Book Description
Summarizing the results of an internal evaluation of IMF-sourced technical assistance, Setting Up Treasuries in the Baltics, Russia, and Other Countries of the Former Soviet Union assesses the costs of the inputs, outputs, and efficiency with which technical assistance was delivered, and the effectiveness of the IMF's technical assistance program in building treasuries. The study also considers the factors that influence the relative efficiency, effectiveness, and impact of the technical assistance program in each of the countries. The paper concludes that the basic goal of building treasuries has largely been met in these countries, although the existing treasuries are at different stages of development.
Book Description
It's no understatement when the Atlanta Journal & Constitution calls P. S. Wall "Erma Bombeck with attitude." Who else but Wall could blithely recount flying first class next to a call girl and trying on her fifteen-hundred-dollar "chocolate for your feet" shoes? "Oooooh, yes!" Now, America's wry new humorist--whose award-winning newspaper column "Off the Wall" is syndicated nationwide--casts her penetrating eye on everything from felines to Elvis, dieting to weed whackers, country living to sexy French tour guides. With her innate irreverence and sharp-as-nails sense of humor, she raises ordinary life to fiercely funny new heights.
Younger men: "If you fall in love with a younger guy, it's like trying to have a relationship with a jockey strap. There's just no give, and expansion is totally out of the question."
Speeding: "Traffic police are a mystery to me. As far as I'm concerned, it's just not natural for a guy to stop a woman for going too fast."
Past loves: "Old lovers are like socks. They always show up full of static cling and missing their mate."
Convictions: "There's nothing I hate more than having my convictions put to the test. That's why I try not to have any."
Cars: "Buying a truck is like dating. If you're not careful, you'll end up paying for that test drive the rest of your life."
Politics: "In our neck of the woods, 'politically correct' means mounting your Rush Limbaugh sticker on the right side of the bumper."
There's just no stopping a woman with a "smart-aleck streak as wide as she claims her posterior to be." * Both acerbic and playful, If I Were A Man, I'd Marry Me is humor with a savvy sting.
* Minneapolis Star Tribune
Customer Reviews:
Hillarious.......2006-04-08
Walls takes life and makes it into stories you can laugh about. The hooker story is the first and it is hillarious as the others. They are cleverly written. Read all of her works with girl friends.
All that southern charm..........2006-02-04
I loved The Rock Orchard and had to read something else by P.S. (Paula) Wall. If I Were a Man, I'd Marry Me is a collection of short stories taken from a column she used to write (or still writes, not sure) that center on quirky southern characters and situations. She does the same here as she did in The Rock Orchard -- write some quirky, surrealistic takes of ordinary, every day people. Her wit is priceless in this collection and I enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed her novel. My favorite stories are "Maxine's Diet," "Faithful," "The Mortician," "Harley," "Warming the Bench," "Topless," "The Ghost of Elvis," "Chivalry," and "Fruitcake." I guess the one disappointing thing about this collection is that the stories are very short -- about three or four pages each. Other than that, I loved If I Were a Man, I'd Marry Me and I hope to read more stuff by this talented writer.
Great stress relief.......2000-08-30
After a tough day I can count on P.S. Wall to lift my spirits. Wall has a gift for putting everyday occurances into a humerous perspective. Reading her stories makes you feel like you are a part of her group. And what a fun loving group it is! You go girl... and take me with you.
We Have Wall Moments Now.......2000-08-10
The other day, my husband and I got a crazy waitress at a Shoneys. As we walked outside after lunch, we burst into laughter and agreed that we'd just had a Wall Moment. I could almost read the article she would have written about the incident. Buy this book, and soon you'll be having Wall Moments too.
If I Were A Man, I'd Marry Me draws you into P. S. Wall's slightly skewed universe. The same things happen to her that happen to all of us -- she finds and writes about the absurdity, the humor and the craziness of ordinary life. I'll never look at a dipstick or chocolate brown shoes the same way again.
