Book Description
Contributors to Human Rights, Labor Rights, and International Trade provide the first comprehensive view of labor rights in the international trade system and the avenues open to worker rights claims in the global economy under international human rights instruments, U.S. trade laws, free trade agreements, labor rights litigation, and corporate codes of conduct. They address worker rights from the standpoints of human rights concerns, trade and development policy, and labor law principles. Developments in the global economy - including the European Union and the ILO; NAFTA; GATT and the new WTO; and the Japanese organization of the Pacific Rim - create issues regarding migration patterns, resource conservation and environmental protection, foreign policy, and labor. Combining the rarefied atmosphere of human rights theory with the nitty-gritty details of worker organizing, this book addresses the issue of distinguishing which worker and trade union rights are fundamental human rights and which are really assertions of privileges or claims for benefits.

From the supplier: Workers employed in factories located in Sri Lanka's free trade zones are exploited. They receive low pay and are pressured to work overtime. In addition, they are exposed to unsafe and difficult working conditions. These workers are also subject to police violence and intimidation if they stage protests against their abusive employers. Several organizations, such as Kalape Api and Women's Centre are providing support to improve the workers' plight.

save your money, look elsewhere for labor history & analysis.......2004-11-30
I noticed that this book - an extremely lame, repititive, crushingly boring collection of speeches by a guy named Jack Barnes, the ringleader of a tiny 'socialist' party that, once upon a time, had some relevance in the U.S. - has been praised by several 'reviewers' on Amazon. Each of these reviewers, though, are apparently members of Barnes' silly little outfit, because each of them have praised other books published by Pathfinder, the publisher for the Socialist Workers Party. So for anyone looking for insightful commentary and analysis on labor history and issues, please look elsewhere (labor notes, labourstart, David Bacon, Kim Moody, etc.).
Working people really can change the world...a guide.......2002-03-06
You want to fight but your union's too weak and buddy-buddy with management...everyone sits in their own language groupings in the cafeteria - will people ever get together?...how can we get out of the mess that lay-offs and soaring cutbacks in social services are making of our lives? This book is a fantastic handbook for those of us who want to figure out what step to take next. It isn't an easy recipe for bandaids. It lays out that we have to be worldly-wise strategists who understand that unity forged through struggle is key. The prize: taking political power like working people did in Cuba over 40 years ago. We have to use the tools we have - the unions, for example, exasperating though they may be -- to reach each other and create a political party, a real fighting communist party, that can lead us to help transform all of society. Thought-provoking and concrete. A real treat.
Fighters For REAL Social Change Need This Book !.......2001-10-16
The face of the social class that produces the wealth changed forever in the US thanks to the social movements of the 1960s and 1970s.We work side by side : Black and white and Latino, etc., men and women, immigrant and 'native-born.' This is what scares the daylights out of the big-boss class - the multimillionaire and billionaire families- about affirmative action and other such gains. We spend so much time working, and sweating, and facing the same enemy side by side that stereotypes collapse. If we fight back, we have to be brothers and sisters in action to win. That's why these gains are under such fierce attack.
This is one subject of this book.Another is the birth and survival - yes, even today ! -of the Vietnam Syndrome. Working people know the US government lies as a habit. In our millions we will relearn in all our generations that this government in war or 'peace' serves the superrich. We will be forced to resist, yes, this war, and the next one.Millions will cast off the blinders this society tries to force on us.In the process we will transform our unions into fighting machines for all working people. And change ourselves.
This book is based on the experience of revolutionary socialist industrial workers active in their unions, and in social movements, and against the Empire's wars from the late 70s into the 90s.Any fighter for serious social change today and tommorow : you need to read this book !
A necessary book for any revolutionary!!!.......1999-04-13
"This is a handbook for the generations of workers coming into the factories, mines, and mills - workers who will react to the uncertain life, ceaseless turmoil, and brutality that will accompany the arrival of the twenty-first century. It is a handbook for young people who, in growing numbers, are repelled by the racism, women's inequality, and other intolerable social relations reproduced daily by capitalism on a world scale. It is a book for fighters who sense that this social system, if not replaced, will lead to economic devastation, fascist tyranny, and world war. Above all, it aims to show why only the working class can lead humanity out of the social crisis endemic to capitalism in its decline. It shows how millions of workers, as political resistance grows, will revolutionize themselves, their unions, and all of society" (from the back cover).
An excellent handbook for socialists........1997-11-15
"Changing Face" is a good explanation of what communists should be doing in todays trade unions. It explains the role of socialism and industry, our roots as militant workers in the unions, and the way modern industry can be used to build the communist movement.

