Book Description
These two volumes present empirical studies that have permanently altered professional debates over investment and productivity as sources of postwar economic growth in industrialized countries. The distinctive feature of investment is that returns can be internalized by the investor. The most straightforward application of this idea is to investments that create property rights, but these volumes broaden the meaning of capital formation to include investments in education and training.
Postwar US Economic Growth traces the outstanding postwar performance of the US economy to investments in tangible assets and human capital. This volume provides the starting point for a new consensus on policies to generate growth by stimulating and rewarding investments. These policies will focus on returns that can be internalized by investors, ending the fruitless search for "spill overs" that can generate substantial growth without providing incentives for capital formation.

Book Description
Seventeen essays include three previously unpublished works and offer sharply etched views on the principal topics of macroeconomics: growth, inflation, and unemployment. Robert Gordon re-examines their salient points in a new accessible introduction to modern macroeconomics. Each of the four parts into which the essays are grouped also offers a new introduction. The foreword by Nobel Laureate Robert M. Solow comments on the continuing importance of these essays which date from 1968 to the present.

Perfect Sound Forever is an engaging profile of the band Pavement and their quirkily dark, melodic sound and cryptic, mirth-filled lyrics.
Customer Reviews:
Negative Reviews Seem to Miss the Point.......2006-02-28
Yeah, parts of it are a cut and pasting of various articles and quotes from the DVD. But the beauty of the book is the synthesis of these parts combined with the author's interviews to create a well-documented and thoroughly researched account of the history of the band. It showed a logical progression of Pavement's history from early influences, band members meeting, creating amazing albums, and the problems that unfortunately broke them up. It's very convenient and resourceful to have all the information, such as EP reviews from obscure music magazines, in one place at least. To enjoy it for what it is, a definitive account of the history of Pavement, definitely makes it a great read for fans.
For Pavement fans only.......2005-12-03
I was excited to finally find a book about perhaps my favorite band. The early narrative about Pavement's origins and first recordings is excellent, but the author breezes through the later albums without much discussion. The photos, setlists, zine reviews and other miscellany are nice, but at only 216 pages this could use more text for the list price. Despite its faults I enjoyed reading this, hence the four stars.
juvenile and unoriginal.......2005-01-17
i know you love pavement. so do i. but don't buy this book. it reads like a high school paper copied from cliff notes. many of the lines in the book are lifted right from the dvd.
This book ist RAD! .......2004-10-08
If you're a pavement fan then I highly recommend this book. If you aren't a fan, then it probably isn't for you. However, if you are a pavement fan who would like to know more about this band, how their songs and albums came together and the relationship between the members and the band's dynamic and why they split, then I say go for it. If you like quirky sidenotes and memorabillia (IE college radio station playlists from 1989, Drag City newsletters, reviews of everything from early 7"s to all of the full length albums, hand written notes between band members, tour riders, and a comprehensive discograpahy) then you'll dig this.
The reviewer above who called it a "cut and paste job" is way, way off the mark. While it is true that parts of the book were taken from alternative mags of the 90s, these are noted as such and are really cool (like song by song explanations for Crooked Rain Crooked Rain and wowee zowee hand written by SM). I've been a pavement fan since the beginning and have many mags and numerous bootlegs and slow century etc etc and still found all sorts of stuff I didn't know, a lot of fresh information. The reviewer who said it will make you want to relisten to all of your pavement stuff was absolutely right. After finishing the book I found myself listening to live shows and the albums with a newfound appreciation and insight (since they've been a favorite of mine since '91 this is really cool). Worth the price yeah!!!
Pavement by Jovanovic: The Unfinished Tales.......2004-08-18
First the good news: "Perfect Sound Forever" makes you listen to your entire collection of Pavement records again, maybe even with the same enthusiasm as when you first heard the band, searching for sounds or elements in the music that you didn't notice before. But does it tell the complete story about the band that transformed alternative rock in the 90's? The answer, I'm sorry to tell, must be no. The composition of the story is too unbalanced to ever gain the status as the Pavement Bible. The first serious attempt to write the history of the band was only too welcome, especially since the Slow Century documentary left too many questions unanswered - at times I think of it as a film that was never completed (The DVD is definetely worth purchasing though). Unfortunately, "Perfect Sound Forever", starting of so promising, with the clever and entertaining introductions of the different bandmebers, also seems to lose its direction about half-way through the book - for Pavement-fans meaning somewhere around Wowee Zowee. Where Jovanovic at first was so thorough, and the story was so rich with fine and fun details, he now seems to tell us that this part is not that interesting, or that record was not so important, so let's just cut to the end. As a reader and Pavement-fan, this leads me to think that 1) The author is of the opinion that Pavemtns early years where far more important than the later ones, or 2) He didn't do good enough research to complete his work - or simply got tired of the project and just wanted to finish his book as fast as possible. If the answer is 1), Jovanovic should simply have made a book about Pavements earliest career. My general feelings, though, tell me that the answer is closer to the second alternative. Let me leave no doubt that this is a book well worth purchasing for every Pavement fan. Jovanovics passion for Pavement and their music makes a fun read at most times. But Jovanovic is not a historian, and if you are looking for the full story about your favourite lo-fi stars, the search is not through. I still don't know why High Llamas-member Dominic Mercott playd the drums on Carrot Rope and Major Leagues, or where and when the songs on the Major League-Ep where recorded. Perhaps someday, in a book that finishes the way it starts, I will get the answers. Overall close to 3 stars, but for making me remember why I love Pavements music, it gets 4.

