      Book Description

What determines whether children grow up to be rich or poor? Arguing that parental actions are some of the most important sources of wealth inequality, Casey B. Mulligan investigates the transmission of economic status from one generation to the next by constructing an economic model of parental preferences.

In Mulligan's model, parents determine the degree of their altruistic concern for their children and spend time with and resources on them accordingly—just as they might make choices about how they spend money. Mulligan tests his model against both old and new evidence on the intergenerational transmission of consumption, earnings, and wealth, including models that emphasize "financial constraints." One major prediction of Mulligan's model confirmed by the evidence is that children of wealthy parents typically spend more than they earn.

Mulligan's innovative approach can also help explain other important behavior, such as charitable giving and "corporate loyalty," and will appeal to a wide range of quantitatively oriented social scientists and sociobiologists.

      5 out of 5 stars Interesting subject,original approach,accessible exposition.......2000-04-15

I recommend this book mainly for three reasons. I found the subject really exciting : is economic status of the children dependent on the choices of their parents, and if yes, how ? The approach chosen by Mulligan is very original, because, while using the full strength of the economic reasoning, he decided to endogenize parental altruism, instead of taking it as given. Finally, one very good point for non economists is that his argumentation is altogether clear, convincing and accessible. This is a very uncommon quality in the economic litterature.

From the supplier: Casey Mulligan's 'Parental Priorities and Economic Equality' thoroughly analyzes the intergenerational transmission of inequality. The author presents three models to explain the phenomenon, including a two-period consumption-savings model, permanent income model and the imperfect capital markets model. He introduces the core idea of endogenous altruism, wherein altruism is promoted by rising income. He also offers the idea that inequality starts in the family, where parents may not share increases in income with their children.

We run one of the most popular daily adult joke websites on the net, and as such we often feel like we've run across every tired old wheezer of a joke that's ever been written.

This book proved us completely wrong; this is a TON of the best and funniest jokes now circulating, and none of the garbage. We only wish we'd thought of this first!

5 out of 5 stars From the dirty jokes master.......2000-12-15

I have collected all the dirty joke books from their debut in the middle 80's. The ones that have been coming out in the last 6 years or so, have been a rehash of the old ones. This one is DYNAMITE! It's gross and excellent. The jokes are new and extremely good. Any of the older jokes (Which represents the ones frome the older joke books are the best ones of the bunch.) I hope they come out with edition II.

5 out of 5 stars The Skin brothers will make you laugh.........2000-01-14

I was fortunate enough to purchase this book while dining in Japan's finest mexican food restaurant. The owner says he is good friends with Mr. Goatskin and Mr. Foreskin.

If you hate getting constant Forwards from friends with jokes that you have to muddle through the 50 times it was forwarded before it got to you, due to the fact that most internet and computer users are oblivious to this thing call cut and paste, look no further. Our research team tells us that this book has every joke forwarded from person to person all over the world in it.

So when you get that email from a friend where the subject line reads; "FW: Ha-ha" or "FW: Thought this was funny" or "FW: LOL", delete it and buy this book and you will have all those jokes.

These jokes are funny. There are one-liners, stories, battle of the sexes jokes. It is just like the title says. This book is way better than Drew Carey's.

5 out of 5 stars Disgusting and Hilarious.......1999-12-10

Never have I seen such a collection. It's not the one or two funnies here and there type of book. Every joke, every page, this one will either make you laugh or make you sick.

            5 out of 5 stars DISCUSTINGLY FUNNY!.......1999-12-09

So funny, I made my husband highlight his favorites and then compared them with mine. Very funny! Great to review before going to parties.

5 out of 5 stars A True Joy for Dan Fans.......2007-03-28

Reading this book was a true joy! I read it while I was on a beach vacation, listening to the music on my ipod as I was reading about it. It was about as close to being there with them as I could get. It was also great learning more about the reclusive duo and how they, like the true artists they are, were always so much more about the music than about the rock & roll lifestyle. I was also able to get a better sense of their personalities and how they were able to translate their amazing story-telling skills into music.

