How to Survive an Inflationary Crisis in the Twenty-First Century.......2005-07-29
~The Hyperinflation Survival Guide~ offers strategies for business managers to keep their enterprise afloat in the midst of runaway inflation. I've spent a great deal of time studying Austrian and Chicago school economists, and would say that economist Gerald Swanson has really done his homework with The Hyperinflation Survival Guide. Within this succinct little book are a plethora of sensible business strategies for American businesses. If businesses are to survive they must effectively counter and minimize the ill effects of rampant inflation and/or hyperinflation. The utmost prudence is required in managing accounts receivable, inventory, and production at such a time. A sudden inflationary economic downturn may very well bring a business to its knees leading to insolvency. So it is vitally requisite to be prepared to operate prudently and insulate a business from the ill effects of runaway inflation. You have to know the rules of the game and be prepared, and the rules are stacked against unprepared business managers. Swanson offers financial management and marketing strategies, and offers concise explanations of the inflationary phenomenon.
Today in the United States, there are a lot of dire economic indicators illustrative of a moribund dollar, which is precariously staged for a collapse. First, the U.S. government has spiraling half-trillion dollar budget deficits which are not projected to disappear, colossal government spending increases, and an exorbitant national debt. More and more federal tax expenditures are simply spent paying interest on the debt rather than provision of actual government services and subsidies. Secondly, the U.S. Dollar is unique in that more dollars in existence are in circulation outside of the United States than within it. Many countries use the dollar as a reserve currency or to settle their current account balances in foreign exchanges. An estimated sixty-five percent of U.S. dollars in existence circulate abroad, so in the midst of a dollar decline, a tidal wave of these dollars from overseas coming home could plunge our economy into hyperinflation. If the dollar declines rapidly, it should be taken for granted that foreign dollar-holders will unload their dollars. Thirdly, the amount of debt-public and private is astronomical-and a soft depression seems almost inevitable. The housing market is already undergoing steady inflation because the Fed has keeps interest rates precariously low. The demise of the dollar could very well become a reality-though it is not a certainty. Presently, the dollar has already suffered a devaluation vis-à-vis the Euro and the British Pound Sterling. If the United States does not experience hyperinflation it seems that we may very well revisit the stagflation phenomenon of the 1970s-with its characteristic high inflation coupled with economic stagnation, unemployment, or economic recession. The Federal Reserve has kept artificially-low interest rates far lower than the market would for many years-and it has set the stage for the on-going housing market inflation and an inevitable market correction with a future bust and collapse in the housing market. Many people will lose their homes, be forced to sell them or experience a crippling financial pinch with their lofty mortgages far exceeds their real estate value. Irresponsible inflationary monetary policy will led to a massive redistribution of real wealth and economic dislocations. While a hyperinflation crisis is not inevitable, every indicator points the way to a soft depression.
Thomas Jefferson once remarked, "The trifling economy of paper, as a cheaper medium, or its convenience for transmission, weighs nothing in opposition to the advantages of the precious metals... it is liable to be abused, has been, is, and forever will be abused, in every country in which it is permitted." This is as true in the eighteenth-century as in the twenty-first century. Nonetheless, the mentality of American exceptionalism compels many Americans to have the "it will never happen here" mentality as if we're exempt from fundamental economic laws. Our Treasury officials and central bankers that craft monetary policy suffer from this mentality as well. So, while the idea of Banana Republic-style inflation seems wholly untenable to our political leadership and populace, we should never rule it out. One South American bank director remarked, "I wonder how the United States holds together. Your investments in productive assets are down, growth in non-productive sectors is up, and you purchase more than you produce." Many economic indicators show that the U.S. Dollar is precariously staged for continual devaluation, and if it were to crescendo to the point where the government expands the monetary supply to pay its obligations than hyperinflation could result. A younger more sober-minded Alan Greenspan adequately surmised: "As the supply of money (of claims) increases relative to the supply of tangible assets in the economy, prices must eventually rise. Thus the earnings saved by the productive members of the society lose value in terms of goods. When the economy's books are finally balanced, one finds that this loss in value represents the goods purchased by the government for welfare or other purposes with the money proceeds of the government bonds financed by bank credit expansion." This sound economic logic has not changed, it's just the House Banking committee member Rep. Ron Paul emphasizes the logic now instead of the present-day Fed Chief who sold out for power. Greenspan further noted, "In the absence of the gold standard, there is no way to protect savings from confiscation through inflation... ¶...Deficit spending is simply a scheme for the confiscation of wealth. Gold stands in the way of this insidious process. It stands as a protector of property rights."
All things considered, Swanson has put together a helpful and astute little tract for business managers. While I won't summarize the strategies in detail, Swanson covers financial management, manufacturing decisions for producers and industrial relations with amazing clarity. Prudent business leaders should be prepared for economic calamity including the unthinkable hyperinflation phenomenon. Business leaders caught in the "it can't happen here" mindset could be in for a rude awakening. If in the midst of a hyperinflation crisis, a business leader would be sorely mistaken if they are to look to the government for a solution amenable to them. As Swanson surmises, "The name of the game in terms of planning during periods of high inflation, is guessing what ways the government is going to try and correct their bad choices." If you're an entrepreneur, business executive, economist or otherwise concenred citizen, you should consider reading Dr. Gerald Swanson's book and take the prudent and cautious approach... you won't regret it.

