ASIN: 3540262393 |
Book Description
This reference work and graduate level textbook considers a wide range of models and methods for analyzing and forecasting multiple time series. The models covered include vector autoregressive, cointegrated, vector autoregressive moving average, multivariate ARCH and periodic processes as well as dynamic simultaneous equations and state space models. Least squares, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods are considered for estimating these models. Different procedures for model selection and model specification are treated and a wide range of tests and criteria for model checking are introduced. Causality analysis, impulse response analysis and innovation accounting are presented as tools for structural analysis.
The book is accessible to graduate students in business and economics. In addition, multiple time series courses in other fields such as statistics and engineering may be based on it. Applied researchers involved in analyzing multiple time series may benefit from the book as it provides the background and tools for their tasks. It bridges the gap to the difficult technical literature on the topic.

Book Description
Candlesticks charts, although originating in Japan, now play an important role in technical analysis worldwide. Now, for the first time in English, this book presents the next stage of candlestick analysis - Ichimoku Kinko Hyo. Sometimes called Cloud Charts, this analysis adds moving averages to candlestick charts. But moving averages a little different from those traditionally used in the West. For trending markets, Cloud Charts add an essential tool for analysing near-term areas of support and resistance. The book covers the history of candlestick charts - explaining the context in which they developed. And then moves on to explain how in the 1930s a journalist, with the pseudonym Ichimoku Sanjin, started refining candlestick analysis by adding a series of moving averages. The book explains in detail how to construct Cloud Charts and how to interpret them. A chapter is devoted to the advanced analysis of Cloud charts, with an in-depth study of the Three Principles: Wave Principle, Price Target and Timespan Principle. The book is illustrated throughout with numerous examples of Cloud Chart analysis.Walk into any Japanese dealing room today and you will see that the most common charts being used are Ichimoku Kinko Clouds. This book presents the definitive explanation of these charts for the first time to a Western audience.

Far from the best.......2002-11-07
Much of the information has previously appeared elsewhere or is simply well-known by fans, so readers gain little further insight about the band from this not particularly well-written repackaging. Unlike other books on the market, there is little direct input from Anderson & Co.
The one potential strength of the book is the mass of raw facts in the reference section. It is only fair to warn that its readability is similar to that of a telephone directory, but that's the nature of the material, not the author's fault. If readers really want all these dates, etc., they'll accept the format.
What is the author's fault is that this reference information is simply wrong, far too often. Prior information seems to have been unquestioningly reproduced, errors and all, so that even after readers pick away the obvious errors, the rest can't be relied on. Newspaper ads for concerts that were later cancelled, or memories that ex-members have later admitted were mis-remembered, have gone in apparently without checking.
If you don't need to know the minutiae, the other Tull biographies are more suited to you than this one. If you do want to know every tiny detail, go for something better researched.

Bestselling author Stanley B. Lippman's Inside the C++ Model provides valuable insight into some of the internal workings of the C++ language. This book is a product of a decade of research at Bell Labs (where Lippman worked with C++ inventor Bjarne Stroustrup) and Lippman's considerable C++ expertise. Written with the experienced C++ programmer in mind, this book looks at how key language features are implemented underneath the hood and provides some guidelines when designing C++ classes. This title first examines how C++ objects work--showing the differences between C++ structures and classes. The author looks carefully at the varieties of C++ constructors, including default and copy constructors, data members, and initialization.
Subsequent sections cover inheritance, including virtual inheritance, and the inner details that will help you create effective and robust data types. The author frequently points out inefficiencies (and efficiencies) that can occur when instantiating objects. The book closes with a tour of more advanced C++ language features, such as templates, exception handling, and run-time type information. This book can help make you the resident C++ language expert at your programming shop. --Richard Dragan

Inside the Object Model: The Sensible Use of C++
David M. Papurt Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Textbook Binding Similar Items:
ASIN: 0132073668 |
Book Description
Inside the Object Model serves two key functions: it teaches object-oriented analysis and design from first principles and clearly explains C++ mechanisms that implement object-oriented concepts. Drawing on nearly ten years of programming and teaching experience, Papurt thoroughly describes the relationship between the basic principles and concerns of object modeling and the C++ programming language. Each chapter uses independent examples to illustrate key concepts described in the text and features helpful icons that clearly identify important ideas and dangerous pitfalls. With over 100 figures, hundreds of working code examples, and comparisons of coding techniques, this book rewards teh reader with a complete understanding of both C++ and the object model. Professional software analysts, designers, programmers, and advanced computer science students will benefit from reading this book.Customer Reviews:
Excellent, but abstruse. A must-read for Ada retreads.......2001-01-22
This book seeks to correlate object-oriented programming with cognitive science. To this end, an abstract Object Model is created which is language-independent. This level of power and generality invariably exacts a toll in readability. Rather than illustrating the concepts with specific examples from a programming language, the author instead conveys the essence of the concepts first and only then clarifies this abstraction with programmatic examples.
Readers familiar with Ada will recognize certain terminology and concepts. For example, "attribute" is formally defined, and we see that an Ada attribute indeed conforms to this formal definition, and that the Ada construct was aptly named. The first part of the book deals with Abstract Data Types and is extremely relevant to both Ada and C++ programmers. The second half is concerned with Object Orientation and would only be of use to Ada95 (and, of course, C++) programmers.
I had the privilege of working with Bob Meehan, a brilliant PhD in mathematics. Bob had an uncanny ability to create a mental map of a program and then translate this abstract mental map into a working program. Over the years, I have learned to achieve this using Ada, but was at a loss to transfer this facility into C++. Reading this book has given me a glimpse into the way Bob's mind worked, and I am confident that after I have read (and re-read!) this book and fully absorbed its content, any expertise that I may have acquired in Ada will be fully transferable to C++.
This book is a treasure trove, but its nuggets are not easily mined. To absorb its message, you are asked to learn a number of abstract concepts whose pertinence to programming is not at all apparent. But, as an earlier reviewer has stated, if you keep at it the light eventually dawns and you find that you have been handed the key to correct thinking--because the author has altered your cognitive processes and enabled you to perceive and function in a completely new way.
Ada actively enforced the Object-Based paradigm. Resistance was futile and the compiler ruthlessly punished infractions. C++ relies on convention and the integrity of the programmer to enforce the Object-Oriented paradigm. Other than type-checking, the C++ compiler is promiscuous. Indeed, it has to be, since it needs to be able to compile C programs. Without the broader view and greater understanding imparted by this book, strict adherence to the OO paradigm would be quite difficult. Kurt Godel pointed out that a framework can only be completely understood from a broader, more inclusive framework that encompasses the original framework. This book, if you have the tenacity, will impart that broader framework and will change the very way you perceive the world.
The best intermediate C++ book I've read to date!.......2000-06-06

