Book Description
How do we measure happiness? Focusing on subjective measures as a proxy for welfare and well-being, this book finds ways to do that. Subjective measures have been used by psychologists, sociologists, political scientists, and, more recently, economists to answer a variety of scientifically and politically relevant questions. Van Praag, a pioneer in this field since 1971, and Ferrer-i-Carbonell present in this book a generally applicable methodology for the analysis of subjective satisfaction. Drawing on a range of surveys on people's satisfaction with their jobs, income, housing, marriages, and government policy, among other areas of life, this book shows how satisfaction with life "as a whole" is an aggregate of these domain satisfactions. Using German, British, Dutch, and Russian data, the authors cover a wide range of topics, even some not usually considered part of economic study. The book makes a distinction between actual satisfaction levels and individual norms, and in this way complements Van Praag's earlier work within the Leyden School with his later work in "happiness research". Among the many topics covered, the authors discuss: individuals' memory and anticipation processes and the estimation of adaptation phenomena (how individuals adapt to changing circumstances); the effect of reference groups on income norms and satisfaction with income; the importance of climate for well-being, including the development of a climate-equivalence index; the trade-offs between chronic diseases and income when well-being is kept constant; the damage of aircraft noise on well-being; the construction of a new talent tax tariff; and inequality from a satisfaction perspective, including the definition of "satisfaction inequalities", a natural extension of income inequality and poverty. This groundbreaking book presents new and fruitful methodology that consitutes a welcome addition to the social sciences.

Book Description
Investment and all other economic actions depend on 'subjective' expectations. The problem is how to construct a theory of expectations that assumes people interpret their situations in unpredictable ways. Building on the evolutionary economics of F.A.Hayek, Koppl gives us such a theory. This includes a theory of 'Big Players', demonstrating that discretionary policy interventions create ignorance and uncertainty. The volume uses innovative methods to address many vital problems in economic theory, and connects with many other schools of economics including New Institutional Economics, Constitutional Economics and Post Walsarian Economics.

Description:
Diverse beliefs is an important mechanism for propagation of fluctuations, money nonneutrality and efficacy of monetary policy. Since expectations affect demand, our theory shows economic fluctuations are mostly driven by varying demand not supply shocks. Using a competitive model with flexible prices in which agents hold Rational Belief (see Kurz, 1994. Economic Theory 4, 877-900) we show that (i) our economy replicates well the empirical record of fluctuations in the U.S. (ii) Under monetary rules without discretion, monetary policy has a strong stabilization effect and an aggressive anti-inflationary policy can reduce inflation volatility to zero. (iii) The statistical Phillips curve changes substantially with policy instruments and activist policy rules render it vertical. (iv) Although prices are flexible, money shocks result in less than proportional change in inflation hence aggregate price level is 'sticky' with respect to money shocks. (v) Discretion in monetary policy adds a random element to policy and increases volatility. The impact of discretion on the efficacy of policy depends upon the structure of market beliefs about future discretionary decisions. We study two rationalizable beliefs. In one, market beliefs weaken the effect of policy and in the second, beliefs bolster policy outcomes and discretion could be a desirable attribute of the policy rule. Since the central bank does not know any more than the private sector, discretion is beneficial only in extraordinary cases. Hence, the weight of the argument suggests that policy should be transparent and abandon discretion except for rare circumstances. (vi) Our model suggests the current real policy is only mildly activist and aims mostly to target inflation.

Adams write some of the best prose ever written.......2005-02-24
Cut to the chase: Nick Adam's A Midlife Journey is a must read for all who face midlife. The chapter "Wolf Tracks," is the best piece of prose I have ever read. No kidding. For those who relish or fear risk-exercise or have experienced (or fear)actual combat,"Wolf Tracks" is balm for the soul.

Book Description
Nearly 300 letters reveal Chopin as both man and artist and illuminate his fascinating world — Europe of the 1830s and 1840s. "They abound in delightful gossip, are merry rather than malicious, are engagingly witty, and at times their humor becomes positively Rabelaisian." — Books. Preface. Index.
Customer Reviews:
Researching Chopin.......2007-05-13
Enjoyed reading his letters as it gave an insight to the man Chopin was.
If you REALLY want to get to know Chopin read his letters!.......2006-07-27
These letters make wonderful reading. Chopin's writing style is direct, at times humorous, and gives a great insight in his daily life, from his very young year till just before his death in 1849.
In these letters he does not much write about his art (he hardly did that anyway: most of his thoughts on music are written down by his friend Eugene Delacroix in his journal, based on their conversations).
These letters cover a wide variety of subjects: holiday-planning, chit-chat,long letters to his sister Ludwika, letters to his lover George Sand and her children, rude business letters (no romantic dreamer here!),sad letters, passionate letters of a young Chopin, etc.
If you want to get to know the person Chopin this is a must-read.
Deeply poignant.......2000-06-15
Reading the early passages in Chopin's letters, one is almost heartbroken by the youth, the enthusiasm, the childlike good humor evident therein. Chopin at 17 was a wide-eyed kid from Warsaw with unparalleled musical talent and his whole life in front of him, the world apparently his oyster. To read his letters in subsequent years -- after the Russian invasion of Poland that stranded him in Paris; the abortive betrothal to Maria Wodzinska; the complex and finally tragic relationship with George Sand -- is to watch a man reach adulthood step by step. Though they contain only small, tantalizing glimpses of Chopin's opinions on music, the letters make for an effective counterpoint to his immortal compositions. The man who wrote the great Ballades and Scherzi was just a man like any other: he was annoyed at lazy servants, he unconsciously exploited his friends, he wanted to move in the circles of great aristocrats, he had provincial and prejudiced opinions. The lesson is banal, but true, and vividly made clear in these letters.
a fascinating book.......2000-01-13
Reading Chopin's letters is a unique privilege we have today. No lover of Chopin should be without this book.

