Just The Basics.......2007-05-12
I thought this book was going to have more in-depth projects for laptop users but I was a bit disappointed. This book just has some basic things you can do with your laptop. I found no surprises here and gained no further knowledge of things I can do with my laptop. For a beginner, this book may be just what you need but if you have even basic computer skills, you won't find much if anything new to do with your laptop. I already knew all 24 of the cool things this book said I didn't know I could do!
Book Description
Whether you're frustrated with current PC offerings (and their inflated prices) or are simply looking for a cool project to take on, building a computer from the ground up using off-the-shelf parts can offer significant advantages. In these pages, computer dudes
Darrel Wayne Creacy and
Carlito Vicencio outline those advantages and then show you how to build the computer of your dreams.
The pair begins by explaining what components make up a PC and what you need to think about when selecting those components, before helping you determine your needs and suggesting various configurations to fit those uses. Breaking the process down into its simplest terms, the authors provide component lists for a number of different PC setups: for students, home users, multimedia/home-theater enthusiasts, high-end graphic/video/audio producers, and more.
Using plain language and plenty of visual and instructional aids--photos, illustrations, diagrams, step-by-step directions, and more--the authors ensure that even someone (like you!) who knows nothing about technology can build the perfect PC!
On a more personal note, the authors are donating a percentage of their income from this book to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation–to thank all the women in their lives who have supported them and battled the disease. For more information about BCRF, please visit http://www.bcrfcure.org/.

Out-of-date, thin, and misleading.......2007-07-15
Out-of-date: Several recommendations here are way too conservative for 2007.
Thin: There really isn't very much information in this book. After ten pages of a pep talk about how much money you can save--which is misleading because what you really get is more quality for the same price--the book gives a nice breakdown of major components of a computer in 30 pages. The five-page "What kind of user are you?" is helpful, too. But that's really it! The rest of the book makes recommendations about what kind of hardware to buy for the type of computer user you are. It covers 46 pages. After that are two chapters of how to build two of the computers. In following the directions for "The Gamer" I found three contradictions from the description of the system to what the instructions told you to do. (And burying the instructions for the floppy drive installation in the Optical Drives section was really exasperating.)
Misleading: These guys sell computer building kits. They want to whet your appetite and sell you one of their kits. So rather than discuss general buying decisions for all computer buyers, they offer up five computers to build with parts lists (which as mentioned are out of date). That's it.
All of that said, this book gave me the kick in the pants to actually do it, but I could have gotten that from their web site for free. The motherboard manual (XFX) and the case manual (Antec) were way more instructional than this book.
content.......2007-02-13
This book is better than the title implies. It covers a spread of computer models for an individual to select from and build and gives recommendations for components that are needed to complete the build. More sources of supply for components would have been helpful.
Dude you really can do it! It works!!!!.......2006-11-01
My husband and I were new to the building your own pc thing. So going through tons of useless books we finally found one that appealed to us both. A sense of humor. We got in contact with Darrel and started the uncharted process. He was great. Even when we called about not knowing how to plug up the power cord. We are proud to say that our baby project is still going strong and improving with every stroke of the mouse. I think Darrel has created two computer building monsters. Thanks Darrel for showing that we really can do it!!!!! Sincerely Marvin & Crystal (IL)
Good book, dudes not home.......2006-08-23
This is a good book, the descriptions and illustrations are first rate, it gave me enough information to build my own pc. On the downside, I emailed the dudes with a few questions and got no response whatsoever.
It's good, but leaves a little to the imagination.......2006-05-03
Photographs and instructions are very clear. The authors use a very logical, step-by-step process to build a computer the way they want. If you want to try some things that will customize the machine this may not be the book you want.
For example, the authors prefer to buy a case with fans and power supply installed. If you want to buy the items separately, they don't discuss the installation of these items.
They allow you to build a very stable and quality machine, which is what all user's want. This is a very good resource for the first timer if you follow their recommedations and don't venture out on your own too much.

The title says it all!.......2001-08-22
Although DOS is relatively easy to learn. Remembering everything is not always possible. This book will answer any questions you have about DOS, and more. I found it comes in handy as a reference when writing login scripts for our end users.

best intro to PC hardware I've seen.......2002-10-21
Great explanations and diagrams packed into a relatively short book. I was able to read most of this in a couple evenings, yet I felt I learned quite a bit, for example the difference between a controller and adapter and why the IDE hard drive standard was considered an advance over ESDI and ST506. A relief from the plethora of 1500 pg "upgrade" books on the market, with their scholarly compendia of Intel chip specs and pinouts, and the superficial beginners books that are so broad-brush that you wonder if you've learned anything.
One drawback is that the book is a few years old. Almost all the material is still useful, but some recent topics (Pentium III/IV, wireless, Windows 2K/XP, USB 2.0) aren't covered.
A Great Reference resource.......2000-04-10

