    Book Description

This reference work and graduate level textbook considers a wide range of models and methods for analyzing and forecasting multiple time series. The models covered include vector autoregressive, cointegrated, vector autoregressive moving average, multivariate ARCH and periodic processes as well as dynamic simultaneous equations and state space models. Least squares, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian methods are considered for estimating these models. Different procedures for model selection and model specification are treated and a wide range of tests and criteria for model checking are introduced. Causality analysis, impulse response analysis and innovation accounting are presented as tools for structural analysis.

The book is accessible to graduate students in business and economics. In addition, multiple time series courses in other fields such as statistics and engineering may be based on it. Applied researchers involved in analyzing multiple time series may benefit from the book as it provides the background and tools for their tasks. It bridges the gap to the difficult technical literature on the topic.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Welcomed Surprise.......2007-10-13

This book provides a fairly elementary view of the vast subject of time series analysis. It easy to read and the author provides lots of basic calculations. Typically, such books stay away from the cutting edge topics but not this one. It is quite complete. I highly recommend it to anyone that knows a few basic things about time series and wants to take it much further.

      Book Description

Candlesticks charts, although originating in Japan, now play an important role in technical analysis worldwide. Now, for the first time in English, this book presents the next stage of candlestick analysis - Ichimoku Kinko Hyo. Sometimes called Cloud Charts, this analysis adds moving averages to candlestick charts. But moving averages a little different from those traditionally used in the West. For trending markets, Cloud Charts add an essential tool for analysing near-term areas of support and resistance. The book covers the history of candlestick charts - explaining the context in which they developed. And then moves on to explain how in the 1930s a journalist, with the pseudonym Ichimoku Sanjin, started refining candlestick analysis by adding a series of moving averages. The book explains in detail how to construct Cloud Charts and how to interpret them. A chapter is devoted to the advanced analysis of Cloud charts, with an in-depth study of the Three Principles: Wave Principle, Price Target and Timespan Principle. The book is illustrated throughout with numerous examples of Cloud Chart analysis.Walk into any Japanese dealing room today and you will see that the most common charts being used are Ichimoku Kinko Clouds. This book presents the definitive explanation of these charts for the first time to a Western audience.

The author is a business economist and writer who saw the need for a brief, practical introduction. There's just enough here to strip away some mystique and provide common-sense direction for tasks such as helping a small businessperson use economics to do a forecast for their business plan.

                Book Description

Following German reunification in 1990, East Germany's centrally planned economy was abolished and replaced by West Germany's social market economy. Western Germany has since provided vast financial support to aid the transformation, and enable eastern Germany to catch-up with western Germany's productivity and living standards. This book evaluates the main events and their outcomes since mid-1990 and the associated policy issues. The authors assess the medium to long term growth prospects of eastern Germany and the wider implications for western Germany and Europe. The Economics of German Unification analyses the economic process of assimilating eastern Germany into the institutions and performance levels of western Germany. It includes original research as well as providing an overview of existing literature. Among the topics discussed are: - the relative backwardness of East Germany's economy - the impact of monetary and economic integration - restructuring and privatization - labor market and industrial policy, including an analysis of wage restraint and cost reduction - the prospects for eastern Germany catching-up economically with western Germany - the repercussions for German competitiveness nationally and within the wider European context This book will be welcomed by academics, researchers and undergraduates interested in the economics of transition, comparative economic systems, political economy and the European business environment.

5 out of 5 stars This is the REAL Tull book - forget the others.......2002-12-22

The author has compiled excellent information from the band and their record companies to produce the best reference guide on Jethro Tull. I'm not sure why people do not like real information that contradicts the common Tull misinformation, but the author has succeeded in taking the chance of presenting this data in a straightforward style. It's not a literary masterpiece, but this information cannot be presented any other way. After all, where else can you find out exactly when the band recorded or toured in the early days - especially since the dates and other information came from bassist Glenn Cornick's diaries? When such accurate sources like this are used in the book, you can't get any better. While one can nitpick here about accuracy without citing any examples, this is the only book that confirms concert dates by newspaper ads and reviews as well as going direct to the source. Great job.

