Customer Reviews:
The Atlas offers a pragmatic snapshot of the world.......2005-12-01
Traveling through the world as I do ( I work with a humanitarian medical organization) I am always on the lookout for information that can provide me with a better understanding of our shrinking world. The World Bank Atlas does just that. The data used is from 2003/2004 sources and vividly parses the world socially (including health), economically, and environmentally. All of the fifty, 11x8.5" pages have excellent color maps and graphics.
If anything, the Atlas packs in too much, in too few pages. Thus, there are concepts that beg a fuller explanation. The Atlas would be greatly improved if it included website references that corresponded with the maps, tables and graphs. For example, "A Thirsty Planet Gets Thirstier", and its maps on world water use, could be used as a launching point to gather more information via the web if the Atlas offered a few, select website addresses; maybe in the next edition.
The Atlas offers a pragmatic snapshot of the growing imbalances in the world. To think that in a span of fifteen years, 2000-2015, humanity will have added another billion people to our globe (7 billion) is more than provocative. Sadly, in our world, the 80/20 rule still applies: 80% of the population struggle to live on 20% of the world's GDP. This atlas is a "must have" for anyone that is seriously engaged in understanding and working towards the well being of our growing planet. Strongly recommended.. 4 stars.

Book Description
The debate about the expansion of the regional integration of Europe is set to dominate the European Union's (EU's) policy agenda in the coming years. While the countries of Central and Eastern Europe may aspire to EU membership only in the long term, four EFTA countries have already submitted formal applications, and are aiming for membership by the mid-1990s. This book, from the Centre for Economic Policy Research, addresses this imminent expansion, focusing on the "Northern Expansion" of Scandinavian countries, and on Austria. The volume has chapters on the key issues in the debate, including the theoretical motivation behind the clamor for entry to the EU, the political implication of expansion for the EU, and the effects on trade and production patterns across the whole of industry for new members.

Book Description
For the unprepared visitor, Irish conversation can be a minefield. This guide covers the opening lines, closing remarks, topics to avoid, curses to use, and ways to add color to conversation when traveling to the Emerald Isle. A simple question like "You're not from around here are ye?" requires a detailed reply. In order not to be thought rude, visitors to Ireland should supply the details of where they live and why they are in Ireland. To really be accepted, they might add their salary, marital status, and daily eating habits. Included are tips for practical situations in pubs and shops and at Irish sporting events, christenings, weddings, and funerals.

