Book Description
Pollution, alternative fuels, congestion, intelligent transportation systems, and the shift from construction to maintenance all call for a reconsideration of the existing highway revenue mechanisms, in particular the gas tax. David Levinson explores the fundamental theoretical basis of highway finance, in particular the use of tolls, and supports that theory with empirical evidence. The author examines highway finance from the perspective of individual jurisdictions and travelers, and considers their interactions, rather than specifying a single optimal solution. Congestion pricing has long been a goal of transportation economists, who believe it will result in a more efficient use of resources. Levinson argues that if the governance were to become more decentralized, and collection costs continue to drop, tolls could return to prominence as the preferred means of financing roads for both local and inter-city travel. An approach that creates the local winners necessary to implement road pricing is required before it can be expected to become widespread.
Economists, civil engineers, planners, students and policymakers will find this detailed examination of transportation networks enlightening and useful.

Book Description
This book is directed at a wide range of readers interested in transport and/or European policies. It gives an overview of the current problems and challenges facing the European transport system and explains how a new European policy on transport infrastructure is emerging. The author argues that strong action at the EU level is needed to prevent the collapse of long distance transport. Without adequate measures in the transport sector to cope with the increase of trade and mobility associated with the development of the Single Market, European integration will stagnate. The book includes an overview of the actions undertaken in the past and the first comprehensive critical analysis of the Guidelines on trans-European transport networks (TEN's) decided by the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament in July 1996. From this, the author proposes a framework, based on efficiency, sustainability and cohesion objectives, for the establishment of a new multimodal TEN that would supersede the current TENs design. He pays particular attention to the transport implications of both the accession to the EU of Central and Eastern European countries and of the strengthening of the links with the Mediterranean neighbours. After a discussion of the political and financial difficulties of implementing TENs, he makes some practical proposals regarding the interaction between European institutions and the Member States vis-á-vis the new transport infrastructure policy. Finally, the critical questions of decision making and financing of major transport infrastructure projects are analysed to ascertain the many transformations required to introduce market rules in the sector, in particular those needed to attract private financing, and he concludes with some proposals for major changes in the role of EU institutions.

Book Description
This pioneering volume uses modern statistical and simulation techniques to explain the process of wealth transmission and the persistent problem of the unequal distribution of wealth. These papers reflect a shift from the traditional cross-sectional measurement to an intertemporal focus by attempting to model mathematically the actual process by which wealth is acquired and transmitted. There are many questions to be answered: What are the factors influencing saving? What is the role of mating? What decides ownership between spouses? How are rare assets distributed by divorce? What are the patterns of behavior in making gifts and bequests? And what is the effect of the relative ages of the persons involved?

Musings.......2005-01-12
Drawing on the often clever observations of the author, a freelance sportswriter, I GOT JOKES AND ANECDOTES covers a wide range of topics including fake British accents, cell phones, why celebrities go broke while members of their entourage prosper, movie awards, football and diets. In an installment aptly titled "hypocrites," the author muses on the absurdity of the situation when the church is the preacher's only source of income and the preacher drives a Mercedes. He also comments on people with "crusty feet" explaining why they should not wear sandals. With it's variety of topics, the book, while not laugh out loud funny has something for everyone. The author does an admirable job in getting his point across without the use of crude or offensive language.
I GOT JOKES AND ANECDOTES is a quick, easy and entertaining read which showcases the authors unique ability to find humor in the mundane. While it is not a hysterically funny book, it is guaranteed to bring a smile if not a chuckle or two to your day.

Very Interesting.......2003-12-10
I read this book in less than an hour. I thought it was very funny. Mr. Pechacek kept it real the intire book. This was my first time reading a book of this nature. I hope there will more like it.
Through the Eyes of John Pechacek.......2003-07-04
I have to admit, I read this book in one sitting. Not because of it's length. Not because of the attractive cover art. But because the book tells it like it is, no holds barred, the truth and only the truth. As I read through, from beginning to end, I found myself laughing out loud. Everything people have perhaps noticed at one time yet were afraid to talk about in public for fear that one would be labeled "strange" for such thoughts, such observations. It's about time someone put these types of thoughts on paper!
In a world of endless Self Help books, John's book is a relief. It is fun to read, tough to put down, and impossible not to laugh as you turn each page.

The Real Jazz!.......2006-06-26
This book explains very clearly the warm up exercises of the Luigi technique. This technique allows you to dance Jazz from the inside, what you learn here can be applied to ballet, modern dance, or any other technique plus to your daily life. The pictures and explanations are easy to understand, but it requires time to learn each exercise. If you have been in a Luigi class before this book will help you remember the exercises.
luigi revisited.......2006-03-04

easy to read et to follow...
A must for any jazz teacher!