The International Labour Law Reports is a series of annual publications of labour law judgements by the highest courts in a number of jurisdictions. ILLR is intended primarily for the use of judges, labour law practitioners, industrial relations specialists and students who need or desire ready access to authoritative information of a comparative nature on problems arising in the field of labour law and industrial relations.
Each judgement reprinted in ILLR is accompanied by Headnotes and in practically all cases by an Annotation which sets forth, among other things, the legal issues involved, the basic facts of the case (if not included in the judgement itself), the relevant statutory provisions and judicial precedents, the labour law and industrial relations context in which the case arose and the significance of the judgement in the development of the law. As a rule, judgements are printed in extenso; editorial discretion has been relied upon to delete or to summarize portions of judgements that are purely technical or only of marginal interest.

Book Description
Are efforts to protect workers' rights compatible with the forces of globalization? How can minimum standards designed to protect labor rights be implemented in a world in which national labor law is more and more at the mercy of international forces beyond its control? The contributors to
this volume argue that international agreements and institutions are of central importance if labor rights are to be protected in a globalized economy, exploring some of the options that are open to governments, civil society, and the labor movement in the years ahead.

Book Description
The more generous social welfare system in Europe is one of the most important differences between the European and the US society. Defenders of the European welfare state argue that it improves social cohesion and prevents crime. On the other hand, the US economy is performing quite well such that crime rates might come down due to better legal income opportunities. This book takes this trade-off as a point of departure and contributes to a better interdisciplinary understanding of the interactions between crime, economic performance and social exclusion. It evaluates the existing economic and criminological research and provides innovative empirical investigations on the basis of international panel data sets from different levels of regional aggregation. Among other aspects, results clearly reveal the crime reducing potential of intact families and the link beween crime and labour market. A special focus is on estimating the consequences of crime, a topic rarely analysed in literature.

Book Description
The Soddit, The McAtrix Derided, and the aptly titled The Sellamillion:
The parodies are hilarious, but the numbers are serious, with millions of copies sold. And now, in our very own time and galaxy, Star Wars finally gets its comeuppance-just in time to coincide with the release of the 6th and final film. The force is with us!
This is a satire well and truly earned: with the last chapters in the Star Wars' saga reaching new lows, the movies that have dominated popular culture for more than three decades deserve a little tweaking. Oh, sure, a long time ago, in what seems like a galaxy far, far away, there was a very good and thoroughly entertaining SF film. But that's long gone. So here it comes, a six-part mock-epic that begins in the middle of the action, pits good against evil, and features hairy co-pilots, green gurus, bizarre hairdos, steel bras, and campy robots.
In addition to his bestselling parodies, Adam Roberts has written a SF novel, Salt, which was nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, as well as a number of academic works.
Customer Reviews:
very funny.......2006-03-02
A.R.R.R. Roberts always writes funny parodies, but this one is especually good. and as always, its very clever without being too crude.

Book Description
". . . extraordinarily far-reaching. . . . highly accessible."
-Notes
"No one has written this way about music in a long, long time. Lucid, insightful, with real spiritual, political, intellectual, and emotional grasp of the whole picture. A book about why music matters, and how, and to whom."
-Dave Marsh, author of Louie, Louie and Born to Run: The Bruce Springsteen Story
"This book is urgently needed: a comprehensive look at the various forms of black popular music, both as music and as seen in a larger social context. No one can do this better than Craig Werner."
-Henry Louis Gates, Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities, Harvard University
"[Werner has] mastered the extremely difficult art of writing about music as both an aesthetic and social force that conveys, implies, symbolizes, and represents ideas as well as emotion, but without reducing its complexities and ambiguities to merely didactic categories."
-African American Review
A Change Is Gonna Come is the story of more than four decades of enormously influential black music, from the hopeful, angry refrains of the Freedom movement, to the slick pop of Motown; from the disco inferno to the Million Man March; from Woodstock's "Summer of Love" to the war in Vietnam and the race riots that inspired Marvin Gaye to write "What's Going On."
Originally published in 1998, A Change Is Gonna Come drew the attention of scholars and general readers alike. This new edition, featuring four new and updated chapters, will reintroduce Werner's seminal study of black music to a new generation of readers.
Craig Werner is Professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin, and author of many books, including Playing the Changes: From Afro-Modernism to the Jazz Impulse and Up Around the Bend: An Oral History of Creedence Clearwater Revival. His most recent book is Higher Ground: Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, and the Rise and Fall of American Soul.
Customer Reviews:
Truly insightful on the culture-theft wars.......2006-08-30
A Change is Gonna Come is a landmark book in the history of the rock/race conversation, because Werner - a white professor of Afro-American studies - has a deeper understanding of the meaning of whiteness than any other rock historian I've seen. It makes a huge difference that Werner is both an anti-racist, and is comfortable in his own skin - this comfort allows him to navigate the culture-theft accusations and counter-accusations without needing to pick sides.
An ideal nostalgic documentation of the history of African-American influence upon their own ethnic musical traditions.......2006-04-03
A newly revised, expanded, and updated edition, A Change Is Gonna Come: Music, Race, And The Soul Of America by Craig Werner (Professor of Afro-American Studies at the University of Wisconsin) is an informative and "reader friendly" survey of forty years worth of music and events in African-American history which played such an influential role in shaping the path of the American popular culture. Professor Werner manages to present an engaging and knowledgeable perspective of Afro-American music's intimate connection with its composers, performers, and audiences, while carving a vivid picture of the political credit it deserves. Very strongly recommended for Black Studies, Music History, and American Popular Culture library collections, A Change Is Gonna Come is both the perfect scholarly reference and an ideal nostalgic documentation of the history of African-American influence upon their own ethnic musical traditions.
A disappointment.......2005-08-27
Well, I know I'm in the minority here. But a real history of the connection between music and race in America is something that it desperately needed. One might expect an academic historian to have provided that. But this book is NOT a good history - it's highly impressionistic and rather anecdotal and full of ideas that aren't exactly explained. It jumps around from chapter to chapter making much of the impressions that the author has about the 'hidden' messages within songs, but I'm afraid that he states rather than argues or proves his case. I hope someone out there DOES write the book that's needed. In the meantime this one is interesting if the style doesn't bother you too much.
WELL WRITTEN.......2001-12-05
I read "A Change is Gonna Come" last year and found it be a very informative, well written, history of the relationship between soul/Black music and the Civil Rights/Black Power movement. Werner treats the music like a literary tradition--showing how artists from Sam Cooke, to Aretha Franklin, to rapper KRS-One both were influenced by and helped shape the struggles of social justice. Aretha's fameous signature song "Respect," for example, was about the Black female call for respect from men, but also the Black movement's call for respect by a White racist power structure. Likewise, by the Reagan era, Public Enemy got it just right when they produced "Welcome to the Terrodome," and "Don't Believe the Hype," while N.W.A produced "Fuck the Police"--fameous *speeches* for a repressive era. Werner shows how the music never stops. That while there's always music that makes artists a quick rich buck, there's also serious music that seeks to document and comment on what's happening in the world. I look forward to rereading it again and listening to many of the popular songs he writes about.
Train I ride..........2000-12-13
Marvellous stuff. Possibly the best book to be written about music and popular culture for quite some time. Determinedly in the tradition of Greil Marcus & Peter Guralnick, the book re-writes the now well-told tale of "rock" music's history, from what is perhaps the only true perspective - that is, race. Read it.

