Great Exposition, but Poor Notation.......2007-09-27
Great introduction to the subject, but the notation is poor. By presenting the material without matrix algebra, the multiple regression analysis becomes a convoluted mess of summation notation. Additionally, matrix notation is adopted in more advanced texts, making in beneficial to learn from the start.
A very good book.......2007-02-26
Wooldridge's explanations are clear and useful. After a semester hacking my way through the dense brush of matrices in Greene's book, I realized I needed some help. Now I go to Wooldridge's treatment first, to make sure I understand the main concepts. Then I go to Greene for the detail, if I need to.
Great for Self-studying.......2006-12-04
This books is excellent read. It builds good intuition, and is well suited for self-studying. It is also not too mathematical, no matrix notation, good for undergraduate students or as a review for graduate students. I can truly recommmend it.
Excellent for cross-sectional but needs complements for time series.......2006-12-01
As the author says, the book is "aimed at undergraduates but it is adaptable to master's students". It will provide you with excellent and extensive real life explanations. What is better about this book is that you can redo every example in the book by using the online data that it provides with. This was it is easier what happens by experimenting. In that sense this book is superior to many others where you cannot see how the results of estimations came about.
There is only one thing to take into account. Although there are three parts to this book, the shortest one is time series. Its coverage will is therefore not very comprehensive if you want basic explanations like the VAR, GARCH models etc...
In that case, I would recommend the book New Directions in Econometric Practice by Wojciech W. Charemza.
Wooldridge is best.......2005-10-03
Wooldridge is best (review refers to 2nd edition).
You don't need any other book to start intermediate econometrics or indeed econometrics at all once you know a little first-year statistics; the Amazon reviewers who prefer Gujarati or others are living in the dead past: W is better and easier and leaves very little out that G covers.
Ignore the tempting "dumbing down" implications of the publishers' advertising material whether filtered by Amazon or not; they don't need to sell the book because it's used all over the world in the best places and just walks out of the store. He dumbs down not at all or else, occasionally, very successfully.
The only possible alternative at this level (in fact well below) is Stock and Watson but they don't make you do exercises on data, which I assure you is essential fun.
Of course if you don't like exercises you can also read Peter Kennedy's Guide and philosophise. I imagine that the next step up is Greene's semi-encyclopedia or Davidson and MacKinnon's newer or older books, unless you choose to jump into the literature as W helps you to do.
All of these books just introduce Time Series too slowly and too late: try Terence Mills' several books on various aspects: he has the rare talent of simplicity AND brevity. Perhaps W's next book will be on Time Series (on which he has published).
By the way, it is easy and great fun to find inappropriate analyses in almost any econometrics book if you use a good package: David Hendry's PcGive suite etc is especially quick for this purpose: a few clicks and the graphs show the nonsense. I sometimes think that the popularity of EViews with students is precisely because inappropriate analyses are easily hidden. More expert people than me use Stata, but I don't know ....
I loved Streakieblondie's review, but I must tell her and you all that the Schaum book (I spare the author's blushes) is a stinker, useful only for getting through bad exams set by lazy lecturers, though many Schaum books in well-established areas are excellent. Both W and S&W are high-class professionals who happen to know how to write text-books, and they have all three collaborated with Nobel Prizewinners: so go for quality. Why don't the publishers' reviews and materials say this rather than implying that they've made good new stuff trivially easy? In my view W has judged it better than S&W.
If you're VERY keen, Wooldridge's other book on panel data is just terrific (but some matrices Streakieblondie, though with lots of clever help).
Book Description
Offers an ideal combination of econometric theory and hands-on practical training for undergraduate and graduate courses. The author's ambition is to provide realistic applications without sacrificing theoretical underpinnings. He uses a logical step-by-step approach to walk readers through numerous real-world examples of model specification, estimation, and hypothesis testing. The book also succeeds at being self-contained. By including background information on mathematics, probability, statistics, and software applications, readers have all the information they need in one place.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-01-11
I used this book for the Applied Econometrics course I had to take at the university and it was very useful and relatively easy to understand, especially when compared to others.