Aesthetically and medically correct.......2005-05-25
Luigi is a miracle. His dance technique grew out of his self-rehabilitation from a paralysis caused by head trauma. The injury forced him to discover how to stand, walk, and dance with perfect balance and alignment...or he wouldn't have been able to stand, walk, or dance at all. That knowledge has been refined into a jazz dance technique that is CORRECT. It won't hurt the body, and it will actually heal many muscle and joint problems. And it looks absolutely beautiful! This book does an excellent job of explaining not only Luigi's technique, but also Luigi's philosophy that underlies the technique. It should be in the library of every dancer, and of anyone interested in proper body alignment and movement.
Easy to follow, splendid jazz training system.......2002-03-05
As a former dancer, now teacher and choreographer, I have been dancing and teaching Luigi's style for many years(without reading his book). I was taught by an amarican dancer, so when I recently read the book, I was surprised how well known the exercises and not less Luigi's philosophy was to me. The book is a perfect way to learn jazz, diff. steps (lots of small photographs) and not to forget his brilliant idea:"take the barre with you" out on the floor. The most complete jazz system I've ever trained.
The book is easy read, easy to follow even for beginners, and not to forget - a perfect way to get strong, long and smooth muscles. I can only recommend the book - a fine supplement to related books and videos.
A great book for those interested in dance.......2000-05-25
I thought this book was great! Luigi's personal and professional story is truly inspirational. All aspects of this book was well written. I found the content of this book a tremendous help. I highly recommend it to those such as myself who have never taken a dance class, but are interested in signing up for class and need to prepare in advance for flexibility, strength, etc. The book is easy to follow; the photographs give plenty of visual detail and the descriptions are specifically written to be easily followed by a novice. The exercises in this book condition the body wonderfully in preparation for dance.

Book Description
Our holidays lie near the heart of our emotional life, enjoyed for a fortnight, fed on in imagination for eleven months of the year. What we want from our holidays tells a lot about who we are and what we wish we were.
In this charming account Fred Inglis traces the rise of the holiday from its early roots in the Grand Tour through the coming of Thomas Cook and his Blackpool packages to sex tourism and the hippie trail to Kathmandu. He celebrates the bodily pleasures of generations of tourists - from Edwardian banquets in Paris to fish and chips on the beach, from the Bright Young Things on the Riveria to the chosen hardships of the sea, the desert wastes and the mountain tops. He considers the ideals and the spiritual aspirations which are part of what we look for in a holiday, but he also warns of a darker current- how we have increasingly destroyed what we take most pleasure in and how the dealings between those who have much and those who have little, can seldom, however good our intentions, avoid the taint of exploitation.