Book Description
In Cultures of Forgery, leading literary studies and cultural studies scholars examine the double meaning of the word "forge"-to create or to form, on the one hand, and to make falsely, on the other. Eleven essays take on a broad range of topics, including counterfeit Hitler diaries, the creation of national identity in Bohemia, and Jean-Etienne Liotard's fabricated "Turkish" identity. Each asks how forgery-a process at times deceptive, at times creative-has shaped modern culture and challenged our understandings of authorship and value.

Diamond in the Rough!!!!.......2005-08-13
Great book!
Very complete overview and many snippets of experience.
I only called it "in the Rough" because of the paper & binding... it isn't shiney, and no color prints, but the info is the Diamond, and worth much more. As they say, "Don't judge a book by its cover"!
Molly's books are always worth keeping. She delivers. =)

Preview in person.......2004-11-18
To be certain there are some invaluable hints in this book. But since the items covered are just spots of information from here and there around the landscape of web and design standards you need to check this book out in person to make sure you are getting your moneys worth. In particular I liked the material on CSS layout, but I was disappointed with coverage of basic topics like web safe colors, which requires a more in-depth discussion than the few paragraphs presented. Worth the look, but be sure to look before you buy.
Good reference to keep at hand.......2004-11-02
This is one of the few web books that has great breadth and gives sufficient depth to help not only the novice, but a seasoned web developer. This book has been quite helpful for the web team I am on to understand what current best practices are and how we get to this level.
There are so many poorly developed sites on the web it is great to have a book at hand to point to when needing to explain how to do it right. Molly's book is one of the quickest ways to start building web sites right
Easier long term maintenance.......2004-09-24
If you have already used HTML to make some web pages, then this book might be of value. That is, if you plan on adding more pages or perhaps you want to maintain the website hosting these pages? The book talks about how to handle this next level of complexity. The author does not bog you down in the fine details of HTML syntax. Instead, she gives many suggestions ["secrets"] on making a logical arrangement of content. Like giving simple, intuitive names to the directory hierarchy and files. So that users can traverse your website easily.
Typically, most of the suggestions are of this style. The payoff is often easier long term maintenance. Like her ideas on effectively using CSS and XHTML. Again, like with HTML itself, you need some minimal prior acquaintance with these packages, to take advantage of this book.
Concise and thorough reading for any web designer.......2004-07-31
I'm always hungry for new knowledge as a web designer, looking for that one trick to make my site either faster, easier to understand, accessible, and better. Sure, you could scour the web for weeks, looking for all the little tips and tricks that makes a good website great, or you can get this book and discover it all easily. All from a person who has, for many years, made the web a better place.
Molly's attention to detail, her teaching methods, and approach to giving these secrets and tips makes is utterly easy to digest and remember. By all means, this book is a treasure trove of knowledge that belongs in every web designer's personal collection.