great book-really helpful for students who learn econometrics for B.A in economics.......2007-01-08
econometrics is an empirical theory about estimating ECONOMICS models and fit those models who are based on economic theory to reality, using statistical methods and sample deviations.this book gives a full chapter for a review about all u need to know in statistics in order to use it in the proofs of econometrics formulas that used in later chapters in the book:such as mean, variance, covariance, distributions and other statistical stuff. those who wrote in previous reviews that they dont understand econometrics and that the book is UNORGANIZED-i warn u that econometrics is a THEORY that explains ECONOMICS THEORY-u need to know some basic things about economic theorys such as the famous MACRO-ECONOMIC CONSUMPTION-INCOME model and its economic theory-and also u need to know basic math that economics student must know and lean in first year-THIS IS WHY THIS BOOK MOSTLY GOOD FOR ECONOMICS STUDENTS who have some knowledge about economics models and math that used in economics:the simple linear equation, difrentials etc.THE BAD THING IS THAT THIS BOOK REALLY EXPENSIVE IN AMAZON,COST 131$ WHICH IS TOO EXPENSIVE IN TERMS OF SHEKELS(ISRAELI MONEY) 550 SHEKELS!SINCE THAT I HAVE TO LOAN AN OLDER VERSION OF THIS BOOK,4TH EDITION, IN THE COLLEGE LIBRARY-i would buy this book in amazon if amazon would decrease the price to a reasonable price for a book around 20-25$
unorganized.......2003-02-21
Though this book offers many questions, which is an advantage, it does not clear concise answers to the few questions which it does answer. Furthermore this text has a very poor structure to it, material is all over the place. The only other benefit is the user friendly gretl software.
Outstanding introduction to econometrics.......2002-09-07
I can not express enough the quality of this book for the desired target audience. As the title suggests, this is a book for those looking to gain insight into the basics of econometrics. If you've taken even a little calculus, and basic statistics, you should be ok. If not, you've no business trying to tackle econometrics, so I will not let that requirement taint my 5 star rating.
If you have a desire to learn anything about econometrics, especially if you've seen some basic information about regression / OLS in a stats class before, this is the place to start. What is learned here is not only the underlying math but also the all important intuition behind the math and the stats and ultimately the econometrics itself. You don't just learn why a formula works, how it is written, and what the proof looks like. The author goes to length to ensure that you also gain a broad appreciation for the assumptions upon which the methods are based, and ultimately what happens when you violate those assumptions. This is a critical part of learning statistics and econometrics, one which is far too often neglected by students, instructors, and authors alike. A key part of any statistical exercise is the intuition behind it, and a working knowledge of how and why the methods chosen are valid. Ramanathan does an excellent job of making sure you understand these ideas every step of the way, throughtout the text. There are plentiful references to earlier sections with related concepts, constantly linking new ideas with those covered in previous sections and chapters. Appendices between chapters also delve into the related mathematics and provide additional proofs for those interested.
I believe there is no better introduction to the subject of econometrics than this work. My instructor required this text in our beginning econometrics course. He never taught directly from the book nor did he assign work from it. We were merely told to purchase it as a requirement for the class so that we would have it as a reference whether we thought we needed it or not. I found myself reading this book constantly, despite never having been required to so much as open it for the class. The book is more than worth it, even at twice the price.
Wonderful deal!.......2002-03-30
The book is really new, in good condition. The delivery is faster than expected! If I buy a book next time, I will choose this dealer again!
Book Description
Congress, the President, and the Federal Reserve is a study of the politics of monetary policy making at the Federal Reserve--widely considered the most important and most powerful federal bureaucracy. Ostensibly, the Federal Reserve is independent of the political branches of government; however, Congress, the President, and the Federal Reserve clearly demonstrates-- from both a theoretical and empirical standpoint--how the preferences of members of Congress and the President impact decisionmaking at the Fed.
Current formal theories of the general policy-making process are utilized to construct an explanatory framework that identifies the mechanisms through which congressional and executive influence is exercised. The theoretical framework presented in the text also helps to explain the political dynamics of several of the most significant policy decisions of the Federal Reserve during the last half-century. In addition, this book provides a unique perspective on the manner in which Fed policymakers attempt to shield themselves from unwelcome political influence.
While the main focus of Congress, the President, and the Federal Reserve is monetary policy-making, it also speaks to the political nature of policy-making in a more general sense and provides a guide for the future study of the political dynamics in a wide variety of substantive policy areas. Thus it will interest not only political scientists and economists interested in monetary policy-making specifically but also those interested in the nature of public policy-making more generally.

