The realization among econometricians and applied economists that seasonal variation in many time series is often larger and less regular than has been supposed, has recently led to an increased interest in seriously modelling seasonality. The relative size of seasonal variation also means that such modelling is of major economic interest. Important developments in modelling seasonality have occurred - the last ten years have seen improvements in the model based procedures, the discovery of periodic models, seasonal integration and cointegration, and in the development of economic theories of seasonality. This volume brings together some leading papers on the existing standard economic theory of seasonality as well as papers which apply newer statistical tools to the modelling of seasonal phenomena. In addition to the topics already mentioned, it presents and discusses the X-11 method of seasonal adjustment and the introduction includes a description and assessment of the most recent developments.

Regular estimates of regional pasture growth rate (PGR) would prove invaluable for wool producers in the agricultural zone of Western Australia (WA) wishing to adopt efficient techniques of managing the supply of annual pasture. Data from the AVHRR sensor are routinely processed to provide bi-monthly NDVI (normalised difference vegetation index) composite images of the agricultural zone of WA. We used a time series of NDVI imagery for 1995 to 1998 together with coincident climate layers in a light use efficiency (LUE) model to generate PGR maps for WA. We only operated the model for areas of the agricultural zone where pasture constituted more than 60% of the land cover. The regional estimates were compared with whole-farm averages made at three farms using pasture exclosures positioned across the main land management units (LMUs) on each property. Significant relationships were obtained between predicted and observed PGR for the three farms Kojonup, Porongurup and Williams of R^2 0.67, 0.75 and 0.70, respectively. A validation study in 1999 at five farms used a potential productivity index for LMUs to scale the regional estimates down to paddock level. The relationship between predicted and observed PGR, for data averaged by LMU, had an R^2 of 0.69. Given that little information on regional PGR currently exists, estimates generated by such LUE models from in-line AVHRR processing made available on the internet or by subscription can greatly improve the basis for feed management across wool growing enterprises in the south west of WA. This approach could readily be applied to other highly seasonal grazing systems around the world.

This paper presents the results from an exercise in atmospheric contaminant fate modelling, which had three main objectives: (1) to investigate the balance between estimated national atmospheric emissions of six selected PAHs and observed ambient measurements for the UK, as a means of testing the current emission estimates; (2) to investigate the potential influence of seasonally dependent environmental fate processes on the observed seasonality of air concentrations; and (3) after undertaking the first two objectives, to make inferences about the likely magnitude of seasonal differences in sources. When addressing objective 1 with annually averaged emissions data, it appeared that the UK PAH atmospheric emissions inventory was reasonably reliable for fluorene, fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene and benzo[ghi]perylene--but not so for phenanthrene. However, more detailed analysis of the seasonality in environmental processes which may influence ambient levels, showed that the directions and/or magnitudes of the predicted seasonality did not coincide with field observations. This indicates either that our understanding of the environmental fate and behaviour of PAHs is still limited, and/or that there are uncertainties in the emissions inventories. It is suggested that better quantification of PAH sources is needed. For 3- and 4-ringed compounds, this should focus on those sources which increase with temperature, such as volatilisation from soil, water, vegetation and urban surfaces, and possible microbially-mediated formation mechanisms. The study also suggests that the contributions of inefficient, diffusive combustion processes (e.g. domestic coal/wood burning) may be underestimated as a source of the toxicologically significant higher molecular weight species in the winter. It is concluded that many signatory countries to the UNECE POPs protocol (which requires them to reduce national PAH emissions to 1990 levels) will experience difficulties in demonstrating compliance, because source inventories for 1990 and contemporary situations are clearly subject to major uncertainties.

In the electricity generating sector of an economy, supply hardly responds to unexpected demand increases. Furthermore, the seasonal pattern accounts for a major part of short-term variations in demand. In this sense, identifying the salient features of this pattern could contribute in avoiding supply problems. This paper is concerned with the analysis of the seasonal behaviour of the hourly Spanish electricity demand. Structural models are used to handle these hourly observations and splines are embedded within such models to create parsimonious formulations of periodic effects that are able to cope leap years.

Monthly data for 11 moorland streams displaying marked seasonality and spatial variation in nitrate concentrations have been used with readily available catchment characteristics to develop a method for predicting stream water nitrate concentrations throughout an upland river network in the Lake District, UK. Over a 12-month period, a simple asymmetric truncated cosine function of day number is used to describe seasonality effects on stream water nitrate concentrations. This is then adjusted to compensate for differences in seasonality effects with catchment elevation. Occurrence of greater proportions of steeper slopes (>20^o-40^o) in individual catchments facilitated nitrate leaching, as did increased extent of occurrence of outcropping rocks. It is shown that the spatial and temporal variation in nitrate concentration through the river network studied may therefore be effectively represented by an equation which is a function of day number, % outcropping rock and % of catchment area with a >20^o-40^o slope.

