An excellent book, from an excellent professor........2007-08-15

I think most texts on econometrics are heavy on math and light on memorable information. This text uses a conversational style to make its many points. The end result is that the book doesn't put you off the subject. I took a couple of courses with Dr. Halcoussis at Cal State Northridge, one of which was intro to econometrics. We used this book and it definitely made the subject easier to understand. Today, I use this book mainly as a reference on the subject, for a required course at a grad school I'm studying finance at. I think Dr. Halcoussis's econ courses seemed easier to me than other econ courses mainly because of the uncluttered language he used when he lectured. I think that same way of communicating shows up in his book, and that's why I recommend it.

Made learning stats painless.......2007-07-22

This book explains complicated topics in a clear and engaging manner. Math is not my strongest point but with the aid of this textbook I gained a very good understanding of the concepts and did well in my exam. The book has understandable definitions and helpful examples in every chapter. The friendly tone and voice make the text a pleasure to read. I think you could teach yourself stats using this book. Highly recommended.

Making Econometrics Easy.......2006-01-29

I have to admit, econometrics can be a very difficult subject to tackle. There are books that are very mathematial in their approach which can lead the reader astray. However, Dennis Halcoussis has found the bridge that allows the undergrad. to comprehend this most difficult subject. In the first few pages, Halcoussis even tells the reader about how other textbooks can simply loose students in theory and mathematics! This is very true, just go pick up one of many econometric textbooks.

After thumbing through Woolridge's Introduction to Econometrics, I knew that I needed another econometrics text that would serve as a better medium and would allow me to quickly understand topics like autocorrelation, heteroskedacity, and time-series data. Halcoussis has found the appropriate balance. He offers some of the math behind the theorems and regressions if the reader is interested. Although, this book is rock solid for reader comprehendibility, it does not allow the economics grad. student to see everything that he needs. So, it may be wise to supplement this text with another of the more theoretical and mathematical texts. But overall, this is the best text out there for the beginner.

This book is a great text for a very difficult subject. It contains wonderful examples that are never boring and is a great starting foundation for beginning econometricians. It is very well written and teaches the subject with clarity.

This book presents a collection of "classic" (published) articles on the RBC literature. Nevertheless, the first two chapters (written by the editors) present a simplistic and incomplete account of the methodological improvements in Macro that are due to RBC.

One of a kind.......2005-12-31

Not only is it good for adding creativity and fun to a class, it is an excellent resource book for those such as myself who are looking for ways to incorporate music and lyrics into language teaching. I think there definitely is a strong connection between music/songs and language learning which I do not see capitalized on too often in classrooms. Murphey makes this point in his work, which still stands today, well over a decade after he first published this book.

Excellent and Non-traditional.......2004-05-23

Tim Murphey offers a ton of non-traditional and creative ways for using music in the ESL classroom in this book. He divides the book into types of activity and indicates language level for each activity. Many of the ideas in this book could be used in the foreign language classroom, as well. I think this book should be in the personal library of any language teacher who wants to add some creativity and fun into his/her language class.

This isn't a book for self-students........2005-08-05

It needs a professor obligatorily. There is a multitude of cases to study, but it only indicates what it is necessary to study in them. The book proposes many questions, but explains few new ideas. It seems an accompaniment book for others where there is the information to respond the questions. And the proposed exercises, because at the end of the book there isn't an appendix with the answers, the self-student cannot check if his work goes in the correct way or not. In summary: it is a book for the assistants to the professor Owen oral classes.

