Book Description
This book is a revised, updated and greatly expanded version of the authors' "Probability and Random Processes: Problems and Solutions", first published in 1992. The 1000+ exercises contained within are not merely drill problems but have been chosen to illustrate the concepts, illuminate the subject, and both inform and entertain the student. Topics cover a broad range of subjects, including: elementary aspects of probability and random variables; sampling; Markov chains; convergence; stationary processes; renewals; queues; Martingales; diffusion; mathematical finance and the Black-Scholes model. This text is intended for general use, and to serve students as a companion text for elementary, intermediate and advanced courses in probability and random processes. Useful for anyone needing a large source of problems in these areas and at all levels. This book also acts as a companion volume to the new edition of Probability and Random Processes 3/e, (OUP - 2001), providing the solutions for the problems and exercises.

Great, fast.......2006-03-18
I get the book soon even if I make a mistake for the address!
On balance, this is a great book.......2002-08-29
Grimmett & Stirzaker's book, *One Thousand Exercises in Probability, 2nd ed.,* contains exercises with answers/solutions to each and every exercise covering a wide range of topics from probability. Although this book is a companion to G & S's 3rd edition of *Probability and Random Processes,* the authors strove to make the *Exercises* book stand on its own.
The 2 previous reviewers took a widely different view of this book. I wanted to have a balanced approach to reviewing this book. I hope this helps.
-- This book has exercises that cover a wide range of topics in probability. It starts from basic issues in probability and eventually covers topics like queueing, Monte Carlo (& Markov Chain Monte Carlo), Ito's lemma & financial option valuation, etc. Any one vaguely interested in probability realizes that the topics covered by Grimmett & Stirzaker are *hot topics* and very useful to those who want to try to get a sense of how important probability theory is in real life. I can't think of a comparable book that is so ambitious and covers so much useful ground in one place. [At least not one with answers to every question.]
-- I am not personally familiar with Grimmett's work (I believe he is at Cambridge University). I am, however, familiar with Strizaker's work (he is at Oxford). I consider him to be one of the finest expositers of probability theory. Stirzaker's views on probability theory (which I read in a different work) is one of the most lucid and sensible I have ever come across. Anyone seriously interested in probability should try to get exposure to Stirzaker's thoughts on the matter.
-- I believe this book is GREAT for self-study. One of the major problems I have with many math, science, engineering, and other technical books is that -- even very good books -- do not provide answers/solutions to the questions they pose. As someone who is very interested in self-study, I find a book like this one -- which has the answers/solutions to ALL of the questons -- to be extremely refreshing and welcomed.
To address the prior criticism that this book does not contain a sufficient amount of detail in the solutions .... I would suggest that such a criticism is unfair. As I pointed out above (and most people know) it is very rare to have technical books like this where there are a great deal of interesting and useful exercises given plus answers/solutions to all of the questions posed. For 2 emminent Oxbridge dons to write such a book is even more exciting.
In all fairness, Grimmett & Stirzaker wrote this book with the intent that it be used along with an appropriate probability textbook(s). Any one willing to take the time to look at the solutions given along with a companion text should be able to work out what went wrong (or right) with any question that the reader attempts to work out.
In closing, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in going from a novice level at probability to a point where you can approach and solve useful problems in probability.
Well worth the effort.......2002-01-18
I appreciate the other reviewer's oppinion as it is indeed true
that some of the problems' solutions are succinct.
However it is clearly not the point of the set of books to provide
the reader with fully worked solutions to every problem. It is
often like this in maths, you just got to go for it, no matter.
If you kick off from the first chapter and attempt the problems
in increasing order of diffculty keeping the course book by your
side, you should be fine, really.
This course is very rewarding.
Lots of answers, not many solutions.......2002-01-10
This book was a big disappointment for me. I give it two stars for providing the answers to the problems. It would get much more if it actually provided adequate solutions to the problems. It is a good book if you know basically how to do the problems and just want to check answers. I guess I'm just stupid because I could use some guidance for starting and proceeding through the problems. The "solutions" often omit what I would deem to be crucial startup steps for many of the problems; without those critical steps, the "solution" that is given (which sometimes consists of nothing but the final answer) can be extremely difficult to comprehend. I had high hopes when I purchased this book; I thought it would be well worth my money to get solutions to the problems so I could figure out the errors in my reasoning. Unfortunately I was gravely mistaken.
Other reviews indicate that this is typical and I would agree, it's not written to those who need help but those who have a strong grasp on the topic. It doesn't matter to me who has written a book, if it's not helpful it's just not worth the money.

