        Book Description

This major new textbook is intended for students taking introductory courses in probability theory and statistical inference. The primary objective of this book is to establish the framework for the empirical modeling of observational (nonexperimental) data. The text is extremely student friendly, with pathways designed for semester usage, and although aimed primarily at students at second-year undergraduate level and above studying econometrics and economics, Probability Theory and Statistical Inference will also be useful for students in other disciplines that make extensive use of observational data, including finance, biology, sociology and psychology.

        5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-01-03

the book is great for anybody who wants to know the foundations of statistical and probability modelling. it covers all aspects of modelling like defining a statistical space, probability model, estimation, inference and its chapters on stochastic process were very informative. It was a great learning experience through this book. Basically it explains why we do it and how we do it

5 out of 5 stars the best foundation in stats imaginable.......2001-07-22

        This book is absolutely remarkable.

It presents the material traditionally taught in the second-year statistics (but actually goes well beyond, e.g. stochastic processes) and will be of interest to all people interested to (re-)learn statistics well, either undergraduates, or advanced students of any level. Professors should also read it maybe use it in class. Students will thank them.

The author took more than 14 years to polish it, and I would bet that scholars of pedagogy will put this book as an example of the highest possible level of their discipline. I would also bet that this book will have a long and brilliant career in statistical education. On gets the feeling that the author gave the same care and energy to the elaboration of this book as people commonly give to research.

The author is also a man with a mission. In his preface, one can read with pleasure and disbelief a passionate attack on the dumbing-down of undergraduate education in Europe and America. Having taught undergrads in commerce with the "predigested pap" he is talking about, I can really relate to the frustration of the author. There is no dilution of material or dumbing down here: all the ugly details are given, which makes that book not only a pedagogical tool but also a great reference.

There is no book on the market that is so polished in both presentation and discussion, that exposes intermediate stats at such an intelligent, comprehensive level, and finally that uses the historical development to project such clarity on the actual state of the science. I would say the closest competitor to this book is the great volume "Intermediate Statistics" by Dale Poirier, which has more econometrics and which might be a bit more comprehensive on the bayesian side, but the main focus of this one is on UNDERSTANDING and SYNTHESIZING. By the way, the focus of this book is statistics, not econometrics, despite the fact that the author has written extensively in econometrics.

I wish I would be an undergrad again and re-learn statistics with this book. Nevertheless, readers of all levels will learn something from it.

Ah, and the price is right. Value for your money!

        5 out of 5 stars Spanos -- bigger, better.......2000-07-25

Like many, I used the 1986 big green Spanos book to learn econometrics. Simply put, this latest follows the course charted by the first book -- it first covers probability theory, and then uses this to motivate the modelling portion of the book. Unlike the 1986 book, which was terse in places, this monograph is much more comprehensive. It isn't so much that new subjects are covered (though some are), but the current treatment far surpasses the 1986 book. More graphs, to aid geometric intution, are included. More text discusses the implications of the mathematics. More useful, in short, for a graduate student trying to learn econometrics. The only book I think is in this class is DeGroot, and that book suffers from little attention paid to econometrics (though it does do the probability material quite well).

Highly, highly recommended. And one other bonus: Spanos discusses in the introduction why he refuses to water things down, and even has a quote from the mathemetician Binmore.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for applied stats and econometrics.......2000-03-25

I own a number of econometric and statistics texts, but this is easily the most comprehensive and probably the most important stats book that I own. Not only does it cover just about every stat concept one would need for doing applied research, but it teaches the reader how to think logically and clearly about econometrics problems. It teaches the reader how to properly integrate economic theory and statistical information for conducting good research. If you want to learn applied econometrics the proper way, read this book.

