Product Description
The road to global security," writes Jeremy Rifkin, "lies in lessening our dependence on Middle East oil and making sure that all people on Earth have access to the energy they need to sustain life. Weaning the world off oil and turning it toward hydrogen is a promissory note for a safer world." Rifkin's international bestseller The Hydrogen Economy presents the clearest, most comprehensive case for moving ourselves away from the destructive and waning years of the oil era toward a new kind of energy regime. Hydrogen-one of the most abundant substances in the universe-holds the key, Rifkin argues, to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable world.
Author Biography: Jeremy Rifkin is the bestselling author of The End of Work, The Biotech Century, and The Age of Access. A fellow at the Wharton School's Executive Education Program, he is president of The Foundation on Economic Trends in Washington, D.C.
Synopsis
Well-known as a social critic and the author of such popular books as The End of Work and The Biotech Century, Rifkin (Foundation on Economic Trends, Washington, DC) looks ahead to the next great economic revolution predicted to be fueled by hydrogen rather than fossil fuels. He considers the "Islamist" wild card in what he terms "reglobization from the bottom up." Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Description
The analysis prediction and interpolation of economic and other time series has a long history and many applications. Major new developments are taking place, driven partly by the need to analyze financial data. The five papers in this book describe those new developments from various viewpoints and are intended to be an introduction accessible to readers from a range of backgrounds. The book arises out of the second Seminaire European de Statistique (SEMSTAT) held in Oxford in December 1994. This brought together young statisticians from across Europe, and a series of introductory lectures were given on topics at the forefront of current research activity. The lectures form the basis for the five papers contained in the book. The papers by Shephard and Johansen deal respectively with time series models for volatility, i.e. variance heterogeneity, and with cointegration. Clements and Hendry analyze the nature of prediction errors. A complementary review paper by Laird gives a biometrical view of the analysis of short time series. Finally Astrup and Nielsen give a mathematical introduction to the study of option pricing. Whilst the book draws its primary motivation from financial series and from multivariate econometric modelling, the applications are potentially much broader.

Book Description
From Chaucer to Vikram Seth and Victoria Wood; from Byron to John Updike; from Augustan satire to advertising jingles; from G. K. Chesterton to Wendy Cope - this superb anthology is notable above all for its breadth. It is truly international in scope, bringing together poets from far beyond the British Isles. Drawing on many different types of verse, from epigrams to street ballads, from clerihew to music-hall lyrics, from the double-dactyl of the calypso, it offers an exceptionally wide range of comic pleasures. The poems in this collection are by turns subtle, down-to-earth, macabre, ingenious, acerbic, ribald, and cheerful; written to amuse, they call forth laughter and delight in equal measure. The established classics of comic verse, writers such as Tom Hood, W. S. Gilbert, and Ogden Nash, are represented in force, but many unfamiliar or unexpected names are also included; so are many recent writers - the classics of the future. This collection undoubtedly contains matter of great historical interest, but the emphasis throughout is firmly on enjoyment.
Book Description
A witty collection of more than 550 limericks from two world-famous writers, and all of them just 'naughty' enough to make this 'literary form' hilarious fun!
Customer Reviews:
Funny! Bawdy yet witty!.......2002-01-16
A must for your favorite limerick lover. These clever rhymes will have you on the floor in no time! Rolling with laughter, that is! I love Asimov and Ciardi paired in this way. Makes a great gift.
The Best.......2001-03-20
Isaac Asimov and John Ciardi were both two brilliant men the likes of whom the world is lucky to have known. Both full of genius in their own way, they were, one imagines, excellent friends, and yet equally excellent enemies.
This is one of the finest collections of limericks I have seen, certainly one of the finest contemporary collections, and the introductions to the two books contained within make the bouquet so much more rich. Their sparring of words, of dashing insults and quick recoveries, is almost as fun to read as the poetry itself.
