Environmental Impact Assessment: A Practical Guide
ASIN: 0471985570 |
Book Description
Since the 1980s, and especially since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, there has been a substantial extension in the adoption and use of Environmental Assessment (EA) procedures in developing countries and countries in transition (low and middle income countries). However, few existing texts in environmental assessment or development studies have reflected this trend sufficiently, until this publication.
Divided into two main parts:
- EA Principles, Processes and Practice.
- Country and Institutional Studies of EA Procedures and Practice.
This book explains the essentials of environmental impact association in the context of developing countries and assesses its importance to both developed and developing countries.
Book Description
While formal quality management systems are a basic requirement for carriers doing business with the automotive industry, it is a company's understanding of key items such as leadership, continuous improvement, and customer satisfaction that is needed to survive and excel in today's market. Shifting Gears brings a unique approach to quality in the trucking industry, clearly defining the issues that challenge a carrier's very survival of business and, through the principles embodied in ISO 9000, discusses practical measures for addressing these challenges. It identifies ISO 9000 as an effective management tool, offering information on how business leaders can reduce their costs, improve their overall business efficiency, and improve their competitive advantage in the marketplace. This quality management principles book moves beyond quality management principles to include methods for use in day-to-day operations, helping carriers easily shift gears to make these tools a part of the company culture.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to read and informative.......2004-08-19
Of all the industries in the United States and around the world, few are as challenging as the transportation industry and more specifically, the trucking industry. Comprising 5% of the GDP and with over 70% of the cities and towns around the globe solely dependent on trucks to deliver their goods, trucking is truly the backbone of the economy. However, high insurance rates and fuel prices as well as a constant shortage of drivers have made running a trucking company a very difficult endeavor.
Although in use by many different industries, ISO and other quality programs are rarely used by trucking companies. In `Shifting Gears', the authors present case studies and easy-to-follow information that carriers and shippers can use to improve the processes related to shipping and trucking. Based on the premise that quality is a framework for improvement, the authors identify eight specific ISO quality management principles within the book:
Customer Focus
Leadership
Involvement of People
Process Approach
System Approach to Management
Continual Improvement
Factual Approach to Decision Making
Mutually Beneficial Supplier Relationships
Because the book is written in non-technical terms, trucking companies of all sizes will be able to learn and apply the lessons and advice within the book. Reading `Shifting Gears' will not make companies' experts in ISO 9000 but it will clearly explain the importance of structured quality programs and get them on the right path.
As someone who has spent the last 13 years in transportation and who is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt, I can attest that the trucking industry must embrace the quality principles of ISO and Six Sigma. Issues such as backhauls, revenue generation, freight pay and audit, OS&D, pick ups and deliveries, operating ratios, maintenance, etc., can be managed better through the use of a structured quality program such as ISO 9000.

Book Description
Two important new developments have occurred that have significant impact on the evolution of econometrics, namely, the end of the Cold War and the emergence of the information revolution in nearly all economies of the world.
The information revolution has had significant effect on data flows, making them much more timely, accessible, and descriptive of more parts of the economy. At the same time, it has changed the industrial structure of many economies, giving rise to increasing importance of the tertiary sectors (e.g. services). The new generation of hardware and software enables econometricians to handle larger and more complex problems, especially those that are data intensive and computer intrusive.
These major events require reconsideration and redrafting of some of the materials of the original edition.
The present volume retains the original structure of "Lectures on Microeconomic Theory" and takes up principles of constructing dynamic macroeconometric models and their use in economic analyses and forecasting, while introducing many updates, revisions and extensions. The description of the econometric methodology has been limited to specific applications of time series analysis, and the title has been changed to "Principles of Macroeconometric Modeling".
The first four chapters discuss the principles of specifying equations of structural macromodels, covering both developed marked economies, transition economies and world-wide models. The remaining chapters cover some major issues in the use of macromodels. The point of departure is model simulation, especially of the prevailing non-linear models, which is followed by model validation. The analysis of model dynamics covers economic fluctuations and the relevant implications of non-stationarity. The use of macromodels in policy analysis is presented next; it includes multiplier analysis and scenario simulations. The monograph ends up with forecasting being a special case of simulation analysis.

Econometric Methods

Description:
Forecast evaluation often compares a parsimonious null model to a larger model that nests the null model. Under the null that the parsimonious model generates the data, the larger model introduces noise into its forecasts by estimating parameters whose population values are zero. We observe that the mean squared prediction error (MSPE) from the parsimonious model is therefore expected to be smaller than that of the larger model. We describe how to adjust MSPEs to account for this noise. We propose applying standard methods [West, K.D., 1996. Asymptotic inference about predictive ability. Econometrica 64, 1067-1084] to test whether the adjusted mean squared error difference is zero. We refer to nonstandard limiting distributions derived in Clark and McCracken [2001. Tests of equal forecast accuracy and encompassing for nested models. Journal of Econometrics 105, 85-110; 2005a. Evaluating direct multistep forecasts. Econometric Reviews 24, 369-404] to argue that use of standard normal critical values will yield actual sizes close to, but a little less than, nominal size. Simulation evidence supports our recommended procedure.