Book Description
Non-technical advice to aspiring singers from 2 of the greatest singers. Focuses on the care and training of the voice, tone emission and attack, voice faults, more.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating.......2001-03-24
I liked hearing from Tetrazzini herself how she achieved such a wonderful sound, what her "secrets" were. This book was a very nice change from the usual technical material. I thought the personal information and insights were interesting. I'm even re-reading it now with my highlighter, just to make sure I get every thing I can out of it.
A worthwhile read for vocal students.......1999-02-06
This book contains some excellent points and vocal tips given by two great singers of their time. One must however disregard much of the negativity and arrogance with which the book was written - there is no "foolproof" method for singing and each person must unlock their individual potential. It is true, however, that essentially, one must sing naturally and comfortably, as this book emphasizes.
Book Description
Fucito, who was Caruso's vocal coach and accompanist from 1916 to 1921, chronicles the tenor's legendary musical career, portrays him as a man, and analyzes and describes his phenomenal breathing technique, tone production, practice sessions, style and repertory. Features 46 fully notated vocal exercises, and photos of Caruso in famous roles.
Customer Reviews:
About the book.......2005-08-18
It is one of the best collection I have ever owned. Provides an indepth explanation about Caruso's vocal tenchnique and how he practices them. Exercise scales are even provided to guide you to the singer you wished to be. I have started the scales for practice and believe me when I say this - it's not easy - especially for starters. Overall, the book's great. The content is great - and no doubt about it, it was written by one of the many great authors/singers around.
good to know.......2001-01-21
I thought the book is great - for everybody who wonders how to learn how Caruso succeeded in getting is throat so relaxed and his voice so perfectly soft - here is the book to at least catch a glimpse. Don't expect to "learn" singing from this book - but be happy to at least get an idea why most of the singers today sing so much worse than the singers in Carusos age (not to say Caruso himself). Fucito has actually helped Caruso studying - so he knows what Caruso actually did - forget the book from Marafioti...
Not quite a guide.......2000-06-22
I bought this book and I expected to learn singing from Caruso, but I was surprised to find out that more than half the book is actually a biography about his life. The book's aim isn't to teach singing, but to tell about Caruso's life, his career, and finally about how he practiced singing. No solid advice or technique is offered.

Book Description
As they race to and from emergency calls, as they wait and watch, and as they administer aid to the traumatized, paramedics tell stories. Their tales disclose much about how they view their own profession. Their duties are much more complex than the dramatic portrayals that reach the living room via the television screen. This book reports what really goes on behind the scenes. The reader of Talking Trauma has a virtual front seat in the ambulance.
Here the focus is not on the mechanics of the job but rather on paramedics' work culture and their well-established storytelling tradition. The stories they tell are cynical, flip, and profane--the very antithesis of "heroic" in the romantic sense. Their narratives evince an "anti-epic" quality that intentionally trivializes the conventional immensities of pain and horror. Paramedics present the gothic as "business as usual," and mainly their stories are intended only for the ears of other paramedics.
Their stories afford a shocking glimpse into a chaotic urban underworld where prostitution, drug abuse, assault, and murder are daily fare. Outsiders may expect their tales to be only about horrific mutilation and death. However compelling such topics may be to the layperson, the actual repertory is most often commentary on personal experience and revelation of the "why" behind the stories paramedics tell.
Talking Trauma provides an intimate look into a work culture deliberately kept hidden from public view. It is not centered on individuals the public may stereotype as streetwise, hardened caregivers but upon the stories of self-presentation by which paramedics structure past events to fit into their identity. This fascinating book reveals how storytelling equips these professionals to exert control over chaos and to withstand encounters with suffering, death, and mayhem on a daily basis.
Customer Reviews:
Tangherlini lets urban medics talk.......2003-02-14
These are the real voices of real people doing a nasty job for a [crummy]...py company under rotten conditions. The tales are unvarnished, many are "war stories," some are personal reflections. Each thematic section comprises unedited stories of medics, followed by Tangherlini's analysis from his perspective as an Occupational Folklorist. The validity of this perspective may be arguable, but I find it very accurate and insightful. Tangherlini's greatest contribution is letting my friends and coworkers tell their stories.
As with the movie Bringing out the Dead, most EMS personnel either love or hate this book. If you are interested in urban EMS, either as an outsider or reflective insider, it is an excellent book. Should you find it degrading or negative, I think you're missing the point. These are the voices of people working well past the edges of what most EMS professionals consider normal. If you want "Johnny and Roy save the day" try Angels of Emergency.