What a Book!.......2001-12-24
Donna Halper really knows her stuff, and she knows how to tell it in an interesting way. Everyone interested in how media affects us and society will be grateful for reading this. The struggles women had (and have) provide a significant glimpse into a world that is vital for us to understand. Highly recommended.
Women in broadcasting.......2001-07-13
If I had been a shaker and a mover in some area of broadcasting, it might have beem hard for me to read Donna Halper's new book, "Invisible Stars"--without feeling some embarrassment. Her story is the story of women who succeeded in American broadcasting, many of whom succeed in spite of the fact of their gender. It seems that back in the 1920s when radio was considered a toy, women were quite welcome to announce, sing or play an instrument, become program directors, and even in rare cases, own a radio station. But when radio began to be commercially profitable, when more and more people had radios, when networks came into being, then women were not so welcome, especially in the ranks of management. By the decades, Halper takes us through the history of how women made their mark, or were denied even the opportunity of trying to do that. The struggle of women for recognition and equality in radio and television reads something like the struggle for the same things by black people and other minorities. One of the mysteries that Halper brings to our attention is the developments before, during, and after World War II. Before the War, women's place was in the home, being the dutiful wife, keeping house, cooking the meals, taking care of the kids. During the War, women were encouraged to take jobs in war manufacturing plants, AND to do all the traditional stuff. When, after the War, the men came back and wanted their jobs back, women were expected to go back to the kitchen and nursery. And the same thing happened in broadcasting. The sad thing is that even though some women in radio and television have made important gains, much of the picture of broadcasting in the 2000s is not much different from what it was in the 1950s. Halper has done an excellent job of research, witness her extensive bibliography, in this well-written account of women in American broadcasting. Let Halper have the last word: "Perhaps one day soon, the pioneering women of radio and television will be given the same respect for their accomplishments that society has accorded their male counterparts. I hope this book will contribute to the process and keep women of broadcasting from remaining invisible stars."
A Review of _Invisible Stars_.......2001-07-10
Donna Halper's book Invisible Stars sheds daylight on the dim careers of American women in broadcasting. It's a lively book, and the women in it are a lively bunch: not only the expected announcers and managers, but station owners and transmitter engineers have braved minority odds to follow the muse of radio. Arranged by decades from the pioneering 20s through the era of big networks to the fragmented markets of the new millennium, Halper's book traces a good double handful of female achievers as their careers changed with the times.
Halper's own achievements are noteworthy, not just in radio but in writing. The book is intensively researched and lavish of detail, yet written in a bright, wry style that continually absorbs and entertains. It's a serious work, but an accessible one, and not for hyper-feminists only. Halper doesn't suffer anit-feminists gladly, but clearly shows that anti-feminists aren't all male. Her just exasperation at sweeping stereotypes is tempered with humor and an admirably balanced tone. She chronicles the unfairness these women faced in their careers and is never unfair herself: when there are extenuating or alternative explanations for blatantly sexist acts, she always takes the time to point them out.
Gender interaction in the 20th century workplace isn't simply a tale of oppressors and their victims, and Halper knows that. She charts the ambiguous, hypocritical and sometimes schizophrenic attitudes in the minds of both sexes, and uncovers their roots in recession and war, as well as in the less excusable manipulations of the media. The women in this book aren't pure rebels or pure conformists. They're competent people trying to do their jobs, though power-structures are rigid, privilege is stacked against them, and shifting media mantras about how women ought to behave this time hum obsessively in the background.
Invisible Stars, in short, is no partisan screed, but an honest examination of its topic. Rational readers of both genders can expect to learn a lot from it about the workings of radio and of reality.
Long overdue recognition.......2001-06-12
Halper has finally given readers a book that highlights the formidable contributions of women in electronic media. The book is an important addition to the canon of broadcast history, and the author deserves credit for her thorough and ground-breaking research. The book is an enjoyable read and offers a wealth of information on how the so-called "ladies of the air" brought something of real substance and value to a hitherto male-dominated industry. It should be required reading for all student's of media as well as for those individuals who occupy executive and managerial positions in radio and television.

Good first DirectShow book for beginners.......2006-11-28
I knew nothing about DirectShow before I read this book. This book helped me quickly gain enough knowledge to start creating programs that use DirectShow capabilities. Yes, all the information is in the SDK document. But my learning time would have been much longer if I were to start by reading SDK documents. The author has digested the document and selected a subset of information to create this book. The book is self-contained enough that I didn't need to read other documents to understand the example codes. It is a good first DirectShow book for DirectShow beginners.
Very tired of reading it.......2004-12-21
I have to work with DShow for my job. This book is the only one available (afaik)... But it is awfully written.
Mark D. Pesce does not EXPLAIN anything, he just DESCRIBES a set of, more or less enhanced, SDK samples.
It is a shame.
I will read it from the start to the very end because I have to do so. I am really tired of this.
Not exactly "just the SDK" but still not great.......2004-04-22
I bought this book several months ago but I've held off writing a review as I have been trying to learn DirectShow.
It is not exactly just the SDK documentation in a paper binding but it isn't a whole lot more either. Most people trying to how to use DirectShow will probably buy this book anyway and they probably should: it is at least better than nothing. But don't get your hopes up.
My biggest gripe is that at least one of the examples in this book which does not come directly from the SDK sample programs doesn't seem to actually work. It compiles, and it runs, but it just doesn't display anything.
Too little on VMR.......2004-04-21
I wanted to read more about the new VMR9, but the book disappointed me with the thin coverage of VMR9 and videoplayback in general. I guess the book is all right on the topics filters, video editing and video caption.
Needed to like it, but...........2004-01-28
I wanted to like this book - mostly because I really needed a book covering some of the problems I was having with DirectShow. The company I work for has DirectShow as the core component of their customer-facing software. I wasn't brought in to work on that part of it, but it quickly fell under my umbrella. I had no DirectShow experience, so I turned to the SDK docs and looked for a few books.
Well I have to say that if it wasn't for the SDK docs I would have been sunk. Both this book and Programming Direct Show have been real losers. This is better than the other book, but that isn't saying much.
Like previous posters I was disappointed by the audio. I have to support file playback, streaming, and control of a tv card through my interface. Its not rocket science, but the dearth of material on controlling tv cards in this book made it all but useless to me. The same material exists in the same form on MS DirectShow docs - the author added next to nothing.
I did give it 2 stars because sometimes it is nice to have the SDK documentation - with a little extra - to read when you are away from the computer. The author however should be ashamed for putting out such a cut-n-paste effort, pathetic.
