Book Description
Our consumption patterns are threatening to outstrip Earth's ability to support humanity and other species. A sustainable future will require sweeping changes in public behavior.
While conventional marketing can help create public awareness, social marketing identifies and overcomes barriers to long-lasting behavior change. This ground-breaking book is the primary resource for the emerging new field of community-based social marketing, and an invaluable guide for anyone involved in designing public education programs with the goal of promoting sustainable behavior, from recycling and energy efficiency, to alternative transportation.

The Community-Based Social Marketing Primer.......2005-10-10
I don't know if McKenzie-Mohr coined the buzz-terms used in Community-based Social Marketing, but he covers them (at the introductory level) completely in this book. Case studies and personal experiences offer practical examples to the lingo commonly used in CBSM, plus plenty of articles are referenced for further reading. If you've heard about "Prompts" and "Norms" associated with CBSM and need to know what everyone's talking about, this is a great place to start.

Book Description
Governments and corporations may chip in, but around the world houshold saving is the biggest factor in national saving. To better understand why saving rates differ across countries, this volume provides the most up-to-date analyses of patterns of household saving behavior in Canada, Italy, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Each of the six chapters examines micro data sets of household saving within a particular country and summarizes statistics on patterns of saving by age, income, and other demographic factors. The authors provide age-earning profiles and analyses of the accumulation of wealth over the lifetime in a clear way that allows quick comparisons between earning, consumption, and saving in the six countries.
Designed as a companion to Public Policies and Household Saving (1994), which addresses saving policies in the G-7 nations, this volume offers detailed descriptions of saving behavior in all G-7 nations except France.

Book Description
This volume explores East Asia's macroeconomic experience in the 1980s and the economic impact of East Asia's growth on the rest of the world. The authors explore the causes of capital flows, changes in trade balances, and exchange rate fluctuations in East Asia and their effects on other countries.
These fourteen papers are organized around four themes: the overall determinants of growth and trading relations in the East Asian region; monetary policies in relation to capital controls and capital accounts; the impact of exchange rate behavior on industrial structure; and the potential for greater regional integration. The contributors examine interactions among exchange rate movements, trade balances, and capital flows; how government monetary policy affects capital flows; the effect of exchange rates on industrial structure, inventories, and prices; and the extent of regional integration in East Asia.

Book Description
The key to understanding household saving is obtaining appropriate data. Dealing with differences between rich and poor households, for example, or the old and the young, require observation of a large number of households. The focus of this study is to obtain data on many households from a number of different countries and to examine them in a coherent fashion. The hope is that through these observations we can learn about the ways policies affect savings and that other differences among savers can be controlled for, instead of being blamed on "cultural differences
* Features a consistent framework among chapters
* Reaches a harmony between measurement and analysis to compare accurately the resulting data and statistics
* Provides econometric methodology to reveal the way policies affect savings

Book Description
Analysis of consumption and saving decisions by households has always been one of the most active areas of research in economics--and with good reason. Private consumption is the most important component of aggregate demand in a capitalist economy, and explaining consumption is the key element in most macroeconomic forecasting models. To evaluate the effect of government policies invariably requires the knowledge of how they change parameters relevant for household decision making.
Understanding Saving collects eleven papers by economist Fumio Hayashi, along with two previously unpublished chapters, for a total of thirteen chapters. The monograph, which brings together Hayashi's empirical research on saving, is divided into three sections. Part I, "Liquidity Constraints", contains five studies that test the well-known implication of the Life Cycle-Permanent Income hypothesis that households shield consumption from income fluctuations. Part II, "Risk-Sharing and Altruism", contains three papers that examine the interactions between related and unrelated households predicted by the hypothesis for the US and Japanese households. The three papers in Part III, "Japanese Saving Behavior", present the author's explanation of the high saving rate in postwar Japan.

Book Description
This collection of essays, coauthored with other distinguished economists, offers new perspectives on saving, intergenerational economic ties, retirement planning, and the distribution of wealth. The book links life-cycle microeconomic behavior to important macroeconomic outcomes, including the roughly 50 percent postwar decline in America's rate of saving and its increasing wealth inequality. The book traces these outcomes to the government's five-decade-long policy of transferring, in the form of annuities, ever larger sums from young savers to old spenders. The book presents new theoretical and empirical analyses of altruism that rule out the possibility that private intergenerational transfers have offset those by the government.
While rational life-cycle behavior can explain broad economic outcomes, the book also shows that a significant minority of households fail to make coherent life-cycle saving and insurance decisions. These mistakes are compounded by reliance on conventional financial planning tools, which the book compares with Economic Security Planner (ESPlanner), a new life-cycle financial planning software program. The application of ESPlanner to U.S. data indicates that most Americans approaching retirement age are saving at much lower rates than they should be, given potential major cuts in Social Security.

