Communication coach Tony Jeary estimates that we make one hundred presentations every day. He tells readers, "Whether you are talking to a soccer coach or potential client, the way you present your thoughts and ideas to people have a profound effect on the shape of your life." Jeary paves the road to friendly persuasion with theory and practice in Life is a Series of Presentations.

Drawing upon established research in the psychology of influence and neuro-linguistic programming, he guides readers to define their "presentation universe" by using a "3 Dimension" (what-why-how) outline. Although Jeary introduces eight general practices of successful presenters, he shines in describing the practical nuances of presentations including how to: do homework to understand an audience, cut tensions that interfere with rapport, give an audience breathing space, handle hecklers, wrestle stage fright to the ground, and build a presentation arsenal of anecdotes.

A call to self-awareness adds depth to his strategies. For example, one insightful chapter lists eight inhibitors (such as perfectionism, desire to please, aloofness, and good student syndrome) that sabotage presentations. Another section focuses on the anatomy of how to say "thank-you"--and what it communicates about a speaker's self regard. At times, the chapters suffer from too many theories backing up Jeary's smart suggestions. But this is an insightful book on how to change someone's mind. --Barbara Mackoff

5 out of 5 stars Good book, if you are not a professional presenter........2006-08-13

I'm not a professional presenter, but as a manager I'm constantly faced with this challenge. The book is the first one I purchase on the subject and I'm quite pleased with what I red. His tips are well presented and structured with useful real world examples. The reading is easy, logical and builds up. Overall I definitely think is worth the money. Again, it may not be material for a professional, but if you want to improve your daily presentations (very interesting point of view that this book introduces) and sail a little easier in life, definitely worth your money.

As daily presentation he points out that every time we have an important speech (and for him this may be you daily review with your peers, boss, staff, or a chat with your neighbors, wife, etc) if you spend a little time preparing for this you can gain tremendously. It makes sense, and is actually very wise. Something we take for granted and pay very little attention. I've already started to "prepare" for phone calls with my boss and staff. Runs much easier and I'm gaining trust from my staff and growing under my boss's eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Good read....great advice...a keeper! .......2006-05-02

I'm a pretty experienced presenter (to groups and one-on-one) and I found this book quite helpful. For anyone whose success depends on their ability to influence, you'll want to read this book. Many, many good points--especially the emphasis on preparation. Most people give lip-service to preparation, Tony lives it! The stories are great and teach a lot. It's an easy read...and was definitely worth my time.

For people looking for help (especially) with formal presentations, I'd also recommend You Are The Message, by Roger Ailes.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-07-20

I was expecting a book on presentations and was disappointed. The book had some anecdotes about the author's life that were okay but I was left uninspired. Of course, every encounter you have in business can be judged just as if you were doing a presentation, but this needs to be the subject of a whole book? I don't think so.

Wrong book for the right person; wrong person for the right book.

4 out of 5 stars Good information but ..........2004-11-15

The author uses the book to sell us that everything we do is a presentation. He is right of course, but I like his more simple, to the point 136 Effective Presenation Tips and Inspire Any Audience. A lot of the same information in a more useable format.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with Knowledge!.......2004-08-04

The book jacket bills author Tony Jeary as "coach to America's top CEOs." It doesn't identify them, but the author clearly has a certain bold presentational style, and stressing his identity as a expert coach could be both a strategic and an educational tactic. The book's content is evergreen, a mixture of hortatory slogans and amusing anecdotes, all designed to make you a better presenter - whether your audience is one listener or an auditorium full of people. The author's advice is, for the most part, solid, detailed, practical and conservative. Don't be too put off by a few dated examples (Bill Clinton and Gary Condit) and if you're pressed for time just read the handy lists of "very important points" that close each chapter. We assure you that you can't waste time reading this book. It's that useful.

