Customer Reviews:
The best fashion book I've found!.......2006-08-10
This little book is the absolute best fashion book I've found, and I've looked at alot of them. This book helped me, a non-fashion type person, figure out what I look good in and redo my wardrobe. Now, I only see clothes I use and like in my closet, and I have plenty of clothes! Pretty great news for a non-fashion, short and not slim person! :)

Simple IS easy, after reading this book........2005-08-05
Since I was curious after reading all the great reviews, I borrowed this book from the library. It is a pretty good book, but not worth the high prices they're asking on the used market unless it's autographed.
Good Points: Empasizes paring down your closet so that every piece you have works; lets you know it's okay to have a favorite outfit in more than one color or fabric (i.e. a "uniform" so to speak). Comes down on the fashion industry as part of the reason women don't look as good as they could in clothing (wouldn't be surprised at all if this is the reason the book is out of print). Emphasizes putting together "outfits" in your closet, as opposed to hanging your separates in sections (although if you do this paring down right, thinking of your entire closet as a travel wardrobe, then everything should go with everything, regardless of what you pull out). Great section on how to take care of your clothes.
Bad: No pictures, unless you count caricatures of the authors. No real descriptions on how to dress to cover figure flaws, just an occasional mention of some of the camouflage dressing of the authors.
It's a small, mass-market paperback and almost half of the book is repetition and/or fluff. One example is when they say that one reason to shop is to replace a proven (i.e. "workhorse") wardrobe item. An entire paragraph is spent explaining why one of the authors replaced a black turtleneck with a cashmere one after being dissatisfied with cheaper ones. Who cares?
Even though this book talks about personal style, as do other books, the authors seem to think that everyone is passionate about style--believe me, not everyone is. Some of us want to look good, but have better things to do with our time and money than spend it on clothing. Some things like comfort and ease of care are important to us.
Bottom line: 95% of what is in this book (including "capsule" or outfit dressing" is in other books, although this one does a decent job of condensing it into a compact form (but it could be smaller and then even more useful). I think the title is a misnomer, because none of their exercises is difficult to do. Get it from your library, if you can.
Until this book is back in print, I would suggest the following books:
Does This Make Me Look Fat? by Leah Feldon
Brenda's Wardrobe Companion by Brenda Kinsel
I Don't Have a Thing to Wear by Judie Taggart, Jackie Walker
Ready to Wear by Mary Lou Andre
and if you need color pictures:
The Lucky Shopping Manual by Andrea Linett
Dying does not devalue your work! .......2005-03-11
This wonderful book is not likely to be reprinted, unfortunately, after the death in 2004 of co-author Olivia Goldsmith (which was the writer name of Justine Rendal, born Randy Goldfield), who died of a reaction to anesthesia during cosmetic surgery. That doesn't discount her as a fashion consultant, now, does it? She changed her name to suit her purposes, and she reassures us that girls who think their bodies are too big can change their style and look great in their clothes--we've got the power if we've got the nerve! If she wanted surgery and had the means to afford it, I say go for it, and don't let fear stop you. Better dead than afraid to go for what you want, and the people who criticize her for it can hole up in their apartments and tell the rest of us what not to do with our lives, eh?
Goldsmith and co-author Amy Fine Collins have written an empowering, witty, and even spiritual book in Simple Isn't Easy, which I got through interlibrary loan. Much of their advice sounds Zen: you can do more with less, and being a consumer won't fill your internal holes. I wouldn't have thought it, but I would be happy to pay $25 or $30 for this little paperback on the secondary (used) market. The strategy for weeding out one's closet is practical, and the concept of finding a personal "uniform," whatever it is, lends one a truly distinctive style. This was one of the better self-help books I've read. These women hold your hand and walk you through it, and you laugh and roll your eyes at yourself all the way.
This book gets only 3 stars because one of the authors had the audacity to die young, which frightens people. No, wait, it's still a wonderful book, isn't it?? So how about we give it the FIVE STARS it deserves!
