Book implies college CS students are idiots........2004-07-16
Unfortunately Liberty comes across with a chip on his shoulder against formal college education in this book. Statements like some of the best programmers he knows are "taxi drivers and psychologists" and former university training mainly teaches students to operate "mainframes". In the Introduction it says "According to a study by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, by the year 2005 there will be over two million new jobs for software professionals!" which fails to mention most of the jobs will be overseas easily outsourced as making tennis shoes. Otherwise, Liberty still shows his expertise and there are good sections on advice for interviewing and resume writing. But in the end as an idiot, I wished I had majored in engineering instead of computer science especially when 90% of my undergraduate computer science student body were graduate students from the eastern side of the world.

I think this book is the best choice for peaple who are wanting to learn how to program but don't know where to start. It doesn't teach you how to program in a specific language, but it shows you the basic thing of lots of languages. It has lots of book and magazine suggestions also. This book is very easy to understand. Although you might not agree with what Jesse Liberty is suggesting for your career, it's a great book.

A more appropriate title for this book would have been "An Introduction to the Field of Computer Programming." It's an excellent read for someone interesting in understanding what computer programming is about. It is not, as the author claims, a guide to building a career as a programmer.
The author would have you believe that all you need to become a Software Engineer is to study a couple of books on VB or C++ that he's written (indeed, much of this book seems like an advertisement to persuade the reader to buy his other books). That's like saying you can become a doctor by reading physiology books in your spare time. ...
If you're considering a career in programming, this book can help give you an idea of what it's like so you can decide whether it's for you or not. Then, if you do plan to pursue this field, take some computer science classes at your local college or university. ...
It has worked for me completely!!!.......2002-03-02
Some time ago (December 1999), I wrote a review on this book and I stated that it was working for me. Well, I wanted to update that message and say that it has worked for me completely. I am now a Test Engineer (since May 2001) for a major company ... and I have completed my first project. I created the program using MFC(Microsoft Foundation Classes) and C++. It has impressed my supervisor throughly and is in use at the company at this time.
This came about by hard work and study on my own part (I did not go to college.) and by studying and applying the information found in this book and some others (especially Jesse Liberty's "Teach Yourself C++ in 21 days" and Scott Meyer's "Effective C++").
If you are really serious about changing careers to computer programming, BUY AND USE THIS BOOK!!! I did and within one year I started a better paying career that is very enjoyable and rewarding to me.

As much as I would like to become immersed in programming, the field is becoming obsolete. There are too many easier ways to program something like an HTML document than to write it out long-hand. Had I found this book/field five or even ten years ago I could be rich by now. Oh well! But the book itself isn't bad, it just needed to be more specific on the actual programming steps instead of pushing that off to other resources. This book is a "How to learn about Programming" instead of the actual programming steps. But for those points, it was very good.

A collection of the most important papers in ARCH literature.......2001-08-27
R.F. Engle invented the ARCH model (1982). Since then, such models (the original ARCH and a plethora of cousins inspired by Engle's.) appear every time you deal with heteroscedasticity problems. Being one of the most important developments of the last 20 years, every manual dealing with that is welcome. As the title suggests, this one is a collection of the most important papers of the ARCH literature. You'll find among others, the original Engle's paper presenting the ARCH, Bollerslev paper proposing the GARCH, Engle, Lilien and Robins ARCH-M paper, and many others dealing with their stationarity, the advantages of being good diffusion approximations, many empirical studies (stock returns and its volatility, exchange rates, etc...) and semi-parametric ARCH models. I can't deny the utility of the manual (If you are able to read the whole book, you'll understand pretty well the ARCH theory), but be warned, you won't have the very latest developments, the ones that appeared during the 90 decade (I recommend, in that case, to buy "Non-Linear time series models in empirical finance", by Franses and van Dijk). All the articles here appeared in specialized econometric journals; Robert Engle chooses the most important ones. This book is good, but you should be aware that some of the articles are particularly difficult as the ones written by Nelson, a brilliant econometrician. I think undergraduate students won't appreciate the book, it's pretty hard; even graduate students not specialized in econometrics will have problems. It's a book for those knowing already something about ARCH, the others, if they want to learn, should start somewhere else. I propose James D. Hamilton book or, a simpler one, Enders manual.

