regional and country-specific components of indicators of credit availability are powerful in explaining output movements. This research provides the first empirical evidence of a cross-country financial accelerator.

            ASIN: 0792337719

            Book Description

A non-technical introduction to the question of modeling with time-varying parameters, using the beta coefficient from Financial Economics as the main example. After a brief introduction to this coefficient for those not versed in finance, the book presents a number of rather well known tests for constant coefficients and then performs these tests on data from the Stockholm Exchange. The Kalman filter is then introduced and a simple example is used to demonstrate the power of the filter. The filter is then used to estimate the market model with time-varying betas. The book concludes with further examples of how the Kalman filter may be used in estimation models used in analyzing other aspects of finance.
Since both the programs and the data used in the book are available for downloading, the book is especially valuable for students and other researchers interested in learning the art of modeling with time varying coefficients.

              Description:
This work explores an original methodology to specify Gaussian dynamic term structure models and estimate them efficiently from time series data. The emphasis is on the cross-sectional dimension of the problem. The form of the term premium is chosen so as to take into account the recent contributions that provide evidence in favor of time-varying market prices of risk. A model based on a widely used family of forward curves is then estimated from time series of eight UK interest rates. An extensive diagnostic check is carried out to assess the fit of the model.

                Description:
The paper contributes to the literature on integration of stock markets by addressing the issue of non-synchronous trading. We argue that controlling for time differences in trading hours of stock markets is important and show that time-adjustment improves estimates of market integration. We also show that using weekly frequency does not sidestep the consequences of the time-match problem but leads to significant loss of information. We show that the nature of integration of stock exchanges operating in the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland with the stock markets of Germany, UK and US in the period 1994-2004 is very dynamic. Finally, the study shows that the autocorrelation of returns on the main market indices of these emerging markets have declined over time.

                          Book Description

Now researchers can more effectively use the abundant array of data from the annual Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) by utilizing this handy guidebook. Aimed at making this rich data set more accessible, The Panel Study of Income Dynamics describes PSID's topics, study design, research methods, and available data files. It reviews key analysis issues and identifies essential variables for the user. Several detailed analysis examples show how to make use of the PSID to estimate earnings regressions, changes in women's income following divorce, and the correlation between parents' income and a child's adult income, as well as to create a longitudinal poverty measure. This guidebook concludes by giving information on how to obtain PSID documents and the data files themselves. The Panel Study of Income Dynamics is an essential resource for all researchers--particularly those studying income, employment, family, health, wealth, and retirement. "Hill's book provides a cognet and painstaking introduction to a complex base. . . . Hill provides a comprehensive overview of the substantive content of the PSID. . . . The reader will find everything needed to make a decision concerning initial use of the PSID, including the storage size in megabytes (MB) of each available file. . . . By providing a brief yet thorough overview of this complex data set, Hill's book increases the PSID's accessibility. This book is thus a welcome addition to the new series." --Journal of the American Statistical Association "The Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID). . . offers sociologists the type of detailed, longitudinal information that informs today's agenda-setting research on poverty, earnings, employment patterns, and family life-course transitions. The PSID's richness. . . derives from a complex data structure. . . . Hill's guide, the second of a Sage series intended to assist researchers in the use of major social science data bases, extends aid to both the prospective and the experienced PSID analyst. Written in direct, easy-to-read prose, this slim volume provides a concise introduction to the PSID, summarizing special features of the panel's design, content, and data-editing procedures. Readers are informed of the main subtleties involved in applying weights that correct for sample attrition and selection probabilities; though brief, Hill's treatment of this topic helps to demystify a fairly complicated set of rules. Newcomers especially stand to benefit from the description of key filtering variables one must use to exploit the longitudinal possibilities of the data and from a set of helpful summary tables. Old friends of the PSID, along with the just acquainted, will appreciate the instructive examples of cross-sectional analysis, pooled cross-section of time-series regression, and other longitudinal estimation strategies--ones that nicely illustrate certain steps involved in successfully analyzing the data. . . . Hill's handbook is a valuable resource. Researchers preparing to use this data set for the first time can now avail themselves of a compact, well-rounded digest of PSID essentials. Experienced practitioners will welcome the volume as a quick, reliable reference for many details that recurrently affect PSID date management and analysis." --Contemporary Sociology "Martha Hill has done an excellent job with this relatively brief description of an extremely complicated data set. It is clear, reads well, describes the main features and complications of the data, and provides very useful summary tables. It will be a very useful introduction to the PSID for new users at all levels of sophistication; it will also be a useful resource for experienced users, simply because it provides clear answers to the most common problems encountered when using the PSID." --Annemette Sorensen, Harvard University "Dr. Hill's monograph provides a useful overview of a major social science research data base--The Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Succinct, yet comprehensive in its coverage, the monograph will become a useful model for other large-scale social science data bases. Less detailed than technical documentation or a user guide, the monograph is a superb introduction for social scientists to the Survey Research Center's Panel Study of Income Dynamics. The monograph reviews the major issues related to the study--survey design, and content, field procedures, data preparation and data quality. The monograph discusses principal analytic issues related to the study and provides good examples of PSID data analysis for both new and experienced users of these data." --Daniel Kasprzyk, United States Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics

With all the crap in the media that off-handedly makes little girls grow up self-concious and with an inferiority complex, I'm shocked anyone can waste there energy being offended by this journal and the book it relates to. Its a great gift for woman in the dating world to vent in and get her emotions out about a broken heart, or no-luck love life, where a lot of the times we're taught its not ok as women to express anger, this coaxes it out of us in a laughing manner, which I think is very healthy. I'm getting the Boys Are Stupid book for my friend now who was just cheated on by her boyfriend of three years, and she will love every minute of its catalyst effect on expelling her anger. Its obviously not geared towards little boys. It lightens heavy hearts.

                          1 out of 5 stars Repulsive.......2006-01-18

What are we doing to the young men in our culture? In America we have these gross double standards that we put into place. We are teaching our young women to hate boys for no reason. I have two younger brothers which I love dearly and am disgusted that mechandise like this appeals to people. Everyone would freak out if the tables were turned and the target was girls. It is extremely repulsive that we are sending this message to young boys , think about a 5 year old boy who sees this. Thanks for helping his self esteem.

1 out of 5 stars Disgusting is being too kind..............2005-11-17

Cover page: "Boys are Stupid: Throw Rocks at Them"

1st page: "Where Boys Come From: Stupid Factory"

2nd page: "Boys are full of it: fling poop on them"

                          5th page: "Boys are dumb"

My first question is, is this supposed to be funny in some way? It is puerile even by kindergarten standards. Why would someone even publish something so ignorant and hateful, especially if it is targeted toward malleable kids?

Kids learn (heck, we all learn) through repetition. Having such negative thoughts on each and every page cannot be good for any young person. I would make the argument that this book is almost the equivalent of handing a child a pack of cigarettes, for it may not damage their lungs, but certainly has the potential to damage their future relationships.

Any mother who would buy this for their daughter should be ashamed they are not promoting the correct values of equality between the genders. And any woman who would buy this for her own use has personal issues, of which she will need to do her own soul-searching.

Imagine if this journal were reversed and girls were the target! One need not think too hard to hear the uproar it would cause.

There are bad products in the marketplace which should be avoided at all costs....this is one of them.

This is disgusting and sexist. Suggesting that boys lack intelligence and are cranked out of the "Stupid Factory" and should be targets for feces flinging is sickening and cruel. Just think of the hue and cry and uproar if a book like this targeted GIRLS. Boys deserve the same recourse, rights and protection as do ALL people. While there are some who will find the fecal humor and nasty anti-boy comments funny, I think it is sick, sickening and just plain degrading.

                          Book Description

The most influential, enduring, and iconic metal band of the 1980's reveals everything a tell–all of epic proportions.

This unbelievable autobiography explores the rebellious lives of four of the most influential icons in American rock history.

Motley Crue was the voice of a barely pubescent Generation X, the anointed high priests of backward–masking pentagram rock, pioneers of Hollywood glam, and the creators of MTV's first ⯯wer ballad.⟔heir sex lives claimed celebrities from Heather Locklear to Pamela Anderson to Donna D rico. Their scuffles involved everyone from Axl Rose to 2LiveCrew. Their hobbies have included collecting automatic weapons, cultivating long arrest records, pushing the envelope of conceivable drug abuse, and dreaming up backstage antics that would make Ozzy Osbourne blanch with modesty.