And the limericks... ah, delightfully scandalous. I suspect you will find yourself respecting John's concept of meter and stylistic master-strokes far above Isaac's, but at the same time will feel that somehow, for all his lack of understanding the mechanics properly, Isaac understands what the content of a limerick is meant to be.
That content, of course dear friends, is most often risque. I would certainly not caution parents against letting their children read this collection, but do be warned: The limerick is a bawdy form, and it is hard to fit anything but lewd intonations into its loose meter.
I recommend this book, for a gift, for something to read on a plane, for something for the WC, a coffee-table book, or any other use you might conceive of. And I will leave you with my own feeble attempt at the form, written post-haste and most likely in poor-taste.
"A book of fine lim'ricks was writ,
And though many said they were just... pooh,
I laughed till I wept,
And this fine book I kept,
And to this day I still will read it."
This is one of the few small 2nd. hand book I used to have........2000-08-04
I really can not remember if I read all of the limericks, but before leaving I gave this excellent, witty, naughty book to my eldest son, who must have thought his Mom was rather 'naughty' herself to have such a kind of literature! Few of us can write limericks, because in a few words you have to paint the whole picture and what a one that is! I have the highest esteem for Mr. Isaac Asimov, who sadly enough, left us too. I seem to remember he did not enjoy at all flying airplanes. But he left us all sorts of very interesting material to be read by us. I give 5 stars to this collection of limericks. Thank you Mr. Asimov.
Unexpected humor from two great minds........1999-07-22
I am not the type to be aroused by a bawdy limerick; nay I seldom get past the first line in a bar. Whilst searching for another book by one of my favorite authors (Asimov) I came across this little number. It certainly demonstrates that one needs to have a command of the language to be a good limericist. Asimov and Ciardi prove this again and again in this slightly racy very intelligent collaboration. From start to finish it was filled with excellent belly laughs and some very thoughtful verses. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to see yet another side of Asimov

Book Description
An in-depth approach to mastering arpeggios for guitarists, beginning with simple arpeggio studies, this book progresses through simple concepts and tunes then proceeds to tackle some of the great standards that jazz musicians play. The lesson concludes with advanced arpeggio concepts including super-imposition of unusual arpeggios over various chord types to create startling tonal clusters. This is a must-have for all serious guitarists who want to achieve great technique while developing their sense of harmony. Companion CD included.
Customer Reviews:
40 pages of arpeggios.......2007-03-30
You get 40 pages of arpeggios in this book. I thought I was getting at least 180 pages of text, but I was wrong. Not to worry. You get a short workout while following each note in each arpeggio. After a while, you end up learning how to solo over each chord in a standard -- similar to John Coltrane. John Coltrane was known for soloing using a unique scale pattern per chord. This book helps you learn how to form each scale pattern per chord. Of course, you could also solo over the key of the song. I find soloing over each chord more melodic. It's up to you.
So, get this book if you're looking to learn how to improve on your melodic solos, but remember, there are only 40 pages in this book --- 4 stars!!!!!
average content.......2007-03-19
this book doesnt contain the amount of information that you might expect. If you have no idea about apreggios then you will learn somthing from it however if you already have a basic knowledge of arpeggios this book wont be very helpful.it does howveer have a few nice superimposing ideas but nothing spectacular.overall i was dissapointed with the book and could of obtained the information from the web . chord arpeggio shapes arnt hard to come across.the book includes a cd but there are no backing tracks to practice your arpeggios
Great arpeggio method.......2007-01-03
I own a lot of jazz methods and I would rate this one near the top in terms of usefulness. Besides relating the arps to chord types this method gives many examples of how to apply them along with very thorough analysis of application.