No Laughs.......2006-10-14
This fictional book is about a cat, nicked named Callie, in session with a human therapist. Callie is there to get over her mother abandoning her and many other idiosyncrasies common to a cat, such as excessive hairball production, peeing inappropriately, etc. Although the author captured a cat's behavior well (except for the human aspects such as the Internet gambling addiction), I wish I could say that I found this book funny; but I didn't. I was hoping I'd at least laugh once at Callie's antics, but I just didn't find the story funny and I'm a cat owner for over 20 years. However, I'm glad others were able to. Remember that laughter is subjective and unfortunately my experience differs from what the other reviewers encountered.
On another note, the publishing of the book was substandard. For example, the font type printed in the book sometimes varied in size on the same page. Pages 16 and 42 (and almost every other page) provide good examples of what I'm talking about. These changes were distracting. I'm not referring to the italic font used to indicate the author's private thinking, but the apparent use of a font size 12 one paragraph and then a font size 10 in another paragraph and halfway through the sentence back to another font size 12. In addition, some incorrect wording was left in the text. For instance, "abandoned" instead of "abandonment" should have been used on Page 43; "tone down" instead of "tone done" should have been used on Page 48. There were other proofreading errors throughout the text, such as on Page 49 where one sentence picks up several blank lines down. Nevertheless, this did not cause me to lower my rating as the shoddy publishing is the publisher's responsibility. Most people probably wouldn't notice or even care, but as someone heavily into documentation, all these publishing mistakes broke my focus from the narrative a little bit. I read many books and a few errors are only normal; however, it is unusual to find a book so messy with proofreading errors.
In summary, I found the book to be just okay. The story was cute, silly, and a lighthearted read but not the comedy I was expecting and this is why I rated it a 3.
One hot cat!.......2003-10-18
Calico Nicole is one hot cat! Sex, drugs, gambling--it had all the elements of real life from a cat's perspective. Funny, funny book! Cathy Parker must be a cat lover from way back. She has the inside scoop on how cats must really think and feel. She was able to "humanize" Calico to the point you forget she's a cat. When you suddenly remember, it's hilarious. And those outfits were a riot. Cathy Parker is on target. Her descriptions of Calico's numerous disorders were written in easy to follow layman's terms so everyone could feel for Calico and for Cathy. Calico has real issues, issues true to so many of us. As I was reading I could relate to her problems...and I'm not a cat! Cathy must be a excellent therapist. Her insight was terrific! I can't wait for the sequel!
YOU'LL LOVE IT!.......2003-10-18
If you've ever been in therapy, thought about therapy or are just a cat lover, you'll find Cat on the Couch: A Cat's Journey into Psychotherapy hilarious. Callie the cat drives her therapist crazy with her "issues" which include addictive relationships, fear of heights, infertility, and addiction to internet pornography and internet gambling. Who would ever thought a talking cat could be so much like we are. Read it. You won't be disappointed.
Very Fun Reading!.......2003-10-12
Cat on the Couch is fun reading! You'll love hearing the escapades of Calico Nicole Ford, a cat with issues. Cathy brings this feisty fantasy feline to life for us in a way that creates very enjoyable and fun reading! I *highly* recommend this book for those who enjoy laughing out loud. As a licensed clinical social worker, Cathy gives us a healthy dose of laughter, realizing its importance in our lives. Her gift of humor is Cat on the Couch. Thank you so much for writing this very entertaining book!

