Manufacturer: Elsevier Science ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0444514333 |
Book Description
The last fifteen or twenty years have been marked by fundamental advances in the sources of complex behavior in micro- and macro-economics, in the practical and methodological implications of such behavior, and in the methods and tools appropriate to cope with them. Much of these developments have been driven by the recognition and acceptance by economists of approaches initiated in other fields - such as non-linear dynamics, statistical physics, network theory, biology, computer science, and the use of computational methods as problem-solving tools - giving rise to important and innovative impulses to economic thinking.

The Abbey at the Queen's: The Interregnum Years 1951 - 1966
Michael O'Neill Manufacturer: Borealis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0888878486 |
Book Description
The Abbey at the Queens The Interregnum Years 1951-1966 records a difficult period in the history of Irelands National Theatre, a history of successes, failures, and struggles from the burning of the old Abbey to the opening of the new theatre. These years I have called the Interregnum. The book begins with an overview of the significant events and changes in Ireland during most of the nineteenth century, an evolution aimed at helping to put in perspective key developments in Irish life that directly and indirectly influenced the imaginations and singular creative talents of dramatists. It discusses the kind of theatre the Queens was as Irelands National Theatre in the nineteenth century, and how it paved the way for the emergence of the Abbey as Irelands National Theatre designate, supported by the Irish Government. A chapter discusses all the original plays both in English and Irish presented during the Interregnum, treated as reflections of how the writers craft illuminates the time they live in. A related chapter lists all productions old and new to show the evolution of the Abbey and its theatrical tastes over the past century. The programmes of all first productions in English and Irish during the Interregnum provide a link with Lennox Robinsons of! ficial history, Irelands Abbey Theatre (1951), and serve as an aide memoire of authors, actors, producers, and scene designers who contributed to the staging of these dramasin short, the activities of the theatre in full spate.
The biographical sketches focus on those playwrights who contributed new works during the Interregnum, and personal observations by some of the authors about their work. The appendices offer summaries of the plays of the period, and embody information going back to the earliest years of the Abbeys theatrical life.

Civil War, Interregnum and Restoration in Gloucestershire, 1640-1672 (Royal Historical Society Studies in History New Series)
A.R. Warmington Manufacturer: Royal Historical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0861932366 |
Book Description
Recent studies of particular areas during the Civil War have shown how kinship and social and educational ties, far from reinforcing county isolationism, frequently drew inhabitants into a far wider network and divided existing loyalties. Following this approach, Dr Warmington's examination of the history of Gloucestershire during the period begins with the descent into war between 1640 and 1642, showing how the two sides formed and why the Parliamentarians had the more durable war machine. He goes on to consider the anarchic situation between 1645 and 1649 and the series of new experiments in government which followed until 1660, undertaken by an almost entirely new governing group of minor gentlemen, elevated through military service to the regime and by religious affiliations. The attempted rebellion of 1659 is examined in detail, and the book concludes with a look at the Restoration of the Stuart dynasty, the Anglican Church, and the sons of the pre-war county ruling elite, exploring how the new regime compared with its Cromwellian predecessors.ANDREW WARMINGTONwas formerly senior research assistant in history at the University of Durham, following a First Class degree from York and a D.Phil. from St Peter's College, Oxford. He is now a freelance research analyst.Customer Reviews:
Gloucestershire and the English Civil War.......2000-06-23
Refreshingly, too, to my mind,he doesn't bother to hide his bias; he makes it perfectly clear that the Parliamentarian side was that of the vast majority of the people and that the Royalists - especially Charles I himself - were worthless people.
As well as covering some familiar ground in terms of seeing the tumultuous years of the Civil War and Commonwealth period through the eyes of a local community, the author extends his coverage to the Restoration period.
Warmington also has a great eye for the human dimension, and there are plenty of characters and local flavour in the book, from the insults tht gentry hurled at each other when a pre-election compact broke down in 1640 to the football match that was to be the cue for an anti-Rump riot in Bristol in 1660.
The amateur psychologist will probably enjoy his account of how the Civil War government of Gloucester struggled to cope with the political fighting caused by the demented paranoia of Colonel Massey, the city's governor.
This is also a solid work of historical research in a county with relatively poor documentation; the author has clearly gutted the state papers, family records and printed newssheets of the day for local references and has managed to pull together a strong narrative of events throughout the 32 years of coverage.

It focuses on the years from Charles I 's execution in 1649 to Cromwell 's own death in 1658.The articles explore key themes, such as Cromwell 's complex personality, beliefs and motives; the nature of his role and influence during the Interregnum; his relationships with Parliaments, the Army and the Council; and the impact of the Commonwealth and Protectorate on British politics and society. They represent the diversity of approaches and perspectives that historians have brought to these issues, but all of them explore why Cromwell never achieved enduring political stability.
