    Book Description

    This comprehensive course provides a thorough review of the ISO Personal Auto Policy. The Declarations Page, four Insuring Agreements and General Provisions are explained in detail.

    The course employs a policy analysis approach in which the June 1998 edition of the Personal Auto Policy form is examined section by section. It also contains concrete examples of how insurance coverage applies, is limited or is excluded under the form.

    Students will learn how the policy typically responds to various bodily injury, property damage and liability losses and how endorsements may be used to amend the basic policy form. The purpose of No Fault legislation and the three types of No Fault laws are also explained.

    If you are taking this course for CE, the CE exam will automatically be added to your basket when selecting CE credit. Certain states require that a proctor/monitor supervise the exam taking process.

    Book Description

    Based on a course in the theory of statistics this text concentrates on what can be achieved using the likelihood/Fisherian method of taking account of uncertainty when studying a statistical problem. It takes the concept ot the likelihood as providing the best methods for unifying the demands of statistical modelling and the theory of inference. Every likelihood concept is illustrated by realistic examples, which are not compromised by computational problems. Examples range from a simile comparison of two accident rates, to complex studies that require generalised linear or semiparametric modelling. The emphasis is that the likelihood is not simply a device to produce an estimate, but an important tool for modelling. The book generally takes an informal approach, where most important results are established using heuristic arguments and motivated with realistic examples. With the currently available computing power, examples are not contrived to allow a closed analytical solution, and the book can concentrate on the statistical aspects of the data modelling. In addition to classical likelihood theory, the book covers many modern topics such as generalized linear models and mixed models, non parametric smoothing, robustness, the EM algorithm and empirical likelihood.

    5 out of 5 stars In All Likelihood: Statistical Modelling and Inference Using Likelihood.......2006-05-13

    I give the book 5 stars, meaning excellent at what it sets out to accomplish. It is one of the few books that does a sound job of integrating statistical theory and statistical practice. Not meant to be a first course in statistics, but probably excellent for a third or fourth course. The student should probably have had a year long course in mathematical statistics and an introduction to statistical computing in R with linear models. After all, the book is focused on likelihood based statistical inference. I should note that the book is stresses integrating statistical ideas and statistical thinking, it is not a mathematical statistics text. The text contains a number of topics (18 chapters) and should be of interest to anyone who wishes to be a competent applied statistician. Any student who has had a year with Mood & Graybill, "Introduction to the Theory of Statistics", and a year with "Statistical Models" by A.C. Davison, will be ready to appreciate "In All Likelihood". Any student who has all three of these courses will have a fundamental understanding of statistical inference and what it means to be an applied statistician. They will also achieve this in the shortest, most direct path.

    5 out of 5 stars Statistical Modelling and Inference for this Century.......2004-05-30

    I used "In All Likelihood" as a basis for the 13 week 3rd year Mathematical Statistics/ Statistical Inference course I have almost finished teaching. Finding this book at Amazon was my very good fortune. It is exactly the way I would have tried to write such a course but I couldn't have done as good a job as Pawitan.

    I like this book because it covers all the theory, such as, sufficiency, completeness, minimum variance unbiased estimation, large sample asymptotics etc. But the beauty of the book lies in the relevant, modern examples. Likelihood functions are liberally graphed for the many examples. These are created in R; if you are an R user, or wish to be, you'll like the availability of the source code. If you're not into R, it won't make a difference to the usability of the book.

    Books like Bickel & Doksum, Casella & Berger and Rice, have the theory, but not the range of practical examples that add so much to "In All Likelihood". Pawitan's theoretical sections are comparatively easy to follow. Pawitan points out important results rather than the reader needing to surmise what bits of theory are useful in practice.

    On the other hand, since reading Pawitan I can now read sections out of McCullough and Nelder, and other applications books, no longer feeling I have missed some important background theory.

    I see signs of good teaching practice throughout "In All Likelihood" that make it easy to learn and teach from. For example, difficult concepts are often initially introduced in an example and then reintroduced in technical detail. This way the learner feels some familiarity the second time around.

    Semester is nearly over. We covered the first nine chapters (out of 18) in 38 hours of lectures. I'm reading the rest of the book now. Every page or two something else I have heard, seen or read in the past begins to make more sense. Examples of topics in the second half of the book are the EM algorithm, Generalized Estimating Equations and random/mixed effects models. I told my students that if they considered buying a book for their future in statistics, "In All Likelihood" is a very good one.

