Book Description

This book presents statistical methods for analysis of the duration of events. The primary focus is on models for single-spell data, events in which individual agents are observed for a single duration. Some attention is also given to multiple-spell data. The first part of the book covers model specification, including both structural and reduced form models and models with and without neglected heterogeneity. The book next deals with likelihood based inference about such models, with sections on full and semiparametric specification. A final section treats graphical and numerical methods of specification testing. This is the first published exposition of current econometric methods for the study of duration data.

      Book Description

This book presents a revisionist view of monetary policy and monetary regimes. It presents several new mechanisms, indicating that money affects long-term production. The consequent policy implications are also discussed, including: the uses of monetary policy and monetary regimes in achieving macroeconomic goals; the impact of an independent central bank; the effects of a movement from floating exchange rates to fixed exchange rates in a monetary union. In addition to the theoretical and policy discussions the book also contains a comprehensive survey of the current state of scholarship in this area.

The prevailing view among economists and policy makers is that money has no impact on production in a longer term characterised by full price and wage flexibility and rational expectations. Designed as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in macroeconomics, labour economics and finance, this book will also appeal to scholars and policy-makers.

From the supplier: The potential of monetary policy to affect the natural rate of unemployment is demonstrated for a disaggregated macroeconomic model in which it takes time for labor markets to eliminate excess supplies resulting from stochastic shocks. The effect of aggregate output variability on the natural rate of unemployment is derived for the system in its stochastic steady-state and illustrative calculations show the possible effects of varying the monetary policy rule. 5 out of 5 stars The Dance Band Era.......2005-09-26

Rather than merely compiling an encyclopedic listing of various dance bands, Leo Walker has wisely chosen to write a history of the dance band era. From its formative years in the early 1920's, to the full blossoming of its style in the 1930's, to its reigning years around WW II, to its ultimate decline in the 1950's (a victim of many forces, including television and the rise of rock 'n' roll), Walker relates the impact of this popular phenomenon on the music world and the culture in general. He also devotes chapters to the recording industry, gigs, movies and other segments of the business. Again the emphasis is on general trends rather than on the specific doings of particular bands. The book opens with the question, "Whatever happened to the big dance band business?" When you get to the end of the book, you should have a very adequate answer.

Tabitha Knight lives a very peculiar life. A child of foster care who has grown into an attractive and ambitious adult, she now finds solace, excitement, and security in the company of rich and famous men whom she dates as a discreet and charming groupie.

Everyone wants to be loved. Tabitha understands that. She shares her gifts with those who seek and, perhaps, need love the mostDmale celebrities. She remains anonymous by changing her name, age, and address as often as she changes the men she dates.

Only a few things remain constant in her life: the continued love and support of her foster sisters in Seattle and the record she keeps of her life in her secret diary.

When a wealthy banker offers Tabitha a huge paycheck to help bring to justice a high-profile celebrity who is known to have sex with underage women, Tabitha finds herself on the wrong side of desperate men, some of whom have more to lose than just their privacy. Those who want the information in her diary to stay secret threaten Tabitha, her sisters, and anyone who comes to know its contents.

Omar Tyree, the New York Times bestselling author, is back with a suspenseful thriller of what happens when a young woman threatens the famous and powerful.

3 out of 5 stars What Happened Mr. Tyree?!.......2007-08-27

I'm giving this book 3 stars, and that is being nice. I have been a fan of Omar Tyree's books every since I read Flyy Girl in high school, and Omar has been consistent with producing great quality books...until this one. The storyline was horrible, the plot was unforgivable, and it just sucked all around. Usually it takes me 1-2 days to read his books because they are so good that I don't want to put it down. It took me 3 weeks to finish this one!!! Come better next time Mr. Tyree!!!

3 out of 5 stars What the heck was this!?.......2006-07-20

I was a big fan of Omar Tyree until I read this book. I had only read one book of his which is Fly Girl and so off the strength of that I purchased this one. Needless to say, I was disappointed. This book was not a bad read it just was not a good read. The diary was so unrealistic and if you ask me, ol' girl brought a lot of pain and drama on herself. I didnt empathize with the characters and the plot wasnt all that. I would not advise anyone to buy this book. If you are a Omar Tyree fan just support him by checking it out of your local library. Save your money so you won't be upset like me.