Book Description
The book addresses the empirical validity of the factor proportions theory based on a new, extensive data basis. Departing from Heckscher-Ohlin theory, it extends existing models by allowing factor productivities and factor prices to differ across countries. It reformulates ranking proportions derived from the Heckscher-Ohlin-Vanek equations. Based on these models, it empirically investigates in a cross-industry framework the patterns of international trade for a big sample of countries. The results support the value version of the HOV-model, especially in the case of developing countries. Moreover, the HOV model with perfect competition cannot be rejected in favour of a model allowing for scale economies and product differentiation.

Description:
In this paper the usual product rule of probability theory is generalized by relaxing the assumption that elements of sets are equally likely to be drawn. The need for such a generalization has been noted by Jeffreys [1998. Theory of Probability, 3rd ed, reprinted in Oxford classics Series, Oxford University Press (1st ed.,1939), Oxford. pp. 24-25], among others, in his work on an axiom system for scientific learning from data utilizing Bayes's Theorem. It is shown that by allowing probabilities of elements to be drawn to be different, generalized forms of the product rule and Bayes's Theorem are obtained that reduce to the usual product rule and Bayes's Theorem under certain assumptions that may be satisfactory in many cases encountered in practice in which the principle of insufficient reason is inadequate. Also, in comparing alternative hypotheses, allowing the prior odds to be random rather than fixed provides a useful generalization of the standard posterior odds.
Book Description
By bringing together results from the growing literature in econometrics on misspecification testing, this study provides theoretical analyses and convenient methods for the implementation of tests in applied work. Although the main emphasis is on the Lagrange multiplier principle, several other approaches are discussed and the relationships among different methods are examined. The author reviews general checks of model adequacy that do not involve the formulation of an alternative hypothesis. General and specific tests are discussed in the context of multiple regression models, systems of simultaneous equations, and models with qualitative or limited dependent variables. This wide-ranging but integrated book will be useful to a wide audience of applied and theoretical researchers, graduate students, and professional economists.
Book Description
The book provides an introduction to rigorous general equilibrium analysis for non specialist students. It fills the gap that exists between the classic high-level texts and the limited presentation of the theory in terms of Edgeworth box diagrams.

Customer Reviews:
Keep This Book Around In Your Studio........2007-04-16
Mixers, Signal Processors, Microphones are by far the most complex areas of recording audio in general, this book helped me fully understand their basic operations and how they all in fact work together, I was able to learn the actual routing of your audio signal whether analog or digital.
I also enjoyed the DVD that comes with this product, fully visually explaining the concepts illustrated in the book for better retention, this book is by far the best on the subject. Highly Recommended !
You would be smart to get this book.......2007-03-22
This book is an excellant resource for anyone setting up a home or small studio. It explains the differeces of microphone types, explains how to set them up for the best recording, and even gives a list of microphones that have become renowned for quality and surability. It provides similar levles of information on mixing boards and various signal processors. An excellant reference book.
Reading this book will take some effort since it is paxked with so much information. The included DVD provides a good sampling of sounds demonstrating small changes to setup and how it can effect your results. The video on the dvd is small and lacks some of the details I would have liked, but this is a small problem compared to the overeall benefits of the book.
Very Nice!.......2006-05-07
The Mic placement examples are excellent, The filtering Tips are very good. If you can't learn from this smart guide series of books you never will. The students in my recording classes pick things up quick in these books. Great info!

From The Gr(S)ound Up!.......2006-04-29
Whether you want to record in a studio or work with live sound, this book really delivers. It takes you from hooking up the equipment correctly, through a thorough discussion of mixing boards and microphones, to sound processing including compressors, gates, reverb, and delay (phaser/flanger/chorus). When I picked up the book, I'd been working with live sound for about a year and wanted to start using effects and make the mixing more effective. I really just wanted to know what tools were out there and how to use them. This book has that and so much more. Topics include acoustics, electronics (like high vs. low impedance and all of the different connectors out there), mixers, mics, and effects. The information is presented so that you can grab the basics of setting up or really dig in to how things work. The many tips and examples really drive the information home. I wish a few of the pros that I talked to had steered me to this book! DEFINITE 5 STARS!
One of the best audio tech books for non-tech types........2005-12-21
I am a Market Development manager for the oldest microphone company in the US. I teach at conferences and seminars all over the country, primarily for houses of worship.I am always looking for great resources that will help enrich understanding of the subject. This book (and all the of the S.M.A.R.T Audio books) with it's colorful, hi-res photos, Audio/Video examples on it's accompanying DVD and it's lyric writing style engage all of our senses simultaneously. This is a must have book for anyone wanting to understand how audio and all of the associated components work. It's perfect for the Church Sound Volunteer.

