Customer Reviews:
Nice book but not for beginner.......2007-10-05
This book help you think and has good excercise to improve your solidworks skills. It a good book to used when taking a class. I would not recommend to use if you never used solidworks before and are not in a class
Excellent book!.......2007-09-28
I've used CAD programs for about 17 years starting with Autocad, and this is by far the best software book I've used. It's readable, concise, well organized, and user friendly. The author is very familiar with the program and shares his opinions in a useful manner. I'm hoping that Mr. Murray has a new revision to keep up with the SolidWorks releases.
Inside Solidworks by David Murray.......2007-09-26
As a SolidWorks user with over 8,000 hours experience and a Sr. Mechanical/Structural designer this book helps you through some of the hurdels you encounter. As a designer I want to spend my time designing not trying to figure out the software and do what I want it to do. Solidworks is easy to use but sometimes you need some reference material to describe a particular problem. This book does just that. It has a good overall approach to almost every problem. It is not at a fine detail level because there is too much material to cover but I would highly recommend this book for anyone that needs help problem solving the software intent. I had puchased earlier versions of this book and this latest printing did not disappoint me.
Good Reference with complete coverage.......2007-03-18
Overall coverage of this book is better than most (SolidWorks for Dummies and Sham Tickoo's books). Coverage includes Sheetmetal, surfacing and SW 2006 material. Only negative, the book has few example problems. If your looking for a lot of example problems, I would recomment the Sham Tickoo books.
The best so far.......2007-03-06
This is the best of the Solidworks books I have used. My only major complaint with the book is that it will not sit flat on the desk while I am using it! A minor issue is that future lessons often depend on files created in earlier lessons. Be sure to save your earlier work!

Book Description
Motor vehicles are prominent among the flows of exports and/or imports for Canada, Germany, Japan, and the United States, and these trade flows are heavily influenced by the basic relative competitiveness of the production processes for automotive manufacturing. In this book the authors analyze the factors that contributed to the comparative cost competitiviness of the four countries' auto industries over the period 1961-1984 and disentangle the factors contributing to the Japanese cost and efficiency advantages. The authors provide estimates of comparative costs of automobile production (both short-run and long-run) and the sources of these cost differences, based on the econometric cost function methodology. An innovation is the careful treatment of capacity utilization, one of the most important sources of short-run cost and efficiency differences. This methodology is also used effectively in an analysis of the Canada-U.S. Auto Pact, a unique experiment in trade liberalization. Previous estimates of cost and efficiency differences using the plant inspection and comparison of company financial reports methodologies are also evaluated.
Book Description
Equilibrium Versus Understanding argues that neo-classical theory is incapable of explaining or understanding people's conduct. As a result it is unsuitable for explaining decisions and choices. Mark Addleson asserts that a different sort of economic theory is required if economists are to understand how the world works. He proposes a hermeneutic theory.
Addleson discusses what a hermeneutic theory entails, why it is a suitable framework for explaining people's conduct, how it differs from orthodox economics and how it enlarges the scope of economics. The discussion of methodologies throughout the book provides a novel critique of equilibrium thoery and insight into the nature of business decisions and uncertainty, the issue of prediction, and the use of mathmatics in economics.
Customer Reviews:
Interpret and understand...it is not all graphs..........1997-07-19
This work is only for the bloodthirsty economist (or economics student). Addleson presses for a paradigm shift in understanding and deciphering peoples' motives behind economic decisions. Ultimately, economics remains a social science, and cannot be boxed in by lines and equations.
The book reaches me in the same way that Wheatley's New Science work depicts organizational planning. Addleson presents a fundamentally radical view of economics (as emphasized by the Austrian school). He begs us to consider interpreting the social actions of each individual or firm in assessing economic change.
