          Product Description

In recent years, the banking industry has faced significant challenges due to deregulation, globalization, financial innovation, and intensified global competition. In response to these challenges, banks have adopted strategies to grow and expand their activities, with mergers and acquisitions (M&As) being one of the most popular over the last decade. This unique book thus discusses the use of quantitative classification methods for the prediction of bank acquisitions. With an overview of the M&A trends in the EU banking industry and a survey of the motives for M&As, the authors compare various statistical and computational methodologies used to analyze and predict bank acquisitions. The material constitutes a useful basis for researchers and practitioners in banking management to develop and analyze investment decisions related to M&As.

            Book Description

This book surveys and summarizes the numerous approaches used to extract information on market expectations from option prices. The various approaches are thoroughly explained and many practical issues are discussed, including: data selection, data preparation, and presentation and interpretation of results. This enables the reader to easily implement these techniques in his own applied work.
Most studies concerning uncertainty in financial markets focus on actual uncertainty as represented by historical volatility measures, variances etc. In contrast, using option prices allows us to study uncertainty in expectations, i.e. to take a forward looking perspective. In some applications we study how ECB-council meetings affect uncertainty in money market expectations. Most interesting among our results is a number of event studies which compare how uncertainty in market participants’ expectations reacts to anticipated and unanticipated results of ECB-council meetings.

              Book Description

This book helps managers and investment analysts understand the value of analyzing the long-run growth processes of corporations. The authors develop an approach for analyzing and modeling the productivity growth of individual corporations and show the importance of corporate culture in determining firm performance in the long-run. The model is explained in clear and non-technical terms, and is backed up by full mathematical proofs in an appendix. The authors use their diversity of experience from the business, academic and policy sectors to demonstrate a range of applications for their model. By applying the ideas of complexity and self-organization to the modern corporation, this book provides an alternative to the standard economic approach to corporate growth.

                        Book Description

The past decade has witnessed a decline in saving throughout the developed world—the United States has the dubious distinction of leading the way. The consequences can be serious. For individuals, their own economic security and that of their families is jeopardized. For society, inadequate rates of saving have been blamed for a variety of ills—decreasing the competitive abilities of American industry, slowing capital accumulation, increasing our trade deficit, and forcing the sale of capital stock to foreign investors at bargain prices. Restoring acceptable rates of saving in the United States poses a major challenge to those who formulate national economic policy, especially since economists and policymakers alike still understand little about what motivates people to save.

In National Saving and Economic Performance, edited by B. Douglas Bernheim and John B. Shoven, that task is addressed by offering the results of new research, with recommendations for policies aimed to improve saving. Leading experts in diverse fields of economics debate the need for more accurate measurement of official saving data; examine how corporate decisions to retain or distribute earnings affect household-level consumption and saving; and investigate the effects of taxation on saving behavior, correlations between national saving and international investment over time, and the influence of economic growth on saving.

Presenting the most comprehensive and up-to-date research on saving, this volume will benefit both academic and government economists.

I loved this book. This guy is a genius, his understanding of sarcasm is perfect. I think one should always remember to laugh at one self, if you don't, others will. For all of us who read "Who Moved My Cheese", laugh at yourself, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you laugh - that helps, doesn't it? :-).......2004-02-11

Despite repeated claims that "...this is not a self-help book", Darrel Bristow-Bovey has come up with what is probably the most universally applicable self-help book in existence today.

From start to finish, this book is a riot. The moment you read his acknowledgements and a list of prospective books yet to be written by him, you know that the author isn't planning on pulling any punches. Continuously parodying Spencer Johnson's altogether more serious "Who Moved My Cheese?", this book takes things even further by poking fun at almost every self-help book written, and takes a few swipes at social icons like Oprah for good measure. The irreverent, even farcical tone of the book is highlighted when the author speaks about patenting "Osmatix", a revolutionary chemical with which the pages have been treated so that it helps you even if you don't read it.

