I learned many things from this book. I was surprised
at the great points and information this book had to offer.
I recommend that any officer of a organization give this book a try and see how it helps you. What a resource and I enjoyed it very much. Just trying to get new members in our organization is difficult and this book offered many ways to do that.
Every volunteer organization needs this book.......1999-06-30
As a person who has been trying to give my time and talent to a large northwestern organization for the last six months, I highly recommend this reading to their volunteer coordinators. They have successfully made very mistake Rusin points out in this excellent book. It should be required reading!
Excellent advice for those working with volunteers.......1999-05-16
I haven't always known the best way to approach volunteers, and this book provides some excellent ways to help me mazimize their talents. It is easy to read and has a good flow and logic, asks some tough questions yet provides possible solutions. I found the book filled with humor and I highly recommend that if you have to recruit volunteers, or work with them, this book will get you going down the right path.
A must for those dealing with volunteers.......1999-05-16
Working with volunteers can be a most challenging yet gratifying struggle. Jo Rusin's book puts in writing the secrets of recruiting, training, motivating, and retaining volunteers. This is a great book, one I know will prove highly successful. It came through when I really needed this information.

Customer Reviews:
Great if you are starting/ running a swim team.......2007-08-18
First, this book was written with good intentions, and if you are starting a swim team or other organizations and you want to avoid dealing with shady people, etc. I would recommend reading it. However if you are looking for a book with general Not-for-Profit information in it, I felt this book fell short for me. The summary and all the similar glowing comments led me to buy the book, but in my opinion, the book is not well organized, and doesn't really provide the general information I was looking for to help my NFP knowledge. My Not-for-Profit is not in the sports arena, and so a good portion of the book wasn't really relevant. Kudos to the author however for her advocacy for safety of our young ones!
Excellent--.......2007-03-03
This is a book about real things that happened to a nonprofit, a case study. Those who are bad guys will be exposed or found out because this book tells you how to do it. Some things are universal about all nonprofits, and it is what goes on in them after they are formed that can be good or bad. Bylaws, articles of incorporation, are in here, loads of forms and examples--even a form from Australia. Specific state requirements can differ and this book explains that while going over federal laws and statutes. Keep your library complete---If you want a complete look at what can happen (and did happen) in a nonprofit and what your rights and liabilities are---and want to be taken step by step in what to do when it happens and how to prevent it, and if your group works with children, especially, then this is the book you should read and really need.
The Best!.......2007-02-24
My reviews, which are good ones, keep getting removed from this site by someone. I do not know why this is happening. I am not the author of the book. I know the author of the book. If I thought something was wrong with this book, I would say it.
A major university in the United States, BYU, uses this book in its public management class. It is a very good book, and it is thorough.
The book is loaded with examples of forms from Articles of Incoporation, to bylaws and even insurance waivers.
The book goes from creation to maintaining a nonprofit corporation, and the description is true to its title as well as its description.
It tells you how to recognize embezzlement and how to prevent it, and it tells you how to recognize if a child molester is in your midst. This information is invaluable if you are running an organization involving children, such as a sport booster club for a team--which is the theme of this book.
THIS IS AN IMPORTANT BOOK TO OWN.
Remember BYU uses this book in one of its graduate public management graduate classes, so do you need a higher recommendation?
The book isn't good because of its layout. The book is good because it is informative and tells you what your rights, liabilities and responsibilities are!
Great for school organizations.......2007-02-15
I bought this hoping for some great information on a Non-profit that I am now managing. This book has great information on how to work with a non-profit involving schools or childrens activities. I could only use some of the information for my purposes.
From a swim coach perspective.......2006-06-25
I have a background in swimming and coaching. This book came highly recommended to me from a fellow coach. The information in here was eye opening. It helped me better understand the world that I am apart of and better prepare me to avoid the pitfalls of non-profit sports organizations. It was easy to understand and memorable.

A Great Book.......2000-12-28
This is a wonderful book for first time college students. It's an interactive book that jokes about the college experience, and prompts the reader to play along. By adding pictures and filling out pages, this book can be made into a college scrapbook, to highlight your college adventures. All the different subjects were hillarious! I loved the food group pyramid and the altered nursery rhymes. As a college freshman I could relate, and I thought it was great!
Book Description
Rapper Kool Mo Dee thrived during hip-hop’s nascent years as a vocalist whose tongue-twisting rhymes and speedy delivery put his counterparts to shame. On his 1987 album, How Ya Like Me Now, Kool came up with a ‘hip-hop report card’: a method of rating MCs (Emcees, Masters of Ceremonies, Master Communicators, or rap vocalists) as a way of separating the premier MCs from their often one-dimensional, overrated counterparts (“Sucka MCs”). Building on this original list, Kool has put together an extensive rating system to compile the definitive list of the greatest MCs of all time. Kool rates each MC based on seventeen different categories, ranging from the artist’s lyricism, vocabulary, and freestyling ability to his longevity, body of work, and social impact. Each artist is given a numerical score from one to ten in each of the seventeen categories, as well as an explanation for how this rating was determined. The book includes a complete discography and full-color photograph for each MC, and will also have supplemental lists, such as the top ten storytellers and top ten rhymers.