Monoterpenes play an important role in regulating the trace gas composition of the lower troposphere. Therefore, realistic estimates of the daily as well as seasonal variations of monoterpene emission source strength on the Earth surface are required. Monoterpenes are emitted by Holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) and other species lacking specific foliar terpene storage structures and their development is dependent on light and temperature. In the present work we describe a process-based emission model taking into account the physiological/phenological state of Holm oak leaves and biochemical processes leading to the formation of monoterpenes. The model 'seasonal isoprenoid synthase model-biochemical isoprenoid biosynthesis model' (SIM-BIM2) is developed based on a previous version which was used to simulate isoprene emissions from deciduous oaks. The current model considers additional enzymatic reactions in Holm oak chloroplasts that lead to the formation of monoterpenes. The comparison of simulated and measured biochemical properties as well as emission rates displayed that the ability of the model to dynamically adjust monoterpene biosynthesis capacity by modulating the amount of monoterpene synthase activities in dependence of the weather pattern led to realistic simulations of light-dependent monoterpene emission rates. Differences to simulation results obtained by a widely used alternative model [Guenther, A.B., Zimmerman, P.R., Harley, P.C., Monson, R.K., Fall, R., 1993. Isoprene and monoterpene emission rate variability-model evaluations and sensitivity analyses. Journal of Geophysical Research 98, 12609-12617] are discussed.

Nexus is a science-fiction series influenced by Space Ghost, and 60's/70's Marvel comics.
Next Nexus moves away from the series main character Horatio and looks at the three Loomis sisters(named after illustrator Andre Loomis.). And the trouble the little sister can cause.
Like all of the Nexus books by Steve Rude its a visual treat. Rude mixes his art influences of Kirby, Manning, Loomis, Toth, Gulacy, Dr. Seuss etc. into pure Rude.

Not to go against the curve here, but I must say this book is a complete waste of money. Any idiot can figure out half of the "secrets" mentioned in this book. The author also wastes about half of the book explaining how to do such mundane tasks as installing itunes and charging your ipod. DO NOT BUY YOU CAN FIND ALL THESE ANSWERS ONLINE WITHIN MINUTES.

Whether you just purchased an iPod or have had one for years, you NEED THIS BOOK! This book is the true "Missing Manual." I have bought and returned a lot of books regarding my beloved iPod. This book covers it all in one book. I haven't seen anything like it, and believe me, I have been looking!

You think you know everything about iPods? Want to know how to "do something?" This is your book. I say this because I considered myself a intermediate expert (if such a term exists) helping my friends set up both their iPod and iTunes, fielding ongoing questions, suggesting cool accessory websites, etc, but this book showed me some stuff.

The one to Buy!!.......2005-01-09

I've bought 3 other iPod books. Two were to basic but had some goodies and one was a "waste" in my opinion.

The iPod & iTunes book by Kirk REALLY adds to my knowledge base and shows he KNOWS(!) the iPod and iTunes. He goes beyond a simple product manual and tells you HOW TO GET THINGS DONE.

I highly recommend the book and ask why it took so long to come out.

Mac-like Approach to Learning.......2005-01-08

Anytime someone can make learning how to make software and hardware interesting and fun its worth a read.

After purchasing an iPod and struggling to make it do what I knew it was supposed to do, I scoured the book stores for a book that would show me the way. I found Kirk's fun and intuitive approach (very Mac-like) to be perfect. As a long time Apple user, and often times under utilizer of software (because I hate to read manuals). It was refreshing to find someone that gets it, and writes a book for those of us that need a little humor with our how-to. Check out is webpage too.

Another added plus... I e-mailed Kirk for a little extra help, and to my amazement he responded, timely too. With the many iPod and iTune books out there, this is one to be by your side while the others stay in the store.

Buy this Book! Not just another computer manual.......2005-01-08

Let me say this straight out - computer books are pointless, they are either of the 'for dummies' variety, printed versions of a manual [presumably to encourage software piracy] or for techies by techies...THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT! Why? Well because the author loves music and he talks about music throughout, he [and other guest] even review music and after all what is the iPod about but love of music and the freedom to have your music where and when you wish...sure it is a clever device, clever design, etc. but leave the technical stuff for people who love technology and the design for those for whom the packaging is the thing - for the rest of us we have music. Clearly the book isn't just a compilation of reviews that might have appeared in NME or Rolling Stone [or Relix] but the appreciation of music, the passion to try and get people to try different types of music runs all the way through the book. Yes it does all you might expect from a book on the iPod [and iTunes]|: it guides the user from basics to advanced tweaks [mercifully more advanced than the this is a button, this is a scroll wheel, type of 'for dummies' stuff], but never more than a few pages go by and there is another section on some record or artist.
Grateful Dead, Brian Eno, Joy Division, Durutti Column, Steve Reich, Bill Evans - all here.

Now if I have one suggestion to the author it is to apply his technological knowledge and love of music to the wider subject of online music sharing and downloading. That will be a second 'computer book' worth buying.

I must say... THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! i am a vb6/asp developer and had some contact with vb.net before but couldnt quite understand some parts of it until i read this book. It set me on the right track to begin working with both asp.net and vb.net a must have for anyone who wishes to learn vb.net the right and quick way.