I highly recommend this book to those learning how to use arpeggios & chromatics to create interesting solos.
good arpeggio specific study.......2006-07-20
This book is definitly a great resource on arpeggios and working them into your playing. It focuses on jazz, as the title suggests. First Mimi shows you a couple simple arpeggio examples and shapes, and then a few examples of ways to practice them over progressions. After that she gives you a few reference pages of all the arpeggio shapes you'd need. These reference pages are great. They have the chord inversions imposed on each arpeggio shape so you can easily see how they work together and easily match them up. So it incidently kinda helps you review chord inversions and drop 2 voicings.
After the reference pages, the arpeggio study section starts. The tunes are bases off real standards (summertime, night and day, all the things you are, etc). The arpeggio studies involve playing the proper arpeggio for each chord throughout the whole tune. She gives examples of how she does it and then provides an explaination of what she's doing in each bar and why. For example, she explains some substitutions she likes and such.
The book comes with a CD of Mimi playing each example. It's good to hear the examples played, but really not a necessity. It would have been more helpful if the studies had just the background rhythm/chords so you can practice playing arpeggios over them...rather than it having her arpeggios played over it. I've been entering the chords into Band In A Box and using that as a play-a-long to practice playing arepggios to.
There's an advanced section after the studies that I haven't gotten to yet, but she provides substitution ideas and things she likes to do with arpeggios.
Overall, this book is very helpful and covers the subject matter. I bought this book in the hopes that going through it would help get arpeggios into my playing, and so far by working on these studies it is definitly helping me learn the arpeggios by applying them. This book will probably always stick around for me because of the arpeggio/chord inversion references pages are useful.
Solid techniques for playing over jazz changes.......2004-09-24
This book is fantastic. If you are like me, you probably learned how to play guitar to pop songs. You learned chords and scales, and took a modal approach to solo instrumentals... then you try to play something progressive, and you realize that you're fairly limited: how do they do that?
This breaks the chain of confusion and gets you oriented to any number of jazz chord changes by learning arpeggios from the chords themselves. You can then "play the changes" for real; not having to hang onto some fixed scale or pattern (which gets boring to the listener). This has pop / rock / blues applications too (e.g. sweep picking uses arpeggios). I highly recommend this book as a kind of Rosetta Stone for the aspiring jazz / advanced improviser. I took a ten week course with Mimi before she wrote this book, and this book truly distills the main learning points that we all found so difficult to comprehend. With the CD, you can practice anytime, and you won't have to test Mimi's patience! I am so glad she wrote this book.

POW ZAP BANG BIFF.......2007-05-29
Maybe I'm in the minority hear but I just didn't fall all over this autobiography. Yes, I loved the show and the comdic takes on the Dynamic Duo. This book however was nothing spectacular, we don't get any real behind-the-scenes stories, just some light brief anecdotes. West covers his life in quick jumps and says this book was written for the fans of the Batman show. He's admirable in not badmouthing people and keeping it light and wispy reading but there's no meat to his bio. It's rather bland and he seems to think his acting was much better than it ever was. He seemed more focused on telling you, which women he met were the hottest and teases at romantic interludes. I truly appreciate the effort Mr. West put into his story and it's certainly fun to read and you'll read it quickly. The best chapter is his life after Batman is cancelled and how he reacted to being stereotyped. At the end of the bio is an episodic guide for the three seasons of the series with comments by the author.