Definitely Not A God Writing The Book.......2007-08-11
I made it a priority of mine to get this book. I read the intro, and I thought I was going to read one of the most intelligent discourses of hip-hop in the field of ranking of emcees. And I must say, I was greatly disappointed.
The book does provide some interesting info on certain artists and overviews of their careers. He even highlights how innovative certain artists were in the department of lyrics and flows, and how others excelled and impacted the genre. The one positive thing I can say about the book is this. It strictly judges emcees in technical abilities (lyrics, flow, substance, charisma, etc.). Production is completely thrown out the window as a factor. Therefore, he set-up an interesting rating system.
But the book falters greatly in the rankings themselves and the amount of points granted in the ratings for certain artists. Kurupt before Slick Rick? Kurtis Blow before DJ Run? Latifah before Pac? Mack 10 on this list? Will Smith number 23? It is disgusting.
One thing that had me confused was how he said, Rakim is the greatest emcee of all-time. Yet he was number 2. And put Melle Mel ahead of him simply off the strength that Mel was one of the first to rhyme at a high level. Too many inconsistencies from Mr. Moe Dee. It's a good read but the ratings are way off.
Great, but i disagree.......2007-04-06
alot of the top ratins are rated well, but when he gets downs the list wit the more main stream rappers, i think he gets way off. for example he says ice cube has no metaphors in his lyrics, when ice cube is the king of metaphors. He also puts fat joe, foxy brown, jay-z, will smith, busta rhymes, snoop dogg, lil' kim and mac 10 in the list, i have no idea why. I cant believe he put them in the list and not Dre, eminem, B-real and other such rappers. Im guessin he didn't put in some good underground rappers because they didn't make it big in the game. I personally think krs is the best MC but i can see why he didn't make it to #1 (u gotta look at the stats and how he rates it to understand why, so look at that b4 u start to disagree). It's still very interestin so i gave it 5 stars.
Good Book, But............2007-03-12
Good Book but I disagree with some of the rankings and some of the people who made the list and some who did not.
KMD did a good job on breaking down the way the emcees were effective, but I disagree with somethings in this book.
For instance how can Foxxy Brown & Lil Kim be on the list, when Andre 3000 & Eminem are not. How is Will Smith rated above Busta.
I do like how he did pay respect to the old school, many rappers who are not well known but who truly belong on this list.
The main thing I disagree with is Rakim's ranking. Rakim should have been number 1. Rakim is your favorite rapper's, favorite rapper. True there are other rappers who may have things that Rakim does not have, but his all around skill is so great that he more than makes up for it.
But all around this book should be on the shelf of every true hip hop head, who knows and understands the history behind the music.
For real aspiring true school emcees only and not for just fans........2006-08-13
First of all this book is only for people you actually have a mature level of reading comprehension and discipline, who are true aspiring emcees with a passion for the craft of lyricism, who are actual hip hop enthusiasts who STUDY and LIVE the CULTURAL ROOTS since it truly embarked on the world around 1972-1974, and who are not just fans due to mainstream hype and fantasyof the material world.
If you are a Tupac fan you should be offended by Mo Dee's personal rankings because that is what your heart has been consumed with in your collection or peer influences based on your age group. In your eyes maybe Tupac never did any wrong. Maybe you never read his interview in Vibe magazine during 1995 or 96 (Ricky Powell) behind bars in Riker's Island for rape saying "thug life is dead" confessing the act was to sell records. Not taking away from the artist that he truly is just blasting the nieve perception of Tupac the juvenile fantasy. Believe this, Tupac, could have been greater if he did not take the industry high road of marketing fake images for less money like Rakim and KRS. Maybe Tupac would also still be alive today.
If you failed to read Chuck D's prolouge; failed to read Mo Dee's foreward and afterward to establish his thesis and end his POV; and you dared to jump to top 10 rankings to see if your "boy" or "girl" made it there on his list (because you have your own list which consists of a short history of experience)then you should be offended! Rule of thumb, "never start cutting the backyard until the frontyard is done first!"
I am now considered an old school head when I ripened in the culture from the mid to late 1980's, but was born in it from the early seventies because that was life for what it was then until now. I am an all around Hip Hop Culture Artist as a graf writer, emcee, and producer. Only thing I did not fully do was DJ, and break. I was too much of an illustrator and lyricist with an ear for tracks I wanted to write my rhymes to.