Book Description
Economic policy interventions of a scale as effected in Eastern Germany can be expected to have a significant impact on the economy. The question whether investment subsidization as a core policy instrument is a suitable measure to initiate a self-sustaining upswing in the Eastern German economy and an improvement of living standards has been reason for dispute since the beginning of transition. Using econometric techniques, the study analyzes the effects of investment subsidies on economic structure, employment and productivity in the Eastern German industry. The study suggests that there is a need for redesigning subsidization and changing infrastructure and labor market policies.

This detailed economic history of Mexico presents a theory about how rent seeking permits economic growth and explains why political instability is not necessarily correlated with economic stagnation. It is intended for historians of Latin America, scholars interested in economic development, and political scientists interested in the political foundations of growth. Hb ISBN (2003): 0-521-82067-7

Instability not per se equal to economic disaster.......2005-03-07
Haber et al ask whether the truism that political instability means declining economic growth because of weak property rights holds true from the porfiriato to post-revolutionary Mexico (1876-1929). The answer, surprisingly, is not necessarily(!).
Unstable governments have an incentive to create and enforce limited property rights, so as to have access to rents by which they can maintain their power. However, if the government goes too far and tries to create a form of limited government, it weakens itself such that less scrupulous usurping governments can enter the bargain and co-opt those rent-producing assets for their own purposes, usually to the detriment of the current administration.
Nevertheless, the mexican state during this period in question was able to benefit from these limited property rights, enforced by a variety of third-parties, to maintain economic growth throughout this chaotic period, with the slight exception of the years 1913-1917. However, the authors point out that the potentially major cause for the economic contraction during these years was primarily a result of the destruction of the railroad/transport system, which limited the property holder's ability to get their goods to the international and domestic markets. Political violence per se was not the primary cause of economic contraction.
This book is an outstanding analysis of real empirical evidence which turns the simple theory of instability=contraction on its head.
The deeper import herein is also that limited governments cannot provide an immediate exit from political instability. Machiavelli jumps out from behind the curtains wearing a sombrero! The current simplistic argument of many would-be politicos, that all developing nations need only create a limited government like the US to cure their economic ailments, is shown to be a straw man in this book.
This book is perfect for those that want to understand how developing countries must deal with instability in order to grow into more limited forms of government.
It also is an excellent analysis, based on hard research, of how property rights are formed even in the midst of political instability. Highly recommended.

From the supplier: Derivatives are one of the least understood financial instrument today. The term covers a majority of the financial innovations made in the 1980s and 1990s as an outgrowth of commodities future trading. While the latter involves speculating on future prices of goods, derivatives are tools used in trading financial futures in terms of stocks, interest rates, foreign exchange rates and stock indices. While its complex nature and the lack of regulatory control give rise to opportunities for abuse, derivatives also provide several financial advantages for both investors and firms.

Description:
In this paper, we investigate the impact of government's stabilization policy on the dynamic behavior of the economic system in an analytical framework of a Keynes-Goodwin model of the growth cycle. In particular, we study the effects of the policy lag on macroeconomic stability analytically and numerically. It is shown that the increase of the policy lag contributes to destabilize the system, and cyclical behavior and chaotic motion emerge in some ranges of the parameter values.
Book Description
Dynamic Macroeconomics is an attempt to revitalize the traditions of nonmarket clearing approaches to macroeconomics. Using sophisticated tools from dynamic analysis, the authors introduce a consistent, integrated framework for disequilibrium macroeconomic dynamics and explore its relationship to the competing--and currently dominant--equilibrium dynamics.
The book is organized into five parts. Part I covers background models of market-clearing and nonmarket-clearing approaches. Part II introduces short-run monetary models of macroeconomic fluctuations that build on the dynamic interaction of product, labor, and financial markets. Part III explores monetary instability in variants with capital accumulation and growth. Part IV explores supply and demand side Keynesian business cycles and monetary-type growth models. Part V considers the role of the financial sector as a source of instability and fluctuations.