A COLLECTOR'S ITEM NOW, WHY?.......2004-05-20
I've heard so much about this book from adqaintances yet none of them have a copy. It seems they've all lent their copies out and never got them back. Everything I've heard is very positive and inspiring. BUT, REALLY, $64.37 (STARTING PRICE) FOR A USED MASS MARKET PAPERBACK? What on earth is so special about this book? Do you truly believe that someone is going to pay such a rediculous price for a used soft cover book? Come on now, this is NOT A RARE FIRST EDITION!!! There probably wasn't even a hard cover edition. I understand that the author died in the O.R. while having plastic surgery recently. Well, Dr. Robert Atkins also met an untimely death last year, but his books haven't sored to a such a ridiculous price! If there are so many women clamoring to get their hands on a copy, perhaps the publisher may be enticed into reprinting it.
It works........2004-03-22
Almost ten years have passed since I read this book. What I leaned from this book stayed with me since then. I naturally started following after the rules and it became my habit. Now, I never have to be late for work, trying to find which one to wear. What a relief. It took me almost ten years to follow the rules completely. It takes time to know which style you are most comfortable with, to know at stores which items you are going to wear for many years to come and which ones you won't before you buy them , and to be able to dicard the items you like but do not wear anymore. Recently, I found out that it is even more time-saving to have a tailor to duplicate my favorite suits or dresses. (They are not that expensive, considering I wear them twice a week for at least 4 seasons.)
When I moved out NYC, I left the book to the trash can with my other things, not knowing it is such a valuable book. I only read one time, but it is lasting in my mind forever. This is such a book.
Book Description
This book presents the econometric analysis of single-equation and simultaneous-equation models in which the jointly dependent variables can be continuous, categorical, or truncated. Despite the traditional emphasis on continuous variables in econometrics, many of the economic variables encountered in practice are categorical (those for which a suitable category can be found but where no actual measurement exists) or truncated (those that can be observed only in certain ranges). Such variables are involved, for example, in models of occupational choice, choice of tenure in housing, and choice of type of schooling. Models with regulated prices and rationing, and models for program evaluation, also represent areas of application for the techniques presented by the author.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but are you REALLY sure you need this?.......2005-02-03
This book surely is a classic treatment of limited dependent variable models. However, I suspect most researchers, and definitely almost all graduate stduents will NOT need this book.
1) First, it is VERY outdated. Note that this book has been written in 1983. That is more than *20* years ago. There is nothing here on nonpametric and semiparametric models, which are becoming the standard in this field. For this, a good reference would be Pagan and Ullah, which also contain results for nonparametric and semiparametric general density and regression estimation. The fact that this book is outdated not only means that lots and lots of important tools are not covered here, but it also means that it covers many results and estimators that are no longer considered important.
2) Second, and especially if you are a graduate student, all or almost all the results you will need for your courses is covered very well in textbooks that also cover a wealth of other materials (such as Wooldridge, Amemiya, Ruud, Davidson and McKinnon etc.).
So, overall, do not buy this book simply because it's in your syllabus. Have a look at it first in a library, and then decide if you really need it. But chances are that you won't. The book still deserved 5 stars for what it meant when it was first published.
the best of it's kind.......2004-05-25
in microeconometrics methods is one of the best books one could have. to acomplish this book you need another in panel data, like for example cheng hsiao's book. With this two books you have all you need to work in microeconometrics
good book, useless index.......2000-07-26
the biggest problem with this book is the poor index. it is pretty much only by author, with almost no subject listings. other than that this is one of the best guides to applied econometrics that i have seen.
A Classic.......1999-08-03
This book is a classic, having educated generations of Economists on how to do micro-econometrics. But, published in 1983, it is rather out of date and crying out for a new edition.
For Probit and Tobit Regressions....This is the book to have.......1998-08-04
Any graduate student must have this book on his shleves...Maddala explains probit, logit, tobit regressions very clearly....Examples are concrete and based on daily problems....A must have!!!
Book Description
This text introduces students progressively to various aspects of qualitative models and assumes a knowledge of basic principles of statistics and econometrics. After the introduction, Chapters 2 through 6 present models with endogenous qualitative variables, examining dichotomous models, model specification, estimation methods, descriptive usage, and qualitative panel data. The final two chapters describe models that explain variables assumed by discrete or continuous positive variables.
Customer Reviews:
It is a good book. But publisher misled readers........2000-12-05
This is a good book. But the publisher (intentionally?) forgot to mention it is a translation of the 1990 French version. Instead, the publisher dated the book 2000. The lastest paper cited in the book was 1987. The publisher failed to mention the book's origin anywhere on its own web until you buy the book and find it on the inside cover.