3 out of 5 stars My Diary Is More Realistic.......2006-06-08

It's not that I did not like the book, but I had to FORCE myself to sit down and get into this book! It started off SO, I mean SOOOO, slow! I was like, please get to it already.

Come to find out that the book took a totally different direction than I thought it would! It was interesting and became a page turner, but it just took entirely too long.

I just finished another one of Omar Tyree's books and it, too, was slow (throughout). I can't bring myself to support him anymore.

If you are looking to catch up on your sleep or you have a hard time getting to sleep at night, buy this book and you'll be counting sheep in no time!

                  1 out of 5 stars WACK!!.......2006-04-21

THIS BOOK WAS NOT WHAT ONE WOULD EXPECT FROM OMAR TYREE. HE NEEDS TO GO BACK TO THE VISION HE HAD WHEN HE WAS WRITING HIS EARLIER NOVELS. HE GOT AWAY WITH THE DIFFERENT WRITING STYLE WITH "LESLIE", BUT THIS ONE IS STRAIGHT TRASH!

2 out of 5 stars Not Quite What I Expected.......2006-01-12

I was kind of disappointed after reading this book. It took me forever to get into it. After about 2 months of trying to read it, I made myself sit down one day and attempt to get into it. It took a while to get going. Once it got going, it was decent. It kept you on edge, but I had been wanting to read the book for so long. So after having high expectations, I was extremely disappointed. Definitely not one of his best.

                  3 out of 5 stars Historical footnote.......2001-12-20

As commented by other reviews this book is rather dated in its wildness athough at the time of its initial release was a a mild shocker. The Boyfriend was in fact Spike Hawkins. "Who had a wife and three children in Edgware". His middle son ended up in the Rock Group 'Big Audio Dynamite' with Mick Jones from The Clash.

2 out of 5 stars Novel based on the true experiences of a '60s groupie.......1998-12-01

This is hardly the best book written by a groupie (those honors, in my opinion, go to Pamela Des Barres' classic "I'm With The Band") but it's not a terrible read either.

"Groupie" may have raised eyebrows in 1969 when it was first published, but there's nothing too shocking in here by today's standards.

The book is based on Jenny Fabian's real experiences as part of London's music scene, and the bands are given aliases to "protect" their identities. (But you can figure out some of the identities based on Jenny's descriptions.)

I was expecting to read about more famous bands in this book, but the only "big names" are Pink Floyd (aka Satin Odyssey), the Jimi Hendrix Experience (aka Jacklin H. Event), and the Animals (aka the Savage). The rest of the bands mentioned in the book had moderate success in England and never really crossed over in a big way in the U.S. or much of the rest of the world.

The '60s counterculture lingo in the book is somewhat hilarious ("groovy" and "scene" are two favorite words), but much of Jenny's story goes downhill after she describes "pulling" (having sex with) a musician she calls "Ben," who's obviously Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd.

After telling that story, the reader has to wade through too many chapters describing Jenny's slide into an emotionally abusive relationship with the manager of a local band. Jenny also dates other men from the local music scene, but the relationships ultimately end up nowhere.

The book ends on a disappointing note, leaving the reader wondering if the '60s really were as much fun as Jenny would like us to believe.

5 out of 5 stars a fast-paced groovy rock text for any serious groupie chick.......1997-10-10

"Having a scene", getting high on "tincture" and "plating", it's all there in the story of Katie, a groovy 19 year old, living in swinging London in 1969. It's based on true facts and you can play a guessing game with who Katie's conquests really are from all the happening English bands of these times. It's fun, risque for having been written in the late 1960's, but always serious, as Katie searches for the ultimate scene... Read it! As they say "the only place for chicks in rock and roll is in the back of the van"!!