I found this to be an excellant book for more advanced students (I encouraged mine to read it this past semester). The author gives a splendid explanation of the fundamental economic issues concerning monetary policy and the problems and challenges that plague a dynamic economy.

Book Description
In this pioneering volume, Dipak Gupta takes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the causes of political violence and the effects of political instability. The first work to expand the scope of traditional economic growth models to include political instability, The Economics of Political Violence examines the motivations an individual might have for participating in an act of political violence. Establishing the conceptual linkages between micro-level, individual-based theory and aggregate structural theories of political violence and revolution, Gupta also constructs a composite measure of political instability. He then develops an integrated model of economic growth that incorporates political instability as an endogenous variable. Students and scholars in both political science and economics will find this book enlightening reading. Gupta begins by examining both the contributions various social science disciplines have made to the study of political violence and the theories of collective behavior that have guided many previous studies. Turning to a focus on the individual, Gupta analyzes the behavioral foundations of rebellion and explores the influences of the environment on individual political action. The next four chapters address political instability from a variety of perspectives. Gupta describes the relationship between political instability and the economy, offers an empirical definition of political instability, discusses structural explanations of political instability, and looks at the effects of political instability on economic growth. In his concluding chapter, Gupta makes policy recommendations based on the foregoing analysis. An appendix presents the index for political instability developed by the author.

Not very good..........2003-02-11
I am a fan of Martin Popoff, and I was expecting great things from this book, but it is unable to deliver, unfortunately. The book names the most influential metal acts of the 70s, 80s, and 90s, summing up their careers in two or three pages. Sounds great, but the whole system just proves to be extremely boring, and the book is not designed to be a straight through read as I thought it would be (this was acceptable, obviously, with another Popoff book 'The Collector's Guide to Heavy Metal'). The book overall leaves me feeling unsatisfied, exactly the opposite reaction I thought it would give. I must also mention that the book leaves out Husker Du, who I feel several of the grunge bands (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) are heavily indebted to.
book of lies.......2002-04-03
They just forgot some bands like Alice cooper, and MEGADETH !!!!!
Commercial Heavy metal only (music from supermarket)
excellent, highly useful hodgepodge of heavy metal info.......2001-12-18
Martin Popoff established himself as a writer of acerbic wit and tremendous knowledge with his collector's guide to heavy metal. That book and its three-thousand-plus reviews is a mammoth testament to his energy as well as the genre's amazing invention and staying power.
For this outing, Popoff gives what I see as a survey course in Heavy Metal History, utilizing the more "objective" standpoint of artistic and historical influence in metal to discuss the music rather than the slightly shakier ground of a subjective album review.
Popoff divides the music into the decades of the 1970's, 80's, and 90's, and from there ranks (okay, so we still have a tiny bit of subjectivity) the bands and/or artists in terms of their importance and influence on metal as a whole. The result are 50 bands that Popoff sees as essential to the progression of metal. This is terribly intriguing as it introduces bands like Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, and even The New York Dolls into the list alongside undoubted legends like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Along the way there are pleasant surprises like seeing Yngwie Malmsteem make the list as well as UFO, Bathory, and Alice In Chains. In an effort at being completist, Popoff nobly lists in a series of appendices bands too strange or unique to make the list, bands that almost made it, and his short list of the most influential metal records.
The drawbacks? Well for one the written pieces on each band are limited to around 2 pages each, so there is nothing deep or exploratory. There is also the issue of Popoff's biases, which show themselves rarely but sometimes humorously. Having said that, there is also much to like about this volume. It is a short, readable, entertaining ride through metal's high points as seen through biographies and key works of each artist. Where possible Popoff has included either in textboxes or sidebars snippets of interviews with the bands themselves. It also (like Popoff's collector's guide) demonstrates a keen sense of the history of the genre. The bottom line folks is that someone has to be setting this stuff down for posterity, and no matter whether you agree or disagree with Popoff's opinions he is plainly a huge fan of the music too!
This is a book that will spark debate and discussion to be sure, and it is overall quite worth a read by those wishing to acquire a sense of the history behind the power chords as well as those who want to revisit classic metal vibes. Rock on...
Excellent, Perhaps Short Overview.......2001-07-21
I'm not a big fan of Popoff's writing style, but he does have a good ear for the metal scene. I found myself agreeing with a lot of what he wrote. Also, when he breaks down the bands by decade, it's pretty obvious that the metal world is in decline when Pantera is considered the most influential band of the 90's (although I dig their stuff).