I AM SO GLAD that Brian Sweet wrote this book, authorized or not. Being able to read an entire book devoted to my favorite musicians was, as I said before, a TRUE JOY!

5 out of 5 stars Must Have For Dan Fans.......2007-01-08

I have been a huge Dan Fan since the early 70's; my adoration for these guys has always remained strong, so this is a great unauthorized book about what goes on behind the scenes,, and what these two great talents are really like. A must have for true diehard Dan Fans!!!!

Do you want to know everything there is to know about Steely Dan short of kidnapping Becker and Fagen, putting a gun to their heads and forcing them to talk? Then get this book. As you might expect, Becker and Fagen (B&F) refused to talk to the author, Brian Sweet. To put together this history of Steely Dan, he ransacked every published interview and magazine article, and interviewed many of the musicians and recording personnel that worked with B&F. He then wrote everything out in chronological order in a prose style that is barely above "workmanlike." This book seems to describe everything that is known about B&F. He has little insight into the jealously guarded minds of B&F and he does not speculate. The bottom line is that we are all forced by the consistent and long-term strategies of B&F to confront the carefully crafted music they have recorded without insight into the motivations and personal lives that brought that music into existence. This focus on the art and not the artists must be seen as a positive by Steely Dan fans or else the frustrations become overwhelming. And for me, the tremendous music they recorded is enough, but I admit, I really enjoyed learning the history that Brian Sweet had to tell. Perhaps someday we will get an in-depth, authorized biography of B&F. Until then, this book will have to do.

3 out of 5 stars Where DID you get those shoes?.......2002-04-25

This book is compelling reading for the serious Steely Dan fan. However, one must take it with a grain of salt, as the dynamic duo weren't involved in the book project at all. The mystique of Becker and Fagen represent part of their attraction, after all, and their legendary reclusiveness permeates this book. This reader noted a few glaring errors in grammar, and perhaps typos, but considering it's British authoring, it may be correct as far as the King's English goes. A good read nonetheless...I am glad I read it, however, as it seems to answer some of the nagging questions all Dan fans ask. Buy it with confidenc, but don't expect too much.

3 out of 5 stars Fans will like it...critics will hate it........2002-04-25

This book is informative, with some great photos and stories, but it has to be taken in the spirit in which it was written. The author admits not interviewing the principals during the course of writing this book, and has to rely on a lot of second hand information. For this reason, one can not take everything too seriously. There were a few grammatical errors in the text as well, but considering the author was based in the U.K., I don't really know what may be correct in their determination. I found it an informative and entertaining book, but it would have been better to hear from Donald and Walter in the first person.

              Book Description

Lies, intrigue, illicit affairs, kidnapping, snitches, and drug abuse. Sound like the stuff of a daytime TV soap opera? No, just a typical day at one of the radio stations where Jack James has worked. This major market program director's matter-of-fact, often cynical and mostly hilarious deadpan diary entries give readers a glimpse of what really goes on behind the scenes of an everyday radio station. There's the promotions director who uses her station's Web page to conduct an anonymous hate campaign against the new morning guy. The night DJ who can't pull his shift because some of his teeth have been knocked out in a drug deal. The popular host who confesses he's only been sober one day during the last year. The board operator who decides to hijack the airwaves and do his own talk show. And the woman with Tourette's Syndrome, who disrupts a remote broadcast from a bank. As the author notes, "Could I make this stuff up?" The PD Chronicles is must reading for anyone who has ever listened to the radio, works in radio, or is thinking about getting into radio.

If you have ever worked in radio, listened to radio, or even if you have never even seen a radio, this is a must-read. Shocking and funny, this book will change your view on those in the radio industry. No longer will you say, "Wow, getting paid to sit on your butt and listen to music, and only have to work for 4 or 5 hours a day!" If you only knew . . . You will not be able to put this book down as you enter the world of radio daycare. Jack James expresses so well what it's like to be a babysitter to those that entertain us daily on the airwaves.