Complete collection of Chopin's journals and private papers........2000-04-01
i really enjoyed reading chopin's private papers -
although what we have left of chopin's personal documets are minimal, this book contains all of it.
still, we can continue to infer and speculate on her life. chopin can be seen as a young and budding woman while she schooled at the sacred heart. and, then travel with her on her eye-opening honeymoon to europe.
this book lends us a more closer look at one of the great female writers of the 19th century.

Book Description
Since the late nineteenth century, amateur operatics groups have played a major role in extending musical theater from the commercial stage into the lives of local communities. In a potent mixture of operettas, Grand Opera and Broadway musicals, amateur operatics provided an important avenue for public self-expression and gender definition. This major new study examines this fascinating outlet for the expression of popular taste.

Customer Reviews:
A good account, but not quite complete.......2005-05-27
Exploring television's history, these authors suggest that the downfall of television programming is a result of both government regulation and deregulation. They offer hope that television will improve. This book offers historical perspective. I would like to have seen more on other First Amendment abuses.
A Very Informative Read.......2004-08-28
Personally I found this to be a great read, very informative. It really opened my eyes to aspects of the media industry with which I was completely unfamiliar. I totally understood Mr. Walker's points on the declining quality and motives behind mass media, and agreed with him whole heartedly. His references, which were plentiful, were a great help, as I found myself seeking out many of the sources from which he drew his information. Having spent a great many years in the media industry, Walker has seen much of its evolution, as well as its degeneration into many of the avarice-driven machinations so characteristic of its present-day form. As for the Kirkus Review of the book, I have to say I think they're a little too high up on that high-horse of theirs. This book was a fascinating read, very engaging; I pretty much read it from first to last page in a matter of days, I was so enthralled by it. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the workings of our contemporary media, how it got to where it is, and where it just might be going. AND, what it could be: Baker hasn't lost his idealism after so many years in the industry. Mr. Baker's style makes for an easy and engaging read, which is quite good when dealing with such complex subject matter.
Television has more than fulfilled its promise.......1999-02-05
In this historically wide ranging book, the authors overlook the large numbers of excellent programs on many of the cable channels. My understanding of the authors point of view is that the government has lost a wonderful outlet for its propaganda. Cable television has lead to the fulfillment of televisions promise, and has also rendered PBS obsolete.
Intelligent, insightful and interesting!.......1998-09-19
If you are at all interested the history of television, and how it got to be the vast wasteland that it is, you need to read this book! It ultimately gives a glimmer of hope to those of us who think television is too far 'Down the Tube' to be redeemed.
Highly recommended........1998-05-28
I am the CEO of a public television station, so I read the book with great interest and in an informed and critical frame of mind. I found it intelligent, analytical, and very felicitous in its combination of fact and philosophical judgment. It's a pleasure to read, and should be enjoyable and useful to anyone nterested in television, whether as a viewer or as a professional.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introductory Book.......2005-10-30
I actually feel that this book is a mixed bag. On one hand, the concepts are intuitively presented and are easy to understand. On the other hand, the book doesn't delve too much into technical details, which may or may not be a godsend to various students. Personally, I'd rather use the Drozdek Data Structures text, since it goes into much more detail into analysis and logic behind choosing various data structures and algorithms in order to implement an ADT.
Anyway, it's still a great textbook for an introductory course in data structures. Just be sure to get another textbook on the same material down the road if you want to get a more detailed understanding of the concepts presented.
Crisp as New........2005-09-17
The book shouldn't be called Used, its was Crisp as New, and exactly what you wanna expect at the start of a new class, having a colourful mak free book in your hands.
Great book.......2005-06-18
The coverage of C++ and data structures looks pretty good. There are lots of programming examples, and the book is written very well. I'm recommending it for our 2nd year course in data structures and C++. Our students know Java, but not C++, so it's been a challenge finding a data structures book that packages a semi-introductory version of C++ with a standard course in data structures. This book appears to be the best suited out of about 5-10 books that I've reviewed for this course.
Data Structures with C++ and STL not only for C programmers.......2004-09-28
I am teaching the second programming / first data structure course in the department of electrical and computer engineering. I have used the first edition of this book several times, and as of fall of 2004 I am into the third of semester of using this second edition as a mandatory text.
This book is very good for students who already know how to program in C, C++ or Java. The first C or C++ course does not have to cover introduction to OOP though. My students learn C part of C++ in the first programming course. This book covers object oriented programming part of C++, and introduces/reintroduces pointers, file IO with streams, and C++ strings (good for former Java programmers). Then it follows into data structures. It starts with its own definitions of dynamic array that grows, and a simple linked list as basic data containers. Then it focuses on organizing access to data with stack and queue, and then migrates to the standard template library (STL). Everything is kept on the undergraduate student level. All other STL books I know assume that you are already an expert in programming or at lest for students after two programming courses, and are too difficult for average non-CS students.
I originally rated the first edition with four-stars only because it introduced pointers very late, out of the proper sequence and added the fifth star for the unique blend of introduction to OOP C++ and data structures, and STL. However, this edition is free from this inconvenience and it also makes C++ and data structures course accessible to former Java programmers. It gets true five stars from me this time.