Book Description
Standard equilibrium economic models focus on interdependencies. In Out of Equilibrium, Amendola and Gaffard develop a theory also dealing with interdependencies, but based on disequilibria, which take the form of feedback mechanisms over time. The way in which these disequilibria interact sequentially determines the evolution path of an economy. As a result, different processes may be associated with any kind of original shock. Whereas in equilibrium models these processes are determined by the 'fundamentals' of the economy, here the outcome is heavily influenced by the processes themselves, the sequential decisions taken, and policies followed. The model proposed in this book is a heuristic tool that makes it possible to explore these `disequilibria'. By using it, economic phenomena and policy recommendations appear entirely different, and in most cases the interpretations made are diametrically opposite to those advocated by the dominant equilibrium theory, thus giving a new perspective on the recent past of the Western economies.

Book Description
The past decade has witnessed a decline in saving throughout the developed world—the United States has the dubious distinction of leading the way. The consequences can be serious. For individuals, their own economic security and that of their families is jeopardized. For society, inadequate rates of saving have been blamed for a variety of ills—decreasing the competitive abilities of American industry, slowing capital accumulation, increasing our trade deficit, and forcing the sale of capital stock to foreign investors at bargain prices. Restoring acceptable rates of saving in the United States poses a major challenge to those who formulate national economic policy, especially since economists and policymakers alike still understand little about what motivates people to save.
In National Saving and Economic Performance, edited by B. Douglas Bernheim and John B. Shoven, that task is addressed by offering the results of new research, with recommendations for policies aimed to improve saving. Leading experts in diverse fields of economics debate the need for more accurate measurement of official saving data; examine how corporate decisions to retain or distribute earnings affect household-level consumption and saving; and investigate the effects of taxation on saving behavior, correlations between national saving and international investment over time, and the influence of economic growth on saving.
Presenting the most comprehensive and up-to-date research on saving, this volume will benefit both academic and government economists.

Book Description
Prabhat Patnaik's starting point is the fundamental question of how we can explain the resilience and durability of capitalist economies - after all, the writings of most of the giants among economists have been permeated by a sense of the transitoriness of capitalism. His argument is that the existence of a periphery of less developed countries provides a buffer that allows (relatively) crisis-free and non-inflationary growth in the capitalist core. The analysis unifies two fields that are normally separate: models of growth and stabilization policy in advanced economies and the economics of open developing economies. Consequently, Patnaik embraces both a thorough analysis of modern fiscal, monetary, and inflation policy in advanced capitalist economies and the constraints that systematically hinder development in less developed countries. Accumulation and Stability under Capitalism uses macroeconomic principles to solve problems currently addressed with microeconomic tools, establishing macroeconomics as a framework for analysing phenomena as wide-ranging as migration, imperialist systems, technological change, and labour markets. In the tradition of Keynes, Harrod and Domar, Marx, and Kalecki, it offers an alternative path to the choice-theoretic models that have appeared to be the only modern analytical path.