              5 out of 5 stars Perfect........2004-08-07

This book is absolutely perfect for anyone who is either thinking about going into radio or who is already in radio. James' stories are hilarious and interesting. I read the whole book in one night because I couldn't put it down. A must read.

A copy of this excellent book arrived at our offices here in Europe for review recently.

I have been in commercial, major-market radio since 1980. This book should be required reading in all broadcast schools, and for anyone who wants to get into "the business." Every single thing in this book is true, I have no doubt. (Cause I have seen it all first-hand!) A really, really accurate snapshot of what radio is REALLY like.

5 out of 5 stars I've been there, done that !.......2001-12-14

The only surprise about the things revealed in this book is that someone finally has the guts to publish them. I spent a career in radio and "insiders" and fans alike will find both hilarity and sadness at this look "behind the scenes" of big time radio broadcasting in YOUR home town. The DJ's, the Talk Show Hosts, the Sales [people] and the PD Gurus are all there. Plus Mr. Manager, the evil demon who walks in the door in the morning, walks to the back of the station and fires everyone he sees, then returns to his desk. If you are interested in radio, if you want a career in radio, if you LISTEN to radio, this is a "must read." "Jack James" will be fired soon...somebody is bound to find out who he really is. Stay tuned...don't touch that dial.

              5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to a great series!.......2007-08-10

For avid Andromeda fans, this book provides a trip down memory lane. If you're not familiar with the show, this is a great introduction to it. I only wish Mr.Wigmore had written a follow up book on seasons 3-5. In any case,I love this book and the photos are stunning!

              3 out of 5 stars Incorrect Pricing.......2005-07-20

This book does not cost $69.00. It's been this way for years. I bought the book a couple of years ago and it was less than $25.00. I'm surprised someone hasn't said something to Amazon by now. I remember that I mentioned the incorrect price when I bought the book at Borders. Evidently, they didn't bother to pass the information on to Amazon. I hadn't realized the price was still incorrect until someone mentioned it on a list I'm on. Yeesh!

The book is okay. It's the same as what used to be on the official Andromeda site. So all episodes are given a blurb and there are some other nice details and pictures.

              2 out of 5 stars Almost a good idea.......2004-06-09

I was looking forwards to this book as Andromeda has a lot of background that's only touched on various aliens, equiptment, races and events that turn up fleetingly in episodes that could be fully explored in this book they're not.

As you'd expect most of the book is an episode guide but the episode reviews are profusely illustrated which is nice (visually the book is very attractive) the actual reviews are not up to the quality of the official andromedatv website however in terms of background information and insight.

So what about the supplimental information character reviews finally someone found some good pictures of the cast (though that's no excuse for using the same full page shot of Beka twice within 10 pages).

A lot of the illustrations are taken from the bonus material at the back of the DVDs especially for the set and equiptment designs.

Rounding out the book are a set of cast and crew interviews which are again short but well illustrated.

In the end you are left with a package that is nice to look at but shows an inadequate attention to detail including repeated photos, missing and mislabled photos and a few that seem to be of nothing very much. The text content is servicable but little more than that definate room for improvement. Eye Candy

Aimed at any serious programmer or computer science student, the new second edition of Introduction to Algorithms builds on the tradition of the original with a truly magisterial guide to the world of algorithms. Clearly presented, mathematically rigorous, and yet approachable even for the math-averse, this title sets a high standard for a textbook and reference to the best algorithms for solving a wide range of computing problems.

With sample problems and mathematical proofs demonstrating the correctness of each algorithm, this book is ideal as a textbook for classroom study, but its reach doesn't end there. The authors do a fine job of explaining each algorithm. (Reference sections on basic mathematical notation will help readers bridge the gap, but it will help to have some math background to appreciate the full achievement of this handsome hardcover volume.) Every algorithm is presented in pseudo-code, which can be implemented in any computer language, including C/C++ and Java. This ecumenical approach is one of the book's strengths. When it comes to sorting and common data structures, from basic linked lists to trees (including binary trees, red-black, and B-trees), this title really shines, with clear diagrams that show algorithms in operation. Even if you just glance over the mathematical notation here, you can definitely benefit from this text in other ways.