        5 out of 5 stars Easy to use and multiple learning methods.......2006-11-27

        I used this textbook for a Macroecon class in college and it has got to be one of the best textbooks I've ever used. Not only is the textbook itself well written and easily explains complex theories, but it also comes with a DVD and online component. The online DiscoverEcon site gives you access to self-quizzes and further examples to help study. The DVD is basically lectures done in an easy to follow and entertaining (as entertaining as economics can be anyway) format.

        I hope that my professor in my Microeconomics class uses the textbook from the same author.

        1 out of 5 stars Avoid if you can.......2006-03-27

        I think this is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. It uses 14 different sentences to say the same thing, and makes basic concepts seem complicated by overstating/analyzing them. This book could be significantly shorter...maybe the author was getting paid by the word?
        If you have any choice of textbooks for macroeconomics class, I recommend you choose one other than this. If you're the professor of the class, I beg you to not make your students endure this book. :) Thank you.

        5 out of 5 stars Economics made interesting - how about that?.......2005-09-19

        I've never before been interested in economics, so what do I know about econ text books? Not much. But I know a good text book when I use one, and this is a very good one. It is well written and easy to follow. It makes an otherwise dull subject both learnable and enjoyable. Yes, even interesting. It is also very up-to-date, with some very current examples that really resonate with the 21st Century Economics student. All in all - first rate!

                  Book Description

                  Extrovert on stage, introvert off, Bruce Springsteen has a lot to say about his life and work, and his place in American society. The Boss has retained his dignity through 25 years as America's foremost rock performer. Never a man to rush into anything, Bruce's words are carefully considered, thoughtful, passionate and sincere.

                  QUOTES INCLUDE: `In the third grade a nun stuffed me in a garbage can under her desk because she said that's where I belonged.';

                  `There ain't a note that I play on stage that can't be traced back directly to my mother and father.';

                  `The first day I can remember looking into a mirror and being able to stand what I saw was the day I had a guitar in my hand.';

                  `You ride in a limousine the first time, it's a big thrill but after that it's just a stupid car.';

                  `At this point, I don't need my records to be Number One or sell as many as this person or that person. That's not fundamentally important - I don't believe that sustains you.'

                  Bruce Springsteen "Talking" is a collection of memorable quotes from rock-and-roll veteran legend Bruce Springsteen. Black-and-white and a handful of color photographs illustrate this memorable assembly of keen insight, carefully considered discussions, and since exhortations straight from the heart. Covering everything from daily life to roles in American society to the turn of the millennium, these vignettes make for quick reading yet expose one to the depth of Springsteen's personal character, in a most thought-provoking and intriguing manner. "When Regan mentioned my name in New Jersey, I felt it was another manipulation, and I had to disassociate myself from the president's kind words." - Springsteen, 1984.

                  Visiting a new place but don't want to visit the rote "tourist traps" or cliched locales that everybody and their cousin has seen? This guide is PERFECT. This is how to really get the "feel" of a city, rather than mindlessly tromping to one tourist attraction after the next.

                  Also, sections are perfectly organized, such as: Best Live Music Clubs, Best Dance Bars, Best All-Night Eateries, Best Jazz Clubs, Best Record Stores, etc.

                  I used this book on a recent first outing to San Francisco; everything was "as advertised." Yes, some of the listings are out-of-date, but that's to be expected. This should actually be a website!

                  Buy it. Read it on the plane there. I can't recommend this enough.

                  The way I can tell if a guide book is good, is how accurate the entries in my city are. In this book, they hit the nail on the head in most sections dealing in San Diego, but they also had a lot of old information. They listed clubs that have been closed for some time now. But, overall, the book seems to serve its purpose and would make a better, cooler, hipper travel companion than all the other middle of the road travel guides out on the market.

                      5 out of 5 stars Can't ask for better book: "The Everyday Internet All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies (For Dummies)".......2007-08-29

                      I've first checked this book out from the Chicago Public Library three times and once kept it two months after the book check out expired. The I purchased the book myself. I can not offer enough praise for this well researched and written book on the Internet. This is definitely the "Book" for pros and "dummies" alike.

                      I have been working in technology for eighteen years with the U.S. Navy and using the Internet for nine years now and admittedly I only possessed about less 10% of the available resources that was presented in this book. Just visiting and bookmarking all those interesting link to various useful Web sites was good enough for me (100+ useful bookmarks from this book alone).

                      My college textbooks and other "big computer books" weren't as valuable as this one. With this new gained knowledge, I've referred this book to my instructor for the "Basic Internet Class" that I took at the one of the City Colleges of Chicago (Truman College) and my fellow classmates agreed that this book "The Everyday Internet All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies" was more informative than our classroom resources and textbook. Buy this book if you want to REALLY learn something about this subject.