Better than what I expected.......2001-11-07
I thought this would be stories from the heroes we see on news and TV. It isn't. But the stories are really great anyway. Funny, weird--maybe a bit dark, but so was Bringing out the Dead. I guess the book isn't what you'd expect--the paramedics aren't glamorized at all. I guess this guy sometimes sounds like a professor, but that's what he is. None of my professors in college ever came close to writing something this interesting. Personally, I think the book is really readable and enjoyable, at least if you're halfway educated--I read it on a plane and couldn't stop laughing (I think people thought I was nuts since plane trips these days aren't places where too many people laugh). I guess you either really love this book or really hate it. It definitely makes you think. I for one won't look at an ambulance the same way again.
Not worth the money!.......2001-11-05
He goes round and round trying to use big words. Not only does he not understand what Paramedics are doing from day to day on the streets, he trys to analyze it on a psychological level. Not real readable. Best not to pay such a high price for a man who is still trying to write college term papers for a living.
Best 18 bucks I've spent in a long time.......2000-10-16
This book is a great look at the profession. There's nothing psychoanalytical here regardless of what another reviewer says. Instead you get great stories and clear, concise analyses. The questions the author tries to answer are difficult ones, and there's no one single interpretation that fits all. Instead of buying the media hype, Tangerlini gives a critical understanding of a demanding profession without talking down to the reader. Like the blurb says, you get to "ride along" in an ambulance. If only the books I read in college were this understandable and engaging!
Hits the Nail on the Head.......2000-08-25
I've been a medic for more years than I like to count now, both in rural services and more recently in a big urban setting. This is probably the most genuine, interesting, and sophisticated portrayal of my field that I've read to date. The stories ring true. In fact, one of the guys at the station swears that one of the stories is HIS call. Anyway, I'd recommend this book to anyone who knows a medic, is a medic, or wants to know what goes on beyond the rescue geek stuff you read or see on TV.

Customer Reviews:
It's better than nothing. But just barely........2006-05-14
While this text covers a great deal of information and is required at community colleges it's as exciting to read as drug warning labels. And you practically need a rossetta stone to drag the pertinent information out of the chapters.
The student CD included requires the student to have AutoCad loaded on their computer to access it. So you need to invest another $800 or so in a seperate computer program in order to access the student disk at home. Otherwise...well, it makes a cool drink coaster.
I only acquired this book because it was required for my class. I hardly even cracked the cover. I used my 2004 copy of "Mastering AutoCad" by George Omura and highly recommend that instead. I only refered to Shumaker's book when encountering a 2005 upgrade (of which there aren't many).
Omura's book has an easy to use index, goes beyond "the basics" and includes a disk with a trial version of ACAD that you can use for at least 30 days. I could look up commands and subjects in the index, breeze through the overview and be functional in minutes.
Shumaker's book is adequate if you have zero ACAD experience, the patience of Job to trudge through the text, no other options or someone is offering to just GIVE it to you. Otherwise and for personal use, go for Omura.
Oh, and don't forget, AutoCad has a HELP menu (F1) if you happen to be stuck for an answer during a test.
AutoCAD Book.......2005-09-29
In the book there are purple boxes with commands in them that are really helpful.
lots of info: probably in there somewhere.......2000-03-19
while this book appears to exhaustively document the program, I could rarely find helpful information when I ran into specific problems while using the program. I'm currently looking for a book with better clarity and organization
Supervisor Drafting & Graphics Services, City of Winnipeg.......2000-01-06
I have used Terence Shumakers books for teaching for the last eight years. This latest one covering AutoCAD 2000 is no exception. It is one of the best books to teach from, excellent subject explanations and easy to follow samples exercises. I do disagree with the order Terence follows, but it is easily overcome and does not reflect on the book its self.
An excellent book for beginners and intermediate level........1998-12-11
I have had a chance to review sections of this publication in our local library. I found that it is truly a well written book with lots of exercises and helpful hints for the drafting/design discipline. However, I did not find anything on 3D modeling. Perhaps, you can mention a similar publication (same authors?) with the 3D modeling feature, treated with the same details. Thanks for the info. Is this book available in Toronto, Canada? (bookstore please?).
