Opening the pandora box..........2006-07-17

I bought this book while working on non linear optimization, i.e. when problem cannot be solved with classical linear programming. Mr. Winker has achieved a terrific job. He starts by introducing the reader to optimization heuristics with very simple problems and shows why we need new tools, especially in econometrics. He shows also that heuristics can be easily applied to a quite large set of problems.
While the book focuses only on threshold accepting, Mr. Winker devotes a large section of the book to the parametrization of this algorithm, which is crucial to obtaining good results.

Why buying this book opens the pandora box? Because this topic is really fascinating and you'll spend a lot of time in it!!

There is probably no concept other than saving for which U.S. official agencies issue annual estimates that differ by more than a third, as they have done for net household saving, or for which reputable scholars claim that the correct measure is close to ten times the officially published one. Yet despite agreement among economists and policymakers on the importance of this measure, huge inconsistencies persist.

Contributors to this volume investigate ways to improve aggregate and sectoral saving and investment estimates and analyze microdata from recent household wealth surveys. They provide analyses of National Income and Product Account (NIPA) and Flow-of-Funds measures and of saving and survey-based wealth estimates. Conceptual and methodological questions are discussed regarding long-term trends in the U.S. wealth inequality, age-wealth profiles, pensions and wealth distribution, and biases in inferences about life-cycle changes in saving and wealth. My boyfriend and I absolutely loved Do you know you Wife? as well as Do you know your Husband?. We went on vacation and complete about 20 questions a day! We had so much fun and so many laughs completing both books. I suggest these books for any couple who is comfortable with one another and who just wants to add some light fun in their lives.

I think the overall concept of this book is great but I think some of the questions are completely irrelevant, like "what is the name of her elementary school." I know the town where she grew up but does it really matter if I knew the name of the school?

This is such an impressive bible of information, with a mind-boggling array of bands and artists - a book that can serve as a great resource but one that's easy to dip in and out of - you'll find yourself flicking through the pages reliving those lost years of musical youth. This was obviously a complete labour of love, bringing together what must have been year upon year of dogged research. The text is accompanied by plenty of illustrations and memorabilia and on the inclusive audio CD is a great collection of exclusive interviews, many with artists that were still fresh on the scene. Relive the most important and influential years of musical history, day-by-day - if it's not in here, it didn't happen!

It's rare when a cultural anthropologist presents his or her work without an agenda. Yet here it is. Gimarc's astounding breadth of content and painstaking attention to detail has resulted in a book that is of the moment and could only have been accomplished by an author who lived, and loved, Punk. With thousands of bands covered, only the most pathetic critic will find the material wanting. Gimarc's mission isn't to exclude or place an academic significance to Punk, but to document its every breath. If "Punk Diary" isn't in your book collection, then the "Sex Pistols" probably aren't in your music library either.

The bottom line is this, if you love Punk or if you simply want some insight into one of the most disruptive movements in pop culture, you should read this book. Even for people who were there, there are details that some of us never knew or, as the saying goes "if your memory is too good, you probably weren't there." If you're a Mousekefan, and I mean a fan of the REAL Club, the 50s Club, you'll love this book. There's so much info, background, and lots of nice photos from behind the scenes. I'd like to have read much more about what happened to the rest of the Mouseketeers, but this is still a delight to read.

This was an excellent book! I couldn't put it down. I read the book in two days. It told about the lives of the Mousekeeters and even about some who didn't make it. I really know more about the Mousekeeters and about the show now. It was exactly what I was looking for.

Although I wasn't born yet (at the time of the premier), I did in fact grow up seeing the program on syndication, during the early 60s'. Of course, I was one of billions who had a crush on Annette (Funicello).So when I saw the book at a Barnes & Noble store, I quickly purchased it!I must say, it really brought back memories. Not only were the photos great, the personal stories relating tothe mouseketeers (on a past to present experience) was just fantastic. I hope that, maybe, another book will be published in the near future.

I got this book when in started working with oracle db using .net 2.0 beta1. It's really good book for understanding .net and oracle using odp.net and MS driver.

I put a system into production last fall with .NET and Oracle. Wish I had this book nine months ago! Mark has good advice for someone new to Oracle, but familiar with .NET. I've gone back and tweaked the system based on Mark's recommendations. I'm happy.

I would like to have given this book a 5 stars
but the title is greatly over-exagerated for Pros

This is the first time I have accessed oracle for the first
time thru visual studio and the book has helped me overcome
that fear. The examples are clear and concise in its into

Good, but still basic.......2005-01-01

From the title you would expect this to drill into some deep Oracle technical issues. It doesn't do that. It's a fairly screenshot intensive walkthrough of basic Oracle use in .NET. It starts with connectivity, information retrieval and manipulation. Then exception handling, stored procedures and large object operations. There is some coverage of performance issues.

There is a lot of good content here. It's well written and organized. The screenshots aren't overwhelming and the sample code is good. A good book on Oracle use in .NET, even if it is a little mis-titled.