    Book Description

This volume explains recent theoretical developments in the econometric modelling of relationships between different statistical series. The statistical techniques explored analyse relationships between different variables, over time, such as the relationship between variables in a macroeconomy. Examples from Professor Terasvirta's empirical work are given. Professors Granger and Terasvirta are leading exponents of techniques of dynamic, multivariate analysis. They illustrate in this volume exploratory ways of using such techniques to provide models of nonlinear relationships between variables. This is an extension of previous work on linear relationships, and on univariate models. These developments will be of use to econometricians wishing to construct and use models of nonlinear, dynamic, multivariate relationships, such as an investment function, or a production function. Particular attention is paid to the case of a single dependent variable modelled by a few explanatory variables and the lagged dependent variable in nonlinear form. The book concentrates on stochastic series, since the existence of unexpected shocks strongly suggests that economic variables are stochastic. Granger and Terasvirta also discuss the division of these nonlinear relationships into parametric and nonparametric models.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for any researcher and econometrics student.......2003-12-29

This book is highly influential. Many works on nonlinear modelling have cited this book. Written by one of the Noble econometricians, this book is surprisingly not hard to follow.
The explanations are clear and concise. Theories, modelling strategies, and empirical applications are covered in detailed. If you are a researcher or student wanted to learn state-of-the-art techniques in nonlinear modelling, this book is a good start.

4 out of 5 stars More nonlinear than modelling.......2000-05-14

A good book by Clive Granger and Timo Teräsvirta, whose attention on nonlinearities in econometrics has been producing several interesting results especially as far as economic modelling is concerned. This text mainly deals with nonlinear time series and helps the reader understand the basic results of nonlinear stochastic equations. Several common nonlinear models are presented and dealt with, and an extention of the linear concept of integration is provided. The main problems in this book are the lack of a full dynamical system approach that makes some results rather difficult to be understood for the reader and therefore the loss of generality in the explanation of the concepts. It's anyway a good book that studies in a deep way bilinear and smooth transition autoregressive models from a theoretical point of view. I also found it extremely clear, which is a common characteristic of Granger's texts, and I would recommend it to all the econometricians who already have a good knowledge of nonlinear deterministic systems and want to understand stochastic nonlinear models better.

        Book Description

"General-equilibrium" refers to an analytical approach which looks at the economy as a complete system of inter-dependent components (industries, households, investors, governments, importers and exporters). "Applied" means that the primary interest is in systems that can be used to provide quantitative analysis of economic policy problems in particular countries. Reflecting the authors' belief in the models as vehicles for practical policy analysis, a considerable amount of material on data and solution techniques as well as on theoretical structures has been included. The sequence of chapters follows what is seen as the historical development of the subject.

The book is directed at graduate students and professional economists who may have an interest in constructing or applying general equilibrium models. The exercises and readings in the book provide a comprehensive introduction to applied general equilibrium modeling. To enable the reader to acquire hands-on experience with computer implementations of the models which are described in the book, a companion set of diskettes is available.

              Book Description

In Engaging Humor, Elliott Oring asks essential questions concerning humorous expression in contemporary society, examining how humor works, why it is employed, and what its messages might be. This provocative book is filled with examples of jokes and riddles that reveal humor to be a meaningful--even significant--form of expression.

Oring scrutinizes classic Jewish jokes, frontier humor, racist cartoons, and contemporary joke cycles. He provides alternate ways of thinking about humorous expressions by examining their contexts--not just their contents. Arguing that incongruity and absurdity are key elements of humor, Oring also asserts that humor is a form of play and that playing with ideas does not require us to endorse them.

Analyzed contextually and comparatively, humorous expressions emerge as forms of human communication whose implications are startling, engaging, and profound. Engaging Humor explores Freud's theory that every thought contains a joke. Oring suggests that racist humor is not rooted in repression and offers a new perspective on other forms of humor seemingly based on hatred, including the recent blonde joke cycle. Oring also addresses the use of jokes as commentaries on the conversations in which they are embedded and considers the similarities in the humorous traditions of the United States, Australia, and Israel--each formed through colonization in modern times.