Inside the Database Object Model
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849318076 |
Book Description
Databases and database system design are in the midst of a major transition to object-oriented databases. Moving from relational database architecture to an object-oriented technology is the next logical step in database design. With the properties of encapsulation, abstraction, and polymorphism, object technology systems are moving toward a unified data model that reflects the real world far more effectively than previous modeling techniques. Object-oriented development emphasizes the benefits of modular and reusable computer code as well as the benefits of modeling real-world objects. A properly designed object-oriented model also promises to be maintenance-free - all changes to data attributes and behaviors become a database task, not a programming task. Furthermore, object-oriented databases will store data, the relationships between data, and the behavior of data. Once data behaviors are added into a database management system, these "intelligent" databases will dramatically change the development of database systems.Inside the Database Object Model shows how objects are added to commerical database systems, outlining why object-oriented development is best suited for dynamic, interactive environments. The book reflects the revolutionary change in database architecture, providing plenty of usable code and other illustrative material. The book explores how object technology is being incorporated into database management systems.Although virtually every major database vendor adds objects to their database engines, their approaches vastly differ. Inside the Database Object Model:oExplores the history and architecture of database system and the evolution of object technologyoExamines the differences between relational database approach and the approach to object technologyoDescribes how major vendors approach basic object constructs, including encapsulation, abstract data types, polymorphisms, and aggregate objectsoDescribes how inheritance can be used with database objectsoOutlines how to couple data with behavior using modelsoDemonstrates how C++ applications store data in a relational databaseoIdentifies how Oracle, the world's leading relational database, extends SQL to exist with objectsoEnables readers to design and implement real-world objects using object/relational technologyMajor database vendors, such as Oracle, Informix, Sybase, and IBM, are rapidly moving into object-oriented database design. This book helps you through the transition.Customer Reviews:
Fails to convince.......2003-11-05
The book admits early on that an OODB is more brittle than a RDB, and then states that the advantage is that you can now "associate behavior" with objects in the database, but this has been possible with RDBs for awhile (admittedly not in any portable fashion). This is typical for the book. As is confusion between implementation and the underlying model. Additionally, explanations of concepts like "object" and "method" (and other terms) are rather fuzzy.
The book tries to create the appearance of balance, but it is so obviously trying to push objects that the clarity of thought and presentation suffer. In my view objects are obviously useful, but the theory for them is not worked out yet. Until then, they can fit neatly within a relational framework. Bluntly: a new database model is not required, just better implementations.
Verdict: Not Sold. Neither the argument, nor the book (I skimmed it at the local shop and saved myself the expense).
Excellent overview of database object models.......2000-10-25
This book does a wonderful job in explaining how objects work with RDBMS, and it really helped me to understand the concepts of polymorphism.
I also enjoyed the section on impedance mismatches.
Not so good?.......2000-09-28
"A database object may have a different OID each time that it is loaded onto the heap (memory)... Each time an object is created, a unique OID (object identifier) is added to the OODBMS (object-oriented database management system) identifier table. When an application references an object via its OID, the OODBMS converts the OID into a virtual memory address. This means that the object can be found quickly regardless of where it is stored, i.e., local memory, a remote hard disk, or on a device in a networked system... An OID once assigned to an object by the system, lasts the lifetime of an object."
So does the OID change when the object is loaded from a hard drive into memory, or not? What is the "lifetime" of an object: its entire existence, or only so long as it hasn't been garbage collected from memory? I find the above highly confusing! And there are many more examples like it.
The text is also highly repetitive; the acronym "SQL" and its "translation" is introduced three times on pages 45-47, each time as if it has not been talked about before.
A good copy editor would have helped, too. The use of commas where semicolons would have been less confusing is just one example.
In sum, while there are gems in here, there's a lot of overburden.
excellent text.......1998-07-26