Provocatively written and brilliantly designed, this book includes over 100 photos, many never before published, for the most exciting and insightful look ever into the Crue.

5 out of 5 stars Best book I've ever read!!!.......2007-09-30

Art is a piece of work that moves you & this book did. I laughed, I was disgusted, I even cried. This is twenty years of a band strugling though fights, overdoses, suicide attempts, mariages, deaths, prison (it's all here!). I love how the story is told by different people so you can hearing everybody's version of what happened (crazy how everybody remebers things differently). You get to hear what happened behind closed doors & what wasn't in the tabloids. It truly was an awesome read - very hard to put down!

                          5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-18

From page one your are on a journey, as told by each memeber of the band, from the worst part of L.A. and Motley Crue's beginnings, to their rise to super stardom in the world of rock and roll. I was never much of a Crue fan when they were in their prime, but as I got older, I started to like their music and enjoyed reading about their beginning and the typical crazy road that most rock stars take.

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly great book.......2007-09-17

You will wet your pants laughing within the first 5 pages. I am half way through the book and learning alot about the band and Nikki Sixx himself. There is alot people do not know. Can't wait to finish the rest.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, but just a little over-embelished........2007-09-13

This book is a FUN read and I have no doubt that for the most part things went down exactly as described. However I've also read Neil Strauss' other books and while a brilliant writer, he tend to make things larger than life and more polished than they really were (read the Game especially for examples of this.) Some things in the book seem a little too "neatly" described and he glosses over some of the more negative aspects of Motley Crue (And I grew up with them and obsessively followed their press since I was in middle school.)

But definitely a thumbs up. Look forward to reading Nikki's new book for comparison.

While I agree with one of the previous reviewers, that Roddenberry could have chosen a more experienced chronicler, I understand why he did not. Still, despite its shortcommings, Star Trek Creator should be applauded for going beyond what a "Trekkie" would necessarily want to hear to becomming a book about one man's journey into making a living in Hollywood. Offers a different treatment of Star Trek. Contains many documents Roddenberry wrote to promote the idea of ST. Gives interesting insight of Gene's early life with the Los Angeles Police Department and his conversion to TV. There are many ups and downs. I know him better due to this book. ST is the biggest thing in TV, the hottest property, an expansive franchise, and it almost didn't happen at all. Not many TV shows reach from 1966 to beyond our lifetimes. Star Trek will.

5 out of 5 stars Great and enjoyable.......2003-07-12

The other reviewer was overly harsh. This book was a wonderful telling of Gene Rodenburry's life. Was it perfect? No, but I do feel that I have a greater appreciation for the man and his life. I have a much better understanding of what motivated him and his ideas. This book is so cheap that you can't lose.

2 out of 5 stars The usual problems of "authorized" biographies:.......2000-09-24

                                    1) This is a hagiography written by a friend, not an objective biography. Roddenberry's character flaws (and there were many) are barely touched upon or completely glossed over. (The one-sided, multi-page attempt to discredit detractor David Gerrold is embarrassingly silly, for example.)

                                    2) For a book written by someone who was supposedly Robbenberry's friend, precious little of the story comes from the man himself. Nearly half the book (and almost all of the latter sections) consists of transcripts of memos and letters written by Roddenberry.

                                    3) The editing is sloppy; typos abound, most frequently in people's names. Usually they're just annoying, but when you see uncorrected misspellings such as "Harland Ellison" and "Leslie Nielson," you have to wonder just how well the author knew the details of what he was writing about, and whether he was simply parroting material given to him by others.

I'd recommend sticking with Joel Engel's biography of Roddenberry as an antidote. It too has its slant, but it's nonetheless a far more rounded effort than this volume.

5 out of 5 stars This has been my VB bible for the last 4 years.......2003-01-22

I cant tell you how happy I am of owning this book.

I bought it for a class I took at San Josel, CA 4 years ago and up to today it is my number 1 reference for VB programming. I has a complete set of projects scalating from simple to more complex. As you follow each chapter/excercise your VB knowledge becomes more and more solid.

It is also a great reference book (but only if you have been through al the excercises) since it is full of code and tables with imprtant data and concepts. The book is formatted as a cookbook. A step by step tutorial takes you through the chapters while learning in a painless and fun way.