Customer Reviews:
This is the real deal for record collectors!!!!.......2005-07-29
The best book out there for Beatle record collectors...hands down!!!!
Something for every Beatle fan.......2003-10-14
I had heard that Bruce Spizer's books were full of images of record labels, so I wasn't sure I'd be interested in them. A friend of mine who is a serious collector told me this book was the one to start with. As it turns out, it combines lots of new information with a really great trip down memory lane. While I don't find every version of every label particularly interesting, there's a lot in this book that's REALLY great! The opening section on Beatlemania in America is an excellent overview of the subject. The chapters on each of the 45s include great images of picture sleeves and vintage Billboard ads; and Spizer describes in fascinating detail how the songs were written and recorded. It's hard to believe, but Capitol originally intended for "Act Naturally" to be the A side over "Yesterday." This was because in the early days of Beatlemania, Ringo was the most popular Beatle. (I preferred Paul.) This is just one of the great factoids that Spizer writes about and then illustrates - this one with images of Ringo on covers of a comic book and MAD magazine. The last section details how Capitol Records came to be and how the company creatively used merchandising and promotion to sell records (hard to believe the Beatles needed help!) - again, lots of pictures, e.g., actual press kits, etc. Although I skipped over some of the technical information, it's a great reference book besides being a fun read. The information is new, the stories are fascinating and the pictures really help tell the story. This book was completely worth the price - now I'm saving to buy his other ones!
who is this book for?.......2003-09-22
These reviews are very misleading... they led me to purchase this book! Once I got a copy I was beyond disappointed: this book is an extensive collection of record labels. Little more. I mean, who is this for? People who are interested in how 45s got labeled (or often mislabeled) in the 60s? When is says "Beatles story ON capitol records", it means literally.
AN AMAZING JOURNEY BACK INTO BEATLEMANIA - PART 1.......2003-07-19
This was the first Bruce Spizer book that I had bought. It is an amazingly enjoybale piece of work to behold. The thoroughness of the man is never in question and the quality of the book puts many others to shame. The label reproductions are wonderful and helpful if you've bought the original US singles. I've since determined that I've probably picked up a couple of fake Beatles 45's along with the bunch of many originals that I acquired a few years back. Buyer beware but that's luck of the draw I suppose and I'll have to search out original equivalents of those forgeries. This book serves so many useful purposes apart from being entertaining and authorative. Now experienced and would-be collectors can purchase originals better educated than before. Overall the quality is superb and Mr. Spizer's books sit in the same class as those of Mark Lewisohn's "Complete Beatles Chronicle" & "Abbey Road" books as well as the massive "Beatles Anthology" tome. While each part stands alone quite well you must buy Part 2 to complete the set as they complemment each other beautifully. I thoroughly recommend these books to any Beatles fan and lovers of Rock Music books.
Another Masterpiece!.......2000-10-13
I'll make it short and sweet-if your ANY kind of collector of beatles records, then this book is a ABSOLUTE must! As great as the VJ book that was done earlier, this is a MUST HAVE!!!

Book Description
This book examines the representation of blackness on television at the height of the southern civil rights movement and again in the aftermath of the Reagan-Bush years. In the process, it looks carefully at how television's ideological projects with respect to race have supported or conflicted with the industry's incentive to maximize profits or consolidate power.
Sasha Torres examines the complex relations between the television industry and the civil rights movement as a knot of overlapping interests. She argues that television coverage of the civil rights movement during 1955-1965 encouraged viewers to identify with black protestors and against white police, including such infamous villains as Birmingham's Bull Connor and Selma's Jim Clark. Torres then argues that television of the 1990s encouraged viewers to identify with police against putatively criminal blacks, even in its dramatizations of police brutality.
Torres's pioneering analysis makes distinctive contributions to its fields. It challenges television scholars to consider the historical centrality of race to the constitution of the medium's genres, visual conventions, and industrial structures. And it displaces the analytical focus on stereotypes that has hamstrung assessments of television's depiction of African Americans, concentrating instead on the ways in which African Americans and their political collectives have actively shaped that depiction to advance civil rights causes. This book also challenges African American studies to pay closer and better attention to television's ongoing role in the organization and disorganization of U.S. racial politics.

Ø $2,000 worth of training in a $60 book, DVD, and Web-enhanced training system. Consumers of this product will receive an unprecedented value. Instructor-led training for similar certifications averages $2,000 per class, and retail DVD training products are priced from $69 to $129. Consumers are accustomed to paying 20% to 100% more than the cost of this training system for only the DVD!
Ø Changes to the CISSP Certification pre-requisites will result in an increase in the popularity of the SSCP certification. Recently the (ISC)² increased the work experience requirement of the CISSP certification to four years from three years. This increase will result into current candidates for the CISSP to shift to the SSCP certification, as the verifiable field requirement is only one year.
Ø Syngress well-positioned in wide open playing field. The landscape of certification publishing has changed dramatically over the past month with Coriolis ceasing operations, Hungry Minds facing an uncertain future after their acquisition by John Wiley & Sons, and Syngress ending its long-term relationship with Osborne McGraw Hill in pursuit of publishing Study Guides independently. We are confident that Syngress' long history of best-selling Study Guides will continue in this new era.