Book Description
She has been called "one of the most richly idiomatic female pop singers of her generation" by Rolling Stone magazine. Translation: Jewel speaks to millions of fans of all ages through her award-winning music and bestselling poetry books.
Now, get to know this supertalented performer for the down-to-earth, savvy, and unpretentious person she is -- a dynamic young woman who, her friends all agree, is "too normal to be a rock star." Revealing Jewel pieces together a remarkable portrait, through the words of those who know her best: her family and close friends, her band, and her colleagues on the road, in the studio, and on the movie set -- including Moby, producer Arif Mardin, actor/director Billy Bob Thornton, Jewel's father, singer/ songwriter Atz Kilcher, and her mother and manager, Lenedra J. Carroll. This one-of-a-kind compilation gets up close and personal on:
Jewel's childhood...the hard times...her rise to fame...paying her dues...the recording experience...the touring life...superstardom...artistic pursuits...her passions...her causes...her friendships...her love life...her personal style...her sharp wit and hard-won wisdom.
Also included are trivia questions, candid photos, and sidebars in Jewel's own words. Delve into Revealing Jewel and celebrate the heart and soul of an artist who constantly challenges our assumptions and defies our expectations.
Customer Reviews:
an interesting little book.......2003-12-19
This is an interesting little book. I'll admit it is only for the fans, and the hardcore fans at that (those like me, who might have a little obssession for Jewel). The book isn't even written by her. What it is is various remarks made by those who know Jewel. Nothing great, but it has a great cover photo.
Good for fans.......2003-06-09
Yes, I know I just gave this book 3 stars, but despite the rating, I like this book and I enjoyed reading it. It's not a personal book, though, so don't expect a biography or memoir.
This book is set up in a "did you know?" fashion. Let me explain. This book is 90% a compilation of quotes and commentary from the people who know Jewel personally. The other 10% comprises of responses from Jewel to various questions (i.e., "What were your worst performance experiences?") This is why I say it's more of a "Did you know?" foundation under this book. It's full of insights and facts we never knew about her. This is a book about what the people who surround Jewel think and know of her.
You really have to have an interest in not just Jewel's music, but Jewel herself to appreciate this book. That's why I rated this item 4 stars instead of 5 because of its limited appeal. I am a long-time Jewel fan, so I loved this book. It's too bad, though, that non-Jewel fans probably won't be attracted to this book, because it reveals so much about her character that fans have known for a while, but the public is oblivious to. For instance, Moby talks about how she has the most twisted, blackest sense of humor, and how contrary to popular belief, she'd fit in with the kids in South Park perfectly. He also mentions that Jewel's told him the most disgusting jokes he's ever heard and has the mouth of a sailor that "would make Eminem blush." (I have to admit that I was giggling all throughout Moby's commentary.) Another bandmate admits that "[he has] sarcasm coming out of [his] pores, but she's worse." Another roadie comments, "Jewel hawks the biggest loogies."
Plenty of attention is given to the side of Jewel's personality the public is familiar with, though, such as her honesty, integrity, and kindness.
What impressed me the most about this book is how more attention was given to her "boyishness." After reading this, you see that she's definitely NOT the simpering, wilting flower so many people believe her to be. In fact, most her friends are amazed that she hasn't been butchered by the media for her jokes (which can easily come across as offensive by those easily offended by direct sarcasm, and many, many people are).
I'm not going to say non-fans are going to be interested in this book, because that really depends on how they feel about Jewel. If you're a fan or just someone wanting to understand the woman who is Jewel better, then this is the book for you.
I think, also, that this book is a wonderful addition to anybody interesting in learning about a very modern and complex woman. Jewel is sexy, smart, kind, and possesses a very sharp wit. She's a paradox in that she's an honest individual who is uncomplicated, yet very complex at the same time. She's feminine yet is definitely "one of the boys" and can stand her own with men. She's definitely kind, yet she's probably the most sarcastic person I've ever read of. On top of that, she's optomistic yet her humor can be very dry. This book covers all of these facets and has been an absolutely delightful read for me.
Shows the many facets of Jewel's personality. Great Book!.......2003-06-06
This book gives a very fresh and surprising view of who Jewel really is and the many fascinating aspects of a very complicated yet simple person. By that, I mean she has many complicated ways about her but she needs the basic things to make her happy in life (This book will explain what I mean by that and more!) The book has little trivia tidbits, interviews with people who know jewel, and many new pictures. Did you know that Jewel has a dark and twisted sense of humor or that she was friends with Moby? Find out this and lots more in this excellent, in depth book! A+ Plus don't forget to check out Jewel's newest album 0304! It's great!