Book Description
Mapping an ironic and poetic visual journey through Indian cities, I Love My India confounds our sense of the real with the often surreal forms of our social arrangements. Combining the eye of an ironic insider with that of a curious traveler, this is a witty and original account of street life, kitsch and popular culture. It invites a reading of the city through its signs, spaces, graffiti and dwellings. An unusual book that romances the pert idioms of Indian urban pop and street culture into a new definition of the global.
"Triggered by the interaction between urban Indian pop culture and the one generated by ever-growing cyberspace, the sensitivity of a young visionary begins to speak out."-Andrea Anastasio, Ex-Memphis and Artemide, Italy

You generally can't pick up knowledge of Cisco products casually, the way you can learn about Microsoft Windows, Unix, and other products that are more generally accessible. For this reason, Cisco: A Beginner's Guide performs a valuable service. It introduces internetworking novices to the language and fact base that underlie routers, switches, network protocols, and the rest of the Internet's infrastructure. True enough, no book can teach you everything you need to know about a subject as complex as internetworking, but this one does a great job of giving you the background you need to perform well in a class or do hands-on experiments intelligently.
The book goes heavy on prose, enabling you to slowly absorb the truth about complex systems as the author lays a foundation of knowledge and then builds upon it. Conceptual diagrams help drive home relationships among network devices, though the blueprints in the center of the book suffer from being split down the middle by the book's binding--foldouts would have been far better. This is a superb book, though, one of the best around on internetworking with Cisco. It would make an excellent first purchase for a future Cisco expert or a fine "fundamentals" reference for more accomplished network engineers. --David Wall
Topics covered: Internetworking from a theoretical standpoint, backed up by information on how Cisco products handle implementation (meaning, in part, that you get information on which Cisco lines and models are good for which jobs). Technically, readers get the goods on Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS), routers, switches, routing protocols, and security. There's great information on the pantheon of Cisco certifications too.

jumping around.......2007-06-02
This book was written by Toby J. Velte, Ph.D., CCNA, CEO, and dedicated to the "Boyz". Deepest thanks also goes to the young greenhorn Jeremy Cheney. On page 11 it shows a Router connecting two lan's. On page 23 it has the difference between an Access Switch and a LAN Switch. I never knew of a thing called a LAN switch - interesting! Chapter 3 discusses the Cisco Certification. On page 128 it states that Cisco devices are increasingly being tended to by non experts. That is in Chapter 4: Router Overview. On page 148 (Chapter 4) it has how to use TFTP for backing up the configuration file. Chapter 5 shows how to configure the router. Chapter 6 is about switches and hubs - just like on page 128 in chapter 4. Chpater 7 is about internet access products, just like those listed from pages 20 to 25 in chapter 1. Chapter 8 is about routing protocols just like thos ementioned in the INTRODUCTION, page XiV.
What I really like, is that finally, I found documentation that the gateway of a host has to be set to the router's ip. Sounds simple, now, but in a network with a server running BIND with forewarders and the default gateway and a simple router to connect to the Internet and such, this picture on page 505 woud have saved me a lot of time.
It's a good book but not in the same format at the CCNA courses offered by Cisco - the same Cisco that makes Cisco. A good book full of good information, presented in a logical format.
A Pure Joy To Read!.......2007-04-10
Toby and Anthony Velte have done a superb job on this book. I have been an IT professional for over 12 years. I have owned an ISP and consulted with many companies regarding their network infrastructures. The title of this book almost made me pass it up. I'm glad I didn't. I found myself reading this book and looking forward to the next chapter. This book is a good overview of Cisco Fusion architectures, and how to apply it in a real, pragmatic way. It was refreshing how complex technologies and ideas were made simple by good writing. This book is pure candy for an IT professional and a must read for any network engineer or designer. I'll be keeping my eyes open for any other books authored by Toby and Anthony Velte.
Great book!.......2007-03-23
This is a very practical book. If you are just entering the field of networking or would like to get a broad yet solid coverage of Cisco technologies, including firewalls, switches and routers, this book is an excellent choice! There are many certification oriented books on the market, and Cisco online publications may be hard to grasp sometimes (especially for novice users)... This book definitely fills the gap. You start off with the introduction to Cisco. Chapter two gives you a short networking primer. Subnetting can be a killer, so you may actually need some additional help outside this book. So step by step, whether it is about protocols, appliances, topologies, network design, security - you will learn and understand a lot! I also appreciate the authors including excellent illustrations, making the book even easier to "digest". This book is must have!
The first 40 pages in 768 pages........2004-11-17
An awful lot of computer books seem to leave out the first forty pages that should give you an introduction of just what it is that we are trying to do with this piece of hardware or software. This whole book, all 768 pages of it can be considered the first forty pages of any Cisco or Networking book that you might otherwise want to read.
This book talks about the internet, not about how to surf to a web page, but about the underlying structure - the backbone, the protocols, the way a message gets from here to there and back. The orientation is, as you might guess from the title, towards Cisco equipment. But I doubt that there are very many ISPs that don't have at least one Cisco box.
The book covers the Cisco philosophy on routers, switches, quality of service, security, wireless, content delivery, protocols, network management, network design, and finally even how to troubleshoot Cisco networks.
This is not a manual or certification cram guide for say the Cisco 12000 series router. This is the first forty pages of the manual on those products. And after reading the first forty pages, you might know if you need a Series 12000, or a Series 800. You'll at least be able to understand the manuals on these pieces of equipment.
Excellent book. I'd like to see the same thing on PC's, mainframes, clustering, and on and on.