Captivating and Touching.......2005-06-16
If you follow my reviews, you know that I like Batman on a whole which probably makes me biased. Now to be sure, this book is probably not for you if you aren't a fan of the old 60s series. Well, that said, the book is absolutely phenomenal. I apologize for the cliche, but I 'just couldn't put it down.' The book is nicely divided into several chapters, and Adam talks about the different aspects of his life. A little bit on his childhood, some of his work before Batman, a moment in his life that foreshadowed his role as Batman, and elements of his domestic life. One thing you will notice in this book is that West is NOT uptight and stiff like his most famous character. He writes very flowingly and at times he touches us closely with his experiences. Some things have a comical aspect. (Like how the mask compromised his vision, so he had to get familiar with the set to avoid tripping.) He also explains that to do a character convincingly, the actor has to understand and know who he is portraying; another amusing thing was he reveals that one of the reasons he often made exaggerated gestures was to compensate for the fact that for obvious reasons, facial expressions were not so much an option for him. He also gives a generous amount of time to the other cast members. (Another thing that shows Adam's abilites as a writer is that while he will admit that his favorite villains were Newmar as Catwoman and Gorshin as the Riddler, he explains why the Joker (Romero) and the Penguin (Meredith) held the most popular villain spots. The only guest star he really knocks is Otto Preminger as Mr. Freeze. He also talks a little about the equipment like the Batmobile. (It wasn't so easy to drive.) Another thing that shows his ability to write well is that while he liked Yvonne Craig as a person, he explains (without knocking her) that he was not overly delighted at the presence of her character. Some other significant chapters focus on his personal life. (How his domestic life was affected for the worse, how being famous came with some negative elements, and how he was affected when Batman was cancelled.) There is a deep sadness in how his life was brought to a sudden detour when this happened, and how he realized that being Batman gave him some years of fame but made it difficult to find work afterwards. To be sure, he did some work in movies and telvision, but nothing really gave him the popularity of the batdays. He later tells about an experience where he had to become Batman for real one day when on a vacation, someone attacked a girl with a machete. All in all, this is an absolute MUST for fans of the 60s Batman series. Perhaps one of the greatest chapters is where he explains why he was hurt at not being asked to do Batman in the Burton movies. (And it wasn't just jealousy.) He had some really understandable reasons for being angered and hurt. (I did notice one glitch. He said he voiced a 'villain' Grey Ghost in the animated series.) Well, the Grey Ghost was not a villain. He was the childhood hero of Kevin Conroy's Batman, and on top of that Adam West's Grey Ghost helped Kevin Conroy's Batman stop the villain in that episode. A final passage that ties the book together is that even though playing Batman came with a price, he accepted that everything comes with good and bad, and that when he thinks of the good, he didn't regret it at all. This is NOT AT ALL the work of someone looking for a few dollars. This is a book full of interesting experiences, and written with honest heart felt emotions. Sometimes they are comical, sad, or objective. Good luck trying to put this book down once you pick it up. If you enjoy this book, be sure to get the dvd "Return to the Batcave." Many of the events in this book will be seen in that recent movie.
A Slam Bang True Story.......2005-03-19
West shows us here how he became the comic book super hero for the ABC series which aired in 1966! Its all here the shows the casts and directors and each series plot. I think West was a great actor acting the part.
Batman: Revealed!.......2004-12-26
First, let me start off by saying that if you go to Mr. West's website, "www.adamwest.com"; you can get a personally autographed copy of his book. I think this is an absolutely great treasure to give to any "Batman" fan.
Second, my opinion of his tome. Simply stated, it's a fun ride back to your childhood. It gave me the scoop on everything and anything that was "bat-ified" because of that show. The only thing I wished was that there were more stories, even if little ones.
It was like a peek over the shoulder of one of my heroes from my youth. The difference now is that I can appreciate the reality of what went on outside the fantasy of Batman; what Mr. West sacrificed for the character. If you have the chance to see him in any other role, you would then understand "what could have been" in his career, though I think that he was born to be "The Caped Crusader".
What a look into the 60's and what was happening! Some of it delicious, and other parts, sobering. It seems that fame and fortune truly do have a price, but dealing with its effects is what made Mr. West a real man. He does this by being humble, quite honest, and quite funny, depending what part of his on-screen/off-screen life you're reading.
Some of his tales are pleasantly quirky, and others, detailed enough to feel like you were there; you remember an episode he speaks of, then you begin to think about what went on while he was filming it (the cast, the guests, etc.). Pure reading pleasure. Even the story surrounding the movie was wonderful.