        Book Description

Intertemporal macroeconomics relies on microeconomics and general equilibrium analysis to describe choices of agents over a long period of time, perhaps infinitely long. To this, methods of growth theory are linked and the effects of policy interventions are examined as the interaction between decisions of agents and policy interventions. Two basic approaches areexplored: models of infinitely-lived agents (Cass-Ramsey-Koopmans approach) and models of overlapping-generations (Allais-Fisher-Samuelson approach). In addition to fiscal policy, the more controversial questions concerning monetary models and monetary policies are considered. The book offers a framework and a systematic exploration of these and related questions. It also introduces models of endogenous growth, both real and monetary models.

            Book Description

Down, Boy! is a tongue-in-cheek guide to breaking in a new boyfriend. It's a comprehensive manual that covers the finer points of finding a boyfriend (for example, the "rescue" from an entirely inappropriate woman); the major boyfriend groups and breeds (sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy); how to identify them and choose the one that best fits your needs and lifestyle; and guidelines for first dates and bonding with a new boyfriend. Also explored in depth are the types of training behavior (Pavlovian and Skinnerian), obendience, and activity; rewards and punishments; establishing communication, including basic commands as well as nonverbal cues; exercise, feeding, and grooming of the boyfriend; and determining when he's ready to go "off-leash," with tips for taking him out. Down, Boy! is funny, hip, and content-rich. Enhanced with quizzes, charts, FAQs, and (fictitious) advice from Elizabeth Taylor (the only woman known to have married a man from each breed), it's a lively read and even includes some solid, practical advice for starting and maintaining a romantic relationship.

This book is attractively printed eye-candy and I picked it up as a captive audience. I'd still prefer a 3 month old issue of Time in a dentist's office. Not funny, and dimly smart.

            5 out of 5 stars Oh boy.......2004-06-10

Ok, I'm a guy, but this was pretty funny. My friends wanted to figure out what "breed" I was, and my girlfriend says I'm a terrier. Is that good? I don't know.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and practical!.......2004-05-28

Down, Boy is a cheeky guide to finding the perfect mate using the principles of dog training. The book is very affectionate toward men and their quirks and personalities -- and is actually practical, too (and smartly written). A very fun read, with quizzes and charts and the inspired advice of Elizabeth Taylor.

Rock She Wrote is a remarkably diverse collection of 62 articles, scholarly essays and personal journal excerpts by women about rock, pop, and rap, with contributions from columnists, academics, and the musicians themselves, including Marianne Faithful, Patti Smith, Kim Gordon, and Donna Dresch. Don't buy this--or, alternatively, dismiss it--thinking that it deals solely with the "women in rock" "issue." Do buy it because this is a great collection of music journalism that will be central in breaking down barriers that made any of us--men or women--think that it ever was an issue.

            Book Description

Brings together music criticism, fan experience, and performers' first person accounts from more that 60 women writers for 1960s to the 1990s.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's girls vs. boys in the rock boxing ring.......2004-07-04

This anthology represents more than 25 years of women demanding their props in the pop music arena. Collected here for the first time by Evelyn McDonald and Ann Powers, these essays demonstrate the talent, insight, and innovation that women have brought to a playing field already trampled to smithereens by legions of boys, boys, and more boys.

Contributions from performing artists like Patti Smith, Donna Dresch, Marianne Faithfull, and Cherie Currie provide snapshots of the very act of being female in the music industry. Sharp commentaries by journalists including Gina Arnold, the late Lori Twersky, Mim Udtovitch, Jaan Uhelszki, Deborah Frost, Lisa Jones, and bell hooks analyze the pop genre as it relates to both sexes, and in some cases skewer the men who have owned it waaaaaay too long.

I really enjoyed this book, and you will too. The only real issue I had was the editors insisting on identifying Patricia Kennealy-Morrison by referencing her 1970 Wiccan marriage to Jim Morrison. Can you say "Mrs. Mojo Risin'?" Oh well. I guess you can't have everything.

5 out of 5 stars Write on, sisters!.......2002-05-28

This is a fantastic anthology of feminist music criticism. With plenty of variety, information and verbosity, this 500-page tome is a veritable feast of wit.