The book does reveal some juicy details about people like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, & Ava Gardener, but on others they hardly mention their "sex lives." Its more of a book about who dated who rather than who slept with who.

"Watching What We Watch" is very readable, thought-provoking, and topical. The authors have put together a model for how to watch television, offering an insights that are sure to prompt discussion. From "The Simpsons" to "ER", from "Moesha" to "Will and Grace," the book gave me pause, asking questions about where God fit into my viewing habits. I passed this book along to our Discussion Group at church, with the strong recommendation that we use a chapter (or two) as a springboard for talking about spirituality and the media.

"A useful guide from a principled point of view for coming to grips with the TV ritual."
--George Gerbner, Dean Emeritus, The Annenberg School of
                      Communications, University of Pennsylvania

"Television is a sizeable part of everyday life in America. This book shows provocatively, why and how television might be an important part of our everyday faith."
--Tom Beaudoin, author of "Virtual Faith: Irreverant Spiritual Quest of Generation X

"This is an engaging and throughly researched volume which brings together scholars in the fields of theological study, communication, and visual literacy in a compelling and easy-to- read volume."
--Jeffrey H. Mahan, Professor of Ministry, Media and Culture, Iliff School of Theology

"The value of 'Watching What We Watch' is that it makes us sit up and take notice of the cognitive and spiritual impact of even the most apparently trivial program. It has been estimated that the average viewer devotes eight years over a lifetime to gazing at the small screen, this book will help ensure that these are not wasted years."
--Chris Arthur, Senior Lecturer in Religious Studies, University of Wales

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Media Educators in Faith Communities.......2001-12-08

In the maelstrom following the release of the Harry Potter film, it is refreshing to read such thoughtful analysis of our television culture. Harry not on the small screen yet? Oh yes, he is. Advertisments (Coke, literacy and HP), TV specials (Katie Couric looking for Platform 9 3/4 for an hour) and commercials galore, HP is everywhere.

It's exactly this kind of awareness that can help parents, religious educators and pastoral ministers learn about media literacy themselves and then profit from a book like WATCHING WHAT WE WATCH.

Take the chapter on ER for example. Mark Scalese disucusses how power relations function in television as a dominant culture and in how the program is crafted.

More than anything, and to link this back to the Harry Potter phenomenon, is the commercialization: the commerce of television, and by extension, all information and entertainment media. It's useless to drone on about the "effects" or influence of television without considering the money... an issue this book deals with well.

Most helpful are the appendices with guidelines on how to "read" television, worksheets for analyzing television (criteria) shows and various lesson plans. Any thoughtful parent or teacher can make this book work for them.

And more than anything, for the media academic, it has an INDEX!

I am glad I bought this book!

                            Book Description

How is religion portrayed on prime time entertainment television and what effect does this have on our society? This book brings together the opinions of all the important factions involved in this important public policy debate, including religious figures (Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and Freethinkers--liberal and conservative), academics, media critics and journalists, and representatives of the entertainment industry. The debate provides contrasting views on how much and what type of religion should be on entertainment television and what relationship this has with the health of our society. Many contributors also offer strategies for how to reform the present situation. This is an important work that delineates the debate for the layperson as well as researchers, scholars, and policymakers.

If you want to learn C++ network programming architecture , design patterns and want the source code to be portable , this is the book for you . If you cant afford to have your own copy at least suggest your company to buy it . If your in C++ network programming and dont use ACE , think again , you might be reinventing the wheel.