Me and my old crew have debated the future of Hip Hop for years since the late 90's with all the studio gangsta and crunk rappers bling blinging all over the place.Image is not everything just a part, and as much as many charts and music magazines get bought out of calling an album a 2.5 star for a 4 star rating (over a gram of cocaine and some champagne roomtime) 85% of the current total Hip Hop population would never know the truth of who is really good. Hype has replace your sense of talent because hype does not rely on intellect or true appreciation of substance.
Hype is like only eating McDonald's cheesebugers as your beef source your whole life and never eating grilled sirloin because there was not a clown serving it to you out of a drive thru window with sugar on top.
This book was written in 2003. Eminem and Ludicrous at that time only made 1 or 2 albums to truly be considered. In the mid 90's Chino XL did not do enough, and I believe he hurt himself more for releasing a Tupac diss just a week or 2 before his death in Vegas. He was really good. I do feel Big L should have been on the list, too, over Pun when it came to dead emcees. Big L was deadly. Maybe just an oversight on Mo Dee or maybe L was not that good live or subject matter and industry impact was not enough to consider. Big L only wrote battles, and Pun did have content. Too many great emcees through the years to discern or see live, too. I do not believe Doug E. Fresh made the list, but Doug E. is a self proclaimed entertainer (than an emcee) who set the throne for Missy Elliot to take. God Bless Her.
Listen, this is not for your average rap fan. This is for the true school heads out there who want to master this craft. This book is about the naked stripped down thruth of Mo Dee's POV. That is it. It is a Technical Emcee Bible from truly one of the great emcees of all time in style, battles, and lyrics. If he writes this book again in 5 years the top 50 will change. This book is not a diss by any means. It is a seed for the future of Hip Hop's safekeeping. Emcees need an enema or an urgency to never quit being a student or to finally become a student. Maybe Pastor Troy really has the gift to write real rhymes if he at least studies this book. You can only go as far as you know and experience.
There are not enough lyricists out there with a sense of art or perfection; pushing the poetic or rhyming envelope. Regardless of the rankings, a true emcee will test Mo Dee's theories. This is not about the greatest all time emcee because Hip Hop is not dead yet. This is alot to do with where we are today from where we came from. If you really want to know how good an emcee is? Turn off the music, and listen to him or her go acapella. Do their words incite visuals and syllables create their own rhythm?
Believe this to be more than likley true: Nas, Tupac, Biggie, Eminem, Xzibit, JayZ, and Pharrell Monche all or would have supported the technical aspect of this book's overall focus and point to save the emcee craft and the Hip Hop culture...
...because fanboys and girls are guilty for killing it because some clown is selling them anything sugary through a drive-thru window.
Really Interesting but.............2006-03-19
If you like H.I.P H.O.P you must get this book. It is very informative to a person who doesn't know as much about this music. Lyrics are cited and they a rated in 17 catagories! But.... the ratings I find are a little off. Listen to this. Big L is not even mentioned!!! One of the greats! I am not a huge eminem fan but the guy is far better than mack 10 or lil kim. Mos and Kweli are great poets and they are not considered better than snoop dogg! Also Guru and Black THought shold have been higher up but what can u do. Towards the end of the countdown the book get a lot better. But anyways it is not for me to decide, when I bought the book i wanted to see Kool Moe Dee's POV and thats what I got. So all in all you must buy it to see and trust me you will learn a lot of stuff. So buy IT!

Book Description
Spanish popular culture is one of the richest in the world. The absence of an efficient ruling class has allowed the people to stamp their personality on all major aspects of the country's life. This book describes the peculiar Spanish feeling for death and tragedy in popular religious practices, music and the bullfight; the "fiesta sense of life," so foreign to the work ethic of other Western countries; the oral tradition that has managed to survive into the post-industrial age with its creative use of slang, proverbs and obscenity; popular literature, the press, radio, television and the movies. Students and scholars will appreciate the first comprehensive treatment of Spanish popular culture in a single volume. The author has done first-hand research in all the major regions of Spain and has compiled a list of major archives and resource centers. An extensive bibliography on the major fields of popular Spanish culture is included at the end of each chapter.

Well-written, Succinct, Informative.......2003-05-27
For some reason that is interesting to contemplate but difficult to quantify, some cultures seem to attract more attention from foreigners, or a certain type of foreigner, than others do. Russian culture is one such; so is Japanese, and so is Spanish. Perhaps it is the sense of irony and tragedy that seems to permeate the history of these cultures.
At any rate, there is no shortage of books on Spanish culture; indeed, one can almost speak of the field as a literary subgenre. The French and the English have probably produced more books on the subject than others have, but the subject has attracted its share of Americans too, from Washington Irving to James Michener.