Contributing to the literature on European integration, this book investigates the perceptions of political actors towards the creation of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in Europe. The research is largely based on personal interviews conducted with key informants in central banks, finance ministries, employers' organizations, and trade unions in Britain, France, and Germany. It examines why actors perceived EMU to serve or frustrate their interests, concluding that actors favored the EMU for a variety of reasons.

Verdun aims to discover why, given that EMU greatly reduced national sovereignty, there was so little public discussion of its costs and benefits. As she noted of EMU, "This transfer of national sovereignty can arguably be considered to be one of the most far-reaching formal transfers of sovereignty to the European level that the European Community (EC) members have witnessed to date." She studied the ways that central bankers, Ministries of Finance, employers' organisations and trade union leaderships in Britain, France and Germany all perceived EMU. The bankers, Ministries and employers' organisations agreed that EMU would strengthen the market mechanism in Europe. They also agreed that it would assist their efforts to create a single European state. As Verdun observed, "EMU will eventually necessitate more integration of economic, fiscal, social and labour policies." Some quarters of the TUC hoped that associating themselves with the EU's decision-making process would increase their power. But the more the TUC claimed to set the EU agenda on social and employment issues, the more it linked itself to the EU's disastrous impact on Britain's industry and welfare. Some trade union leaders thought that the EU would restore the influence over economic policy-making that they had lost at national level. But cosying up to the employer, whether European or British, weakens our unions, not strengthens us. Some thought that possible gains from the Social Charter would justify the certain losses from labour market flexibility. But who talks about the Social Charter today? Did it save any of the 96,000 manufacturing jobs destroyed in Britain last year? So why was there so little public discussion of EMU's costs and benefits? Verdun does not finally explain, but one suspects that it was because its benefits would accrue only to the ruling classes of Britain, France and Germany, while the public, the vast majority of us who have to work for a living, would suffer all the costs.

Downloading is the means by which EU policy is amalgamated with domestic legislation and institutions. Up-loading indicates the use of national governments or sub-national interests in the development of European integration processes. European integration takes place at the supranational level and in general, is distinct from Europeanization. Through a study of financial services regulation these processes are made explicit.

This study aims at unifying the empirical research on interest-rate pass-through in the euro zone. After endogenously determining structural breaks we select optimal pass-through models, which allow for thresholds and asymmetric adjustment. By applying these models to monetary policy shocks as well as cost-of-funds changes, we show that in post-break periods monetary policy transmission has become faster, that heterogeneity across the euro zone has decreased in some banking markets, and that more competition improves the pass-through predominantly in deposit markets. As national characteristics are still important pass-through determinants, convergence remains incomplete and monetary policy will continue to operate in a heterogeneous euro zone.

We examine the influence of the European Monetary Union (EMU) on the dynamic process of stock market integration over the period 2 January 1989-29 May 2003 using a bivariate EGARCH framework with time-varying conditional correlations. We find that there has been a clear regime shift in European stock market integration with the introduction of the EMU. The EMU has been necessary for stock market integration as unidirectional causality was found. Linear systems regression analysis shows that the increase in both regional and global stock market integration over this period was significantly driven in part, by macroeconomic convergence associated with the introduction of the EMU and financial development levels.

In this paper, we examine the integration of European government bond markets using daily returns over the 1998-2003 period with a set of complementary techniques to assess the time varying level of financial integration. We find evidence of strong contemporaneous and dynamic linkages between Euro zone bond markets with that of Germany. However, there is much weaker evidence outside of the Euro zone for the three accession markets of Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, and the UK. In general, the degree of integration for these markets is weak and stable, with little evidence of further deepening despite the increased political integration associated with further enlargement of the European Union (EU).

I'm using this book for a Social History of Rock and Roll class, and it's an incredibly easy read without being dumb. The subject matter is complex, but it's done in a way that's presented with a good setup to give you the proper background and context for each article and why it's important. We're skipping around for the class, but I'll be putting this book on my nightstand/in my house for quick 10-min reads. Superb collection.

I don't know Ian Peddie The Editor, but I do know Ian Peddie The Professor. So far as I can tell, he's put a lot of work into this edition and isn't the type to lead one of his audience astray. Trust him, and he'll get you where you need to be.

The book is most definitely for 'Dummies'. A very basic and limited overview of the Visio 2000 topic with little detail offered for the reader beyond a brief introduction to the subject. Leaves me looking for my next Visio 2000 book.