4 out of 5 stars Good ACE book.......2006-02-16

ACE becomes popular in the world of system programming these years because of it's portability, low difficulty by providing wrapper encapsulating the complexity of low-level thread usage. However, going on development on ACE without thorough knowledges of system level details is hazardous and therefore further readings are recommended.(e.g. Hart's book)

3 out of 5 stars Quite not what I expected it to be.......2003-09-17

After reading the Vol. 1, I expected quite a bit from the volume 2. May be I am not there yet to understand what the authors are trying to emphasize here. I found some of the material from vol.1 covered to much deeper extend. But the framework from the reusability point of view is missing. Some of the topics covered here are great indeed, especially chapter 5, 6 and 7. Other than that I found this book to be a quick browse and keep it away.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written book for eligant power code warriors.......2003-01-03

This is a well written book documenting many of the eligant and powerful frameworks and idioms used in the ACE library. I've been using ACE for over 7 years to implement portable, concurrent, networked, distributed applications and it's great to see a well-written book like this finally being published. I would highly recommend it as a must have reference for all serious ACE programmers who strive to develop powerful, flexible and portable networked applications. It is also an extremely valuable resource for programmers who want to get introduced and up and running on the concepts and application of some very valuable frameworks.

5 out of 5 stars Open-Source Framework Facilitates Network Programming.......2002-12-10

Writing networked applications using modern operating
systems and languages looks like it should be easy, but it
is emphatically not. The na‹ve designer of networked
applications will encounter a thicket of problems including
lack of portability, distributed performance bottlenecks,
maintaining correctness during shutdown, and managing
                                      recovery from partial failures.

"C++ Network Programming, Volume 2, Systematic Reuse with
ACE and Frameworks" by Douglas Schmidt and Stephen Huston

provides some powerful help in the design and implementation
of networked applications. This help comes in the form of
                                      several frameworks.

A few words about the definition of "framework." The first
step up from writing applications that interface directly
with operating systems is to insert object-oriented wrappers
between the application and lower level services. These
wrappers are classes that encapsulate the low level,
functionally specified, services such as operating systems

and protocol stacks. This first step was taken in the
predecessor volume to the present book, "C++ Network
Programming, Volume 1: Mastering Complexity with ACE and
Patterns", by the same authors, where a collection of
wrappers, called the ACE wrappers, is provided that not only
raises the level of the application interface from
functional to object-oriented, but also provides portability
                                      at the same time.

For example, consider an application that directly uses
sockets. This application would depend on the syntax and
functional details of that operating system's s operating
system's socket implementation. By inserting the ACE
wrappers, the application acquires an object interface to
socket capabilities, and in addition becomes portable across
a large number of compilers, operating systems, and
                                      communication protocols.

But a set of wrapper classes does not solve the networked
application designer's problems, any more than a pile of
                                      bricks is a house.

Frameworks, which are the subject of the present book, are
the next step up in power from wrappers. A framework is an
integrated set of classes into which application designers
plug code that is unique to their applications. The
frameworks described in the present book handle a large part
of the difficulty inherent in network programming, leaving
application designers to deal primary with their
                                      applications' local functionality.

For example, one of the frameworks described in the book is
the Acceptor-Connector Framework. This framework relieves
the user of dealing with the numerous tricky details
inherent in the conceptually simple process of connecting
clients with servers, such as address formats, protocols,
                                      initialization, and message queue locking.

Readers should be aware that the present book is not a
general-purpose text on network programming using C++; this
book is a focused exposition of the ACE frameworks. Readers
will be most comfortable reading this book if they are
already familiar with software design and architecture
patterns, including those described in "Pattern-Oriented
Software Architecture: Patterns for Concurrent and Networked
Objects, Volume 2" by Douglas Schmidt et al, and in the
famous Gang of Four book: "Design Patterns: Elements of
Reusable Object-Oriented Software" by Eric Gamma et al.

The large amount of code that implements the wrappers of
volume 1 and the frameworks of volume 2 is available for
download for free. This code is in wide use today.

Designers of networked applications, when offered a large
pile of code that purports to do a lot of what needs to be
done, must trade off the anticipated saving in design and
implementation time against the anticipated time to
understand what the offered code is intended to do and what
it actually does. This tradeoff can lead a reasonable
designer to ignore existing code in favor of hand-writing an
entire application. In the case of the ACE wrappers and
frameworks, as documented and explained by the two books
mentioned here, combined with the open-source nature of the
implementing code and its widespread employment in real
applications, make the result of this tradeoff pretty clear:
read the books, use the code.