Customer Reviews:
Cool, Challanging Jazz........2007-08-11
This is one cool book. I find a lot of the material challanging, but it is well worth the effort. I bought this book not just to learn Jazz, but to increase my skills in general on the fretboard. It covers every aspect of guitar (but in a Jazz sense), lead, rhythm and chord scale relationships. I've already found a lot of these skills are transferable to rock and blues, and in fact seems to make it easier because I find Jazz a lot more difficult than these two genres of music. This book is a natural and very interestng progression from the previous book, Jazz Guitar- Swing to Bepop.
Poorly conceived..useless in most parts.. .......2007-04-13
I had high hopes for this book when I first ordered it.. And the first time I opened its cover, I was impressed in the amount of material it included..Back then, I thought this was what mattered when it came to instructional material..It took me a few years to realize how wrong I was, and this was only possible becasue I finally started finding the right material to study on..Only then did I understand how badly conceived and useless this book was, at least for me.
First of all, I now know that any guitar book which focuses on scales essentially (and hopes you will figure out the rest regarding the art of creating jazz lines) is practically useless when it comes to bebop. This book has no chapter devoted to use of chromatic passing tones, guide tones and targetting essential notes. I am not saying that scales (and their theory) are not necessary, but they are simply not enough on their own in bebop..This book has entire chapters devoted to single scales, but the essentials I have mentioned have been left out..(And oddly enough, these essentials are not included in Munro's first book's contents as well..)
The author presents the intervallic structure of the scale introduced in the beginning of each chapter and gives you some examples of the chords that can be derived from these scales. After that, he shows some licks with that scale.. TAB is included, but no fretboard diagrams for scale shapes, because it seems the author does not believe in the shape (or visual) based nature of guitar when it comes to practicing scales. This is a huge mistake in my opinion (check out Jimmy Bruno's instructional videos and you will see how even a virtuoso like Bruno makes extensive use of the scale shapes on the fretboard) and the material presented in the book becomes extremely difficult to absorb. The author also presents the relevant arpeggio structures for each scale, but again there are no fretboard diagrams.. Oh well..
The only reason I gave this book 2 stars instead of 1 star is because there is some good information here (especially with regard to some modes of the melodic and harmonic minor scales) and obvously a great deal of effort went into the preparation of the book.. However, to me, this book can perhaps serve as some sort of reference source on certain scales, but not as a major source for basing your jazz guitar studies on. The chapter on Augmented scale is a good one, (but I have seen better ones). The licks presented do not include detailed analysis in general, and if you are the type of person who prefers to understand rather than memorise, then you will probably not like this book either..
In case you wonder what I kind of books I like and benefit from, you can chek out my (and other people's) reviews on some books by Sid Jacobs and Don Mock.
Best Jazz Guitar Method I've Found.......2006-09-28
This is a must-have book for the aspiring contemporary jazz guitarist. Doug Munro has put a method together that opens up the door to understanding complex jazz concepts. In this book he has covered a lot of advanced jazz guitar concepts that will have you sounding really hip and modern - not old-fashioned. Each chapter concentrates on a scale and the associated chords and arpeggios, and he then shows them in action with great example solos incorporating what you've just learned. The recordings on the cd are great and I enjoy listening to it on its own. This book really helped open the door to jazz for me.
Some things to be aware of: the concepts in this book are fairly advanced. Make sure you know the major scale modes well before tackling this book. If you don't, get the first book in this series "Swing to Bebop". It is covers the major scale modes brilliantly.
I struggled with the book to start with but that was my fault because I thought I knew more than I actually did. Once I went back and learnt the major scale modes properly the book made a whole lot more sense.
All the examples are in tab with great fingering patterns.
This book is worth every cent.

Saturday Night Live - the official book of the show's twentieth anniversary, to be celebrated in September 1995 in an hour-long prime-time Sunday special - is a jam-packed, heavily illustrated look at the first twenty years of the show through the voices and memories of all those who made it happen. The book is a lively romp through time, recalling breakthrough comedy moments and characters etched in our national memory. The breeding ground and showcase of much of the best comedic talent of our time, from Gilda Radner to Eddie Murphy, from Dana Carvey and Mike Myers, SNL remains the most highly rated and influential late-night show, reaching eleven million viewers in the United States and twenty million viewers worldwide each week. Various cast members, feature players, writers, and hosts recall their favorite sketches, moments, and characters. Summaries of every sketch from "Killer Bees" to "Coffee Talk," interviews with the creators, and a treasure of trivia in a special "SNL by the