The book moves forward with more advanced algorithms that implement strategies for solving more complicated problems (including dynamic programming techniques, greedy algorithms, and amortized analysis). Algorithms for graphing problems (used in such real-world business problems as optimizing flight schedules or flow through pipelines) come next. In each case, the authors provide the best from current research in each topic, along with sample solutions.

This text closes with a grab bag of useful algorithms including matrix operations and linear programming, evaluating polynomials, and the well-known Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) (useful in signal processing and engineering). Final sections on "NP-complete" problems, like the well-known traveling salesman problem, show off that while not all problems have a demonstrably final and best answer, algorithms that generate acceptable approximate solutions can still be used to generate useful, real-world answers.

Throughout this text, the authors anchor their discussion of algorithms with current examples drawn from molecular biology (like the Human Genome Project), business, and engineering. Each section ends with short discussions of related historical material, often discussing original research in each area of algorithms. On the whole, they argue successfully that algorithms are a "technology" just like hardware and software that can be used to write better software that does more, with better performance. Along with classic books on algorithms (like Donald Knuth's three-volume set, The Art of Computer Programming), this title sets a new standard for compiling the best research in algorithms. For any experienced developer, regardless of their chosen language, this text deserves a close look for extending the range and performance of real-world software. --Richard Dragan

              Book Description

The updated new edition of the classic Introduction to Algorithms is intended primarily for use in undergraduate or graduate courses in algorithms or data structures. Like the first edition, this text can also be used for self-study by technical professionals since it discusses engineering issues in algorithm design as well as the mathematical aspects.

In its new edition, Introduction to Algorithms continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to the modern study of algorithms. The revision has been updated to reflect changes in the years since the book's original publication. New chapters on the role of algorithms in computing and on probabilistic analysis and randomized algorithms have been included. Sections throughout the book have been rewritten for increased clarity, and material has been added wherever a fuller explanation has seemed useful or new information warrants expanded coverage.

As in the classic first edition, this new edition of Introduction to Algorithms presents a rich variety of algorithms and covers them in considerable depth while making their design and analysis accessible to all levels of readers. Further, the algorithms are presented in pseudocode to make the book easily accessible to students from all programming language backgrounds.

Each chapter presents an algorithm, a design technique, an application area, or a related topic. The chapters are not dependent on one another, so the instructor can organize his or her use of the book in the way that best suits the course's needs. Additionally, the new edition offers a 25% increase over the first edition in the number of problems, giving the book 155 problems and over 900 exercises that reinforce the concepts the students are learning.

2 out of 5 stars Confusing to say the least.......2007-09-14

This book does not provide enough examples to really get the ideas across. It is a thick read that provides little help to the subject matter unless the reader already has a wealth of knowledge on mathematical proofs and algorithms to begin with.

If the book had a solution manual, or at least explained many of the things that occur in the problem sections that never show up in the actual reading, then it would be a much easier to understand textbook.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic algorithms book.......2007-06-03

This is one of the few books that I've kept from my undergrad days as a computer science major. Although I haven't been doing software development in a while, I still use it for reference once in a while. It's easy to understand and timeless reference book. I work for a large DoD company and quite a few of my co-workers have this book on their shelves as well. (We all went to different colleges.)

5 out of 5 stars Good Reference, Poor Textbook.......2007-04-19

This is a good reference for researchers, but it is not suitable for beginners. For anyone who try to study algorithms in the beginning, he just needs the big picture of this course, but this book contains too many mathematical proofs. In other words, the beginners just want a cup of milk, but the authors of this book give them a whole cow.

Although this book is quite huge, it does not contain some important topics, like online algorithms, randomized algorithms ... etc. In fact, this book should try to 'lose its weight' in order to get more useful knowledge.

The book contains a lot of interesting exercises, but does not indicate any hints or solutions. In fact, some of those exercises are too hard for students, and the authors should try to announce all sloutions in the website.