Customer Reviews:
Not bad all things considered..........2005-09-13
Well, as far as test preparation books go, this is an OK resource. I would not call it stellar, but it's not drivel or a waste of time either. The information is presented fairly well, but as others have noted there is a lot of repetition and the grammatical errors and typos ARE distracting.
Bottom Line -- Will the information help you on the test? Yes. Is it all you need to pass even with experience? No. Is the information accurate? Yes, I think so.
I would suggest an SSCP candidate compliment his/her studies with the "other" book that's out there as well and all the freebies available on the Internet. Case in point, the Syngress book did not cover such topics as Continuity Planning in as great of detail as the other book. While not a reason to drop the Syngress book like a rock, if the SSCP candidate is looking to really learn the information, this is essential information to know and have to solidify the base understanding.
With respect to the DVD, I can appreciate the other reviewers' feedback. While I didn't *zing* it across the room after 15 minutes of listening, I do agree the injected humor seems forced and the author/narrator a little elitist in his approach. However, if you are not familiar with Information Security, the topics covered are indeed worth listening to via the DVD forum.
With lack of number of preparation books out there, the Syngress study guide is not bad on the whole.
Judge for Yourself.......2004-09-10
First, let me start by saying that I am one of the authors of the SSCP Study Guide and DVD Training System. I recommended the book to an associate of mine and he alerted me to the bad reviews this book was receiving, so I would like to clear things up.
As of the time I wrote this, the book received 3 1/2 stars based on 5 reviews. The first review gave 1 star with the title "Do not buy". It seems that this harsh review was posted after the reader failed the exam. At the end of the review the reader stated that "...I used this as my single point for studying and failed the exam". I can assure you that this is a good study guide for the SSCP exam, however I would NEVER use only one point of reference for ANY exam or anything else important in life.
The next 3 reviews are the EXACT SAME REVIEW giving the book 2 stars with the title "Poor Editing, Bad Reference Book". In this review it is unclear if the reader actually read the entire book or is just trying to promote another book.
All authors of the SSCP Study Guide and DVD Training System have been through and passed at least one (ISC)2 exam. These are NOT easy exams. They cover a vast amount of material that can be overwhelming. The SSCP Study Guide and DVD Training System book does however cover a vast majority of the information you will be required to know for the exam. If you have the required experience and the desire to pass this exam I would suggest the following:
- Buy this book
- Read through this book and pay attention to the subject matter covered. Many subjects in this book have entire books written about them. As you hit a subject that you don't understand, or need more in depth coverage to understand; study it separately. Then come back to this book.
- Don't take the exam until you are comfortable with all the Domains covered in this book.
The SSCP is a hard exam. Studying for it is a tedious task. This book makes that task A LOT easier. We have passed this exam based This book can and will help you pass the exam. Good luck.
Do not buy.......2004-03-18
The SSCP DVD and Training System was probably the most useless training mechanism I have ever used. The book is divided correctly, however it fails to cover important information on the exam. Some chapters are unclear, and overlap to an extent where it becomes unclear as to what domain you are actually covering.
The DVD was the biggest disappointment of all. It is a quick PowerPoint presentation with the author in a PIP window giving an overview of "key points".
Needless to say I used this as my single point for studying and FAILED the exam.
DO NOT BUY!!
Poor Editing, Bad Reference Book.......2003-06-12
I ordered this book with the intent that it would be my primary SSCP test preparation guide aside from my own education and experience. However, upon reading the first few chapters the lack of quality editing and attention to detail was apparent. In the second chapter alone there are numerous typographical and grammatical errors and at least one clearly incorrect diagram (pg. 33). Some of the wording is confusing and makes me wonder if the authors understand what they are writing about. Because of these obvious errors, I can't trust that the information this book contains is correct.
The DVD that comes with this book basically contains a series of powerpoint presentations given by the book's editor where each presentation covers a different CBK domain. These presentations do not go very deep into the domains and offer little in addition to the material covered in the book. I found the DVD to be of little use to me, which may be because of my particular learning style, but others might find it to be somewhat useful.
My advice to anyone looking for an SSCP test prep guide is to order "The SSCP Prep Guide" by Debra and Michael Isaac and pass on this book unless you absolutely must have the DVD training system. "The SSCP Prep Guide," published by John Wiley & Sons, is definitely of much better quality than this book and is also great as a reference book. Whatever you do, do not count on the "SSCP Study Guide and DVD Training System" to be your primary test preparation resource.
