Book Description
A long-standing unsolved problem in economic theory is how economic equilibria are attained. Price Dynamics in Equilibrium Models: The Search for Equilibrium and the Emergence of Endogenous Fluctuations considers a number of adjustment processes in different economic models and investigates their dynamical behaviour. Two important themes arising in this context are `bounded rationality' and `nonlinear dynamics'. Important sub-themes of the book are the following: how do boundedly rational agents interact with their environment and does this interaction in some sense lead to rational outcomes (which may or may not correspond to equilibria)? The second sub-theme deals with the consequences of the nonlinear dynamical nature of many adjustment processes. The results presented in this volume indicate that endogenous fluctuations are the rule rather than the exception in the search for equilibrium. The book uses the theory of nonlinear dynamics to analyze the dynamics of the different economic models. Due to the complexity of most of the models, an important role is played by computational methods. In particular, at regular instances the models are analyzed by numerical simulations and some computer-assisted proofs are provided. It also covers a wide range of dynamical models from economic theory. Most of these models merge the theory of nonlinear economic dynamics with the theory of bounded rationality. The book is written for anyone with an interest in economic theory in general and bounded rationality and endogenous fluctuations in particular. It is entirely self-contained and accessible to readers with only a limited knowledge of economic theory.

Excellent!.......2001-03-02
Jan is a heavy weight among economists. As soon as you start reading it, you can't lay it down, and like M&M's you feel sorry when its finished: it's never enough. His writing style is clear and fresh, like a can of coca cola.

Book Description
These thirteen papers and accompanying commentaries are the first fruits of an ongoing research project that has concentrated on developing simulation models that incorporate the behavioral responses of individuals and businesses to alternative tax rules and rates and on expanding computational general equilibrium models that analyze the long-run effects of changes on the economy as a whole.
The principal focus of the project has been on the microsimulation of individual behavior. Thus, this volume includes studies of individual responses to an over reduction in tax rates and to changes in the highest tax rates; a study of alternative tax treatments of the family; and studies of such specific aspects of household behavior as tax treatment of home ownership, charitable contributions, and individual saving behavior. Microsimulation techniques are also used to estimate the effects of alternative policies on the long-run financial status of the social security program and to examine the effects of alternative tax rules on corporate investment and of foreign-source income on overseas investment.
The papers devoted to the development of general equilibrium simulation models to include an examination of the implications of international trade and capital flows, a study of the effects of capital taxation that uses a closed economy equilibrium model, and an examination of the effect of switching to an inflation-indexed tax system. In the volume's final paper, a life-cycle model in which individuals maximize lifetime utility subject to a lifetime budget constraint is used to simulate the effects of tax rules on personal savings.

"Tell me another one, just like the other one, tell me another one,dooo...".......2006-01-23
With this little gem sitting on your shelf, you'll never have to say,"Oh,I just can't remember jokes".
Jeff Rovin comes to your rescue with a joke about any subject you can imagine. Not only does he give us 1001 jokes ,he covers the gamut ,so if you're looking for something suitable for or about the school,or one for or about the guys at the bar;you'll find one here.He also has come up with a novel method of showing where jokes can be found of a similar theme in the book.
Just to prove the point,a couple of my favorite things are birds,Rubik's Cubes and books,so here goes;
"Mary walked into the pet store and, after looking up and down the aisles, asked the proprietor for help.
'I'd like a box of birdseed,'said the lady.
'For what kind of bird?'he asked helpfully.
'Oh,I dunno,'the strange woman replied,
'Whichever will grow the fastest'.
"Q: What goes,Click,click,click click,did I get it?
Click,click,click,click,did I get it?
A: A blind person playing with Rubik's Cube."
"I don't know," the world- famous novelist said to his
editor."I just don't think my newer books are as good as
my earlier works."
"Rubbish," the understanding editor replied,"your writing
is the same as it ever was,It's your taste that's
improved."
Now if puns are your thing,he's got them too;
"Then there was the Happy Trails Recreation Camp, which
posted this sign after Labor Day:
'Clothed for the Winter'"
Now don't get the idea all the jokes are as corny as these,
for the really sizzling ones, you'll have to check out the
book. The book has 351 pages and half of them wouldn't pass the
Amazon Litmus Test.If you really want to have some fun;put a
cover on the book, read it and laugh as you travel on the
bus,train or plane.It's particularly helpful if you're
looking for a little exra elbow room.

Nice To Glance Through.......2001-03-11
1001 Jokes are alot to look at. None the less on a quiet evening one can find a slight majority of them fairly amusing. Its a little intimidating to read all in sequence. None the less, the book is organized by subject matter so the reader can easily glance thru the sections of his or her choice. The varying lengths of each joke help the overall presentation.

Book Description
Can you possibly remember just how many great email jokes you deleted back in the late 1990's and early 2000's? Oh, sure, there were probably lots of great jokes, but most of them more than likely carried spam, viruses, advertisements or other devious ways to get your name into a database for sale to solicitors. So "DELETE" was the only viable option.
Thankfully, someone actually isolated and saved these jokes for a rainy day, and using updated virus software went through each and every one, selecting only the very best (and most hilarious), reformatting and getting rid of all the weird stuff those primitive email systems used to contain (surely you remember those >>>'s and ***'s (etcetera, etcetera) that seemed to be in front of every sentence of the page?
Well, now you can relax. These classic rib-ticklers are not only virus free, they are great fun and easy to read. You will be able to pick this book up whenever you are down in the dumps (or just taking one) and laugh yourself silly whenever you like.
Caution, if used as a bathroom reader, be prepared to explain what on earth was so funny while you were alone in the can by your self in complete and wild hysterics! (Now that should be funny all by itself)
These are the best, the funniest, and the most overlooked jokes in the world. Never be at a loss again for a way to put a smile on friend's faces. Laughter, after all, is truly, the best medicine.
If you're going through life grumpy you're going to get wrinkles. Isn't it better to have LAUGH wrinkles instead of FROWN wrinkles?
So enjoy, and pass it on so you can make someone else happy.
Better yet, tell them to get their own copy!

