Book Description
This manual, now available in paperback, offers a detailed, up-to-date explanation of how to carry out economic valuation using stated preference techniques. It is relevant for the application of these techniques to all non-market goods and services including: air and water quality; provision of public open space; health care that is not sold through private markets; risk reduction policies and investments not provided privately; provision of information as with the recorded heritage, the protection of cultural assets and so on. The resulting valuations can be used for a number of purposes including, but not limited to: demonstrating the importance of a good or service; cost-benefit analysis; setting priorities for environmental policy; design of economic instruments; green national/corporate accounting; and natural resource damage assessment.
Compiled by the leading experts in the field, this manual starts by explaining the concepts. It shows how to choose the most appropriate technique and how to design the questionnaires. Detailed advice on econometric analysis is provided, as well as explanation of the pitfalls that need to be avoided.

Market Structure and Foreign Trade: Increasing Returns, Imperfect Competition, and the International Economy
ASIN: 0521038170 |
Book Description
The existence of firms with different levels of efficiency within a country plays an important role in this in-depth analysis of industrial and trade policies in a multi-country trade-theoretic framework. Sajal Lahiri and Yoshiyasu Ono examine various industrial policies, R&D subsidies and trade policies under conditions of imperfect competition in a product market created by the presence of Cournot oligopolistic interdependence in production. The book covers commodity trade (assuming full employment) and foreign direct investment (assuming unemployment) making it of interest to researchers, advanced students and policy makers.

Trade is defined broadly to include trade in commodity as well as trade in capital, specifically foreign direct investment. While the first part of the book focuses on commodity trade and assumes full employment, the latter considers foreign direct investment and assumes the presence of unemployment. Given the importance of industrial policies and the prevalence of imperfect competition, together with on-going attention to theoretical issues concerning industrial economics, this research will excite interest amongst researchers, advanced students and policy makers in this field.

The book was a cute and humorous satire of The first cat!.......1998-06-21
The book presents a cute and humorous view of Socks the Cat. The book is very accurate in terms of nature of a cat (shreading priceless antique furniture, destroying China, etc).
Amusing if sophomoric political cat cartoon book........1997-01-02
Fans of Michael O'Donoghue's black comedy will be disappointed by this light-hearted collection of humorous observations of domestic and political life by Socks, the Clinton housecat, as drawn by J.C. Suares. Small children and cat book enthusiasts will be amused. As far as this reviewer is aware, this was O'Donoghue's last published book before he died in 1995.--Andrew Roaze

Book Description
The early decades of American popular music-Stephen Foster, Scott Joplin, John Philip Sousa, Enrico Caruso-are, for most listeners, the dark ages. It wasn't until the mid-1920s that the full spectrum of this music-black and white, urban and rural, sophisticated and crude-made it onto records for all to hear. This book brings a forgotten music, hot music, to life by describing how it became the dominant American music-how it outlasted sentimental waltzes and parlor ballads, symphonic marches and Tin Pan Alley novelty numbers-and how it became rock 'n' roll. It reveals that the young men and women of that bygone era had the same musical instincts as their descendants Louis Armstrong, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and even Ozzy Osbourne. In minstrelsy, ragtime, brass bands, early jazz and blues, fiddle music, and many other forms, there was as much stomping and swerving as can be found in the most exciting performances of hot jazz, funk, and rock. Along the way, it explains how the strange combination of African with Scotch and Irish influences made music in the United States vastly different from other African and Caribbean musics; shares terrific stories about minstrel shows, "coon" songs, whorehouses, knife fights, and other low-life phenomena; and showcases a motley collection of performers heretofore unknown to all but the most avid musicologists and collectors.
Customer Reviews:
Bounce!.......2004-01-29
American music didn't get hot suddenly in the 1950's with the arrival of Rock 'n' Roll. It didn't get sexy when Jazz provided the soundtrack to hi-jinx in the back seat of a Model A Ford in the 1920's. American music, with serendipitous blend of African and Celtic influences, has been scaring church folk and turning good girls bad since the 19th century. David Wondrich, with great wit and careful research, tells the quintessentially american story of our funky popular music.

