Peter Albin is known for his seminal work in applying the concepts of adaptive dynamical systems, first developed by biologists and physicists, to the study of economic systems. This book is a collection of his pathbreaking articles on the application of cellular automata and complexity theory to economic problems. Duncan Foley provides a thoughtful introduction in which he reviews the disparate analytical sources of Albin's work in the theories of nonlinear dynamical systems, economic dynamics, cellular automata, linguistic and computational complexity, and bounded rationality.

Albin has analyzed economic systems as interactions of highly complex components (i.e., intelligent human beings). He uses the theories of generative linguistics and cellular automata to establish that the complexity level of economic systems is, in principle at least, that of a Turing machine or general-purpose computer, establishing that classic economic approaches to the problems of household and firm choice, macroeconomic prediction, and policy evaluation may give rise to undecidable propositions and uncomputable functions. He develops simple models of dynamic economic interaction based on cellular automata which illustrate the inherent complexity of economic interactions and the resulting challenge they pose to traditional theories of rational economic behavior. These models explore the dynamics of the business cycle, decentralized market trading, and the emergence of cooperation in a novel local-interaction version of the repeated prisoners' dilemma game. Albin's work provides a unique and important perspective on economic systems.

Women on their nerves are world wide.......2007-02-16

Excellent book. The more honest book about psycology of women ever. I got it from a female friend, women enjoy it, but men will enjoy and learn from it.

From the book I learned and confirmed so much about being in a relationship with a woman (Mother, girlfriend, syster, daughter, wife, coworker). This book reflects in a humorous, concise and graphical way, the daily and simple adventures of modern women, while getting bottom line without offending anybody.

This book would prevent many problems between couples beforehand. Maitena goes deep into the reality of every possible serious situation from dating to parenting with the magic of creating laughs as eventually you will get yourself in it ( and hopefully safe out of it).

Maitena the argentinian female writer is a master of words and painting. I hope the english translation be ready soon.

a very well written book about yes' history by Chris Welch..if you wanna know about the history of this great band as well as little details that even some of the biggest yes fans may not know get this book you wont be dissapointed.

Close to the edge...meh.......2004-06-26

this is a great story about yes. its full of alot of details and it can be intersting at one pont and then funny at another. the problem i have with this book is that chris welch, the author, didnt write this book so good. its hard to understand it because there are barely any commas so you have to keep reading lines twice in this book a lot. I do suggest this book though for the story although it mighht be hard to understand at some times.

MOUNTAINS COME OUT OF THE SKY AND THEY STAND THERE.......2003-02-27

My favorite progressive rock band from the 1970s as money grubbing spoiled rock stars? Yes? No! The author certainly loves the band but reveals them as quite human after all, blowing the lid off the Yes mystique of cosmic peace and mind altering exploration, as they scramble to keep pace with changing public musical tastes and advancing middle age. Even after reading "Close To The Edge, The Story of Yes", the band members remain as strangers coming across as mere participants in the great machine called Yes, and as less than mature men who blame all their troubles on everyone but themselves. The author's narrative rolls along serving Yes information, however tedious to the unadorned, in an enjoyable way until the end when he suddenly dropa out of sight allowing the concluding chapter to serve as a promotion for the band's new album. One wonders if the band's participation for the book was dependent on that promotion.

As a major Yes fan for over 25 years, I've often thought I knew everything there was to know about the band. Well, Chris Welch taught me a few things. His linear approach and comfortable style of writing made the book very hard to put down. I was enthralled by his descriptions of recording sessions; tours; member resignations; firings; and even how much they got paid for each gig in the early days. He delves into each member's personality and you get a feeling for how the members made the band more than a product of the sum of their individual efforts. If there's even just a single biographical book you buy this year, make it this one.