A solid way to get started in network administration..........2006-01-09
It's difficult to find a networking book that covers the basics in comprehensive detail without weighing in at 1000 pages. But this one does a very good job... Networking: A Beginner's Guide (4th Edition) by Bruce Hallberg.
Content:
Part 1 - Networking Ins and Outs: The Business of Networking; Laying the Foundation; Understanding Networking; Understanding Network Cabling; Home Networking; Understanding Network Hardware; Making WAN Connections; Understanding Networking Protocols; Exploring Directory Services; Connections from Afar - Remote Network Access; Securing Your Network; Network Disaster Recovery; Network Servers - Everything You Wanted to Know but Were Afraid to Ask; Purchasing and Managing Client Computers
Part 2 - Hands-on Knowledge: Designing a Network; Installing and Setting Up Windows 2000 Server; Administering Windows 2000 Server - The Basics; Understanding Other Windows 2000 Server Services; Introducing Windows Server 2003; Installing Windows Server 2003; Setting Up Windows Server 2003; Installing Linux in a Server Configuration; Introduction to Linux Systems Administration; Setting Up a Linux Web Server with Apache
Glossary; Index
This is far more than a quickie home networking guide designed to allow you to hook up your wireless laptop. Instead, it's more designed for someone who is interested in learning how to set up a full network and administer it much like a professional would. Hallberg covers everything from cabling on up to the actual network operating system. While the chapters on Windows 2000/2003 aren't designed to be comprehensive reference manuals, they are complete enough to get the fledging network administrator up and running. The information is solid and readable, and working your way through the material would yield a solid foundation from which to start a career in network administration. And you can do so without getting bogged down in endless details that would be beyond you as a starter...
A Good Place to Start.......2005-09-24
Note that the sub-title of this book says that it is a Beginner's Guide. It is designed for people who understand computers and have some experience in using operating systems such as Windows, Mac, or Linux. It starts with this base and talks about how to interface these systems into networks.
One thing that I like about this book is that it starts with an overview of what networking is, how the company will benefit, what the goals of establishing a network might be. From there it goes into the types of networks, i.e. peer to peer, client/server. I often find that this overview, what should be the first 40 pages or so of the book, is missing. Here Mr. Hallberg does an excellent job of providing the basic understanding of 'this is what I'm trying to do.'
After 38 pages (not quite a full forty pages, but close) he begins to get down to the nuts and bolts like cabling, repeaters, hubs, switches, and firewalls. From there he goes on about like you would expect to more advanced topics until the basics of networking are pretty well covered.
One particular strong point is the chapter on Network Disaster Recovery. You're going to have a disaster, it's just a matter of time. Having a place to at least start looking for how to recover is very good and not common in beginning level books.
One point I would like to see more of in a beginning book is security. Windows XP has some security features built in. A discussion of using their firewall vs. a hardware firewall would be good. And some discussion of keeping the salesmen out of the accounting package would be nice. Perhaps in the next edition.
Conclusion: A Very Good Place to Start.