2 out of 5 stars Far from the best.......2002-11-07

This might interest those unfamiliar with Tull, but for those who already know a bit, it's a disappointment.

Much of the information has previously appeared elsewhere or is simply well-known by fans, so readers gain little further insight about the band from this not particularly well-written repackaging. Unlike other books on the market, there is little direct input from Anderson & Co.

The one potential strength of the book is the mass of raw facts in the reference section. It is only fair to warn that its readability is similar to that of a telephone directory, but that's the nature of the material, not the author's fault. If readers really want all these dates, etc., they'll accept the format.

What is the author's fault is that this reference information is simply wrong, far too often. Prior information seems to have been unquestioningly reproduced, errors and all, so that even after readers pick away the obvious errors, the rest can't be relied on. Newspaper ads for concerts that were later cancelled, or memories that ex-members have later admitted were mis-remembered, have gone in apparently without checking.

If you don't need to know the minutiae, the other Tull biographies are more suited to you than this one. If you do want to know every tiny detail, go for something better researched.

While it may contain every factoid known about Ian and the boys, this book is so difficult to actually read as to be virtually worthless. Sentences are often incomplete, not to mention thoughts or paragraphs, and there is a complete lack of cohesion.

If completely rewritten and given a decent editing it might be worthwhile, but that hasn't happened so do yourself a favor and get the remastered version of Stand Up instead.

I was surprised that a writer that first wrote books about Manfred Mann, the Yardbirds, Frank Zappa and the Zombies would give Tull such a fair and in depth treatment. I thought this book was better that David Rees "Minstrels in the Gallery" book.
There are a lot of photos, some I've never seen before, which is saying a lot from this long time fan of the band. Unfortunately all the photos on the inside are in black and white.
There is more detail here about other members of the band (particularly John Glascock and David Palmer) than anyplace else. The orientation is toward the entire band, not just a focus on Ian Anderson. That doesn't mean it is short on information about Ian. It delivers there too.
There is a reference section in the back that is packed with more detailed information about releases, appearances etc. than you could possibly want. If the answer to a question about the history of the band can't be found here, I doubt it will be found anywhere else.

4 out of 5 stars A Must For Tull Fans.......2000-08-11

Quite an enjoyable book that I always keep close by. I was very impressed with the range. Gig list, discography, and excellent 'behind the scenes' commentary regarding each album. The lack of color photos is a bummer, but that is my only complaint. I wish someone would put a book like this together on Genesis.

                          Book Description

Modern electric kitchens, stay-at-home moms, and unprecedented American prosperity combined to make the 1950s the golden age of American cooking. Illustrated throughout with vintage color photos of finished plates, this collection of nostalgic and delicious recipes includes such favorites as barbecued chicken, sloppy joes, kebobwiches, chili dogs, bean salad, homemade biscuits and gravy, chicken casserole, juicy hamburgers, deviled eggs, chocolate cake, and of course apple pie. Also presented are anecdotes and pictures of the 1950s culture of sock-hops, suburbs, and drive-ins that inspired the popular menu choices of that era. The selected dishes recapture a spirit of simplicity and wholesomeness, and were chosen with an eye to the recipes that Mom inherited from Grandma and ones she developed herself. Most of the recipes are for oven or stove-top meals, although in some cases microwave instructions are included where appropriate.

                            Book Description

In this expanded analysis of Macbeth in performance, Bernice W. Kliman examines a number of major productions of the play on stage and screen, inviting the reader to contemplate and compare directors' and actors' choices for what is arguably Shakespeare's most compelling play. Kliman's in-depth analysis of Orson Welles's 1948 film version as well as his earlier stage production, Roman Polanski's famous film, and several different television versions from America and Britain offers an invaluable guide to the most prominent performances across a range of media. She also considers Yukio Ninagawa's staging, which provides an exciting and novel Japanese perspective on the play for Western audiences.