Book Description
A complete guide to understanding, designing, and deploying Layer 2 VPN technologies and pseudowire emulation applications
- Evaluate market drivers for Layer 2 VPNs
- Understand the architectural frame-work and choices for Layer 2 VPNs, including AToM and L2TPv3
- Grasp the essentials of Layer 2 LAN and WAN technologies
- Examine the theoretical and operational details of MPLS and LDP as they pertain to AToM
- Understand the theoretical and operational details of Layer 2 protocols over L2TPv3 in IP networks
- Learn about Layer 2 VPN bridged and routed interworking and Layer 2 local switching
- Understand the operation and application of Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS)
- Learn about foundation and advanced AToM and L2TPv3 topics through an extensive collection of case studies
The historical disconnect between legacy Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPN solutions has forced service providers to build, operate, and maintain separate infrastructures to accommodate various VPN access technologies. This costly proposition, however, is no longer necessary. As part of its new Unified VPN Suite, Cisco Systems® now offers next-generation Layer 2 VPN services like Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol version 3 (L2TPv3) and Any Transport over MPLS (AToM) that enable service providers to offer Frame Relay, ATM, Ethernet, and leased-line services over a common IP/MPLS core network. By unifying multiple network layers and providing an integrated set of software services and management tools over this infrastructure, the Cisco® Layer 2 VPN solution enables established carriers, IP-oriented ISP/CLECs, and large enterprise customers (LECs) to reach a broader set of potential VPN customers and offer truly global VPNs.
Layer 2 VPN Architectures is a comprehensive guide to consolidating network infrastructures and extending VPN services. The book opens by discussing Layer 2 VPN applications utilizing both AToM and L2TPv3 protocols and comparing Layer 3 versus Layer 2 provider-provisioned VPNs. In addition to describing the concepts related to Layer 2 VPNs, this book provides an extensive collection of case studies that show you how these technologies and architectures work. The case studies include both AToM and L2TPv3 and reveal real-world service provider and enterprise design problems and solutions with hands-on configuration examples and implementation details. The case studies include all Layer 2 technologies transported using AToM and L2TPv3 pseudowires, including Ethernet, Ethernet VLAN, HDLC, PPP, Frame Relay, ATM AAL5 and ATM cells, and advanced topics relevant to Layer 2 VPN deployment, such as QoS and scalability.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book for L2-VPN basics.......2006-03-30
I used this book as one of my reference books for CCIE service provider written exam. This book covers basics of Layer 2 VPNs especially AToM, L2TPv3, VPLS, and Local Switching.
Great Book!.......2006-03-25
The examples along with the testing methodology, and the overall layout of the topics flow very nicely. This is a must read for anyone considering Layer 2 MPLS, or L2TPv3 Architecures.
Layer 2 VPN Architectures.......2005-05-24
For any person involved with designing or maintaining L2 VPNS "Layer 2 VPN Architectures" is a must. While I must admit that I use most of my books as reference, this book is an easy read for those persons who are trying to learn the various L2 VPNS options available. The book begins with a background of VPN architectures and follows with a background and overview of the different Layer 2 protocols. An in depth discussion of AtoM, Anything over MPLS, L2TPv3 and VPLS are presented to the reader.
The authors use case studies to fully explain the technology to the reader. Each case study builds on the other making for a very logical flow of each technology, including configuration examples and screen shots for a clearer explanation. The configuration examples and illustrations are numerous making this a great reference book as well as a learning tool.
Each of the three parts starts with a basic configuration and then slowly builds to a more complex example. As mentioned, the screen shots and the configuration snippets make it very easy to go from one case study to the next. The authors go to great links to explain all the command options and parameters. This assists the reader in obtaining a clearer understanding of the objective.
For the discussions on AToM and L2TPv3 the authors include the LAN and WAN protocols that can be transported over the two technologies. They give the reader an in-depth understanding of the command options available as well as why they should be used.
As a Cisco instructor this book has been very valuable in adding to the Service Provider oriented classes I teach. Anyone involved with MetroEthernet should read this book, as it will present all the technological options available. It will also help them in tuning their network. If you have aspirations on achieving a CCIE in the Service Provider space this book is a definite read for the Service Provider MES Written.
Overall I would rate this book a 5. I have a bookshelf full of Cisco Press books and this is one of the better ones I have.