If you are looking for a way out of the maze, this book will not necessarily get you out, but it will show you some other paths. Hopefully, you'll know longer be the blind mouse when you are finished
Book Description
The Cure are one of the most respected and well-loved of rock's survivors, traceable right back to punk's fabled Bromley Contingent. In Between Days is the first book to make sense of a uniquely versatile band who are far more than the goth band, documenting their development from the new wave of 1979's Boys Don't Cry, the existential rock of Seventeen Seconds, the joyous pop of Wish, the dark beauty of Disintegration-right up to the majesty of Bloodflowers and 2004's The Cure, consecutive twenty-first-century masterpieces.
In Between Days also studies Robert Smith's brilliant interweaving of literary influences, from Mervyn Peake and Coleridge to Albert Camus and Jean Cocteau, to make a fascinating album-by-album, track-by-track study.
Customer Reviews:
useless, endless, mindless.......2005-09-28
I was SO excited when I saw this book announced on a website devoted to the Cure. I ordered it from Amazon UK and paid WAY TOO much for it. This Armchair Guide to the Cure just wasn't what I expected. I wanted something along the lines of a sequel to their Ten Imaginary Years book that came out in 1986. New interviews, rare photos, period reviews, etc. Something that is entertaining and that would excite the fan in me. What I got was a book that is unbelievably dry and full of mind-numbing minutae. Of COURSE I read it but it took a while and was something of a chore. There is hardly anything I read here that I haven't already seen before, save for the new quips from Lol Tolhurst, who hasn't been a member of the Cure in over 15 years. Bottom line - this fact-filled paperback gives you more useless information than you can shake a stick at ( endless lists of Peel Sessions, Demo Sessions, TV and Radio appearances etc etc ) but nothing really insightful or entertaining. This is for serious fans and completists who feel the need to own everything that has the bands name on it ( I suppose, people like me .) A final side note to the author Dave Thompson ( whom I doubt will ever read this anyway ) if you are going to write such a history lesson of a book, please check your facts. The Banshees' drummer who quit the band a few dates into the UK tour in 1979 was Kenny Morris, not Ian Morris. It is that sort of factual inaccuracy that makes me go mental, especially considering the length this author goes to to show he has his done his homework. Buy it if you must ( I did, and I have no one to blame but myself ) but don't say you weren't warned.

Book Description
For several decades, cultural imperialism has been the dominant paradigm for conceptualizing, labeling, predicting, and explaining the effects of international television. It has been used as an unchallenged premise for numerous essays on the topic of imported television influence, despite the fact that the assumption of strong cultural influence is not necessarily reflected in the body of research that exists within this field of study. In The Impact of International Television: A Paradigm Shift, editor Michael G. Elasmar and his contributors challenge the dominant paradigm of cultural imperialism, and offer an alternative paradigm with which to evaluate international or crossborder message influence.
In this volume, Elasmar has collected original research from leading scholars working in the area of crossborder media influence, and contributes his own meta-analysis to examine what research findings actually show on the influences of crossborder messages. The contributions included here illustrate points, such as: the contentions of cultural imperialism and the context in which its assumptions emerged and developed; the complexities of the relationship between exposure to foreign television and its subsequent effects on local audience members; the applicability of quantitative methods to a topic commonly tackled using argumentation, critical theory, and other qualitative approaches; and the difficulty of achieving strong and homogenous effects.
In bringing together the work of independent researchers, The Impact of International Television: A Paradigm Shift bridges over 40 years of research efforts focused on imported television influence, the results of which, as a whole, challenge the de facto strong and homogenous effects assumed by those who support the paradigm of cultural imperialism. The volume sets a theory-driven agenda of research and offers an alternative paradigm for the new generation of researchers interested in international media effects. As such, the volume is intended for scholars, researchers, and students in international and intercultural communication, cross-cultural communication, mass communication, media effects, media and society, and related areas. It will also be of great interest to academics in international relations, cross-cultural and social psychology, intergroup and international relations, international public opinion, and peace studies.
Customer Reviews:
Re-conceptualizing the Impact of International T.V........2004-12-09
For many decades, cultural imperialism paradigm has been used to explain the effects of international television on local viewers. Through this book Michael G. Elasmar along with other leading scholars challenge the use of cultural imperialism paradigm for explaining the effects of international television on domestic audiences through conducting a meta-analysis approach for both published and unpublished manuscripts that were introduced during the period of 1960 till January 1995.