              + Defacto standard
              + Accompanying WebCourse

              - Too deep if used as an intro book; lacks solutions if used for a reference book
              - It's HUGE!; hard to carry around

= Tries to appease too wide an audience. Definately attractive to professors who already know the information and feel this is THE book yet probably too deep for an intro algorithms class. Wish there was a searchable pdf version that came with the book on a CD as well as odd numbered solutions.

2 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes........2006-02-20

I agree with the other reviewers who have said that this book is sloppy. There are just far too many mistakes for a 2nd edition book; very discouraging in an Addison-Wesley print.

The content is OK, and fairly thorough, but as another reviewer noted, there's considerable handwaving going on in some of the explanations.

Bottom line: a cleaned-up 3rd edition could be a very good textbook. Too bad I'm stuck with the 2nd edition :(

1 out of 5 stars Worst text book ever written.........2005-12-02

This book is extremely poorly written. The authors glaze over complex equations and magically come up with answers that don't make any sense. For example, to anyone having taken a prior architecture course the author's are completely wrong in the majority of cache performance analysis done early on in the book. Problems associated with that topic force the reader to dumb-down quite a bit to achieve their "expected" answer.

The user is left in most cases to derive the bizarre math that is involved through the authors' hand-waiving.
One of my personal favorites is from a formula derivation given on page 340, the sequence follows from the text as:

              n^2=Ktwnp,
              n=Ktwp,
              n^2=K^2tw^2p^2, <--what, did I miss something here?
              W=K^2tw^2p^2,

On top of that there are numerous typos in the sparse visual examples that do exist. Thus it makes it even more confounding to read through.

If you are evaluating the text for a possible parallel computing course. Don't waste your time or money with this text, your students will thank you. If you are student looking to take a class that uses this text...dropping a brick on your foot might be more enjoyable. If you think I'm a disgruntled student trying to seek revenge, I'm not. I did fine in the course, and I just want to make sure that no one else gets blind-sided by the non-sensical garbage that is this text. If there was a negative rating...this would be below 1 star.

2 out of 5 stars Better read Journals than this book.......2005-11-29

I bought the book a few months ago as textbook for my semester class in high performance computing. After reading the first 3 chapters I realized that this book is a waste. The examples are only solved partially, a lot of jargons (they should have put the terminology in separate table, maybe).

I was hoping, by reading the book I'd learn something essential and got the basic philosophy of high-performance computing/parallel processing. Instead, I got more confused than before reading it! (I used to be real-time software programmer, so the field is not totally new to me). The authors tried to put everything in this small 633-pages book.

Even my professor said it is useless to read the book and refer us to other papers [Robertazzi's papers], and yes, these IEEE/ACM papers are much clearly explained and understood! I also found that a website is much better explaining the concept. Another book is also I guess better: "Fundamentals of Parallel Processing" by Harry F. Jordan and Gita Alaghband.

Don't waste your money on this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but..........2004-04-08

Yes, this is definitely a good book. The discussions on some of the topics are in depth. Parallel algorithm designs are considered from several different angles (mostly from theoretical performance's point of view). One definitely has to get some backgrounds in algorithms before one can digest the contents of this book, thus I recommend this book only for juniors, seniors, graduate students. From the theoretical point of view this book is great, but from the "experimental" point of view is not. It lacks examples and exercises on doing the theory in the actual parallel computers. Thus you have to develop your own MPI (or openMP) understanding and apply it to the topics discussed in this book.

              2 out of 5 stars A sloppily written book.......2004-01-18

The content should be accessible to any graduate student but the sloppy writing style has made it unnecessarily difficult to read. Out of the many poorly written places, here is an example. In section 6.3.5 on page 248, it wrote, "Recall from section 9.3.1..." But I am only in chapter 6, how can I recall something from chapter 9. I then checked chapter 9 and found out that the forward reference was not a typo.

"Foundations of Multithreaded, Parallel, and Distributed Programming" by Gregory Andrews is a much better written book. Unfortunately, Gregory's book does not cover the same content.