Book Description
Tough love for the uninitiated actor meets from-the-trenches guide for working and aspiring actors in this young, hip look at the demanding acting profession. A working actor shares his "day player" insight to the hilarity and heartbreak of a thespian trying to find work. Readers will get an unvarnished overview of the state of the business of live theater and film and television; pitfalls (and values) of type casting; what to expect before, during, and after an actor training program; the grunt work of starting a career; actors' experiences with agents, managers, and casting directors; a day in the life of an actor looking for work; tips for how to keep going in the face of constant rejection; and much more. Actors will learn what they need to know the first day on the set and how to cope with the economic realities of life as an actor. Success stories and myth-shattering anecdotes from the front lines bring a personal, intriguing tone to this guide. Whether one is just starting out, trying to build career momentum, or trying to explain to mom what it means to be an "under-five," this is the backstage guide to the acting trade that everyone must read.
Customer Reviews:
Definitive.......2006-10-14
There is no better book on how to create and continue a career as a professional actor in today's entertainment industry. This book should be required reading in acting schools of every kind throughout the country. His lessons are rooted in thorough research and extensive personal experience. This is a comprehensive guide on the steps necessary to give actors their best chance of success in the actual arena of the business. This book also teaches you about the all important psychological and emotional resources needed to be a professional artist in America. We should all be grateful to Pugatch for taking valuable time out of his life and career to write it. This book is an act of great generosity to his peers.
Good Life Lessons.......2006-09-11
This a great, smartly written book. It is useful for both actors who are just starting out, as well seasoned professionals who want to get back to the basics of the business. The book gives new insight into the other side of the acting business, brilliantly articulating how important it is to be your own best agent, producer and ally - and taking it to the next step by giving practical advice on making that happen. Pugatch's retelling of his peers' experiences, as well as the use of his own personal trials and tribulations are both entertaining and invaluable. He reminds us that how no matter where you are in your career, there are always hurdles, as well as triumphs, along the way. I highly recommend this book.
Covers everything you'll need to know about the industry.......2006-08-19

A must read!.......2006-07-22
This is the most helpful book about acting I have ever read. It is honest, candid, funny and so true! No sugar coating, no "just do this and you will make it!" It's a truthful look at how hard a business acting is, and how long it takes to build a career but also how rewarding it can be if it is your passion and you are patient and willing to stick through the tough times. This book shows you that it's okay to be an artist and a business person, and once you meld the two, you can have a career.
Acting is A Job is fantastic!.......2006-07-19
For the first time, an accurate and hilarious breakdown of what the acting business is really like. Thoroughly entertaining, concise and informative, the author strips away the frothy fantasy of Hollywood that is sold to the public and to beginning actors, preparing his reader for the emotional, practical and economic realities of the entertainment industry. A must read for veterans, novices, and their confused parents.

Customer Reviews:
A Fine Guide to Emacs.......2006-02-24
It is what is it is; It's a pocket guide. It's not exceptionally informative, but it provides baseline guidance for some of Emacs' many features.
If you're already a user of emacs, chances are you'll get a little something out of this book that you didn't know existed before (I'm using Emacs diary and calendar now...) but it's mostly good to throw at subusers while yelling at them to RTFM because they're always complaining to you that they don't know how to use Emacs...
good extra REFERENCE.......2002-01-10
This is not a book to teach you how to use Emacs as some other reviewers think. This book is a reference and a reference only. It gives you a listing of common emacs commands. If you won't be going into the nitty gritty details of Emacs, use this. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and get Learning Emacs. This books is good at accomplishing its purpose...a secondary reference for Learning Emacs.
It is only a pocket reference!.......2001-09-27
Yes, emacs is the most powerful editor and this book is only a little pocket reference! The book is unnecessary after 2 days (if you did not know emacs before). It is good only for a short introduction in the commands of emacs. After two days you must buy Learning Gnu Emacs, which is really a book to learn emacs!
Do not expect to much from a litte reference!

Almost useless.......2001-03-25
I've tried to used this to look stuff up while learning Emacs, and it is not useful to me. I have two main objections: 1. It is not organized in a way that makes it easy to look things up. There have been times when I knew the information was in the book (since I had seen it before), but had to just flip through every page to actually find it. 2. It's very incomplete. I cannot find a command in this book that takes me to a given line in a file. I suspect the book fails because he tries to cover everything. I do not expect a pocket reference to cover some nonstandard HTML mode, or how to use Emacs as my mail reader. I want a reference on how to use it to edit text and code. I probably won't open this book again; I'll just bookmark the online manual.
Ignore this book if you are a serious programmer.......2000-12-15
This books is totally useless for a serious C programmer used to an editor like vi and switching to emacs. It just doesn't cover enough "progamming" type features. You'll need a full length book.