The Progressive Library Grows.......2001-04-14
As I fan of progressive rock I am always interested in any coverage of this often ignored genre. This is the fourth book devoted to progressive rock that I has purchased. The first three being "Rocking The Classics" by Edward Macan, "The Progressive Rock Files" by Jerry Lucky and "The Billboard Guide To Progressive Music" by Bradley Smith. I would highly recommend these books along with Jerry Lucky's "20th Century Rock and Roll - Progressive Rock". The latter will make a great addition to my slowly growing library of progressive rock books. Over the last few years I have refered to the first three books countless times and I am sure that I will continue to do so in the future. Lucky's "20th Century" is far from a complete book (it is only 151 pages), however it will compliment my collection nicely. The book provides a broad overview of what Lucky feels are the fifty most influential bands in the genre. If you agree or disagree with who was included and who was left out should not take away from the enjoyment of this book. I am familiar with the majority of the bands listed, bands like Genesis, Dream Theater, Marillion, IQ, Camel, King Crimson, Kansas, Styx, Cast, etc. However I am not familiar with bands like Omega, Tangerine Dream, The Enid, Gryphon, Echolyn, The Flower Kings, Eloy, etc., so it is nice to be able to read an overview about them. It is also interesting to hear someone elses take on some my favorite bands. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about this genre, or anyone looking to find out about progressive bands that they may not be familiar with. Even if you a familiar with most of the bands included adding this book to your collection would not hurt.
Why Is There No Progressive Roll?.......2001-03-11
Although his designation of this book as "the worst product" he has ever purchased in relation to progressive rock seems excessive (it's surely better than most posters), the previous reviewer (see below) is largely correct, more's the pity. Mr Lucky's book is of the recent genre I like to describe as My Record Collection books. The author of such a book selects a title vague enough to justify inclusion of whatever happens to be sitting on the CD shelves (or gathering dust in the cellar), reads the liner notes and/or listens to them again, and writes up the resulting insights. "50 Underrated Jazz Records of the 1960s," "Truly Weird Music," "Out There: Experiments in Rock," etc. -- that sort of title. These are usually in the form of lists with commentary lengthy or brief -- because these are easy to write -- and easy to read (always a consideration in contemporary publishing; and as for rock fans who move their lips when reading traffic signs...no, I needn't be nasty here.) Chronological ordering is always a possibility, although research may take a few hours longer. Random ordering is the easiest but may require an explanation ("I have attempted to discuss these discs in an ahistorical yet subtextual manner whose underlying rationale will emerge as we proceed...") Alphabetical ordering is chosen here, which is convenient, sort of, depending. The book in question is rather unbalanced in its choices, with the criteria of inclusion unclear (but this is a MRC book, remember.) The famous mingle with the obscure, the hugely talented rub elbows with the mediocre, landmark recordings are there right along with the full fathom five variety, and some of the bands are only borderline progressive (although this might broaden the appeal of the book to those who accept the received wisdom the progressive rock is "stupid" or "pretentious;" some is and some ain't.) There's nothing wrong with the foregoing if the book attempts in some way to be definitive, or even a decent guide for the novice. This book attempts neither. Mr Lucky's pre-emptive remarks that he does not intend to be critical, which he somehow equates with "nit-picking" (does he mean "detail"?), although his very choice of artists to include must imply some implicit critical framework. He also in his introduction to this book recirculates the old saw that one has no right to criticize what one can't do oneself. For myself, that would mean I have no right to criticize restaurant food, mechanical work on my car, the telephone book, etc. It's not a question of having a "right," but of what one wants to do, and a critical frame of reference is not inconsistent with disinterested observation. Well, I think that's enough, or more than enough. Mr Lucky's heart is in the right place, and progressive fans need all of the allies (and propagandists) that they can get. Mr Lucky recommends in his letter to Amazon re The Progressive Rock Files several books which are better (although all have their problems.) Novices (and others) might wish to take a peek at magazines such as Audion or Expose or Progression. Or they might wish to buy the greatest recording ever made (yes, I'm exaggerrating), Robert Wyatt's "Rock Bottom" (1975), available at better websites everywhere.
A Waste.......2001-02-09
I bought this book hoping that Lucky's book has good overview and comprehensive review about progressive rock. This book contains 50 bands which were considered the best or at least the bands that gave influence to other bands in the progressive rock history. Each band has pictures, short biography and a list of discography. I can tell you guys and gals that those information can be found in those bands' websites. Lucky did nothing new, no further observation, no reviews, not even a subjective opinion about those bands. There is no need for us to buy a book, when the information is EXACTLY what can be found on the internet. From all progressive rock-related merchandises (books, CDs, vinyls, tapes, videos, DVD/LD, posters, etc), this is the worst product I ever have.
A Good Overview of Progressive Rock.......2000-11-25
This book profiles what Mr. Lucky considers to be the 50 most influential and important progressive rock bands. He includes the superstars (e.g., ELP, Jethro Tull, Yes), the obscure (e.g., Omega, Ange), and the modern (e.g., IQ, Cast, Anglagard). I am glad to see Mr. Lucky include some bands from the 1980's and 1990's, as many fans of progressive rock seem to think the genre effectively ended in 1975. It is also nice to read something positive about progressive rock for a change. There are photos of almost all the bands, including 13 color photographs. If you like progressive rock (I know there are at least a few of you out there), you should buy this book. In addition, you may be interested in another book by Jerry Lucky, "The Progressive Rock Files," which is available from Amazon.