Wall's book is filled with friends and family you want to be part of. You follow Rosie and Maxine and even Cat from adventrue to mis-adventure with constant chuckling, but also a growing sense of familiarity. These are your people. I met Sweetie once at a conference -- believe me, he lives up to his hype.
Though consistently out there, Wall's universe remains grounded in reality. She doesn't avoid tough questions -- "If you dream about another man," one character asks, "is that being unfaithful?" Of course, the man they all dream about turns out to be Al Gore -- go figure. Wall tackles emotional insecurity, the tribulations of being single, the difficulties as well as the rewards of marriage. Perhaps that's what makes these essays more than just fun to read once. Like Mark Twain or Erma Bombeck, P. S. Wall writes about our real lives, and we want to return to her again and again.
You can catch P. S. Wall at uexpress.com, and I'd travel 1000 miles to her her speak in person -- she's that good. But right now, for a good healthy dose of vintage Wall, buy If I Were A Man, I'd Marry Me. I guarantee you'll laugh on every page, and pretty soon you'll be having Wall Moments too.
Super Southern humor!.......1999-11-30
P.S. Wall is just as funny in person as she is in print. She's the kind of storyteller that you want to take home, sat her on the hearth and let her entertain you for the rest of your life. This writer is a well kept secret who is destined to become one of the great Southern humorists of all time.

Customer Reviews:
Your steel drum may have a different configuration.......2007-10-03
This is a great book for learning the Steel Drums. Was recommended to my by others. Although this book contains different Steel Drum layouts, your steel drum may have a different configuration
Disappointing at best.......2002-03-21
Having bought a steel drum, I was all ready to learn how to play it. I have to agree with the other reviewer that it's very disappointing - I know how to read music and know a little about chords, etc., but this book was still just about worthless. It had some info about playing chords that would be found in any music book, and the info on techniques was next to worthless - just a sentence or two, as the other reviewer said. The clips are songs you probably wouldn't want to play and just short little parts of them. The author, who really is a great steel drum player, should've given us at least a tiny example of what really can be done with a steel drum. Also the other types of drums - double seconds, basses, etc. are not even mentioned. There is no info on sources of supplies, music, drums, etc., which really is needed for such a relatively rare instrument. Save yourself the money and try to find an instructor!!
Novice Beware!.......2001-07-29
Unless you already know how to play a musical instrument (or at least know how to read music) this book will be of little value to you. Actually, it's not so much a book as it is a pamphlet. The only thing it accomplishes is that it shows you where the notes are on the pan.
After a few introductory words, here is the 6th sentence in the "book":
"The tuning consists of a circle of 5ths or 4ths, there are two circles of a complete octave and one circle of five notes. The range of the drum is from middle C up two octaves and a major third to E."
If that quote doesn't mean anything to you, don't expect to really understand it after reading the pamphlet. Admittedly, the words are, in fact, followed by two diagrams that show what "up a 4th" and "down a 5th" mean. But add that to all the following discussion about scales, and you still have no idea why any of it matters.
The section entitled "Technique" consists of a picture of a hand holding a drum stick and the words: "The stick has to be able to bounce off the notes. There is a slightly tighter grip employed when sticking the higher notes..." Add to that the handy note to play the left side of the drum with the left hand and the right side with the right hand and...well...I guess you're ready to start practicing sticking, because there's not much more info on the subject.
Finally, the CD consists of 30-second clips, not complete songs. Oh yeh, unless you know how to read music, there's no clue as to where even the first note is in any of the "songs".
Begining Steel Drum.......1999-12-19
This is a wonderful book for learning how to play steel drums. Since there is not alot of infromation out in the world about this beautiful instrament, it is a pleasure to see such a work. I whole-heartedly recomend this book to anyone wishing to learn the art of steel drum, and I hope everyone finds what they are looking for in this this book. I know I have!

This testimony to working life illuminates the stories, adventures, and wisdom of New York transit workers. More than 100 transit workers were interviewed to discover just what goes on behind the scenes of public transportation. The challenges are legion: the danger of working next to high-voltage power lines in a system that operates 24 hours a day for 7 days a week; workers risking their own lives to save others, an act that often leaves them as witnesses to pain and death. In their testimonies, workers express the importance of bonding with their colleagues for protection as well as companionship.