First time in paperback: The definitive study of heavy metal culture that "does for metal what Greil Marcus's Lipstick Traces did for the Sex Pistols"
-Chicago Sun-Times
Few forms of music elicit such strong reactions as does heavy metal. Embraced by millions of fans, it has also attracted a chorus of critics, who have denounced it as a corrupter of youth-even blamed it for tragedies like the murders at Littleton. Deena Weinstein argues that these fears stem from a deep misunderstanding of the energetic, rebellious culture of metal, which she analyzes, explains, and defends. The music and its makers, its fans, its dress code, its lyrics-she interprets all aspects of the metal world, and in the process unravels the myths, misconceptions, and truths about an irreverent subculture that has endured and evolved for twenty years.
Customer Reviews:
Very well done........2007-06-16
Better than most, this is a great tomb for all those metal-heads out there inculding myself. Accurate and up to date info. in depth informtion that usually takes two or three books to fully locate. Very impresive, highly recommended.
Very informative! A must for every metalhead! .......2004-10-18
This is by far the most intellectual book ever written on the subject of Heavy Metal! This book goes into great depths regarding the birth of the stlye, both in terms of its musical roots, as well as the image associated with this genre. It has an almost sociological evaluation of the fans of metal and what their lifestyle consists of. This book also enlightens us as to why critics - both from the liberal left as well as the conservative right - detest this style of music. It later goes on into the fragmentation of the genre (regarding the Thrash metal scene and glam rock). There is a final chapter which deals with the genre during and after the nineties, but the vast majority of the book deals with the '70s and '80s. There is a slight (North) American bias, concentrating more on bands that are from English speaking countries (namely the U.S., the U.K. & Canada) but some European bands are also mentioned. It was an enjoyable read and there are many examples illustrated by the author to make the reading less dry. Highly recommended for fans of the genre and for those who are trying to understand the genre.
I'm glad this book isn't for heavy metal fans!.......2004-05-23
Fiquei tremendamente contente e satisfeita em achar este livro que trata o heavy metal sob outro ponto-de-vista sem ser aquele do barulho.
This book is NOT for the true metal fan........2004-02-27
I only had to glance at the first few pages to realize that this
book is NOT written for the knowlegable fan who wants to learn more in-depth material. It reads like it was written by someone who has no experience or knowledge with the Heavy Metal genre.
The author comes across as trying to explain something she does not comprehend herself. Just by reading a few sample sentences, I felt that the author is aiming for a much older (or younger) audience than the typical metal listener. I am returning this book immediately.
The Bible of Heavy Metal.......2000-10-06
If you're like me and have spent hours reading "Heavy Metal: A Cultural Sociology", or if you are at all interested in the Metal community and the roots, styles, and spirit of Heavy Metal, then this book is a must have. This edition is less a revision, and more a republishing of "HM: A Cultural Sociology" with an additional chapter acting as a rather large update on what happened in the decade since "HM: ACS" came out. Dealing with the development, enemies, fans, artists, outlets, community, subgenres, positives and even negatives of Heavy Metal, this should be read by every Metalhead and rock fan. Highly recommended, especially in the cheaper paperback format.

Book Description
Imagining Adoption looks at representations of adoption in an array of literary genres by diverse authors including George Eliot, Edward Albee, and Barbara Kingsolver as well as ordinary adoptive mothers and adoptee activists, exploring what these writings share and what they debate.
Marianne Novy is Professor of English and Women's Studies, University of Pittsburgh.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating, accessible, thought-provoking.......2003-11-09
This anthology examines themes of adoption in drama, fiction, poetry, and film, from Shakespeare and Dickens up to "Secrets and Lies" and "Losing Isaiah." The authors examine older myths and stereotypes of adoption and adoptive mothers that we tend to forget in current conversations, such as the "shame" of illegitimate birth and "infertile" women. Imagining Adoption also covers current debates in the adoptive community on whether to pursue information on birth parents, open adoptions, and non-traditional families. More than interesting, this book is guaranteed to open a reader to many new insights about adoption and identity!

