Very useful - but not gospel truth........2007-06-14

Bob Katz knows his stuff. I thought I was an experienced engineer and knew quite a bit already, but Bob goes into details here that I have hitherto not explored. However, Bob is a little on the snobby side when it comes to his opinions (which are never stated as such) on certain technologies. So take what he says with a grain of salt.

I think this book is meant for advanced engineers, and will likely confuse those who are amateurs or just getting started in the audio engineering field. It's chapter order is somewhat random, and he doesn't quite seem to know just who his audience is. He assumes different levels of prerequisite knowledge on different subjects... The man is obviously more an engineer and less an educator and writer.

It contains very valuable knowledge - just be prepared to tread water occasionally. :-)

Clearly written book on the role and basic techniques of mastering audio. More of an introduction than an advanced text, so very accessible and written with some humor and personality. Good emphasis on monitoring, philosophy, goals, and techniques instead of the gadgets. Recommended.

Even if you never plan to master your own recordings this is an awsome book to get. It truely is the next book to get after "the recording engineers hand book". Gets deeper into compression, mixing, micing, phase, etc.

I have been wanting to purchase this book for quite some time now because I have heard such good things. When I finally made the purchase I was amazed. This book is full of so much great information. Bob tells it in a clear and understandable way, even though the content is advanced. In the end, he never forgets about the art and music as the reason for all of the science. If you are an audio engineer and want to further your knowledge on mastering and/or advanced audio concepts, this is the book for you.

Perfect competition provides the model of a frictionless economy, in which price-setting economic agents behave independently of each other, abandoning to the market the coordination of their individual decisions. This work deals with the transmission of monetary policy through the bank loan market, in the presence of a capital requirement regulation. Unlike standard models, based on the ''representative bank'' shortcut, we adopt the heterogeneous agents approach: this allows us to explicitly model the strategic interaction between well-capitalized and under-capitalized banks. The main results are the following. (I) The propagation of a monetary policy impulse through the loan market differs considerably, depending on the market structure: under monopolistic competition, strategic complementarity among well-capitalized banks leads to a ''multiplier effect''; in the Cournot oligopoly framework, an effect of the opposite sign is at work, due to strategic substitutability. (II) Well-capitalized banks are more important, in shaping the adjustment following a monetary policy shock, than what is implied by their relative number over total; this fact strengthens the monetary policy effectiveness. This result holds under both monopolistic competition and oligopoly, although the interaction among banks, leading to such a result, differs across the two banking structures.

This paper studies the strategic interaction between informal and formal lenders in undeveloped credit markets. In a model with adverse selection, loan seniority, market power, and differences in the cost of lending, it is shown that under general conditions a co-funding equilibrium will be a Nash outcome of the game. We demonstrate that a collateral requirement in connection with formal loans always generates a new co-funding equilibrium in which both lenders earn higher profits. A government subsidy to the formal lender may have the opposite effect. We relate our results to existing empirical evidence and the emerging discussion of how to best ensure financial viability and outreach of microfinance institutions.

There's nothing contained in this book that couldn't be found with a web search using google. Most cigar websites have the same information readily available for surfers. A complete waste of 226 pages of good paper.

The best cigar book I've ever read.......1998-12-28

I must have accumulated over a dozen books on cigars over the years... this one stands out far above the rest. Not only does Dr. Camarda really now his stuff, but he presents everything you need to know about buying/smoking/storing cigars in detail and with a great sense of humor. It's a lot of fun to read (and hard to put down), extremely informative, and offers tons of valuable 'inside' information that simply cannot be found in book form anywhere else.

All in all, I highly recommend it. If you only own one book on cigars, "The Sensible Cigar Connoisseur" is the one to have.

There are MISTAKES in the tab.......2007-03-02

Overall a good source, however certain songs have several mistakes. The tapping section of "Eruption" is tabbed on the "G" string! WRONG! Its played in different positions and on the "B" string!! The last part of the solo in "On Fire" is also incorrectly tabbed on the "G" string, Again, should be the "B" string. Many other subtle mistakes are found throughout. So if you are already versed in the Van Halen style, you will KNOW where the mistakes are, if you are not, most assuredly confusion and frustration will ensue. CAVEAT EMPTOR!