I feel that he respected the reader enough, as well as himself, to describe the events of his life before, during, and after "Batman" by giving you insight that spins the yarn of all that was good and not-so-good, without having to give some of the harsh details. I make great mention of this because his co-star, Burt Ward, wrote his own version of life during "Batman" and if you have any morals or sense of respect for yourself or the show, DO NOT waste your time with his book. Mr. West was most gracious in his storytelling, and he deserves all your attention.
Get the book because "we haven't one moment to lose!".

A GREAT BOOK FOR FANS OF THE SHOW.......2002-05-13
THIS BOOK HAS A LOT OF INFO AND IS WELL WORTH READING. ADAM WEST TELLS SOME INTERESTING, UNIQUE AND HUMOROUS STORIES OF HIS LIFE, CAREER, AND TIME HE WAS ON THE SHOW. I FOUND HIS WRITING VERY WITTY, HUMOROUS AND WELL DONE. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. THE ONLY NEGATIVE I HAVE IS THAT I HOPED IT WAS LONGER AND MORE DETAILED. ALSO THE PHOTOS ARE GRAINY AND OUT OF FOCUS. BUT FOR A TRIVIA AND NOSTALGIC TV WATCHER THIS IS A GOOD BOOK TO HAVE.
VERY RECOMMENDED.
A WORTHY ATTEMPT FROM ADAM.......2001-12-13
Not the best celebrity book I've added to my collection, but not the worst. I'm giving it ***-plus because it appears to be an honest effort. I just wanted more meat and potatoes (read: interesting facts) about making the Batman series than the book offers. We hear about the other actors but it's mostly "Neil Hamilton (Comissioner Gordon) was very serious; Stafford Repp (Chief O'Hara) was a lot of fun..." I wanted some good solid stories about the production of this time capsule of a series, and while they might be dull and boring to Adam, they would have lent a lot of color to the book. I just ordered Burt Ward's book, which I already hear is a complete 180 from West's, and will have to compare the two. Make no mistake, I loved the series and was a Batman-aholic in the 1960s, like most of us, so I was really hoping for some golden chestnuts about Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, Burgess Meredith and Vincent Price. West does, however, let us know exactly how he feels about Julie Newmar (and who wouldn't share his admiration of such a 'Living Doll'? ... those of you from the 60s will understand that reference). So-so, but I will take the effort to read it again someday, if that's an endorsement.
POW !!! BAM !!! ZOW !!! with some reservations.......2001-06-08
Back to the Batcave is a definite "must read" for any fan of the classic 60's television series. This work details Adam West's early acting career as well as providing interesting anecdotes and behind the scene looks at what went on during the shooting of Batman. An added bonus is a 41 page annotated episode guide providing the Batfan with air dates, guest stars and plot synopsis'. Grainy photos, sloppy editing and a substandard print job kept this reader from assigning this book a 4 rating. In addition, some fans could probably do without reading the epilogue. West comes off as bitter (almost whining) about not being offered the lead in the 1989 Batman film. I, for one found it mildly embarrassing and depressing. It's my hope that should future editions be printed, this section will be rewritten.
wow what a book!.......2000-07-29
Adam "Batman" West knows how to write! great job!

Outstanding .Net Security Book.......2007-05-23
This book shows you how to secure your applications steps by steps. I took the advises and lock down my IIS, and reset my .net configuration file in my asp.net configuration file.
At the same, I am setting up my web servers to track and trace people in and out the servers within the oranganization -- since my applications are running inside intranet.
Great book to have if security is you main concern!
If you only get one book on .NET web security, get this one!.......2006-03-31
I'm a Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer with reasonable experience of .NET web development, but little or no understanding of how to secure the applications that I write. But not any more. This book is excellent! It covers securing .NET web applications under the 1.0 and especially the 1.1 .NET framework. It does NOT teach the basic .NET technologies, ie: how to create a web program, but it explains in good detail (without going overboard) how the security mechanisms of .NET work, and how best to secure a .NET web application. It's a big book, with chapters covering topics like code access security and how to configure a web app for medium trust, how to secure web services and Remoting servers, and how to harden IIS, Windows 2000 and SQL Server, and loads more!