Perhaps when a museum dedicates a three-month exhibit to the subject of soap operas, it's time to hang up our cultural hats and admit that we now occupy a world of overstimulated philistines. With that confession happily concluded, what could we want more than this gorgeous volume documenting the Museum of Television & Radio's soap opera show. Exhaustively chronicling the life of the soap opera, Worlds Without End covers the form from its roots in radio up to the late '90s. It not only reviews the histories of every soap series ever to air (up through late 1996), but also provides a general historical overview of the changes in subject matter, racial casting, and filming styles of the genre as a whole.

A beautifully illustrated book with plenty of information on the history of soaps, this book may be as interesting to sociologists as it is to soap fans. Most noteworthy, is the way it differentiates the soaps from one another in terms of issues that each tackles and why. It is interesting to trace how soaps such as "Painted Dreams" began on radio and what appealed (and didn't) to various audiences throughout the decades. Eg: Isn't it hard to believe that "Guiding Light" (On Cable In Sydney) was orginally a 15 minute radio serial about four ministers? Many soaps mentioned in the book will probably be unknown to younger Sydney audiences such as "Search For Tommorrow" and "As The World Turns" which haven't been on the air for years (decades?) but there is good coverage on todays lineup as well. If you like this book you may want to check out A book by Jean Rouverol called"Writing For The Soaps" (1984) and "Soapbox" (1990) Hopefully a television special of a similar nature to this book could be done because the archive material itself would be priceless viewing.

                    Book Description

This book is based on the very latest version of Oracle's fully J2EE-certified Application Server (previously called Oracle9iAS). Oracle Corp. is aggressively attacking this market with a new lost-cost version of the server and a program to move BEA customers onto Oracle free of charge (see http://theregister.co.uk/content/53/30031.html). Adoption interest is growing rapidly amidst favorable reports regarding performance and reliability.

Deploying J2EE applications and configuring the application server are known to be the most tricky and non-standard elements of J2EE development, and thus they receive scant attention in general J2EE texts. This book provides a focused, no-frills guide to getting J2EE applications up and running on 10G. It covers Oracle's J2EE container, OC4J (available for free for development purposes), in full detail and then moves on to explain how to configure and use the various enterprise-level features that come with the commercial editions.

5 out of 5 stars Good application developer view with Oracle App Server.......2005-10-31

Great coverage of the Oracle 10g Application server from more of a developer perspective than that of a DBA. With this book and the other text you have complete coverage of this complex technology.

4 out of 5 stars Oracle Java apps step-by-step.......2004-11-11

This is a step-by-step walkthrough of Oracle App Server programming. It goes from application architecture basics through twenty-one chapters on using various APIs and services (with one on installation) to end on clustering and failover. Graphics are used quite heavily, often showing page by page use of various Wizards.

Where the book excels is in it's explanation of the various XML descriptor standards required to register web services, or message queues, or various other system services. Often these things are opaque mojo and the author demystifies these files and shows exactly where modifications need to be made.

The code samples are relatively short, just enough to flesh out the topic.

This is more a field guide than an indefensible reference work. The chapters are too brief and the coverage too scanty to be an in-depth treatise on any one topic. As long as you understand this you won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars No Oracle lock in .......2004-10-09

The 10g is Oracle's answer to IBM's WebSphere and JBoss. Wessler certainly wastes no time in delineating how you can use 10g to develope J2EE applications. There are some mundane chapters on installing and configuring it. Important, granted. But the crux of the book is the chapters on making and deploying web applications, EJBs and Web Services within 10g. If you look here, 10g seems to allow for any standard J2EE application to run within it.

Crucially, suppose you commit to designing and developing one of these applications, to use 10g to hook to an Oracle database. Then your code can be largely independent of that database and 10g. In principle, you can migrate it to another J2EE compliant container, over a different database, and have only minimal changes. Realistically, your code under 10g will have all sorts of little Oracle dependencies. But this book suggests that with careful design, you can safely use 10g and still preserve a migration option. No Oracle lock in.

I am an administrator for a large corporation migrating from SQL Server to Oracle. Our Oracle DBA loved this book so much he stole it from me!

In passing, he told me what great books Apress had and would actually pay me for my copy! So, why am I here? This book is so good, even an Oracle DBA would steal it just to read it!