Then there are the scams that workers cope with daily, such as the "blind" man who puts egg membrane in his eyes to implement his begging routine; "token suckers" who use soda cans to trap fare tokens for resale; holdups and gang activities that make many workers' jobs even more difficult and dangerous. For most passengers, the transit workers are a nearly invisible part of their own daily routine. Snyder's book gives transit workers both voices and names. --Susan Swartwout

Customer Reviews:
Well, he's no Peter Haining..........2004-09-28
Peter Haining has written what I believe are the best Doctor Who reference books. Justin Richards wrote a really cool book, one that is graphically quite nicely done, but that's actually about it. It's all information we've seen in several other books, but this time it's presented in a quasi-disjoint visual style. Sometimes it works, but other times it's just plain distracting. This one is more flash than substance. I wouldn't advise buying the book. Ask for it as a present, and that way you can spend your cash on something better about the series.
Just ok.......2004-01-24
This book has received a lot of flack since its release. People complain that it's just a "rehash" of information we already have and doesn't offer much else. The whole purpose for this book was to be a CELEBRATION of Dr Who's 40th anniversary, nothing more!
I had heard about the extensive amount of photos (many never before seen) in the book, which is the only reason why I wanted it. None of my local bookstores had the book in stock for me to preview so I decided to risk it and order it.
I was very disappointed for these reasons:
-As a photo album, it was just ok. There were a few photos that I hadn't seen before, but many of them were either too small, or made into a faded background behind the text!
-The information was unorganized. The stories didn't even have a description, just some random things like the occupations of some of the characters, or how the sonic screwdriver was used in the story!?
-Randomly thrown throughout the book were articles about things like special effects, music, etc.
-The design of the book was amateurish. ie: Each page had about eight different fonts on it!
Overall, they tried to squeeze FAR TOO MUCH into this book. The result was that every aspect of the book was lacking. The "60's," "70's," and "80's" books are much better. Why couldn't they have just made this a huge photo book entitled "Dr Who - A Pictoral Celebration?"
Great book for Doctor Who fans.......2003-12-17
This book was produced by BBC Books to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Doctor Who. It's not as detailed as some other books about the show, but it makes up for it by featuring many photographs illustrating the shows history as well as being extremely well designed. This is the sort of book that is an essential purchase for more recent converts to the series who may have missed out on now out-of-print non-fiction hardcover volumes written by authors like Peter Haining, David J Howe and Stephen James Walker, etc over the last few decades. And unlike those books, this book is right up to date, featuring coverage of the 2003 webcast story starring Richard E.Grant called 'The Scream Of The Shalka' and mentioning the upcoming new television series.
If you already have a multitude of books about the series filling up your bookcase, then you could probably give this book a miss as it doesn't offer up any new information...but if you are a casual fan or someone who's new to Doctor Who fandom then you'll love this book. Even if you are a longtime fan, you may still appreciate this lavishly illustrated and handsome volume.
A beautiful book!.......2003-12-09
Fully detailed with text and photos, some that haven't been seen before, this book is a definite must have for Doctor Who fans. From the days of William Hartnell, to the very recent news of Doctor Who's return to television in 2005, this book has everything you want to know about every episode. Plus for those that were not around during Hartnell and PARTICULARLY Troughton's era, younger fans can read about episodes of these two Doctors (First and Second) which no longer exist in full format, or not at all, due to being erased by the BBC. A wonderful book!

Great Book.......2007-02-23
I love this book. It has some really good information in it about all the doctors up until the 9th one and their companions. I think it is one of the best and coolest books available to all Doctor Who fans.
One for me.......2007-01-16
I went searching for Dr. Who books for my nine-year-old fanatic and came up with this one for me. All the doctors, all the companions, all the episodes. A neat resource though I wouldn't have minded still more background info.
A little of evrything.......2006-08-20
I like it because it because it is a book because it has a liitle of everything in it on the doctors and their time travels.