Spanning the last few decades and mainly American-based, Rock She Wrote reveals the polemic and visionary deliberations of a host of women, including New York journalist Ellen Willis, who was stimulated by New Journalism and Critical Theory in the late 60's. And just as you'll never get bored hearing how Patti Smith "f--ked with form", or how women are ghettoised within the industry, neither is it tiring to rediscover the roots of Riot Grrrl as defined by Sassy magazine.

From the radical rhetoric of San Francisco's Tribe-8 to Kim Gordon's Sonic Youth tour diary, to Courtney Love being interviewed by Pamela Des Barres, to Susan Brownmiller's Rolling Stone piece on the vilification of Yoko Ono, to bell hoks' attack on Madonna, it's an all-encompassing read.

              Book Description

Conjuring the Folk addresses the dynamic relation between metropolitan artistic culture and its popular referents during the Harlem Renaissance period. From Jean Toomer's conclusion that "the Negro of the folk-song has all but passed away" to Zora Neale Hurston's discovery of "a rich field for folk-lore" in a Florida lumber camp, Harlem Renaissance writers made competing claims about the vitality of the African-American "folk." These competing claims, David Nicholls explains, form the basis of a discordant conversation on the question of modernity in African America.
In a series of revisionary readings, Nicholls studies how the "folk" is shaped by the ideology of form. He examines the presence of a spectral "folk" in Toomer's modernist pastiche, Cane. He explores how Hurston presents folklore as a contemporary language of resistance in her ethnography, Mules and Men. In Claude McKay's naturalistic romance, Banana Bottom, Nicholls discovers the figuration of an alternative modernity in the heroine's recovery of her lost "folk" identity. He unearths the individualist ethos of Booker T. Washington in two novels by George Wylie Henderson. And he reveals how Richard Wright's photo-documentary history, 12 Million Black Voices, places the "folk" in a Marxian narrative of modernization toward class-consciousness.
A provocative rereading of the cultural politics of the Harlem Renaissance, Conjuring the Folk offers a new way of understanding literary responses to migration, modernization, and the concept of the "folk" itself.
David G. Nicholls is a post-doctoral fellow in the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture, University of Chicago.

I love Dawson's Creek! The books are just as good!! I wish that in "Major Meltdown" Dawson and Joey got back together! I saw the title and thought, wow this looks so cool, I have to add it to my collection! I'm a Dawson's Creek fanatic! The book was my favorite out of the other ones I own which are the following: Long Hot Summer, Calm Before The Storm, and Shifting Into Overdrive. I keep reading it over and over again! I wrote my own story about Dawson's Creek, but I can't think of a good title. I think that a good title interests the reader!! Thank you so very much for letting me voice my opinion! Yours Truly, A devoted fan!!

              4 out of 5 stars Great, but...........2007-08-24

This book is incredibilly well written and has a very comprehensive way of explaining the ways of Component oriented programing. Explains its differences betweent COP and OOP. You can easily understand what the author has in mind, BUT, I found one big flaw on this book. Not that this flaw will make the book less comprehensive, but it will make it less fun.
In all concepts it presents Examples, but not exercises. It explains the features and then give a short example to it. It doesn't stimulate the reader to actually build a code within a major context. You read, see the example and move on to the next topic. It is not fun to just stay around and read and read and read without actually working with the book. It is still a great book, but the approach to the reader could be better.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with an eye for Component Oriented Design.......2007-08-16

While going over component and control design, this book teaches the principles of the component-oriented design philosophy. The author doesn't pander and isn't overly verbose; getting to the point and explaining his meaning efficiently and succinctly. Definitely worth the read.