Book Description
The book provides a simple, intuitive introduction to regression models for qualitative and discrete dependent variables, to sample selection models, and to event history models, all in the context of maximum likelihood estimation. It presents a wide range of commonly used models. The book thereby enables the reader to become a critical consumer of current empirical social science research and to conduct own empirical analyses. The book includes numerous examples, illustrations, and exercises. It can be used as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate, a Master`s or a first-year Ph.D. course in microdata analysis, and as a reference for practitioners and researchers.

Edited by Robert Cording, Shelli Jankowski-Smith, and E. J. Miller Laino A new paperback edition that celebrates the Fab Four with stories, poems, and essays.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great book with many graet moments.......1999-03-16
This ia a book of many poems, short stories, essays and more. It is solely about how the fab-four affected many peoples lives. It was done very well and has many great authors, such as marcus allen in it. When I read this book it really made me think of when I was a teenager and how I felt about the beatles. This editors in this book did a wonderful job with it. Many of these great clips of writing are about how children were alowed to stay up that memorable night, when the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan Show. Others tell about how they actually got to meet and talk to their favorite Beatle. One Story tells of a young girl who goes to John's house and meets him. All she does is say hi to him but he answers rudely and she is embarrased. If you can read this wonderful book.
Only fitfully interesting.......1998-10-30
This book was edited by editors with VERY literary credentials. And that is one of the things that is wrong with this book. It has a bunch of poems about the Beatles, a bunch of short stories about the Beatles (actually, the Beatles are only peripherally a part of most of the fiction), so there is too much that is dryly academic in this book. And then the first-person pieces are mostly fans' memoirs, that any Beatles fan could write. Having said that, I gave the book three stars instead of one or two, mainly because of a fascinating piece "The Beatles in Tonypandy." That what happens in this piece seems rather improbable, is what makes it so entertaining. The Beatles in the mid-sixties went and stayed with a pigeon expert in the South of Wales for about six days. This town of Tonypandy was so remote, no one recognized the Beatles, and they could go about as they wanted. I don't want to tell the rather odd things that happened during these six days, because I think it will spoil it for you. But it is a fascinating piece. Whether it's worth the price of the book, I don't know, because I checked mine out of the library. But it is great piece to read for any Beatles fan. The other piece that is interesting in parts is "Sod Manila!" which includes the article's author witnessing a conversation between the Beatles in their hotel room in the Phillipines, when the country was ready to tear them apart for snubbing the Marcoses. The other pieces (except for a few so-so ones) are ones a flipped quickly through. So, except for the two gems, this is a dry affair.

Book Description
Learn CCNP BCMSN 642-811 network switching concepts with the only early stage book authorized by Cisco Systems.
CCNP Self-Study: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN), 2nd Edition, is a self-study learning resource for CCNP and CCDP certification candidates preparing for the BCMSN 642-811 exam. This self-study resource includes sample questions and answers and lab excercises in each chapter. Including coverage of intermediate to advance networking switching technologies, this book helps CCNP candidates, as well as networking professionals, gain an understanding of switching fundamentals and best practices. Switching topics found in this book include Layer 2 and 3 switching, AVVID deployments in multilayer switching networks, QoS, CEF-based MLS, Catalyst switching architectures, and an introduction to Metro Ethernet. This is the only book authorized by Cisco Systems for early-stage, self-study learning of the BCMSN topics.
The CCNP certification indicates advanced or journeyman knowledge of networks. One of the four requirements to achieve CCNP certification is passing the BCMSN exam. Focused on intermediate-level switching issues, the BCMSN exam assesses a candidate's skill at building campus networks using multilayer switching technologies over high speed Ethernet. The exam addresses both routing and switching concepts, covering both Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies including IP multicast. The BCMSN exam is also a requirement for CCDP certification.
CCIE candidates will also find this book useful for studying the switching portion of the CCIE written and lab tests.
This book is a complete rewrite of the best-selling Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks from Cisco Press from Cisco Press. In addition, this book contains two chapters outside the realm of the BCMSN switching exam, Introduction to Storage Networking and Introduction to Catalyst Switching Architectures.