Product Description
Hal Chase is considered by many to be one of the best first basemen ever to play the game of baseball. He was able to make the routine look spectacular, the spectacular look routine. But Chase will never have his plaque in Cooperstown because he has gone down in history as the biggest crook in baseball. Chase was repeatedly accused of throwing games, bribing players, betting against his own team, and various other crimes, yet with his relaxed nature he always managed to get off the hook for his misdeeds by working his charm. His major league career lasted from 1905 to 1919, and by the mid1930s he was a destitute alcoholic living off friends. The last fifteen years of Chases life saw him hospitalized repeatedly for a variety of ailments, living off a sister and brother-in-law who loathed him. This work traces the turbulent life and times of Hal Chase from his humble beginnings to his sad end.
Customer Reviews:
Setting the Record Straight?.......2002-02-10
Martin Kohout has given us the definitive biography of one of the most controversial athletes ever to play a major sport. Hal Chase was one of the premier ballplayers of his day, maybe the best first basemen ever, but he possessed, as one teammate said, "a corkscrew brain." He was never convicted of any crimes and was never banned from the game, but Kohout lays out the facts of Chase's career in detail, and the reader can make the call. What emerges is a true cautionary tale of squandered talent and a long-overdue addition to baseball lore and history.
The Tragedy of Hal Chase.......2001-11-24
Martin Kohout has penned a fascinating account not only of Hal Chase's eventful career, but of early 20th century baseball as well. One need not be well-versed in baseball lore in order to derive great pleasure from this work.
The book rests on a mountain of research. One of its many strengths is the insightful description of how the easy morality of the times spilled over into what I had previously believed to be the pristine world of baseball. The connections which existed among certain owners, managers, and underworld figures during Chase's major league career shatters the myth that the 1919 Black Sox scandal was an abberation. Especially interesting is the linkage that Mr. Kohout finds between the poisonous aftermath of WWI and that scandal.
The book is well written and carries the reader briskly along with a season by season account of Chase's exploits, both on and off the field. Unlike Pete Rose, whom this reviewer always found detestable, Hal Chase comes off as a sympathetic, likeable fellow, popular with the fans of every team for which he played. Yet, as Mr. Kohout tell us, he threw it all away -- his career, his family and friends, and his health. One is left wishing that Chase had possessed the character of a Gehrig.
Was He Really That Good?.......2001-11-20
Sportswriter Fred Lieb wrote that Hal Chase had "a corkscrew brain." Author Martin Kohout provides us with a very detailed account of the life of Hal Chase, "baseball's biggest crook." Whatever you want to know about Mr. Chase can be found in this book and some readers may feel they are being told more than they care to know. Chase is often given credit as being the greatest defensive first-baseman. His strength appears to have been on fielding sacrifice bunts and forcing the lead runner either at second or third base. This account provides the reader with a number of errors, purposely or not, Chase committed during games. In addition, he often was out of the lineup for one ailment or another. Hal bounced around a number of major league teams after wearing out his welcome with the one he was currently on. Each time he pledged to turn over a new leaf. Crooked ball playing took place during the turn of the century, and such times were ripe for a player with Chase's lack of morals. His personal life was a mess as well as his reputation on the field of play. I enjoy reading about players from the turn of the 20th century and was happy to be able to read about teams such as the New York Highlanders, the original Yankees, and players such as Hal Chase, even though he was a shady character. This book is definitely worth your time if you are interested in baseball history. If you are a casual fan, find something that is lighter reading.
This Boy Was So Crooked He Had TO Screw On His Socks.......2001-10-21
Ever since I was a little boy I`ve heard of Hal Chase from my Dad and Uncle and always wondered. what they were saying in undertones after they told me what a completly peerless fielder he was and so fast and quick that he made everyone else look slow. After studying the 1919 scandal I learned a little more of his deviousness but in being able to talk to Ty Cobb and also Swede Risberg in the 1950`s I learned how great he could be if he wanted to. This book is a great work and I can`t believe the research and digging that had to go into it. What a great complete history of Prince Hal. There are more pictures than I`ve ever seen of him and incidents in his career that I had`nt heard of.Chase was such a complex character that he was very hard for some people to dislike; others loathed him and indeed he was baseball`s biggest crook. The description of his slide to oblivion was well done especially his life in Arizona and his final demise in California. As a matter of fact he died in the town where Ilive. I never got to see him play as I had only been home from overseas less than a year when he died but others have told me how he would go out to the high school diamond and help some kid trying to play first base. He was old at the time but my friend said you should have seen the moves he showed the youngster. They electrified the adults watching. The book brings this out. All in all to me a great book and I enjoyed it immensely.
The Point Gets Lost.......2001-10-05
While quite impressive in its volume of detail, which is fully footnoted and sourced as any academic tome, and obviously a project that the author slaved over for years, he seems incapable or unwilling to take this mass of information and do anything with it. Chase is one of the more controversial figures in the history of the game and worthy of a full length biographical treatment, but this reads like a private genealogy; since the author comes to none but the most tentative conclusions, the day-to-day probing of Chase's activities is, in the end, numbing and tiresome, a pointless excercise in minutiae as the author sits squarely on the fence in regard to each and every of the many indiscretions that marred his career. A book should amass information and through the authors' powers of insight and persuasion, arrive at some kind of conclusion or point of view. This does not, and I wish it did. While this will be useful as a source book for those who want to know what Chase did during a given season or particular time, the larger questions around Chase and gambling are not advanced beyond what is already known. A book of this scope should have answered those questions.