Powerful insights into the artistic culture of the 20th Cent.......2004-04-09
This is a unique and important book. It provides a comprehensive overview of art music in the twentieth century; a topic that is not given the attention it deserves. Mr. Watkins demonstrates a unique breadth of knowledge of the music of the last hundred plus years and he also posseses a rare depth of insight into the wonderfully rich flowering of musical styles and the connection of those styles to the larger artistic culture in painting, sculpture, literature, poetry, theatre, and dance.
This book is so rich in explanation and insight that it is impossible to take in all it has to offer in a single front to back reading. It is one of those texts that rewards deep and repeated study. You will want to return not only for its texts, musical examples, and images, but also for its rich notes and references.
The book opens by giving us wonderful background in the cultural movements in Vienna and Paris from 1885 through the first year of the First World War. The next two parts lay out the way new movements and views arose in Europe from 1909-1930. The next two sections brilliantly demonstrate the rise and aims of national movements and the way the first and second world wars caused artists to create works aiming beyond nationalism. Serialism and the search for new sounds are the subjects of the next two sections. The book closes with a survey of the art music of the late twentieth century including its movements in synthesizing earlier composers into new musical movements and the way classic forms were re-used and re-interpreted.
Mr. Watkins tells us these great stories by providing wonderful readings of aptly chosen works that connect and illuminate all these movements. It isn't a continuous narrative of one thing after another. Instead, we get the benefit of seeing great works up close and in their proper cultural context. For me, one of the great benefits of this book was the way it opened up the connections between painting, sculpture, and literature to the music of this period. I had studied that for the Baroque, Classic, and Romantic periods, but had not been given that insight into the twentieth century. And this book does it better than anything I have seen for those previous centuries. Reading this book was an electric experience for me. It is just so intensely packed with insight and revelation. At least it was for me.
Revised Edition.......2002-07-18
The initial printing, with the described editing problems, was corrected almost a decade ago. Readers are encouraged to see the result for themselves. The book has been widely and successfully adopted as a text throughout the United States.
Concise but confusing.......1999-09-17
Soundings is a good book with a great many examples and a great deal of information, but the format often leaves the reader in quite a quandry, as the author titles a chapter "Alan Berg Before Wozzeck," and the reader expects such. Then the author goes on to talk about Berg, but keeps referring back to Webern and Mahler and Schoenberg, and the reader at many points is left wondering exactly who this piece of music and that particular quote is by. Once again, much information in a format lacking in organization.
Quite good before 1945, but really needs editing.......1997-10-23
Watkins seems to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the first half ot the twentieth century, and does a very good job of encapsulating stylistic trends. However, his examples sometimes do not support his conclusions, although they seem sound. Often, a few logical steps seem to be left out. Finally, this book is marred by shoddy editing. Figures do not match the text, there are factual errors, and the reader is constantly being refered to "pp. 000-000".

Book Description
The ideal of a neutral, objective press has proven in recent years to be just that—an ideal. In Governing with the News, Timothy E. Cook goes far beyond the single claim that the press is not impartial to argue that the news media are in fact a political institution integral to the day-to-day operations of our government. This updated edition includes a new afterword by the author, which pays close attention to two key developments in the twenty-first century: the accelerating fragmentation of the mass media and the continuing decline of Americans' confidence in the press.
"Provocative and often wise. . . . Cook, who has a complex understanding of the relationship between governing and the news, provides a fascinating account of the origins of this complicity."—James Bennet, Washington Monthly
"[Governing with the News] addresses central issues of media impact and power in fresh, illuminating ways. . . . Cook mines a wealth of historical and organizational literature to assert that the news media are a distinct political
institution in our democratic system."—Robert Schmuhl, Commonweal
Customer Reviews:
the media as fourth branch of govt.......2002-04-23
There are plenty of books about political coverage, and how it's too focused on personalities and sound bites and winners and losers. This book takes the next step: how politics and government are affected by the way news is reported today. One of his main points is that the media has become an influential political institution in its own right, not just an observer but a fourth branch of government. Also, politics and policy are run in part as publicity campaigns, which affects how the country is run.
It's somewhat academic reading, with lots of footnotes on studies cited... but at least you feel he has done his homework. I found most interesting the less-academic aspects, like the inside baseball of the cat-and-mouse between the press and politicians: the techniques politicians use to get better coverage, to spin, to set the agenda and frame the debate, and to advance their policies... and the bargaining, the tricks, and the compromises journalists use to get the inside dope.
Work of savvy scholar - relevant to all of us........2000-10-14
Sheds light on the news media as a political institution. Cook's wisdom helps us make sense of the role media plays in governing our nation.

Simply practical!.......2003-09-16
The form like Nokia expose their innovations, the form so simple of attracting the reader the simplicity of their designs makes of this book of necessary utility to understand the reasons for which the cellular telephony will dominate and it will be imposed in the short term market.
Great information.......2003-08-05
There is not much literature in the area of mobile user interface design. This book is not written completely by Christian Lindholm and Turkka Keinonen, though; this book has several authors from Nokia.
It is an exciting and good-looking book on the history and background of the extremely successful Nokia mobile phone design. It is very down-to-earth and visionary at the same time.
If you work in the area of user interface design for mobile devices, this is a must-read. There are many new ideas in this book and I learnt much from it.
