The last fifteen or twenty years have been marked by fundamental advances in the sources of complex behavior in micro- and macro-economics, in the practical and methodological implications of such behavior, and in the methods and tools appropriate to cope with them. Much of these developments have been driven by the recognition and acceptance by economists of approaches initiated in other fields - such as non-linear dynamics, statistical physics, network theory, biology, computer science, and the use of computational methods as problem-solving tools - giving rise to important and innovative impulses to economic thinking.

The sixteen papers in this book -- the fourteenth volume in the series International Symposia in Economic Theory and Econometrics - reflect from various perspectives this recent evolution. They are the outgrow from a selection of communications presented at the COMPLEXITY2000 workshop held in Aix en Provence, France, 4-6 May 2000 - a workshop that brought together, from twenty-two nations, almost seventy economists, mathematicians, biologists and physicists interested in complex phenomena. All papers were strictly refereed in the intended tradition of the series: to provide journal quality collections of research papers of unusual importance in areas of currently highly visible activity within the economics profession.

With its selection of articles, the book presents an overview of advanced contributions to complexity in economics and social system, such as chaotic dynamics and multiple equilibria, agent-based models, applications of genetic algorithms, non-equilibrium macro-dynamics, information transmission, learning mechanisms. A lot of research but the ultimate goal seems to be character assassination, and a totally spurious association with Ian Paisley ( I suppose that helps book sales to the prurient public). Van has been exemplary in avoiding getting embroiled in the Troubles and this seems to be a belated effort to drag him into the mire.

The author's judgement of Van's output seems equally flawed - Warm Love is dismissed whereas some of the more turgid later stuff is praised. There is also far too much repetition.

Who is Johnny Rogan?

Disappointed Van Fan!.......2006-03-08

Ok, this is definitely a bias opinion from a Van fan. I love Van's music and tried to find a good biography. Since this was a recently new book that came out and it had 400+ pages of details I just assumed that I would be equally interested as any fan would. Rogan's vocabulary is quite nicely written for anyone who can appreciate literature however I found it to be a difficult read. And I do read a good amount of books. Unfortunately the book has way more detail about what was going on at the time than Van himself. It seems like Rogan likes to set the scene but ends up going on tangents that feel like you wasted your time and hard earned money. Unfortunately I didn't get past the first few chapters as the details got too unbearably dull for me.

A must for fans.......2005-11-09

This is by no means a profound biography, and its focus is clearly the man, not the music. I found it very entertaining, though, taken with a grain of salt, and can't imagine that the detail about the pop music business and Ireland in the 60s and 70s wouldn't be of interest to a fan. The book goes into great detail about Van's boorish, antisocial behaviour and his hilarious tendency to think he's the next W.B. Yeats. If you
see Van as a hero, this is going to hurt your feelings. If you can take this is stride I don't see why it should spoil your admiration for his music. Lots of interesting detail about a flawed, but fascinating musician.

Van and Ian Paisly are similar?.......2005-10-06

I'm in the US, and have not kept up with the various Van scandals that seem to have made the news in the last 15 years. Johnny Rogan certainly has, and seems to like to repeat media gossip. He also has much to say about Northern Ireland during the period when Van was far away and ignoring the politics as far as I can tell. Rogan really wants to connect Van and Ian Paisly, mostly because they lived in more or less the same area in the 60s. I don't really see the point in this, and can't follow Rogan's reasoning.
Rogan has made effort to reveal more of the 60s and 70s music business scene that is typically seen in music bios, and I appreciate that. However, he does not discuss the music, its influences and techniques as I would like, and Rogan and I seem to have very different musical tastes. I bought this book because I read a lot of Van biographies, but I recommend this only for the fanatic, or someone willing to spend money on a book you will throw down in annoyance many times.