the scrapbook you wish you were in.......2006-05-05
I have only lived in the US since 2001, and SNL rapidly became my favourite show. Hence I bought this book to have a peek behind the scenes of the Manhattan studio where it all takes place, and I was not disappointed. Some of the people in it I didn't recognise as they were before my time, but I recognised many faces. Even if I hadn't, it is great to see all the backstage shots. Particularly memorable are photos of a writer hunched over a laptop, with Norm McDonald smiling over his shoulder, and Chris Farley sitting at the head of the table in a crowded writers room. There are also lots of other great shots of people building sets, working on costumes, doing all the pre-show stills for the commercial break etc - all of this exactly what I was interested in.
What jumps off the page for me is the camraderie that obviously exists between everyone on the show - obviously there are rivalries and creative tensions, but you can tell there is a group mentality that connects everyone in the photos. There are some treasured memories in here for the lucky few that were there at the time.
This is the next best thing to actually being involved with the show yourself, and as such, I recommend it wholeheartedly. A flood of images! Lovely stuff to have on your coffee table or beside your bed.
A grand history of late night television.......2004-05-12
I'm sorry to say that this book was published a year too early. It went to press after the 1993-94 season which was SNL's 19th. Were the authors and publishers so anxious to get it out? I guess they were. Anyway, this book tells about the amazing history of Saturday Night Live. Every overall cast member, director, writer, producer and everyone else involved. We'll never forget October 11,1975,the day of its premiere. The premiere episode began with the late John Belushi and the late writer Michael O'Donoughue in a sketch called "The Wolverines". O'Donoughue played a psychiatrist and Belushi was the patient. At the end of that sketch and before the pre-taped opening montage played,Chevy Chase came out yelling "LIVE FROM NEW YORK,IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT!",which is said at the beginning of every show, even to this day. Chase didn't stay very long on the show. Before the end of 1976,Chase,the first Weekend Update anchorman, went to Hollywood. Jane Curtin, another original cast member succeeded Chase on Weekend Update. Shortly after Chase's departure,in came Bill Murray from Chicago. After 1978-79,Belushi and Dan Aykroyd left SNL to go Hollywood and concentrate on their Blues Brothers act, initiated on SNL. They filmed THE BLUES BROTHERS in '79,a year after Belushi's first starring film ANIMAL HOUSE. In 1979-80,Harry Shearer joined remaining original members Curtin,Garrett Morris,Laraine Newman and Gilda Radner. After that season, all five were gone. The 1980-81 season began unusually late due to the actors' strike and Presidential debate between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan(the SNL studio was used for the debate). That season brought an entirely new cast, one of them being Joe Piscopo who stayed thru 1983-84. Eddie Murphy, then age 19,joined the show and departed with Piscopo. Another member was Gilbert Gottfried who was then not-so-famous. Jean Doumanian succeeded original producer Lorne Michaels, who had left with the remainder of the original cast. Gottfried was let go after 1980-81. In 1981-82,Piscopo and Murphy had new castmates, some of them Canadians. Robin Duke and Tim Kazurinsky are Canadian like original member Dan Aykroyd. Later(1984-85) came Billy Crystal who almost became an original member, and James Belushi,John's brother. Also joining in 1984-85 was Martin Short, who'd go Hollywood himself later. The following season, things finally settled down in studio 8H. Lorne Michaels returned, triumphantly(Doumanian was fired after 1980-81 and succeeded by Dick Ebersol) to serve as producer like he did for SNL's first 5 seasons. The new cast members were Nora Dunn,Dana Carvey,Kevin Nealon,Victoria Jackson and Dennis Miller who'd become the next Weekend Update anchorman. Mike Myers joined in 1989. Myers and Carvey became Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar, two hard-rocking and babe-loving buddies on the sketch Wayne's World, later inspiring two films. Chris Farley and David Spade later came and also went Hollywood. Another big SNL star is Adam Sandler, another film star. Sandler previously worked for NBC,guest-starring on a few episodes of The Cosby Show. Every show had a guest host and musical guest(some shows had more than one of each). We will never forget the Coneheads,Emily Litella, the Festrunk Brothers,Ed Grimley and Wayne's World(sorry if I forgot anything). We also won't forget John Belushi, who died in 1982 of a drug overdose and Gilda Radner who died at 42 of ovarian cancer. Farley fatally overdosed on drugs in 1997. O'Donoughue succumbed to lung cancer in '94. Oh, by the way,Bill's brother Brian Doyle Murray was an SNL member from 1981 to '84. This book should have been updated in 2000 for the show's 25th anniversary. After nearly 29 years on the air,Saturday Night Live continues to pull in tens of viewers from 11:30 PM to 1 AM,EST.
A COLLECTIBLE FOR SNL FANS.......2004-04-11
Since its television debut in 1995 few will argue the fact that Saturday Night Live was a cultural, comedic, and TV phenomenon.
Here in one volume is a collection of the sketches, characters, performers and phrases that first appeared on the show that kept many of us up late.
It's also a visual reminder of some of the great comedians who were first showcased there and the once shocking catch phrases that became a part of our collective vocabulary.
Be "SNL smart" with this book........1999-07-24
This book is an awesome book! you can learn about every castmember in the show up until 94'. You can learn about all the hosts, all the years, all the musical guests, all the backstage info, all the famous songs(including Adam Sandler's Songs), and much much more. Not only will it let you know your facts, but you will enjoy it! Trust me, buy it!!!!!!
A Great Book.......1999-07-13
A great book, really good if you only started watching SNL in the last few yaers and would like to know about the earlier years.