Customer Reviews:
Okay.......2003-12-02
I learned a little from the book, but not much. Many of the stories in here are dated, too. Some of the "happy couples" they mention have split-up, and several people have passed-on.
I wasn't aware this book existed until recently, and that is strange, considering I am a die-hard traditional country music fan.
However, sometimes it was annoying to read about Lorianne's talking about herself. She tried to appear "modest" but was forever going on about compliments people bestowed upon her regarding her looks. This isn't a book about her "beauty"--it's supposed to reveal insights about country music performers. Charlie Chase came across as a much nicer person than Lorianne did.
This book was so-so. I learned a few things I didn't know before, but for the most part, it was re-hashing facts I was already aware of.

Something in the Air: Radio, Rock, and the Revolution That Shaped a Generation
ASIN: 0812238710 |
Book Description
When American radio broadcasting began in the early 1920s there was a consensus among middle-class opinion makers that the airwaves must never be used for advertising. Even the national advertising industry agreed that the miraculous new medium was destined for higher cultural purposes. And yet, within a decade American broadcasting had become commercialized and has remained so ever since.
Much recent scholarship treats this unsought commercialization as a coup, imposed from above by mercenary corporations indifferent to higher public ideals. Such research has focused primarily on metropolitan stations operated by the likes of AT&T, Westinghouse, and General Electric. In American Babel, Clifford J. Doerksen provides a colorful alternative social history centered on an overlooked class of pioneer broadcaster--the independent radio stations.
Doerksen reveals that these "little" stations often commanded large and loyal working-class audiences who did not share the middle-class aversion to broadcast advertising. In urban settings, the independent stations broadcast jazz and burlesque entertainment and plugged popular songs for Tin Pan Alley publishers. In the countryside, independent stations known as "farmer stations" broadcast "hillbilly music" and old-time religion. All were unabashed in their promotional practices and paved the way toward commercialization with their innovations in programming, on-air style, advertising methods, and direct appeal to target audiences. Corporate broadcasters, who aspired to cultural gentility, were initially hostile to the populist style of the independents but ultimately followed suit in the 1930s.
Drawing on a rich array of archives and contemporary print sources, each chapter of American Babel looks at a particular station and the personalities behind the microphone. Doerksen presents this group of independents as an intensely colorful, perpetually interesting lot and weaves their stories into an expansive social and cultural narrative to explain more fully the rise of the commercial network system of the 1930s.
Customer Reviews:
A Forgotten Chapter in the History of American Broadcasting.......2006-11-10
Doerksen uncovers the fascinating yet neglected histories of the independent stations that operated in the dawn of radio broadcasting. He details their (sometimes) humorous battles with the corporate players and the Federal Radio Commission and the ultimate demise of these stations under re-written rules and "consolidation". I was surprised to learn that it was the populist stations -broadcasting hillbilly music or vaudeville acts or ultraconservative diatribes or "smutty jazz"-- who pushed broadcast advertising, not the "Big Four" corporations or the advertising industry. A concise and easy read.
A terrific read.......2006-05-16
This is an extremely entertaining, compulsively readable book. Doerksen mounts a compelling case for his view that early radio involved much much more than the non-commercial high-brow recordings of the national networks. But the great joy of reading this book is in the stories. Doerksen gives us robust, full-bodied descriptions of the people who filled the airwaves of the 1920s, of the (sometimes craven, sometimes wacky) things they cared about and how they tried to use radio to promote then. Whether or not you think you're interested in early twentieth century broadcast history per se, I can guarantee you'll be enthralled by the outsized on-air personalities Doerksen brings to life.
Good, but the author sure missed a trick.......2006-02-20
This was an interesting book about how the medium of radio was perceived when it was brand new. Essentially middle-class people attributed all sorts of miraculous potentialities to broadcasting, and expected it to bring universal culture, prosperity & wisdom. In other words, this was the Twenties version of the Internet bubble of the 90s. I kept expecting the author to refer to the obvious historical parallels between the two mediums but he never does. I actually found it distracting as I got closer to the end of the book, wondering when he was going to acknowledge the 9,000 pound elephant standing in his foyer. Maybe the author is so old that he hasn't heard of the Internet or something. Anyway, other than that, it tells an interesting story.
A fast fun read.......2006-02-19
Anyone interested in radio history or the 1920s in general would enjoy this book, which tells the stories of forgotten pioneers of radio from the days before the networks took over the airwaves. A lot of the radio personalities profiled were kind of crazy and the book is often quite funny. It's very well written and I read it cover to cover in two sittings.

