Great Overview of Franklin Covey Principles.......2004-01-26
Steve Jones is the person who gives presentation. I believe it is a recorded live process. What I liked about this alot is it covered all of the Franklin Covey time management principles in a very focussed manner (hence the title...??).
This CD series serves as an excellent refresher or introduction to the principles of managing your time. They introduce the time quadrants and explain in pretty good detail how to use paper, PDA or computer planners to manage your time. The sessions never bog down in any one area and they move from topic to topic at just about the right pace.
Obviously this CD set has some ties to the services and courses offered by Franklin Covey. They'd love it if you registered for the full course or bought a $200 planner/binder. However the course on tape/CD will standalone quite well. The speaker is clear and has a good delivery. I enjoyed this and found the time passed quickly (which doesn't always happen) as I was listening. Buy this - you won't be sorry!

Statistical Models for the Social and Behavioral Sciences: Multiple Regression and Limited-Dependent Variable Models
William H. Crown Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0275953165 |
Book Description
Multiple regression analysis has been widely used by researchers to analyze complex social problems since the 1950s. A specialization in economics, known as econometrics, developed out of a recognition that multiple regression is based upon a large number of assumptions--many of which are commonly violated in specific applications. Econometricians developed tests for violations of the regression model assumptions, as well as a variety of corrective measures for estimating regression models in the presence of many of the violations. Unfortunately, the mathematical sophistication required to understand the econometrics literature started out high and has continued to rise over the years. As a consequence, an understanding of the assumptions of the regression model, tests for violations, and corrective estimation approaches have failed to permeate widely many other policy-related disciplines such as political science, social work, public administration, and sociology. One of the key objectives of this book is to translate the results from the econometrics literature into language that policy analysts from other disciplines can understand easily. A second objective is to present a discussion of so-called limited-dependent variable models. One of the assumptions of the regression model is that the dependent variable is measured on an interval scale. But often the dependent variable of interest is discrete or categorical. Whether someone is in poverty or, whether they are working full-time, part-time, or out of the labor force, marital status--all are examples of categorical variables that might be of policy interest. Moreover, the growing availability of large-scale public use data sets containing information on individuals and families has heightened the relevance of categorical variables in policy analysis. The mathematical preparation required to understand procedures for estimating categorical models is, however, even more daunting than that for fully understanding and using the regression model. As with the theoretical development of the regression model, most presentations of categorical models, such as Logit and Probit, are to be found in econometric literature. Moreover, this literature offers little in the way of practical advice on how to estimate and interpret model results. This book is the first to present a detailed and accessible discussion of multiple regression and limited-dependent variable models in the context of policy analysis. As such it will be an invaluable resource for most scholars, researchers, and students in the social and behavioral sciences.

Since I discovered their site, shortly after they linked up with Rivals.com, I have gone into golf overdrive. Money has been no object (well, actually it has, but its just money!). These guys are bonifide equipment junkies, and the disease spreads quickly.
If you love golf, this is a book for you. None of that starchy nonsense you read each month in Golf and Golf Digest. This is as good as a pured 3 iron onto an island green! Once you go Ham & Egg, you'll never go back!

I Just Claim to Love the Game: Where Golf and Life Converge
Father Trey Nelson Manufacturer: AuthorHouse ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1420893505 |
Book Description
"In life, as in this game, when we give into the drive to do more, to do it as quickly as possible, and to cram as much into one day as we possibly can, then it would seem to me that it's time to slow down. Changes need to be made if we are going to survive, and not only survive but enjoy living. My life came to a screeching halt in June of 2004. I was just bee-boppin' along, minding my own business, doing my job, doing my job, and, oh yes, doing my job. Golf? Well, at that point in my life I had not swung a club in over a year. And, as far as my boat goes? It had been sitting under my carport, untouched for over a year, just like my golf clubs. Then one day I sat down, took a bite of my lunch, and BAM! The food stopped right at the center of my chest and refused to go down. The pain was the worst thing I had ever experienced in my entire life. A week or so later I went in for some tests, and the doctor told me that I had a golf-ball-size tumor in my esophagus, right where the esophagus meets the stomach. (Oh, the irony.) Seven months of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery later, my entire outlook on life was different. The surgery, commonly called an esophagectomy, was suppose to be very major to begin with. The fact that there were complications during surgery and the two or three days after brought me close to death's door and inflicted an incredible amount of trauma to my body. Ask anyone now, and they'll tell you that I'm a walking miracle. I am not anywhere near understanding how this experience has changed me, but I do see myself doing everything, and I mean everything much more slowly. I don't feel as rushed or preoccupied when I'm with people as I did before. I tend to speak and preach more slowly. I pray more slowly and deliberately, whether alone or with my congregation. And, yes, I play golf three times a week now, go to the range once a week, and I play slow enough to enjoy it. And all the while, I actually do see myself getting