1 out of 5 stars Good for Newbies.......2007-06-08

Book goes through the entire process of building controls, nothing is untouched. It dwells however much too long on the 'standard' topics of installation, distribution, setting up etc and is rather lite on the the real stuff like building controls that look and feel like commercial controls. Would be a good book if it had 20% of the pages.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent in what it covers.......2007-03-08

              Pros:
Material that was covered was done an a very concise, clear and justfied manner. More so than just about any other computer book I have read. As others have mentioned, the explanation of the mechanics of remoting are excellent. The coverage on the other topics was incredibly informative as well its just that Remoting stands out since the topic is not covered as well elsewhere. Several helper/extension class examples are included which help to enforce good practices. I found the coding practices addendum to be a helpful summary of the topics discussed in the book.

              Cons:
While remoting is discussed, it defers discussion of the EnterpriseServices namespace (object pooling, transactions, lifecycling, etc) to a previously published book. I find these features a necessary consideration in component design. Instead of feeling like I know everything about dot NET components, I now feel like I have to read another book. Having said that, WCF, at least at first glance, appears to be among other things a rework of ServicedComponents into an attribute driven dot NET framework and less reliant on COM+. I hope that is the case because JEE has already proven that inhertance based component mangagement such as ServiceComponent cramp system architectures. I also feel like the book does not adequately cover the use cases appropriate for designing a distributed application. It covers the mechanics/how fine but it doesn't address the when and where portion of distributed components.

Juval's latest book covers WCF and I am looking forward to reading it and hope it will address the areas I felt still needed to be addressed by this book.

              4 out of 5 stars Interfaces Factoring.......2007-02-02

On page 73 of this book the author wrote:

" An in-depth discussion of how to decompose a system into components and how to discover interface methods and properties is beyond the scope of this book".

I would encourage the author to write a book that discusses specifically about interface factoring and to provide more examples on how components should be decomposed and organized in large scale applications.

Aimed at the more experienced developer or Windows administrator responsible for deployment, COM and .NET Component Services provides an expert guide to getting the most out of COM+ services on the Windows 2000/XP platform, including material on the new .NET platform. This guide will help you create state-of-the-art, scalable Windows components that take full advantage of transactions, object pooling, and powerful administrative features available in COM+.

While Microsoft is about to replace COM components with the new .NET standard, COM+ is still a viable technology and will be fully supported (and even enhanced) in the new .NET Framework. Much of COM and .NET Component Services concentrates on C++ and Visual Basic examples that explore areas of functionality, plus practical tips for configuring and administering components with such tools as the COM+ Services Explorer.

The expert perspective here will help you design components that work with COM+ effectively. There is plenty of background material on COM+ topics like marshaling and interception, which allow objects to be pooled behind the scenes on the Windows platform. But the focus is on the real APIs and programming techniques developers need to work with COM+. This practical focus extends to specific suggestions and pitfalls to avoid for each area of COM+ development. There is good material on COM+ transactions here, along with some excellent material on asynchronous components that tap COM+ queuing capabilities.

The book concludes with a long chapter on .NET, which brings this title current with Microsoft's new programming platform. The author recaps the APIs covered earlier in the book using .NET and C#. (COM+ is still a part of .NET, but you'll use a different set of APIs and programming language to work with it.) The book concludes with a glance at new COM+ 1.5 features, plus a quick introduction to .NET.

In all, this title strikes a good balance between the old and the new. After reading this smart and fast-moving text, developers will be able to immediately learn COM+ skills that will have practical benefit for both current and future Windows software. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Overview on COM+ Components (features and basic deployment), COM+ contexts (marshaling and interception), COM+ instance management, object pooling, just-in-time activation (JITA), COM+ transactions, transaction basics, compensating transactions, two-phase commits and voting, apartments and concurrency, activities, the neutral threading apartment, APIs for manipulating the COM+ catalog, security (roles, programmatic security and pitfalls), queued components (synchronous and asynchronous components), COM+ events and the Event Service (filtering, distributed and asynchronous events), sample code in C++ (and Visual Basic 6), .NET serviced components, .NET packages and APIs for COM+ development, introduction to COM+ 1.5 and the .NET Framework, and administration and programming hints for COM+.