So one might legitimately question the need for another book on Spanish culture. In this case, there definitely is. With the exception of Russia, there is probably no nation in Europe that has undergone more change in the last century than Spain, and not just due to the Civil War. Not very many people are aware of how much Spanish society has changed since Franco died twenty-eight years ago, reinventing itself from a medieval enigma to a valid member of the European community.
This book deals with Spanish popular culture by topic, reviewing in turn religion, music, sports, popular literature and several other topics. While it reviews the history of these fields summarily, the book's major purpose is to document and shed light on how Spanish popular culture has evolved in the last three decades. While Professor Stanton makes use of statistics, this book is not an essay in sociological analysis; the book is eminently readable and enlightening, despite its relatively short (238 pages) length.
If it's such a good book, why only four stars? Simple: the price. At this price the publisher is virtually ensuring that the only buyers for this book will be institutional libraries. This is a real shame, since this is not some scholarly effort that would appeal to an extremely limited audience, but rather a book that should be required reading for anybody interested in Spanish culture. I can only hope that a less expensive version will eventually appear.

Customer Reviews:
Easy to read, but ..........2006-05-23
I've not decided to get this one before because i already had a couple of SQL books for the 70-228 (Unleashed, 70-228 for Dummies and SQL in 10 min from Ben Forta) book's reviews were not so good either. But ... i went to a major book store last night and i was able to hold the book on my own hands and read some chapters. My 1st impression, after read a few pages quickly, was a good one. Nice explanations...a lot of graphics (i love that, it helped me a lot when i'm studying) It's the kind of book you like to read and you enjoy the lecture at same time. But ... but ... it is not complete and it just gave a quick brief on most of topics.
My advice is to get this one only if you already have another book source too (let's say SQL Unleashed). You simply won't pass using this book only. It's a nice book (EXCELLENT EXPLANATIONS AND GRAPHICS) but can't be your main choice.
DEFINITELY Incomplete Information.......2005-11-27
I bought this book because 1)I have absolutely ZERO experience with Microsoft SQL 2000 and 2)I have used Sybex books in the past to help me gain knowledge of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, of which I have passed all exams.
However, with this book I am very dissappointed. Examples are imcomplete, not clear and generally leave the reader hanging as to what to do next. More often than not, when working my way through the excercises I have to go to the SQL page on the Microsoft website and try and find the information that was left out of the book. It's a tremendous waste of time and very frustrating. If the authors of this book want to assume that every reader out there already has knowledge of how SQL server is installed and administered, then they should be writing handbooks and pocket guides for existing IT administrators and engineers.
Like many people out there who are working on a certification, I bought this book to learn the ins-and-outs of SQL installation and administration. As such, I need to understand every step as much as possible. Unfortunately both the authors and Sybex have failed me this time.
Good Contents.......2005-04-03
Coming from Oracle background I am currently using this book to prepare for my MCDBA certification. I would not rate myself as beginner because I have dealt with MS SQL Server on many occasions but not heavily. I am pacing myself with one chapter a day. So far I read about 5 chapters and I would admit that the content is good. Like any other technical book, this one also has some mistakes. In my case I started seeing the mistake on pages 145 and 146. On those pages the authors stated that to see the file id you need to run in the SQL Analyzer the stored procedure sp_helpdb. That is not true at all it should be sp_helpfile. I caught that mistake quickly because I really understood the previous information given and related to file, and I also tested the stored procedures listed in the book. I did check the errata on sybex website nothing is listed concerning that mistake but there are some other corrected mistakes though on the website.
As I always do I don't rely on one source for my certification exams. I have got another book and I am planning to get a third one too. I will go through all of them before I go take the exam end of May. I will try to post another review after I took exam.
My overall impression on this book is the book is well-written and easy to follow. So far I am getting useful information out of the book. And that helps me understand the objectives on the exam. I am doing pretty good with the review questions at the end of the chapters. After going through half of the book I think I like what I see and I would recommend this book but not as the only source to study for the exam.
Explanations Incomplete.......2005-02-25
This book is very uninspired. The layout is pretty good, but I am finding lots of places where there are incomplete explanations which causes lots of wasted time. If you already know the product that wouldn't be bad, but then you wouldn't need this book. Look for a better baisc Admin book.
Good Tutorial, Bad Test Prep.......2004-06-09
I really enjoyed this book. It's explaniations are incredibly good and it explains SQL Server very well.
However, the exam questions suck.
Two Examples:
Page 230: Question 4 - It says the correct answer is D, but there is no such command as sp_grantaccess ( It should be sp_grantdbaccess )
Page 232: Question 8 - again, there is no such command as sp_activateapprole, it's sp_setapprole.
I could go on, but it's really frustrating trying to use a book for an exam when it misleads like this.