But once you accept the fact that this is a book meant to make you laugh, and NOT to make too much conventional sense, you'll enjoy every bit of it. Yeah, even if you like self-help books. Bristow-Bovey's acidic humor drips off every sentence, and hardly a page goes by without you having to catch your breath after busting our guts laughing. You'll shake your head in amazement at his pseudo-scientific dissection of self-help books as a breed, and itch to dispense bits of advise to friends (and enemies) about "embracing their inner ostrich egg".

But the irony of it all is that in writing a book to dash your faith in the self-help genre, Bristow-Bovey has delivered a book that delivers the simplest self-help formula of them all - Read something funny, laugh aloud, feel better.

Try it. Heck, it works... and it involves a lot less work than anything else of its kind on the racks. Take a bow, Darrel.

                              5 out of 5 stars Faking Anything.......2003-12-21

This book made me feel better about myself (It made me laughed too!). Growing up was painful and like every teenager, I wanted acceptance: I wanted my peers to like me and to be popular girl in school. After reading this book, I realised Bristow-Bovey was right about a lot of things and the other self-help books. You won't learn much from this book, only to accept yourself as who you already are and actually stand proud for it.

5 out of 5 stars If you've ever had a self-help book given to you.......2003-10-10

The title is a parody of "Who Moved My Cheese?" by Spencer Johnson, but it doesn't stop at the title. Bristow-Bovey takes attack at self-help books with this work, which provides so much humor that every time you see someone reading a self-help book, you won't be able to stop chuckling. There is a story in the book about embrasing your inner ostrich egg, and it's absolutely precious. It encapsulates everything terrible about self-help books, but is so witty and well-crafted that I'm sure there's someone out there who took notes and is telling himself right now that he needs to embrace his inner ostrich egg.

If someone ever had the nerve to give you a self-help book, you should get them this book in return.

This book is sort of hard to get ahold of, so in spite of the warnings that Osmatix (a patented chemical treatment that allows you to benefit from the book without even reading it) is for one person only, I was forced to lend this book out. You won't read another self-help book after this.

4 out of 5 stars The lazy person's guide to helping yourself.......2003-06-29

I Moved Your Cheese, a satire on self-help books, written by Darrel Bristow-Bovey. This book has 96 pages (including last 3 pages BLANK to make the book look thicker) and has been published by New Holland Publishers (UK) Ltd (2002) and is distributed in India by Dolphin Publications.

The author, using humour, expresses his utter contempt for self-help books and those who read them and adds that the problem with the self-help books that litter the shelves of the bookstores and bedside tables of the nation, besides the fact that they are poorly written by unattractive authors, is that they expect you to do all the work. You are required to read them, remember key words, and perhaps even put their teachings into practice in everyday life.

The title I Moved Your Cheese implies a direct attack on the similarly named `Who Moved My Cheese?' by Dr. Spencer Johnson, a self-help book about dealing with change. But Darrel Bristow-Bovey has not limited himself to ridiculing just this; he makes disdainful references to Deepak Chopra and other self-proclaimed `gurus'.

I Moved Your Cheese is a total laugh riot. Darrel Bristow-Bovey, with his absurdly funny anecdotes and instances, will not disappoint readers seeking ridiculous humour. His chapter about the mango-throwing wise guy guru is hysterically funny and his take on Oprah and feng shui will have you sniggering smugly in your couch. His other stories about the Xam, his neighbour Bill, and his friend Chunko are sidesplitting. Instead of writing words of wisdom in cheese, like his forerunner, the author is found sardonically writing in the sand. Across the book, he is yelling, "Who moved my keys?" "I moved your geese" and other deliberately mocking lines.

And of course the process of "Osmatix", which the author himself has patented. The process where the reader not need read this book but should simply buy this book and keep it in a prominent position will make him/her a brighter, happier and more desirable person. Since, the pages have been treated with a revolutionary new formula that allows wisdom to pass directly from the page into the atmosphere, where it can be easily inhaled from any position.

With hilarity oozing from cover to cover, this book is a must-read for those who enjoy humour at it's mirthful best.