Book Description
This book helps developers and system administrators understand Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). For the first time the Windows Operating System employs a unified technology to represent software and hardware management. The power of WMI in systems management stretches to virtually every piece of software and hardware. So regardless of whether you're a team leader, software engineer or system administrator, WMI will probably affect you.
After the introduction, the book starts covering where management technologies/frameworks were (SNMP and DMI) and roughly how they worked and the differences between them. This leads to the reasons why the Desktop Management Task Force (DMTF) defined a protocol/schema called WBEM (Web Based Enterprise Management). Microsoft adopted WBEM and WMI was born. WMI is an implementation of the WBEM standard and it is also consistent with Microsoft's Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) initiative. The book continues to explain how to understand the various class schemas and the WMI tools provided by Microsoft. The class schemas describe virtually every aspect of a network, computer and its operating system together with the installed software. The book then introduces how WMI fits together with all its different building blocks.
From a development point of view, the most important place to start in making your own software/hardware manageable through a standard management environment is learning how to develop a class schema. The book takes a whole two chapters to discuss how to do this.
Accessing the WMI management environment can be achieved a number of ways. The book covers how system administrators can develop script to access and manipulate the management environment. The next part of the book is then focused on how developers can use and access the management environment through both the C++/COM interface and the .net framework. A chapter is also included how application developers can develop their UI management tools for the Microsoft Management Console (MMC). A crucial chapter in the book describes how software and hardware developers can write their own WMI providers. WMI providers are the gateway for developers to expose their own class schema.
Finally, the book covers a very little-known subject of the WMI toolset called Event Tracing. Event Tracing is a very powerful and high performance method of instrumenting applications. It allows applications to expose very detailed information about an operation or task. The operating system uses this technology to expose activity in the Windows kernel, security subsystems and numerous other subsystems.
Customer Reviews:
caution - some assertions flat wrong.......2007-03-14
It still remains possible that this is the best book out there on WMI - the other reviews like it and the alternatives do not seem inspiring. Googling (( McBride death computer )) hints that one might not sell all that many copies of a book on WMI, compared to the Boom Days.
However I jumped right into the final chapter on ETW. Page 672 contains two assertions which I knew from previous hacking were flatly wrong. Googling (( WMI ERRATA )) is sufficient to return the book's home page, however the errata page contains no information, just an "under construction" as of 2007-march-13.
Plus which the general area of event tracing-logging is SIGNIFICANTLY updated in Windows Vista - there is no sign on this website of a revised edition, so actually the best book on WMI might be MSDN-online, which is of course free !
Best WMI book I have seen.......2005-06-14
I am now on chapter 5, but this book really takes the reader by the hand into the world of WMI.
Chapter 2 covers previous management technologies like SNMP and DMI.
Chapter 3 describes WMI, its motivation and details about its implementation that are absent from any Microsoft documentation yet. Note that MSDN lately revamped its documentation, so it is much better now.
Chapter 4 does a tour of the CIM model and the tools the Microsoft WMI SDK provides. This is a nice tutorial for developers.
Chapter 5 introduces the user to the creation of CIM class schemas. The CIM model presented is a bit outdated as the DMTF CIM model is constantly changing. The reader should be aware of this in order to prevent confusion.
Overall, the book is very educational and still of very good value.
When I finish the book I will update my review.
Excellent For .NET Developers.......2004-10-13
On the back cover, one bolded line sums up this book nicely: "...[this title explains] how easy it is to write powerful management applications thru WMI on the .NET platform". If you are an experienced enterprise application developer working on the .NET platform and interested in what WMI can do to replace legacy solutions such as SNMP, this book is an excellent choice. Just enough attention is given to the history of WBEM, the overview of the WMI/CIM environment, the elements of the SDK, and the query methodologies of WMI, before spending the remainder of the book creating a solution to an example scenario, that anyone ready to "take the plunge" will not be disappointed.
Another quote on the back cover, as well as within the introduction section, states that "...[this book] is an essential companion for network administrators, software developers and team leaders looking to become proficient with WMI". Well, one third of that is true. I can't image what network administrator would find this title beneficial, as network administrators leverage WMI in automation and data gathering scripts or within applications such as SMS 2003. This title is not only not a traditional reference for the individual elements of WMI, nowhere in the title does it even cover the scriptable aspects of WMI. As for team leaders, if the team leader needs and introduction and administrative overview of what WMI is and what WMI's capabilities are, again, this is not the right title. For those two users I would recommend starting with Microsoft's free on-line WMI Scripting Primer (Microsoft Windows 2000 Scripting Guide) as it is straightforward, uncomplicated, and easy to understand.
WMI distilled.......2004-01-23
The authors do a great job of compiling all of the relavent specifications and standards related to WMI(WBEM). They filled in the missing pieces for my research and also provided several well written code examples which further helped to explain WMI. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who will be working with WMI.