              Book Description

With COM and .NET Component Services, skilled COM developers can leverage their knowledge for the next generation of components to be built for Microsoft's new .NET framework. A primary goal of Microsoft's COM+ is to provide proven design solutions for scalable systems. Assuming experience with classic COM, COM and .NET Component Services focuses on the added services of COM+, including support for transactions, queued components, events, concurrency management, and security. Along the way, it ably demonstrates that COM+ is a masterpiece of design and usability from the ground up--truly a mature set of component services oriented for the middle tier. COM+ provides a foundation for robust, enterprise-wide, mission-critical distributed applications. And it's not limited to Internet applications. You can use COM+ services in the same places as classic COM components: in-house two-tier information systems, client-tier controls, desktop applications, machine control components, and every other conceivable application of COM. COM and .NET Component Services is the first book to stress the importance of learning to use COM+ services for both .NET and COM component-based applications. Since most companies have considerable investment in existing code base and development skills, COM+ can serve as a migration path for companies and developers. Companies can start (or continue) their projects in COM, using COM+ as a supporting platform for component services, and then when the time comes to move to .NET, they can start plugging .NET components seamlessly into the same architecture, reusing and interacting with their existing COM components.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, straight to the point.......2003-11-22

Don't worry about the slight .Net presence in the book; there is no "new generation" of COM+ in .Net, .Net simply includes COM+ (of course there is a new name for it: Enterprise Services, but this is just pure marketing matter)!
I haven't finished the book yet, but I can say Juval found the right way in explaining most of the COM+ features and why are they indispensable in building enterprise apps by focusing on the business logic and not on the plumbing (object pooling for supporting scalability, transaction management, synchronization etc). The writing style is clear, the content is exhaustive enough for covering all the aspects of COM+/.Net Enterprise Services and, the last but not the least, the book has less than 400 pages.
              Other recommended books about COM+:
-Transactional COM+, by Tim Ewald: if you need to know more COM+ internals about contexts, apartments etc.
-Programming Distributed Apps with COM+ and VB6, by Ted Pattison: excellent lecture, easy and explains very well the "why"s.
              - Visual Basic and COM+ Programming: by Peishu Li. Very similar style with Juval's book, except that the code is VB instead of C++.

3 out of 5 stars Beware...COM Services and some pages about .NET.......2003-08-01

Don't get me wrong!! It's a great book, for understanding COM+ and use it, without all the headache of learning "why".
But i think many people would believe is a good about .NET and how to use COM Services, but you will get only a few pages about implementing both technologies together.
But, like i've said, it's a good book about COM Services.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Condition(Just like New).......2003-01-31

The book was in excellent condition and looks like new. Although the shipping was 2 days late but based on the book condition its worth waiting.
              I can rate A++.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing explanations of COM+ Services.......2001-12-07

I have read several books now on COM+ and MTS before it, and I have never quite understood how everything ties together and works together. So I have been stumbling in the dark on this for years. My components work, but I never knew if they worked optimally.

This book changed all that. Finally, it all makes sense. This is by far the best book on this subject that I have read. Every piece of COM+ is explained clearly and with enough detail to get the point across without bogging down the reader. It even answered some difficult mysteries for me such as "Why is the JITA checkbox greyed out for my transactional components?" I couldn't even find an answer for that one on the newsgroups.

The .NET coverage is brief and was probably an afterthought (in that it appears in a chapter at the end rather than integrated throughout the book), but it is enough to get started. I am looking forward to a second edition of this book that focuses on .NET and has all the code examples in C#. Juval, please write that!

5 out of 5 stars Know COM, Learn COM+ and .NET component Services.......2001-12-01

This is one of the best technical books, I have read. It assumes knowledge of COM and object-oriented technologies. The clarity in the areas COM+ interception, threading, security, transaction handling is exceptional.