God sent me to piss the world off," Eminem boasts on his breakthrough hit "My Name Is."A grandiose claim to be sure, but it's hard to imagine another rapper generating as much controversy and outrage as this bleach-blonde Detroit MC outlaw while still selling millions of records and becoming a hero to pop fans and hardcore hip-hop purists alike. The sharp-tongued product of crushing poverty and an unstable homelife, Eminem is much more than the goofy smartass he usually portrays himself as.Beyond the artist's inventive rhyming skills and appealingly warped lyrical persona, the multi-platinum major-label albums The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP present a dark, psychologically complex character whose vivid, vengeful rhymes embody a timely collision of midwestern white trash and urban hip-hop cultures, while portraying an unpredictably violent yet absurdly hilarious world.Adopting the cartoonish yet unsettling persona of Slim Shady, Eminem spins colorfully absurd narratives involving sadistic violence while reflecting the tortured psyche of a deeply conflicted character whose real-life pain lurks beneath the surface of his outrageous alter ego. It's those contradictions that help make Eminem a uniquely compelling artist whose primal appeal transcends boundaries of race and musical genre.EMINEM: CROSSING THE LINE, the first biography ever written of this unique pop-culture icon, offers a fascinating peek into the strange and twisted world of Slim Shady.

I thought this book was o.k. It really wasn't coming from the mind of Eminem it was coming from what was heard and provided me with some false details. Like his birthday, he was born in 1972 not 1975. So I was disappointed when I read that because I was also doing a report on him for one of my classes and come to find out some of the things I had in my report was wrong. However, than again do not get me wrong I learned some things about him that I did not know like his mother always tried to make him sick and he had no father so do not think the book was horrible. However, if you want to know how he got started in rapping and the hard things he had to go through then this book has it. That is what I thought of crossing the line.

I am a huge Eminem fan and this guy is WRONG!!!! Eminem was born in 1972-he just had his 31st birthday in October. If the guy can't even get his birthday right I won't waste my time or money!!

This book was an attempt to make money off of someone who has adoring fans. This book had little if no input from Eminem himself. I just recently bought HIS book, Angry Blonde. If you want the truth from the guy himself, buy that book instead.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A Book About TV Written By....Anyone? Anyone?.......2004-09-01

Years before his role as a high school economics teacher in "Ferris Buller's Day Off", Ben Stein penned this short book about the view of America from the perspective of a small group of highly paid Hollywood writers and producers.

Whilst in law school, Ben Stein had read "From Caligari to Hitler" by Siegfried Kracauer. In this book, Herr Kracauer attempted to advance his theory that the films of the Weimar Republic reflected the attitudes and thinking of the German nation. The text was obviously a big influence on Mr. Stein. After practicing law, working as a Nixon speech writer and teaching college, he moved to Los Angeles and began working in and around television. Operating under the theory that television is the dominant mode of communication in America, he attempted to learn as much about the thoughts of the people who create it as possible. The author spent a lot of time working at Norman Lear's production company. He also interviewed many writers and producers. The result is an easily read, anecdotal study of the attitudes and beliefs of the men and women who were creating the television of the 1970s.

After giving us an introduction to what is involved in the making of a TV show, as well as the roles of writers and producers, we are given 12 chapters on various groups and their television archetypes. For example, there are chapters entitled "Businessmen on Television", "Police on Television", "Small Towns on Television", etc. The pattern of each chapter is to introduce the way in which the group currently under discussion is portrayed, cite supporting examples from television shows and then provide interviews with producers and writers that are illustrative of the attitudes that are reflected in the television portrayals. Those interviewed range from the famous (e.g. Gary Marshal) to the lesser known (e.g. Stephen Kandel). The chapter then concludes with a summation and interpretation provided by Ben Stein. The last two chapters of the book examine possible sources of Hollywood's attitudes and the new American culture that has developed.

Throughout the book, the author makes clear his fondness for the people that he worked with and interviewed and also for the business itself. This does not, however, prevent him from being chagrined at the eccentric and occasionally conspiracy-prone beliefs of those he interviewed. We see well-off, successful and educated adults proffering theories of there being a strong link between business (all business)and the mafia or the belief that 8 wealthy families rule the world. This book was published in 1979 and may seem dated to some who read it. All of the shows referenced in the book have long since disappeared from the television landscape and Jimmy Carter is no longer president. Cable was not widely available, video games were primitive and the modern Internet did not exist. On the other hand, it is interesting to note how many of the stereotypes created by television are extant. The superficially idyllic small town with dark secrets to hide is but one familiar example that persists today.