Interesting and informative guide.......2000-11-03
"Code Blue" is a great introduction to hospitals for anyone interested in this topic. While the book's title suggests that it is intended as a tool for writers, I think that many other people would like to have a more comprehensive understanding of the practice of medicine in this venue. This book has been criticized by other readers, and the common thread in their dissatisfactions seems to stem from the fact that this book doesn't offer a detailed explanation of everything that might possibly occur in a hospital. If such a book were to exist, it would be infinitely long and comparably expensive. Working within the bounds of practicality, I think that Drs. Wilson and Page have done a superb job of providing an overview of this subject. If you're looking for highly detailed knowledge on a specific subject you will likely need to perform further research, but that should not be construed as being a criticism of this book. Bottom line: A well-written and informative guide that will give you an insider's view of hospitals. (Review by Kevin Pezzi, MD [...], author of "Believe It or Not! True Emergency Room Stories" and "Fascinating Health Secrets".)
Interesting, but Misses the Mark.......2000-05-01
I found this book to be very interesting and well-written, but I think it misses the mark as "A Writer's Guide to Hospitals." Maybe it was a bit too ambitious (that's a very broad topic) or maybe the two authors had a different idea of the book's purpose, but I found it vacillated between a soapbox for one author's disenchantment with the medical system in America today (a disenchantment I share) and a good survey of how a hospital works for hospital workers. Here and there I found the type of information I expected to find (what the mood is in certain areas of the hospital, where the power lies, a sample of dialog, and so on), but that was unfortunately the smallest part of the book. The glossaries are helpful and well-written (but not complete -- "Stat" is missing). Though the history section is interesting (I love history), maybe it should have been left out so they could devote more time to what writers need. I'm glad I read it, but didn't really provide me with the info I need for two medical scenes in my novel.
Info packed, but one OD'd with the author's self-importance.......2000-02-13
Code Blue is filled with information concerning hospitals and how they are supposed to work, but, as a book (especially a guide to writers), this one badly needs professional triage. It is obvious Drs Wilson and Page know their subject, perhaps too well. It is a slow read, and only one chapter (Mistakes, Complications and Accidents) offers interesting info for new writers. Unless, of course, your plot centers on the future of HMOs. I expected more from these distinguished medical men since they both have contributed two other excellent volumes in the How Dunit Series. Perhaps the most humane jesture is to remove life support from Code Blue, and let it pass on to its final resting place.

14 Year-old From Delaware Loves This Book.......1999-11-30
I love the hit TV drama "E.R.". I love the mix of humor, drama, suspense, action, and real-life information and procedures. My dad is an er attending physician and I have "shadowed" him in the er and loved every bit of it. I think that "E.R." is a true-to-life portrayal of what goes on in a real er. This book is a great source of information about the show "E.R." and the behind the scenes information is great, too. I would recomend this book to anyone that is an "E.R." fan like me and for anyone that bothered to read this review of a great book!
A must for ER fans!.......1998-05-30
This book has some good photos and an interesting account on how Americas #1 TV show is made. I found it an interesting read and worth buying if you are an ER fan!
ER is the best show acordding to us 13-14 year olds in Tx........1997-12-18
ER is the best, my friend(Corey) and I (Bree) love ER, and every thing about it. We really like George Clooney even though he's (Corey) is a boy he also likes him. We even said that we should be doctors on ER so that instead of watching it every Thursday we could just be in it. We also think that anyone who doesn't like ER is crazy. The book was very enjoyalbe we nothing wrong with it. It was one of the best adult books a teenager could ever read. It's the best.
Simply the best book for any ER fan!.......1997-12-17
"Behind the Scenes at ER" was a fantastic insight into the brilliant TV series. A wealth of pictures of the show and biographies of the actors make this book one not to be missed!

Outstanding.......2005-08-12
I bought this book and do not own the game yet. I bought the wrong book by mistake,(my mistake) and really wanted the Hitman 2 book, and have since ordered the correct book. Now I will buy the Hitman Contracts game to go with this book. The book arrived in a timely manor as described, and I am happy with it. Thank you allbooks4u.
Made a great gift!.......2005-08-02
Hello! I actually did not purchase this for myself, but as a gift for my 24-year-old brother. When I asked him how he liked it and if he was getting what he had hoped from it his response was an emphatic, "yes"! He said that the game seemed almost useless without it because you were limited as to how far you could go in the game and how much you can do in the game.
My brother is pretty honest with his opinions so, from the sounds of it, this would be a sure hit for anyone who enjoys exploring the videogame world!
I hope this has helped!
First time buyer.......2005-02-04
Hi this is the first time I ever brought an item off Amazon.Com.
It came new just like I order it I will be buying more item from
Amazon.Com in the future!
GREAT HELP!!.......2004-06-13
This book has came in helpful while playing this game.
As good as..........2004-05-16
This guide is as good as the last 2 strategy guides for this franchise game. Many will remember that they too can be considered, if you are unfamiliar with these games, difficult to follow. You may actually have to "think outside the box" when using it. But, not anymore then the other HITMAN guide books. There are so many ways to do a HIT that all the variables and methods could never fit in book form. There's a guide DVD out now if you want to see them. We need to remember that guides give one example on how to go about finishing a level or get us through a rough patch when stuck. When you are playing a game as open-ended as this one. The guide is just a foundation. What you build on it is all up to you.