Doctor Who: The Legend Continues (Dr. Who).......2006-08-02
If anyone is an avid Dr. Who fan from the Dr. Who #1 to #10, or a recent fan of the Dr. Who Series, they will want to purchase this book. The information in it is invaluable, that is why I gave this book (5 STARS).

Doctor Who: The Legend Continues.......2006-03-22
I'd actually seen the earlier hardcover version of this book when a friend bought it, and I'd wanted to get a copy for myself. Unfortunately, I never did scrape up the money, and I'd thought my chance was gone. Then this revised version (expanded to include the entire Eccleston run and a preview of Tennant's upcoming series) came out, and I was more than happy to pick up a copy.
For those who have not seen the book, it is furnished with an abundance of photos, and it eschews the standard `episode guide' format by focusing on bits of information (both on screen and behind the scenes) rather than providing episode synopses. While I found that to be a selling point (after all, most of the audience for this book already knows what happened in the stories), I know that some people found that to be a bit annoying.
Overall, the book functions as a nice visual reference (I'm an artist by nature, so that's the first thing I thought of) and as a good coffee table `conversation piece', and it does contain a bit or two of information that I'd not seen elsewhere. If you're looking for a comprehensive Doctor Who guide, though, I'd recommend Mad Norwegian's `About Time' series rather than `Doctor Who: The Legend Continues.'

Good Textbook.......2007-03-15
Purchased this for a computer science course since it was required. Great price at Amazon!
Needs a good instructor to go along with it.......2006-05-09
An excellent reference, but it is an embarassment of riches, and as such it can't completely cover every area exhaustively. This would probably be extremely frustrating for a casual reader to absorb. I used this as a text book for a class with an extremely good instructor who backed up the material in the book very well. As such, the class and the book were a joy.
Hard.......2005-10-28
Even though the topics of this book are absolutely great and crucial for any CS student, I dislike the entire book !, its hard to follow the writer, i find it hard to keep with him !
too many complicated information with either Tiny explaination or more complicated explaination ,
its a very big book with many topics , i prefer reading seperate books with specific topics rather than this book,
Nice Book!.......2005-05-25
I just completed a college course using this textbook... the course was tough, but the book was very good and useful. This is one textbook I won't be selling any time soon!
The practice problems provided in the book were usually very good, and the programming problems distributed with it were fun and educational, including topics like Buffer Overflows, Memory Optimizations, and Debugging with GDB, among others.
There are *some* problems with this book, but it doesn't suffer from the devastating flaws that plague most computer science textbooks. Some sections lack thorough explanations and examples, and the writting is a bit unclear at times. Some solutions to the practice problems are vague and don't really provide much insight on how to solve the problems. Luckily, these flaws only creep up in a few places.
Compared to most technical textbooks, however, this one really shines. It's not quite perfect, so I think 4 stars is appropriate.
Everything you need to know as a programmer.......2005-03-25
What a splendid book! I wish I has gone to CMU and take this course. This book is written by CMU professors after teaching Computer Systems course for few years. This book covers broad spectrum of topics from Operating Systems, Compilers, Computer Architecture, Assembly Level Programming, Kernel internals, Linkers, etc from a programmer's perspective (as the title aptly says).
I am searching for words to describe the usefulness of this book. In my experience, I have had hard time learning some of the topics where Operating systems, Processor and Compilers intersect. For example, Linkers and Loaders, program disassembly using reverse-engineering, virtual memory in Kernel etc. After all the hard work, I found the right book which grinds all the famous books in different areas and gives the right juice for the real programmers to taste and digest.
Those famous books are:
[1] Computer Organization and Design Second Edition : The Hardware/Software Interface by David A. Patterson, John L. Hennessy
[2] UNIX Internals: The New Frontiers by Uresh Vahalia
[3] Linux Kernel Development by Robert Love
[4] Linkers and Loaders by John R. Levine
[5] GNU Binutils (GAS, objdump, ar, nm etc) Documentation
Excellent job. I really appreciate the work and content of this book.