Hitch Your Antenna to the Stars!: Early Television and Broadcast Stardom
Susan Murray Manufacturer: Routledge ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0415971314 |
Book Description
Hitch Your Antenna to the Stars is the first cultural and industrial history of early television stardom. Susan Murray argues that television stars were central to the growth and development of American broadcasting. They were used not only to promote programs and the sale of television sets and advertised consumer goods, but also to established network identities. Through profiles of well-known performers including Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Jackie Gleason, and Lucille Ball, she shows how the television industry gave birth to the idea of TV stars and established a system of star production and management notably different from the Hollywood star system of the studio era.

What Computers Still Can't Do: A Critique of Artificial Reason
Hubert L. Dreyfus Manufacturer: The MIT Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0262540673 |
Book Description
When it was first published in 1972, Hubert Dreyfus's manifesto on the inherent inability of disembodied machines to mimic higher mental functions caused an uproar in the artificial intelligence community. The world has changed since then. Today it is clear that "good old-fashioned AI," based on the idea of using symbolic representations to produce general intelligence, is in decline (although several believers still pursue its pot of gold), and the focus of the Al community has shifted to more complex models of the mind. It has also become more common for AI researchers to seek out and study philosophy. For this edition of his now classic book, Dreyfus has added a lengthy new introduction outlining these changes and assessing the paradigms of connectionism and neural networks that have transformed the field.Customer Reviews:
excellent example of accountability over expectation .......2007-09-21
History proved Dreyfus right.......2006-03-01
What AI researchers can't do on computers - yet.......2002-09-24
Basically there are two types of mistakes made by Minsky and many others:
1. believing they were getting close to understanding human thought,
2. repeatedly announcing same to the world.
The philosophy of Dreyfus in the first 300 pages is largely concerned with fallacious assumptions made by AI researchers. Finally in the last 50 pages (350 page book) he settles down and gives us some interesting concepts that should be understood if we are to seek AI at the human level. He develops the concept of "nonformal behavior" - which we humans usually learn by generalizing examples and following intuition without use of formal rules. Examples: chess at the gestalt master level, and disambiguation of broken sentences.
Dreyfus acknowledges the possible importance of neural network architectures, but dismisses them as outside the scope of his critique. He touches on the poor idea of AI trying to program a full functioning adult, and further carries out a critique of machine learning ("reinforcement learning").
The most important point he makes is that of nonformal behavior -- the non-logical almost Zen-like process that humans must go through. The irony is that we have to struggle with our nonformal thinking to do simple formal tasks such as long division; whereas the computer must struggle with its built-in hard logic to attempt nonformal tasks such as pattern recognition.
The book is for the most part quite dated, but nevertheless, it is very worthwhile reading for anyone in a serious pursuit of machine intelligence. My criticism of his style is just that. I have only a minor criticism of the intelligent content and his restrictions in scope.
A response to Jeffrey Shallit........2000-11-25
The fact is that cognitivism is hotly contested by serious thinkers in many disciplines, but Shallit's name-calling (and the comparison of cognitivism's serious critics to creation scientists) smacks of an abdication from serious engagement and argument.
Dreyfus's revised edition is a fine piece of work, worthy of serious intellectual discussion and confrontation. His many aarguments against Fodor, Chomsky, Simon and others have great merit. It is unfortunate that some folks simply close their eyes and argue from authority. But appeals to (even 'scientific') authority wear thin when left to stand alone!!
Creation science applied to artificial intelligence.......2000-11-19
Creation "scientists" often have no credentials in the field they attack; similarly, Dreyfus is a philosopher, not a computer scientist.
Creation "scientists" often use inflated rhetoric and impute dishonesty to their opponents; similarly, Dreyfus has likened AI to alchemy and made scandalous allegations against AI researchers such as Simon.
Creation "scientists" only attack evolution; they do not provide any scientific alternative; similarly, Dreyfus only attacks strong AI and does not offer any alternative line of research.
The criticisms of creation "scientists" are based on religion; Dreyfus bases his critique on philosophy. Neither critique has any scientific foundation.
Creation "scientists" continue to advance objections that have been decisively refuted, such as arguments based on the Second Law of Thermodynamics or the bogus Paluxy River tracks. Bogus claims are rarely retracted. Similarly, Dreyfus has rarely acknowledged that many of his previous claims have been refuted.
Finally, creation "scientists" have had essentially no impact on evolutionary biology, but great impact among the lay public. Similarly, Dreyfus' book is popular among non-scientists, but has had very little impact among people who actually do AI.