The conclusion that Mr. Stein draws is that to whatever extent Siegfried Kracauer's thesis was correct in regards to German movies of the 1920s and 1930s, a similar theory relating to 1970s American television does not hold. Television of the 1970s (and quite likely of today) is not a reflection of society, but instead of the experiences and beliefs of the relatively small group of writers and producers who are in creative control of it. The author concludes by writing that he doesn't have any great sense that something bad will result from the views of the TV community. I think it would be quite interesting to see if his views have changed. In any event, it is unfortunately the case that this book is no longer in print. I do recommend tracking down a copy and reading it. Doing so will very likely change, if not the amount of television you watch, then at least the way in which you watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Taught me how to watch TV........2003-05-07

I read this book over 20 years ago. It taught me "how to watch TV." Critics have compared it to the film book classic, FROM CALIGARI TO HITLER (an analysis of how Weimer Germany films reflected German sociological undercurrents).

Ben Stein watched popular TV shows from the 1970s, both sitcoms and dramas, then analyed how various social groups are protrayed: businessmen (as criminals), the military (psychotic sadists), minorities (good-hearted), criminals (driven to do bad by racism and poverty) clergy (nice but ineffectual), govt social workers (noble, idealistic, hard-working).

Watch any episode of a 1970s show (Beretta, Kojak, Good Times, Rockford Files, The Jeffersons), and you'll be amazed at how consistent the formula is.

Ben Stein also interviewed many TV writers and producers, and demonstrated how their own backgrounds and lifestyles gave rise to the liberal biases reflected in their shows. (They really believed the world was as they portrayed it). Maybe half were Jews, the rest mainly Catholic, who were raised in working class environments and felt the sting of prejudice from "country club WASP Republicans."

Today, TV is not so liberal as in the 1970s. TV writer Rob Long wrote in National Review a few years back that 1990s sitcoms are apolitical, because a newer generation of TV writers has replaced the old. Most modern TV writers come from wealthy Hollywood families, or from the Ivy League (as was Long), so they no longer have the same liberal biases.

Even so, Ben Stein's book is STILL AS RELEVENT today as ever. Not because of what he discoverd about 1970s TV, but because of his method of analysis. Stein's book TAUGHT ME HOW TO WATCH TV. It's simply the best TV analysis book out there, great reading for anyone who wants to be a TV critic, or just to see TV more clearly.

Plenty of film theory books, but this is one of the few really great TV theory books. Also, it's a quick, easy read. Much intelligence, but in accessible language.

And YES, this is the SAME Ben Stein who hosts Comedy Central's WIN BEN STEIN'S MONEY.

In addition to the traditional ways of television channel selection, you will learn about new ways television channels can be search and selected using interactive electronic programming guides (EPGs). The different types of media formats that are used for IP television services are explained along with their control protocols.

Not all IP Television systems and services are the same. There are cost and quality tradeoffs along with common problem areas and risks. You will discover how the audio and video service quality can range from poor to above the quality that is already delivered to standard TV.

Because each IP television viewer has a unique address, this allows advertising messages to be sent to specific viewers (addressable advertising). The ability to direct advertising messages to specific target audiences (addressable advertising) is more valuable to companies than traditional broadcast advertising and this may result in reduced viewing costs.

Some of the most important topics featured are:

5 out of 5 stars Good introduction to IPTV.......2006-02-10

This was a good introduction book. While there is some technical descriptions in it, it is easy to understand the diagrams helped me to explain how it works to my staff. There are so many new terms and acronyms for IPTV, if you are just getting involved in IPTV, this book is a good start.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Bad joke.......2005-12-05

This book waste a page to explain: download speed = file size/bit rate even with ilustration (WOW). The rest of the book has the same technical level.