Bestselling author Stanley B. Lippman's Inside the C++ Model provides valuable insight into some of the internal workings of the C++ language. This book is a product of a decade of research at Bell Labs (where Lippman worked with C++ inventor Bjarne Stroustrup) and Lippman's considerable C++ expertise. Written with the experienced C++ programmer in mind, this book looks at how key language features are implemented underneath the hood and provides some guidelines when designing C++ classes.

This title first examines how C++ objects work--showing the differences between C++ structures and classes. The author looks carefully at the varieties of C++ constructors, including default and copy constructors, data members, and initialization.

Subsequent sections cover inheritance, including virtual inheritance, and the inner details that will help you create effective and robust data types. The author frequently points out inefficiencies (and efficiencies) that can occur when instantiating objects. The book closes with a tour of more advanced C++ language features, such as templates, exception handling, and run-time type information. This book can help make you the resident C++ language expert at your programming shop. --Richard Dragan

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Real Time C++ Programmers.......2006-06-07

If you use C++ in real time environments, you need this book. Real time programmers need to understand "what is going on under the covers." This is really the only book I've found that explains it in depth.

Reading this book is important if you are trying to decide whether to code in C or C++. You need to understand the overhead of C++, where it comes from and, at times, how to avoid it.

When debugging an understanding of how the compiler translates C++ code into machine language is essential. Lippmans book does not delve into code generation but it does provide a framework for understanding how the C++ object model is represented in machine language.

I'll be the first to admit that Lippman can go off on to some arcane tangents. He can spend a few pages discussing details that really have minimal effect on code execution. But I'm willing to forgive these diversions because so much of his book has contributed to my understanding of C++ and how it works.

                                5 out of 5 stars 5 stars not enough..........2006-03-10

I have thought that I had enough knowledge of C++, but after reading this book, I know I was wrong. Detailed discussion of constructor, data member, virtual table, multiple inheritance etc, there are a lot of mysterious details in C++ covered in this book. Yet this book is only 280 pages, which means there are very few redundant words seen in a lot of other tech books.

Recommend reading it with a compiler. I use Visual C to compile sample code and generate the asm file to see the real code compiler generates. It is rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Great for any serious C++ user.......2003-10-10

If you have been using C++ for a while now, and you REALLY want to know what is going on under the hood, read this book - and gain and again until you have memorized it. As a software architect, I use this book almost on a daily basis - most of the time to prove my case and to show what is really going on behind my design decisions.
The benchmarks are useful as they really show you what the difference between C, C++ is with various compilers. I have referred to those benchmarks more times than I can remember.

If you a series C++ programmer, you need this book. It's one level of abtraction above knowing how compilers work, and one level of abstraction below any advanced C++ book. It tells you what the compiler generates, and how much will is cost. Speed comparisons, and all. Object models of Inheritance, multiple inheritance, virtual inheritance, and the underlaying structure of how these things work. Great C++ book...

Lots of books contributed to the beaten path and few books shed lights on the dark inards.

It's the book, lifting the hood of your car, tearing the transmission apart, showing readers the internals of it. So that readers understand not only the appearances or riding, but also get how things works, reasons for features and limits, the facts and the dirty hands.

After finishing the book, readers in better position in driving and, if need, rebuilding a new C++.

                                Book Description

Inside the Object Model serves two key functions: it teaches object-oriented analysis and design from first principles and clearly explains C++ mechanisms that implement object-oriented concepts. Drawing on nearly ten years of programming and teaching experience, Papurt thoroughly describes the relationship between the basic principles and concerns of object modeling and the C++ programming language. Each chapter uses independent examples to illustrate key concepts described in the text and features helpful icons that clearly identify important ideas and dangerous pitfalls. With over 100 figures, hundreds of working code examples, and comparisons of coding techniques, this book rewards teh reader with a complete understanding of both C++ and the object model. Professional software analysts, designers, programmers, and advanced computer science students will benefit from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but abstruse. A must-read for Ada retreads.......2001-01-22

Unless you have a bent for philosophy, don't buy this book until you have seen at least part of Chapter 4! This is not "10 Quick Tips to Improve Your C++ Skills." It is a seminal text that attempts to alter the fundamental way you perceive the process of programming.