More importantly, at this book, Elasmar introduces a new model that is called `Susceptibility to Imported Media' (SIM), which media researchers should put into consideration while studying the impact of cross boarder television.
Through the SIM model, Elasmar argues that prior information represented in knowledge, beliefs and attitudes about out groups; the perceived utility; and the involvement in content, are all pre existing schema that will determine how the T.V. content will be comprehended, retained and then recalled. Consequently, prior information will determine the type of effect that exposure to imported T.V. content will produce.
Furthermore, Elasmar introduced the idea of labeling the process of T.V. influence on viewers, which he called the Media-Accelerated Culture Diffusion (MACD). The core idea behind this label is based on his belief that cultures influence other cultures without the conspiracy claim behind the cultural imperialism paradigm. He stressed the idea of culture diffusion due to the existence of "a continuity of indirect causation from culture event to culture event through the medium of human intermediaries" (Page 173). Elasmar concluded his book by proposing an expanded research agenda for future studies.
The originality of this book is that it offers a new alternative paradigm and labeling for the explanation of the effects of international T.V. programs. This book will be of real benefit for scholars interested in the fields of cross-cultural communication, media effects studies and international communications. It is considered of paramount importance to media researchers, since it opens new scopes for future researchers to further the understanding of the roles of audio visual media in diffusing cultures.

Telling the tale of the corporate revolution that forever changed the nature of the individual is no easy task. Authors David E. Fisher and Marshall Jon Fisher have hidden their sociohistory between the lines of the exciting story of the race to invent television. Eccentric geniuses John Logie Baird (whose only other invention was stay-dry socks) and teenaged Utah farm boy Philo T. Farnsworth struggled with limited resources to produce the first television systems, but their greatest challenge was coming up against the giant corporations that had nearly infinite money and resources. Pitting these lone romantics against the collective will of RCA, Tube turns a history of science into a thrilling page-turner.
Customer Reviews:
A poorly-researched semi-fictional account.......2004-05-18
To those seeking an introduction to television history, it may initially seem like an accurate book. First impressions can be deceiving.
What TUBE gains in advertising space, it lacks in accuracy. To a reader with sufficient previous background, it will appear to have been written and researched on the quick, and it comes to several misleading conclusions that evolve into outright fabrication. The authors do not seem to know how to get out of corners they carelessly write themselves into. They seem only too willing to make judgements on technologies and events which they clearly have not fully researched. There are simply too many outstanding errors for Tube to be a dependable reference for historians.
Let's hope if Tube has been reprinted, that the Fishers have done more background research, and have fixed the recurring 'boo-boos' that troubled the version I read.
A 2nd edition (with corrections) or even an enclosed 'errata' page is long overdue. Call me cynical, but I strongly suspect that the errors would happily be carried through to further printings, (if this has not occurred already). I do not recognize the new cover, but I expect it is simply a paperback version of the earlier hardcover with no content changes.
This may seem strong, but the more knowledge you amass about TV History from reputable sources, the more frustrated you will become with Tube.
A surprisingly likeable and interesting book........1998-11-03
This fine work has many of the qualities of a suspense novel, and is probably one of the best books of its kind ever written. It is written with a heart, and the reader easily feels what some of its subjects endured in this fascinating tale of the development and evolution of television, and later, color television. After this read, the reader will want to immediately order the equally excellent book about the development of HDTV by Joel Brinkley.
An accessible history of television technology.......1997-05-03
Tube is easily the most accessible history of television's early years (its "prehistory"), and a good read to boot. The great Zworykin/Farnsworth technology battle is pretty well presented, and the men themselves come alive in the text. Color television's development gets easily the best treatment I've seen anywhere in the non-technical press. However, the final chapter on the future of television was mostly worthless; historians (along with most of the rest of us) do not do well in predicting the future. In a few years that chapter probably will be seen as an embarassment which the rest of the book does not deserve
Cigars all around for a first-rate book.......1997-01-08
Lively, intelligent, thoroughly researched, Tube is the best history of its kind available. The grousings of certain Farnsworth zealots notwithstanding, the countrified genius of television finally gets his due in this volume. A great read

Book Description
This book is a thoroughly practical way to explore the 8051 and discover C programming through project work. Through graded projects, Dogan Ibrahim introduces the reader to the fundamentals of microelectronics, the 8051 family, programming in C, and the use of a C compiler. The specific device used for examples is the AT89C2051 - a small, economical chip with re-writable memory, readily available from the major component suppliers.