Customer Reviews:
Clear and Concise, not sure why it has bad reviews.......2005-11-12
I bought this book about one year ago, and never got around to reading it. I ran into some Networking problems this evening and cracked open the book to find some answers. I started reading at page one and a few hours later Im nearly half way through the book.
I consider myself to be quite computer savvy but networking has never been my thing. This book assumes no prior knowledge to networking as the title would suggest. The concepts are clear and they are broken up into relatively small chunks which are easy to digest. There are very few long winded explanations and I have not been left wondering "huh?" at any point thus far. Its not extremely comprehensive but the again, its not supposed to be, its a beginners guide and I think it delivers on the goods. Im not sure why its gotten poor reviews from other readers... I read a lot of computer books and I have found this to be one of the easiest to digest that I have ever read.
Spend Your Money Elsewhere.......2004-02-27
Currently, I hold an MSCIS with emphasis in wide-area network (WAN) technology, and I was given the book as a gift nearly a year ago. About five days ago, I opened the book and began reading through the pages. I read the book from front to back, and I found many errors in the writing as well as difficult-to-grasp explanations that were not completely accurate. Additionally, Chapter 13 leaves the reader confused to say the least. Was the book intended to teach basic networking concepts or hypertext markup language (HTML) coding for beginners? In the same chapter, the reader is left wondering if he/she purchased a book on website design methods and techniques rather than networking. In my humble opinion, the book is not one that should be read by someone seriously interested in obtaining a higher degree in the field of networking as a subset of the information technology major of study. For one who knows nothing about information technology and recently purchased a computer, it might seem to be a wholesome read, but from my standpoint, I would preferred to have spent the time reading something a bit more substantial in both quality and content. Lastly, most end users rarely utilize the command shell, commonly referred to as the command prompt, to complete any task in the graphical user interface (GUI) environments of contemporary operating systems, so discussing ping and other such utilities does nothing to boost the learning curve of the beginner. If the book is given as a gift, then take my advice, donate it to the public library and ask for a tax deduction slip.
Very very poor checking.......2004-02-24
This book looked fine to me in the store but very shortly after I commenced to read it I discovered that it was obviously a rush job and very little care seems to have gone into checking it. Chapter two makes reference to material thats supposed to be in Chapter one but isnt while theres reference to stuff within Chapter two as being in chapter two (sorry it thats a bit complicated:) but it is obvious that this has just been cut and pasted in the revision from a later chapter. Given the poor quality of the checking it would make me lose confidence in the technical side of things. How can you trust a book where the poor quality of checking and proofreading is so obvious?
Good entry level material..........2003-11-29
Review
I'm the type of developer who really doesn't know much about the networking side of things. I can follow instructions OK, but when you start talking about subnet masks and DHCP, you lose me quickly. While I don't want to become a networking engineer, I do want to understand a bit more about the technology. To that end, I read through this book. Good reading...
The book starts with the basics of networks and protocols. From there, you will learn about the different types of networks (peer-to-peer and network operating systems), and how you can set up networking with three major NOS packages. With that basic foundation in place, the author branches out into how networking works with the Internet. Finally, the topic of network security is covered in order to be able to keep yourself safe.
The material is a good mix of explanation and usable instructions. For example, if you are setting up Linux to work in a networked environment, you can use the information in this book to help you get it set up and running. There are a number of Tip and Note sidebars that add additional information (such as disk partitioning on Linux) that may not be exactly network related, but is important information to know within the context of networking. Each chapter ends with an "Absolute Minimum" section that recaps the chapter with a number of bullet points that were covered.
Some people might find the cutesy graphics a bit too much. But remember, this is a beginner's book, not a comprehensive "how to" for running your network.
Conclusion
If you are looking for an understandable introduction to networking that doesn't assume you want to become a certified networking engineer, this book will work well for you.
It contains more problems than are acceptable........2003-10-12
As computers increase in power and capability, they are becoming more and more like a household appliance. Like the television set, when they first appeared there was at most one to a house. That has now changed, as many families have several computers, sometimes one for each family member. At this time, there are fourteen computers in my house that service the five inhabitants.
The combination of this change, a drop in price of the connection hardware and easier to use networking software has led to many people networking their household computers together. In many cases, this is also economical , as it allows for resources such as printers to be shared. However, networking computers is quite different from using standard application software or programming, so anyone who wants to build a network will most likely need some assistance. That is the primary audience for this book, although anyone considering a career in computer networking will also find it a suitable primer.
All of the basics are covered and then some, as many of the protocols that drive networking are also briefly examined. Additional topics include hosting a web site, working with applications loaded on a network server, protecting your data and an initial foray into network security. True to the title, none is covered in any great depth, but there are many pointers to other Que books that contain additional material on the topic.
Unfortunately, a lot of the material is outdated. Networking is an area changing as fast as the mother of all networks, namely the Internet, and a book being somewhat behind the curve is inevitable. However, this one is more behind than it should be. There are errors, something that is also unavoidable, but the number in this book exceeds what is generally considered acceptable.
Networking computers is a skill that has filtered down to the home, after starting at a very high esoteric plane. These changes have led to a demand for basic books in networking, a condition that this book satisfies, but only to a point.