Looks in completely the wrong direction.......2005-10-05

On the face of it, Van Morrison appears to present a paradox: he's written and performed some of the most sublime and genuinely great music of the past 40 years. If you've never seen a Van Morrison concert when the man himself is on form - well, you've really missed something very special. On the other hand (and I can only quote others on this since I've obviously never met or spoken to the man) - he's supposedly an extremely difficult and downright unfriendly individual.

As has been the case with Johnny Rogan's other biographies, an incredible amount of research has gone into this book. The problem is that the research is largely aimed at providing the reader with great swathes of evidence of VM's fractious nature as well as using the opportunity to lay out sections of his past as if they should viewed as skeletons from his closet (e.g. Scientology).

So, are all the sordid facts interesting? Well, no, not really. After a while you just accept that the Author had a agenda of his own and though the pearls of poison continue to appear nothing really surprises. The book is useful as it does provide a reasonable timeline of Van Morrison's career (hence an additional star) but even then it moves far too quickly through key phases of his career.

The opportunity was missed. The book should have answered the question "how can someone so obtuse and difficult create something so magical?"

Sadly, it's muck-raking. No more, no less. Well written, though.

The Abbey at the Queens The Interregnum Years 1951-1966 records a difficult period in the history of Irelands National Theatre, a history of successes, failures, and struggles from the burning of the old Abbey to the opening of the new theatre. These years I have called the Interregnum.

Recent studies of particular areas during the Civil War have shown how kinship and social and educational ties, far from reinforcing county isolationism, frequently drew inhabitants into a far wider network and divided existing loyalties. Gloucestershire and the English Civil War.......2000-06-23

This is a highly specialised work of academic history, so it isn't for everyone but the style is much fresher than the usual and the author, Andrew Warmington's obvious affection for the area means that it should appeal to anyone interested in the history, topography and popular culture of Gloucestershire.

Refreshingly, too, to my mind,he doesn't bother to hide his bias; he makes it perfectly clear that the Parliamentarian side was that of the vast majority of the people and that the Royalists - especially Charles I himself - were worthless people.

As well as covering some familiar ground in terms of seeing the tumultuous years of the Civil War and Commonwealth period through the eyes of a local community, the author extends his coverage to the Restoration period.

Warmington also has a great eye for the human dimension, and there are plenty of characters and local flavour in the book, from the insults tht gentry hurled at each other when a pre-election compact broke down in 1640 to the football match that was to be the cue for an anti-Rump riot in Bristol in 1660.

The amateur psychologist will probably enjoy his account of how the Civil War government of Gloucester struggled to cope with the political fighting caused by the demented paranoia of Colonel Massey, the city's governor.

A lifesaver.......2003-05-30

I manage nearly 50 software engineers at a fortune 500 company. Once I got this book, I realized that our engineer contracts are extremely weak given the volatile nature of many software developers (something I've personally witnessed), and if anything ever went wrong under our existing terms, we'd be in a very litigious situation. Thanks to the information presented here, however, I've been able to outline a strategy for our legal department to consider for a revised draft that could potentially save our company millions of dollars and countless manhours of paperwork in averted lawsuits and other such nightmares. Take it from me-- most engineering managers and entrepreneurs are not as well versed in legal issues as they should be. This book was a huge eye-opener and I recommend it highly.

Finally, somone that knows something about law!.......2003-05-29

This is a great book for anyone that wants to know the actual details of media related law and intellectual property, but doesn't have the time to get a law degree. I own a small software and web company and we are constantly paying attorneys to review "potential" copyright, patent, and other infringements. I have wasted so much time paying for legal advice, but it seems like these experts never can give me a straight answer. I have been looking for a book that can be understood by a non-attorney, but that has explicit examples of copyright law, trademarks, what is legal, and what is not. After reading this book, I feel 100x more confident now, and I immediately no longer need legal advice in many areas, I KNOW the law in the areas, and can be confident that my decisions are reasonable. I highly recommend this book to any executive or business person that is in the intellectual property loop, but is sick of not understanding what is what.