                      One final thought, read Mr. Peter Weverka's "The Internet Giga Book for Dummies". You won't be disappointed in my recommendation on this wonderful read. Peace out and take care.

                      You'll learn more practical information about "everything internet" within the pages of this book than 7 years of online meandering. Seriously, just buy this sucker cause it provides clear answers to questions you don't even know you have yet, or should have. Excellent book. Truly a horizon broadener.

                      I turn to this book all the time for information on how to build and maintain my blog (phatmike.motime.com). The best, most informative book that I've ever read on the subject.

                      Thanks, Mister Weverka!!!

                      Pardon me for being immodest and giving this book a 5-star rating, since I'm the author, but I believe this is the best book going about the latest incarnation of the Internet.

                      These are exciting times for the Internet. Peer-to-peer file sharing, news aggregators, and other advances in technology have inspired a new generation of Web sites and services. Never before has the Internet offered so many ways to conduct research, entertain yourself, or learn new things.

                      The motive behind this book is to present everything on the Internet that's worth doing because it's useful, it's a lot of fun, or it's innovative and therefore worth checking out. Close to a thousand different Web sites are described in this book, but this book isn't a directory of Web sites. The focus is on doing things -- researching, online banking, communicating, making new friends, playing games, talking over the Internet telephone, online shopping, online selling, and blogging.

                      In the course of describing these and other activities -- everyday activities that can be part of your Internet repertoire -- I introduce you to the best and brightest of the Internet.

                      For those who are interested, this book looks at the technical aspects of the Internet. It tells you how to select an ISP and gives you instructions for connecting your computer to the Internet. The book explains how to protect your privacy and security, and keep viruses and spyware at bay, as well as how to use the different plug-ins (Flash, Acrobat Reader, and others). You will find advice for making the Internet a safe and rewarding experience for children, many Web sites for children and parents, and instructions for using America Online.

                      Find out how to use a Web browser and how to be an Internet researcher, or better yet, an Internet detective from this book. It explains search techniques for reaching into all corners of the Internet to quickly find the information you need. You discover how to get the latest news and how to stay on top of late-breaking news with aggregators, as well as how to use different e-mail programs (some free and some not). You get definitive instructions in this book for preventing your inbox from being inundated with spam.

                      Look to this book to refine instant messenger programs, create a blog, and find mailing lists and message boards where you can exercise your obsessions. You find out how to conduct research in newsgroups and subscribe to newsgroups, as well as how to join or create your own Yahoo! group and chat on the IRC.

                      For budding Web site developers, this book demonstrates how to create a Web site on the cheap and how to submit a Web site to search engines so the site gets more hits. You also explore the social networking phenomenon and learn about Web sites and services where you can make new friends and reunite with old ones. The book has detailed instructions for setting up your computer so you can make free long-distance telephone calls over the Internet.

                      I devote part of the book to online finances -- how to research investments and get the latest financial news, maintain an online investment portfolio, and do your banking chores online.

                      You will find many shopping search engines and Web sites that specialize in comparison-shopping, as well as online catalogs, stores for bargain hunters, consumer-report Web sites, and an "online shopping bazaar" with hundreds of off-beat online shops worth visiting. I take you to a number of online auction houses, including eBay, and you discover how to search for, bid on, and buy items at bargain prices, as well as how to pay for items with the excellent PayPal service.

                      You find out how to be the first on your block to be an online seller and how you can make money by selling or conducting a business over the Internet.

                      Finally, the book looks into different Internet pastimes and pursuits. I'm warning you: Some of these activities are addictive. You discover the many excellent genealogical research Web sites and how to conduct genealogical research for free over the Internet. The book also looks at games sites, including novel games such as Geocaching. For travelers and armchair-adventurers, I direct you to Web sites where you can get travel advice, plan vacations, purchase tickets, and book hotel rooms and rental cars. You discover how to turn your lowly computer into an entertainment console by purchasing music online or sharing music files.

                      I am intrigued by the idea that a Web site is a creative endeavor in and of itself -- that a Web site is a clickable piece of artwork. For this book, I chose not only Web sites that are useful for finding information or buying things but also Web sites that I consider intriguing, wonderful, astonishing, bizarre, or entertaining.

                      Some people are calling this latest incarnation of the Internet "the Web 2.0." This book is your guide to the next incarnation of the Internet. It was written to show you how to make the Internet fun and useful again.
