THE Reference.......2005-02-04
The book represents the best reference for "distributions oriented" verification of probabilistic forecasts. Developed and described in the context of meteorological forecasts, the DO paradigm is robust, and has ubiquitous applications, when one recognizes that EVERY forecast is inherently based on a conditional probability distribution.
The focus on meteorological forecasts does not make applications in other disciplines transparent, in a tutorial way, but anyone who thinks rigorously about the "quality" of forecasts will make the connection. An essential, and universal concept demonstrated from meteorology is the realization of "quality-value reversals" in which forecasts with higher "quality" (quantified by traditional error measures such as correlation or RMS error) have lower "value" in terms of net benefit of the forecast when used in a specific decision making context. This fundamental concept is well extablished in other fields with high-stakes forecast-based decisions (, e.g. medical decision making) and should be fundamental to any development/evaluation of forecasts (meteorologiical or otherwise).

It's very basic for digital DJ. Which is suitable for a absolute biginner.
This book could have more of technics on the beat mixing rather than scatching technics.

Title not at all what it seems.......2007-04-16
This book, in my opinion is mistitled. I bought it hoping to gain some insight and knowledge into digital music mixing and that is what the other reviewer, as well as the title of the book promised. First off, only cd mixing is even mentioned and the book does an ok job describing this. Laptop mixing software and other formats besides cd, which are growing more prevalent in music mixing are nowhere to be found. I did not get what I was hoping to from this title. Secondly, this title seems to be more geared towards a scratch dj than a digital dj. Thirdly, the title is in an 'ultimate beginner series' but doesn't even give you any pointers on selecting the proper gear, hooking it up, or powering on properly, which are all things that seem to me to be very important to an ultimate beginner. The one saving grace if this title is the 2 identical discs that come with it which allow you to learn the techniques mentioned within firsthand, and along with the book. Lastly, I would suggest 'How to DJ Right: the art and science of playing records' over this title. It is less expensive in price, covers everything that this title covers and many more things that this one doesnt, goes more in depth and also provides you with other resources and avenues to expand on what you learned from the book.

This book does a very good job of teaching digital dj basics, while giving you a basic concept of traditional djing. Exceptional value for the price.

Not only does he teach you how to do what DJs must do now in order to sound and look fresh on the dancefloor, there are also multiple tips to becoming a Disc Jockey Superstar. My hat is off to you, Mr. Kriel.

Excellent practical guide to IDL.......2003-02-06
If you're like me, you've probably been confused at times by the semantics of IDL. I've been using IDL for several years now and I still run into obstacles every now and then. What I needed was a book that went through the basics first (like a C or Fortran book) and then covered the really practical stuff like plotting, imaging, saving output etc. Liam Gumley has done a great job here in showing the reader how to put IDL to work. I also own Dave Fanning's book, and the two books complement each other nicely. However I'd have to give the edge to Practical IDL Programming for it's clear and straightforward explanation of IDL fundamentals, and for very clear and well explained example programs, many of which I now use every day.