Before you consider buying any other .NET security book, get this one. It's worth every penny. It also has a companion volume, entitled "Building Secure ASP.NET Applications. Authentication, Authorization, and Secure Communication". Unfortunately, this book is not half as good as "Improving Web Application Security". Shame really. The books are supposed to complement each other, but "Improving Web Application Security" really stands out head and shoulders above the other. It's a must buy if you want to understand .NET web application security and the security architecture that underpins it.
A great counter measure: Annonymization.......2006-01-03
A great counter measure to deter potential hackers, is to eliminate identifying server response data that is necessary to complete the request. You can do this by removing HTTP response data, modifying cookie values, and adjusting other response information. Any easy way to do this is with www.ServerMask.com for IIS 4, 5, & 6.
Great ideas for countermeasures, less demonstration.......2004-10-29
I am in the business of writing secure e-biz apps and I found the security and countermeasure strategies in this book to be very thorough.
Now, why the 4 stars? Two reasons - 1. The author(s) are very repetitive. I read the section on countermeasures to SQL injection attacks 3 times in the book.
2. The countermeasures are demonstrated adequately but the attacks are not. For instance, what to do to thwart SQL injection attacks is explained with some examples. But what really is a SQL injection attack; plain description is not enough? Some non-trivial examples of those make sense because then you know the reason for deploying the countermeasures; what are you saving yourself against? Sort of, identifying the enemy.
Nevertheless, a great, comprehensive and practical tutorial.
Just get it!There is nothing that compares to it........2004-03-09
If you are designing, building and deploying Web based applications using Microsoft's .NET Framework run and get this book. Currently, there is no other book that can match the breath and depth of the topic covered in this book.
Contrary to what the title may imply, in addition to ASP.NET this book also covers how security should be addressed in the building of Serviced components, Web Services and Remoting. The chapters on Code Access Security are among the clearest that can be found anywhere.
This book takes a holistic approach to Security in that it addresses threats to the network, host and application layers. The old adage of a chain is only as strong as its weakest link is taken to heart in the book so guidance is provided on how security should be addressed across tiers and at multiple layers. Secure app development across the entire software development and deployment lifecycle is considered within the scope of this book.
In addition to Secure Coding guidelines, Extensive guidelines are provided that show how the Network, Web Server, Application Server and Database Server should be secured.
One of the things that I like about this book is that the guidance that is provided is task and role based. So even though the book is 800+ pages, it can be very easily used as a ready reference.
Multiple checklists that deal with Design, Build, Securing and Assessment are given and can be used out of the box.
In short, don't wait. Go get it now!
From the book's introduction:
Part I, "Introduction to Threats and Countermeasures," identifies and illustrates the various threats facing the network, host, and application layers. The process of threat modeling helps you to identify those threats that can harm your application. By understanding these threats, you can identify and prioritize effective countermeasures.
Part II, "Designing Secure Web Applications," gives you the guidance you require to design secure Web applications. Even if you have deployed your application, we recommend that you examine and evaluate the concepts, principles, and techniques outlined in this part.
Part III, "Building Secure Web Applications," allows you to apply the secure design practices introduced in Part II to create secure implementations. You will learn defensive coding techniques that make your code and application resilient to attack.
Part IV, "Securing Your Network, Host, and Application," describes how you will apply security configuration settings to secure these three interrelated levels. Instead of applying security randomly, you will learn the rationale behind the security recommendations.
Part V, "Assessing Your Security," provides the tools you require to evaluate the success of your security efforts. Starting with the application, you'll take an inside-out approach to evaluating your code and design. You'll follow this with an outside-in view of the security risks that challenge your network, host and application.