Customer Reviews:
This review is for the 3rd edition ISBN 1587052199.......2006-02-06
This is the second CCNP book I have purchased (and my 8th Cisco Press book). I have mostly been satisfied with the quality and reduced number of errors/typos in these technical books until now. This book is filled with errors and typos. For example, Catalyst 4305, Catalyst 3570, NAS = Network Area Storage, DCHP snooping, MFSC, Fire Services module!, etc. One figure is repeated twice to illustrate two different concepts. The questions and answers numbering dosen't match in the appendix. The text doesn't reflect the figures in many instances. Finally, the author mentions concepts without explaining them. There are even some mistakes in command line examples!
This is very disconcerting because it is the Cisco authorized self-study book for CCNP switching FOUNDATION learning. "Foundation" learning???? Having almost finished reading it, I am not understanding MANY concepts mentioned. I cannot beleive the 3 technical reviewers did not catch all these errors and improved the convoluted writing style before the book went to press.
Overall, the quality of this book leaves much to be desired.
I seriously think I made a mistake purchasing this book which I thought would be the best considering this is the Third edition!! Consider another BCMSN book like the one by David Hucaby (ISBN 1-58720-142-9) instead. It HAS to be better than this one!
This review is for the 3rd edition.......2005-10-08
CCNP Self-Study: Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks (BCMSN) Third Edition
by Richard Froom, Balaji Sivasubramanian, Erum Frahim ISBN 1587052199
Very soon this book will take the place of Cisco LAN switching which is a must read for everyone preparing for the CCIE R & S and CCIE Security Exam. It covers all the latest features and even though a lot of concepts presented are outside the spectrum of the CCNP (Building Cisco Multilayer Switched Networks) Exam they are needed for a complete understanding of the Catalyst switches. Now the BCMSN exam is not what it used to be and so reading book gives the necessary confidence needed to take this tough simulation based exam.
It explains in depth the building blocks of Cisco multilayer switched networks from mostly a Catalyst switch and Cisco IOS perspective which is capable of configuring both Layer 2 and Layer 3 features. Cisco multilayer switches offer additional Layer 2 features to enhance the availability of networks and to as an aid in troubleshooting and even though these services are not mandatory features of multilayer switched networks their use is recommended as among the best practices in the industry.
The book explains in detail the various commands available for troubleshooting purposes and when to use them as well as the output to expect from each.
Each chapter discusses a single feature of the multilayer switch in detail along with it implementation, troubleshooting and its benefits to the network.
Cisco Catalyst switches provide a wide range of QoS features which address the needs of voice, video and data applications sharing a single infrastructure. This book explains how to use the QoS features and services and in Cisco IOS and Cisco CatOS Software in order to design and implement networks that confirm to either to the IETF integrated service (InterServ) model or the differentiated services (DiffServ) model.
The chapter on Security covers several important features from a security perspective. It focuses on port security, DHCP snooping, IP source Guard, dynamic ARP inspection, 802.1X and access list applications also called data plane features.
The coauthor Richard Froom, CCIE # 5102 is a technical leader for the Data Center, Switching and Wireless (DSW) Storage Area Networking (SAN) Test Lab at Cisco Systems.
The coauthor Balaji Sivasubramanian, CCNP, is an escalation engineer for the Gigabit Switching Business Unit (GSBU) at Cisco Systems.
The coauthor Erum Frahim, CCIE # 7549 is a senior support engineer working for the Data Center, Switching and Wireless (DSW) Storage Area Networking (SAN) Test Lab at Cisco Systems.
I feel this book would be extremely useful for professionals preparing for the CCNP or CCDP or CCIE certification Exams as well as for practical application. This is a great reference for Catalyst switches running Cisco IOS software.
I give this book 5 stars on a scale of 5, 5 being the highest. I strongly recommend this book.
Niloufer Tamboly, CISSP
Good Prep for current exam.......2005-04-08
I bought this book to use in my preparation for the simulation-based BCMSN exam. I needed to renew my CCNP/CCDP and did not want to take the composite exam so I opted to take both the BSCI and BCMSN. I pretty much used only this book to prepare (of course, I had passed the previous version of this exam so the previous statement is not completely accurate). I passed with flying colors and credit this book. I would recommend it for that purpose.
Outstanding CCNP Resource.......2005-02-02
This is an exceptionally well-written book.
I'm in the process of renewing my CCNP and am finding this work to refreshingly accurate, well written and well edited - which unfortunately is not always the case with Cisco Press books.
As a result I'll be picking up a copy of the author's Catalyst QOS book soon.