This book seeks to correlate object-oriented programming with cognitive science. To this end, an abstract Object Model is created which is language-independent. This level of power and generality invariably exacts a toll in readability. Rather than illustrating the concepts with specific examples from a programming language, the author instead conveys the essence of the concepts first and only then clarifies this abstraction with programmatic examples.

Readers familiar with Ada will recognize certain terminology and concepts. For example, "attribute" is formally defined, and we see that an Ada attribute indeed conforms to this formal definition, and that the Ada construct was aptly named. The first part of the book deals with Abstract Data Types and is extremely relevant to both Ada and C++ programmers. The second half is concerned with Object Orientation and would only be of use to Ada95 (and, of course, C++) programmers.

I had the privilege of working with Bob Meehan, a brilliant PhD in mathematics. Bob had an uncanny ability to create a mental map of a program and then translate this abstract mental map into a working program. Over the years, I have learned to achieve this using Ada, but was at a loss to transfer this facility into C++. Reading this book has given me a glimpse into the way Bob's mind worked, and I am confident that after I have read (and re-read!) this book and fully absorbed its content, any expertise that I may have acquired in Ada will be fully transferable to C++.

This book is a treasure trove, but its nuggets are not easily mined. To absorb its message, you are asked to learn a number of abstract concepts whose pertinence to programming is not at all apparent. But, as an earlier reviewer has stated, if you keep at it the light eventually dawns and you find that you have been handed the key to correct thinking--because the author has altered your cognitive processes and enabled you to perceive and function in a completely new way.

Ada actively enforced the Object-Based paradigm. Resistance was futile and the compiler ruthlessly punished infractions. C++ relies on convention and the integrity of the programmer to enforce the Object-Oriented paradigm. Other than type-checking, the C++ compiler is promiscuous. Indeed, it has to be, since it needs to be able to compile C programs. Without the broader view and greater understanding imparted by this book, strict adherence to the OO paradigm would be quite difficult. Kurt Godel pointed out that a framework can only be completely understood from a broader, more inclusive framework that encompasses the original framework. This book, if you have the tenacity, will impart that broader framework and will change the very way you perceive the world.

5 out of 5 stars The best intermediate C++ book I've read to date!.......2000-06-06

This book is excellent! It is what a C++ intermediate book should be. The emphasis is on teaching what the Object Model is and how to implement it using C++ language constructs "sensibly". I wish the author would bring it up to date and write an advanced version. I would also enjoy seeing the author's recommended reading list.

Thank you Dr. Papurt for this book. Please write more.

This book is a sleeper. When I started to read it I thought it irrelevant. Then a light dawned, and I began to understand a new, and correct way, of thinking about OO programming while gaining a greater knowledge of modeling and C++ programming techniques. I've read it twice and refer to it frequently for clarification and reference on some fine points. A truly useful book for active C++ programmers.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed and pragmatic presentation of OO concepts in C++.......1999-04-19

This book will delight the intermediate to experienced C++ developer. The focus is on concepts supported by the C++ language features. Short code snippets make the implementation of those concepts clear and practical. A book worth reading more than once. A book in which you can find justifications for a particular design choice. If you need to strenghthen your use of C++ on a conceptual level, if you pay attention to program in the right way, if you are a purist towards the use of C++, read this book !