A working knowledge of microcontrollers, and how to program them, is essential for all students of electronics. In this rapidly expanding field many students and professionals at all levels need to get up to speed with practical microcontroller applications. Their rapid fall in price has made microcontrollers the most exciting and accessible new development in electronics for years - rendering them equally popular with engineers, electronics hobbyists and teachers looking for a fresh range of projects.
Microcontroller Projects in C for the 8051 is an ideal resource for self-study as well as providing an interesting, enjoyable and easily mastered alternative to more theoretical textbooks.
Dogan Ibrahim has been Associate Professor and Head of Department at the Near East University, Cyprus, lecturer at South Bank University, London, Principal Research Engineer at GEC Hirst Research Centre, and is now a hardware and software systems consultant to London's Traffic Control Systems Unit.
Practical projects that enable students and practitioners to get up and running straight away with 8051 microcontrollers
A hands-on introduction to practical C programming
A wealth of project ideas for students and enthusiasts
Customer Reviews:
TERRIBLE. A datasheet and a few app notes would trump this joke.......2007-04-16
I bought this book because I wanted to learn how to develop C for an 8051 (shocking given the title of the book). This book gives zero theory, terrible examples, and is tied to specific hardware (meaning - again - that it's not general enough to provide theory or practice of writing embedded C). I have a heavy EE background and am a reasonable assembler programmer. I wanted to learn embedded C because I thought I needed it for a particular application. Turns out that a) I didn't need C (assembly worked fine/better), and b) if you want to learn embedded C (and already know some PC C and programming), you DON'T want this book. It stinks, it's over priced, and certainly isn't for anyone who is serious about doing anything beyond the prescribed projects in this book. If you're a hobbyist, maybe this book is for you, but otherwise just pick up a datasheet/app notes and google.
An Excellent Book.......2004-05-17
The book is about using the C compiler to program microcontrollers, the 8051 series. I found the book to be extremely useful during my undergraduate studies and my final year project.
You can get a free Keil C compiler from the site www.keil.com or from the site: www.hitex.co.uk
The book explains working tested projects and not just the theory. Well done the author.
Good illustrations and tables.......2004-03-07
There are a few good illustrations and tables, however this book lacks the Machine Code and Hex Code needed to make these projects universally compatible. The code is exclusively written for the Keil C51 compiler which costs over $1000.00!!! He gives names of alternate compilers which could possibly be made to work with the projects in the book but fails to give the needed information to do that.
I am not a beginner to the C programming language and found it just about impossible to try and make some other compiler do the job. First of all, you will need the #include
file. Either you have to make one, or find one, and even if you are able to find one, you will probably need to modify it in order to make it work with your compiler. Your compiler needs to compile without errors and produce a HEX file. Good luck to you with that!
I tried to contact the Author and found that there is no Web Site or Email address listed, so there is no way of getting any additional information. He obviously knows his subject matter but fails to realize that maybe we don't. That's why I bought the book! Why write a book like this and hide from your readers??
A concise, clear and helpful book.......2001-09-28
The book covers many projects using the C Language. The book was almost-essential for my Undergraduate Studies, and I recommend it without doubt.
The style and flair of D. Ibrahim is also excellent, as common cliches and examples are avoided, leaving useful raw information which is not only helpful to the undergraduate but also to professionals and teachers.
Good book.......2000-12-19
The book starts good with basic stuff and slowly gets hard. There is lots of usefull infermation and handy tips. The stuff really gets yuo lerning, and I think its well worth reading even if like me you dont known much about microcontrollers.