You've got to have some experience with tabs before otherwise you'll

Confusing and hard to understand.......2004-09-29

As others have pointed out, this is definitely not a book for beginners. But what's worse is that its not very well written. The phrases and sentences are sometimes confusing. While some appear to be good examples, usually they are not well explained. I hate to be this harsh, but the book often has sentences for the sake of having sentences! I would not recommend this book to anyone other than someone who wants a quick reference of IS architecture. There are other books that do a better job of explaining this subject.

As a student taking a technical look at computers from a non technical background this book dances the fine line of too little detail, and being too technical. I recomend it highly, and use it frequently as a reference around the office.

Too hard!.......2002-12-26

The is the required textbook for one of my papers( i was doing Software Engineering program), I found it is hard to understand and there are few example, even if there are some examples, i just cannot understand,quite confusing! I finally gave up that paper and changed to another program :P
Maybe you should find this book quite easy.

Complete, Thorough, and not for Beginners.......2002-12-06

This book extensively covers the topics in depth, and does a good job at making a complicated subject easy to understand. While for the most part Irv does a good job of communicating technical material in an easy to understand manner, you can only simplify technical details so much, and this book is certainly not for beginners.

After taking the author's class in the subject, I've come to understand that by the end of the book you might hate the author, but at least you'll learn something. One of the more challenging subjects, but you can learn a great deal from this book. Because it's a book in architecture, however, it's important to keep in mind that a great deal of this book is theoretical and not specifically practical to everyday computer usage.

Hard to read, not for beginners.......2002-03-21

The book is difficult to read and is definitely not aimed at beginners. Complex concepts are addressed without solid support for the lower-level concepts of which they are comprised. In effect, the book takes a complex subject, throws acronyms and abbreviated concepts at it, then moves on. Additionally, the glossary is not well-organized and the book has quite a few typographical errors.

This book is only helpful for extremely young children that want to learn about basic computer architecture. There is extremely little redeeming value about this book. The explanations of basic concepts are ludicrously laughable. The title should be changed from "The Architecture of Computer Hardware and Systems Software: An Information Technology Approach" to "Watered Down Computer Architecture that is even too basic and elementary for even dummies and idiots". Any money spent on this book is better spent on a pyramid scheme.

If you want to learn about computer architecture, I would recommend: "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach" by John Hennessy and David Patterson.

A comfortable and well-written read.......2000-04-18

This book is an excellent introduction for those familiar with computers, but is neither for dummies nor for rocket scientists.

It is a well-balanced book suitable for both IT students and those working in the industry who want to know what goes on in PCs and system servers. The clean layout, the sequence of information presentation and the author's writing style makes this diffcult topic a joy to read about.

Some criticism - the presentation of numbers could be reduced, the appendices on logic could be expanded and a chapter on client-server architecture would be the icing on the cake. Another worthy book but a bit dry is 'Silberschatz et al.'. Check it out before you buy.

Embedded systems are informally defined as a collection of programmable parts surrounded by ASICs and other standard components, that interact continuously with an environment through sensors and actuators. The programmable parts include micro-controllers and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs).
Embedded systems are often used in life-critical situations, where reliability and safety are more important criteria than performance. Today, embedded systems are designed with an ad hoc approach that is heavily based on earlier experience with similar products and on manual design. Use of higher-level languages such as C helps structure the design somewhat, but with increasing complexity it is not sufficient. Formal verification and automatic synthesis of implementations are the surest ways to guarantee safety.
Thus, the POLIS system which is a co-design environment for embedded systems is based on a formal model of computation.
POLIS was initiated in 1988 as a research project at the University of California at Berkeley and, over the years, grew into a full design methodology with a software system supporting it.
Hardware-Software Co-Design of Embedded Systems: The POLIS Approach is intended to give a complete overview of the POLIS system including its formal and algorithmic aspects.