Who was this written for?.......2006-10-10
I read this book during the break in seasons 2 and 3. Besides the thorough section devoted to the producer's influences--the parallels to "The Stand" and "The X-Files" are interesting--it was a waste of time. It left me wondering what audience they were targeting with this book--huge Lost fans who are involved in the intertextuality of the show know all of this already, and casual fans won't be bothered by buying books. I also noticed that there is no speculation whatsoever in the book, and that it sticks to the basic facts that we all know already. Plus, it was written before the last episodes of season 2, which are critical to "unlocking" any meaning behind the show.
Don't buy it.
not helpful.......2006-08-24
What a horrible horrible book. This is not for Lost fans. This is for someone who's never seen Lost. It does not unlock or analyze anything. It pretty much reviews what has already happened. What a waste of money and time.

Just watching the episodes of LOST on the TV, it's sometimes difficult to understand just what's going on, but after reading this book, and being able to read about LOST in black and white, alot of things are much more clearer to me now, and have helped me understand things I didn't understand before. I enjoyed reading it and would reccomend it.
very upset.......2006-06-12
I purchased this book hoping that it would clear up my confusion about LOST - but quite the opposite. This book is so poorly organized, I may as well be using it as a driving map for Italy. Purchase the other Ultimate Unofficial Guide to LOST, this one sucks.
Book Description
What? You computer crashed again. You were told the cost of repairs to restore it will be $250. Yikes. You know you don't have that kind of money. So what do you do?
Repair it yourself. But how? I don't know anything about computers. Well now you can. Why spend months in a classroom to learn computers when you can learn all about them in the comfort of your own home.
This book does what no other book on the market has done. It teaches you about every part of a computer, how it works, how to diagnose and repair it when it doesn't, and how to install it. Plus, here is an added incentive. While you are reading this book, you are also studying for the A+ certification exam, at the same time.
Each chapter has self-evaluation and sample A+ test questions for you to go over and review. Also, each chapter, except the first and last, have assignments you can perform to reinforce your training.
The book is designed so you can take one chapter a week. This way by the time 15 weeks rolls around, you will be ready to take the A+ exam. If you look at the back of the book, I also include well over 100 practice A+ test questions to help you. Chapter 15 also provides you with a link and information as to how to register for the test.
Why spend large amounts of money taking classes, having to commute to schools, or even spend money on repairs. Do it yourself and save. I will even be glad to provide support if necessary. All you have to do is send me email and I will respond.
Customer Reviews:
This book wasted my time........2005-04-20
I found this book from an online course for getting the A+ certification. As I studied it I found inaccuracies. Some of the practice tests even have wrong answers when aligned with actual study text. The book rambles on and on about history and theory but gives little information needed to pass the A+ exams. I enjoyed the computer facts but I spent my money to learn the technical aspects of computers and prepare for the A+ exams. This was a major waste of my time that I needed to spend on getting my A+ certification.