Dissapointing.......2001-10-22

30 years ago Chris Welch was, through my formative musical years, one of the rock journalists I looked up to! But now, 30 years on and looking back, I found this biography more consistent with my adolescent literary needs of 30 years ago! While containing many facts, it also has much irrelevant nonsense and somewhat twee statements most annoyingly followed by exclamation marks (about one per page)! So much so that I got tired of the 6th form style of writing very quickly! E.g. P41 on the longevity of the band "...but here we are, still going thirty years later!". P42 on meeting other members "Within a week I had met Chris!". On P43, on early photos, "They would now be of great historical value - if Chris hadn't lost the lot!" On P43 again, on Jon Anderson's autocracy "Everyone was entitled to HIS opinion. That's the best way of putting it!". Note the tiresome and repetetive exclamation marks! Are these supposed convey Wow!? Amazing!? Oh Dear!? Oh Christ!? Or what!? Whatever the intention it becomes annoying very quickly and the text ends up reading like a fan club member's essay full of some kind of mock astonishment, conveyed by endless exclamation marks! There are better Yes books around! (Annoying exclamation marks there to illustrate a point).

I awaited this book with much anticipation...and after reading it i felt like i needed a bath. It clearly shows what a minupulating person Paula Yates was. To have to sit and read the most intimate details of their relationship was to much, and with Paulas track record of lying, whats to say that any of this stuff was true. This book truly tarnishes the memory of Michael Hutchence, i wish i had never read it and i feel bad for Michaels family to have this trash out there. Unfortunately when you live your life in the public eye and you are no longer around to defend yourself, this is what happens...dont waste your money.

It was very interesting to me as a Michael Hutchence and INXS fan. It helps to understand what was going on in their lives and right up to the very end. It is so sad that Michael is no longer here and what a waste of a good musician/singer. I highly recommend the book, it was a great read.

This book was very helpful to solve my interoperability problems w/o building crazy wrapper code. I had two huge issues, I was struggling to build an XML web services bridge channel between my j2ee application and microsoft C# application. I had several issues with encodings and XML content issues. I had integration problems with couple of j2ee applications with VB app. This book helped me to solve them.
This book is perfect balance for understanding all microsoft <-> j2ee integration specific concepts and code guidance. Simon guest done terrific job explaining the concepts with good level of details to support both from j2ee and .net perspectives. The author has so much grip and clarity on the subject, makes it so simple for understanding and illustrations and very clear to read. A must have for java and .net developers.

Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt is what J2 enthusiasts cling to when discussing .NET technologies. Simon cuts through these biases with concise, helpful guidance of how to interoperate. IBM and Microsoft both have committed to interoperability and Mr. Guest's book shows how that has real-world applicability. Clear and comprehensive, with plenty of examples........2004-04-30

This book is a godsend for anyone who wants to learn how to successfully integrate .NET and J2EE software systems. Simon's writing style is clear and engaging, the book is well structured, and there are copious examples which provide concrete examples of each aspect of .NET/J2EE integration. One of the book's distinguishing features is that it covers a wide range of scenarios, such as XML data interchange, web services interoperability, messaging with MSMQ and the integrating with the presentation tier. The book ships with several useful third party Java products on a CD that allow the reader to immediately try out the code samples. Highly recommended!

A Necessary Resource.......2004-03-21

It's an essential resource for any architect or developer who is involved in integrating the two platforms, J2EE and .Net, with enough breadth and depth in both being a technical reference as well as offering practical examples and solutions. The samples are working applications that can quickly jumpstart design and development, providing enough understanding and is presented in a clear concise manner.

It has helped us resolve some rather complex interoperable challenges that we've had with some of our customer applications, and saved us an immense amount of time and resource in research.

Required reading for the modern Enterprise Developer!.......2003-11-21

Today's Enterprises are heterogenous environments that make writing reliable efficient applications a nightmare at the best of times. This book gives the modern developer the tools and strategies necessary to successfully build and deploy heterogenous applications in today's Enterprises.

It is nice to see that readers are offered many different strategies for interop including both webservices and binary.