                                Book Description

Databases and database system design are in the midst of a major transition to object-oriented databases. Moving from relational database architecture to an object-oriented technology is the next logical step in database design. With the properties of encapsulation, abstraction, and polymorphism, object technology systems are moving toward a unified data model that reflects the real world far more effectively than previous modeling techniques. Object-oriented development emphasizes the benefits of modular and reusable computer code as well as the benefits of modeling real-world objects. A properly designed object-oriented model also promises to be maintenance-free - all changes to data attributes and behaviors become a database task, not a programming task. Furthermore, object-oriented databases will store data, the relationships between data, and the behavior of data. Once data behaviors are added into a database management system, these "intelligent" databases will dramatically change the development of database systems.Inside the Database Object Model shows how objects are added to commerical database systems, outlining why object-oriented development is best suited for dynamic, interactive environments. The book reflects the revolutionary change in database architecture, providing plenty of usable code and other illustrative material. The book explores how object technology is being incorporated into database management systems.Although virtually every major database vendor adds objects to their database engines, their approaches vastly differ. Inside the Database Object Model:oExplores the history and architecture of database system and the evolution of object technologyoExamines the differences between relational database approach and the approach to object technologyoDescribes how major vendors approach basic object constructs, including encapsulation, abstract data types, polymorphisms, and aggregate objectsoDescribes how inheritance can be used with database objectsoOutlines how to couple data with behavior using modelsoDemonstrates how C++ applications store data in a relational databaseoIdentifies how Oracle, the world's leading relational database, extends SQL to exist with objectsoEnables readers to design and implement real-world objects using object/relational technologyMajor database vendors, such as Oracle, Informix, Sybase, and IBM, are rapidly moving into object-oriented database design. This book helps you through the transition.

This book reads like a sales pitch, but whatever advantages OODBs have are not made any clearer in this book.

The book admits early on that an OODB is more brittle than a RDB, and then states that the advantage is that you can now "associate behavior" with objects in the database, but this has been possible with RDBs for awhile (admittedly not in any portable fashion). This is typical for the book. As is confusion between implementation and the underlying model. Additionally, explanations of concepts like "object" and "method" (and other terms) are rather fuzzy.

The book tries to create the appearance of balance, but it is so obviously trying to push objects that the clarity of thought and presentation suffer. In my view objects are obviously useful, but the theory for them is not worked out yet. Until then, they can fit neatly within a relational framework. Bluntly: a new database model is not required, just better implementations.

Verdict: Not Sold. Neither the argument, nor the book (I skimmed it at the local shop and saved myself the expense).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of database object models.......2000-10-25

I have been looking for some time for a text that explains all of the nuances of OO and how it applies to databases.

This book does a wonderful job in explaining how objects work with RDBMS, and it really helped me to understand the concepts of polymorphism.

I also enjoyed the section on impedance mismatches.

1 out of 5 stars Not so good?.......2000-09-28

I find this book poorly written and inaccurate. Here's just one example of a confusion (page 48):

"A database object may have a different OID each time that it is loaded onto the heap (memory)... Each time an object is created, a unique OID (object identifier) is added to the OODBMS (object-oriented database management system) identifier table. When an application references an object via its OID, the OODBMS converts the OID into a virtual memory address. This means that the object can be found quickly regardless of where it is stored, i.e., local memory, a remote hard disk, or on a device in a networked system... An OID once assigned to an object by the system, lasts the lifetime of an object."

So does the OID change when the object is loaded from a hard drive into memory, or not? What is the "lifetime" of an object: its entire existence, or only so long as it hasn't been garbage collected from memory? I find the above highly confusing! And there are many more examples like it.

The text is also highly repetitive; the acronym "SQL" and its "translation" is introduced three times on pages 45-47, each time as if it has not been talked about before.

A good copy editor would have helped, too. The use of commas where semicolons would have been less confusing is just one example.

In sum, while there are gems in here, there's a lot of overburden.

                                5 out of 5 stars excellent text.......1998-07-26

This is by far the best book that I have seen on the details of how objects are used in relational databases. The text is well-written and easy to understand, and it greatly assisted me in understanding objects. Overall, an excellent book