A practical and comprehensive approach to teaching theory.......2000-11-04

"Music Theory Resource Book" by Harold Owen is a fantastic, creative approach to teaching music theory that emphasizes the development of musical skills that students can apply in a practical manner in any setting they choose, whether it be in the music industry or in graduate school. The book not only covers issues such as renaissance and medieval theory and notation in-depth, but also provides knowledge about MIDI note numbers and how to read piano-roll style notation in a sequencer. While this book would be a great book for a first-time student of music theory in a college or university, it is also good for people wishing to review (such as graduate theory review, a course I've taught). In addition, it's a fantastic review for those who teach theory and composition -- the chapter on notation (Chapter 2 - The Notation of Music) is something every composer should have at their disposal -- especially beginning composition students in a college setting. Especially useful for composition students (and all music students for that matter) are the two chapters on the music of the twentieth century -- the first on techniques developed in the first half of the century and the second on techniques developed in the second half of the century. Every chapter has something for everyone -- the chapter on "The Anatomy of Chords" not only describes the type of chord nomenclature found in the typical college theory classroom (Roman numerals and figured bass), but also includes a thorough section on chord symbols used in jazz and popular music -- something all musicians are bound to encounter in the real world. As someone who teaches music theory in a university setting, I've found this book to be a valuable resource. Too often, theory books use short excerpts to demonstrate a chord or principle. However, every chapter in this book begins with complete sections (and often entire movements) of musical works from the literature -- this helps to put the chord or principle being studied into context, something I find very important. I highly recommend this book.

Worst DTS book yet!.......2006-06-14

This book is a waste of time and money. I had hoped for a dedicated, informative book on DTS methods and strategies, but got a book written from the Microsoft pre-release notes. Fortunately, I bought it used and just tossed it in the trash.

You will find better examples and information from SQL Server BOM. Consider SQL Server 2000 Unleashed. It has more examples and up to date information at least.

**** Not for the Beginner ****.......2004-01-14

This book was recommendation to me by a company that trains. I have read 100 pages, and I still don't know what to do. I have experience with Analysis Manager, MDX and Business Intelligence viewers, but this book lacks process. I think that it may be OK for an advanced person. I am buying another book.

Complete and Useful reference for DTS........2003-03-15

SQL Server 2000 DTS by Peterson.

As much as DTS is used in the thousands of SQL Server (7 & 2000) implementations out there, for tasks as simple as copying or moving tables from one database to another, there is VERY little documentation on the product... that is, documentation that explores and explains the details and myriad of options available for use within the tool. I am a strong believer that because of this lack of documentation this wonderful tool is underutilized and regarded as a mystery to many.

Here comes Mr. Peterson and gives us this great resource to help us better understand the intricacies of the tool, in a very logical and organized manner with the respect and level of content that a professional (such as is the target audience for this book) needs and appreciates.

Chapters are specific, to the point and generally develop some sort of simple scenario that puts the theory into practice. The author constantly points out the areas where the 2000 version of the tool is enhanced over the previous version shipped with SQL Server 7. I also like the plethora of code samples and the side-by-side solution alternative presented with each code snippet vs. its UI counterpart implementation.

The first two chapters alone are enough to get you started and excited about using the tool and it could stand on it own as a great article!, whereas the rest of the book presents a more detailed view of all the additional features as well as a very complete tutorial on coding DTS solutions.

The book is a great sole reference and guide for DTS, partially because of the lack of "competition" but mostly because its content is valuable, complete and easy to follow. This text has been with me for almost 2 years and to this day it still helps me out when I'm in need.

Granted it lacks some creativity when it comes to the content of such examples and resorts to using the over referenced Northwind and Pubs databases... I see a trend nowadays with several publications coming up with their own theoretical applications for equally fictional businesses but that add so much to the value of a book aimed at helping the real world professional and broadens horizons of creativity and knowledge. For this I give the text one star less than perfect and hope that newer editions incorporate more lively examples and spark some much needed creativity.

Need real world examples.......2003-02-28

Probably a good reference if you happen to already know how to program in DTS. Otherwise I found it difficult to find many good examples of doing some real world stuff that I would consider a notch above basic.

Great overview- great reference.......2001-06-28

I liked the book. It has helped me in any DTS task I undertake. The book gives you everything you need to perform DTS manipulation. Like every book, it cannot provide you with "everything". Therefore, for starters, try this book to give you the knowledge that you need to be a DTS power user. Then supply it with deja.com groups, MDSN and Books Online if needed. There is no need to buy any other book.