Sometimes all one needs to finally "get" a concept is to hear it reworded in a friendly, less technical way. Top Web designer Slocombe (urban75.org) demystifies the entire Web site production process with a fun, slang-filled text in Max Hits: Building and Promoting Successful Websites. He makes ideas that novices often find confusing, like XML, SVG, and CSS, seem easy and points the way to further reading and useful applications. Not strictly a how-to manual, the book is rich with screen shots and bite-size blocks of text, with a hip layout by Bark Design that makes it more entertaining than most technical books.
Slocombe dispenses a lot of hard-earned wisdom. Rather than teaching all of HTML, he gives a simple tutorial that gets across the main idea of how tags work and then sends the reader off to look at source code, consult online resources, and/or use an HTML editor like Homesite. When discussing how wide a site should be, he gets right to the crux of the problem: should a Web designer worry about how the site looks on every monitor from plasma to PDA? What are the pros and cons of specifying the table tag width at 100 percent? Again, he points the way to places online where readers can check how their site displays in different browsers and resolutions.
Pros and cons come into play in most Web site design decisions. For example, developers must weigh design versus download time or latest technology versus browser compatibility. These decisions are unique to each site and Slocombe helps readers make knowledgeable choices. His advice can be as simple as hitting the auto button on the levels panel in Photoshop to clear up a muddy photograph or as complex as delivering appropriate content to your audience.
This is a hip book that looks at all the details involved in making a Web site. It's well written, well designed, well coded, and gets lots of attention from search bots. And it clues readers in to some of the coolest sites existing on the Web today. It may just be the pat on the fanny you need to get off to a good start with your own Web site. --Angelynn Grant
Book Description
With the emphasis firmly on creativity and individualism, Max Hits aims to encourage readers to be experimental and bold in order to produce an original and compelling website that will keep visitors coming back for more.
Debunking many of the myths and obstacles surrounding web design, Max Hits proves that you don?t need big budgets or the latest technology to produce a successful site. Readers can discover how to benefit from research and planning, and learn the practical processes of design, navigation and content management. Key issues such as accessibility, usability and information architecture are discussed and analyzed with case studies and examples. But successful web sites aren?t just built: they have to be actively promoted and marketed. Max Hits shows you how to construct and deliver an effective on-line marketing strategy, how to provide "sticky" content, and how to bump your site up the search engine rankings.

Totally Worthless.......2006-07-29
This book gets 1 star because it has nice pictures of web sites and therefore might make a good coffee table book. It has little or no content of use for any person who has even gotten on to the internet. For example, the chapter discussing Drop Down Menus says "These can be an effective tool for presenting multiple choices in a small space." Duh! It then gives a few links to sites where you can supposedly download free drop down menu scripts.
I bought the book because of the two 5 star reviews. I now believe that the author himself wrote those reviews. I can't believe that a non-biased reviewer would ever give this book more than 1 star.
I also bought "Small Websites, Great Results" by Doug Addison. That book is not perfect (mainly because he references live web sites as examples and of course they are always changing), but I got more useful information from 5 pages of his book than I got out of the entire "Max Hits" book.

This should be on every designer's bookshelf!.......2002-10-14
An intern brought in a copy of this book into the office and before I knew it, all the designers were demanding they got a copy too!
It's a great book that deals with the stuff that's often forgotten when building a site - like explaining the benefits of good planning from the outset and then getting the thing ranked highly on search engines!
I love it!.......2002-02-12
Got the book yesterday and didn't put it down till I read the whole thing from cover to cover! This is great book for anyone wanting to learn the best way to plan, prepare and promote a website and the author's succinct and witty style doesn't make it feel like a class lecture! The in-depth guides about search engines and information architecture means I've learnt how to get my next site right from the start and there's some great inspirational illustrations in there too.
