Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource, but full book is better overall.......2007-04-14
This is an excellent workbook resource for those who don't want to spend the time and money to read the full book and do the excercises there (although I would recommend that as a first choice). I did like this slim resource though, and bought multiple copies to use with my patients in a vocational program -- they loved thinking through the exercises, but I needed to explain many portions for them because the guidelines are rather broad at times, and too specific at others. If I hadan't guided several them through the exercises, it would have been worthless. The full book is a far richer and better resource, and gives you much more to think about -- but this is a good workbook approach that summarizes the main exercises in the full book. A hint -- there is one exercise (Very time consuming) that you can skip -- the first exercise asks you to write 5 life stories, then examine them for commonalities in skills -- You don't need the stories to do the ratings at all.
If you've got the regular text, you don't need this..........2007-02-22
I though this would provide more info than the book ("What Color Is Your Parachute?") but what's inside are the same exercises... so if you have the book or are getting it, then you don't need this. On the other hand, if you don't want to read all of the insightful text of Bolles's original book, then this is a nice book of exercises! :) [I'd just recommend the original text, though.]
What Color Is Your Parachute Workbook.......2007-02-14
The book is mostly limitless propaganda. I had to order it for a career building course.
Just do it!.......2007-01-12
This was recommended to my by my sister as being more useful than the book of the same name. So I got the book from the library and the workbook from Amazon. What my sister didn't mention that there is a lot of work to do! I am not finished yet but it is good to go through this mid-career reassessment of where I am.
It has been helpful to see and remember what my gifts and areas of strength are.
I may end up changing nothing about my life but at least then it will be something I have chosen rather than just slid into!
Great Resource.......2007-01-04
This is a great resource to use in conjunction with the ground breaking "What Color is Your Parachute" used for years to help people find work they truly enjoy.

Book Description
By bringing together results from the growing literature in econometrics on misspecification testing, this study provides theoretical analyses and convenient methods for the implementation of tests in applied work. Although the main emphasis is on the Lagrange multiplier principle, several other approaches are discussed and the relationships among different methods are examined. The author reviews general checks of model adequacy that do not involve the formulation of an alternative hypothesis. General and specific tests are discussed in the context of multiple regression models, systems of simultaneous equations, and models with qualitative or limited dependent variables. This wide-ranging but integrated book will be useful to a wide audience of applied and theoretical researchers, graduate students, and professional economists.

Book Description
Poverty and the Third Way uncovers how New Labour's employment-focussed approach causes, rather than resolves, poverty. Searching for another approach, the authors find the seeds of an alternative 'third way' in radical European social democratic and ecological thought which seeks to transcend capitalism and socialism by developing work beyond employment. Exploring the reasons why such an approach is needed and how it can be implemented, the authors transcend the 'there is no alternative' to capitalism school of thought dominant in many advanced economies by providing a clearly marked route map of the towards a post-capitalist economy.

Book Description
NO MATTER HOW MUCH WE LOVE HER, most of us swear to ourselves that we're never going to be anything like Mother. But sooner or later, we discover that we have inherited not only her voice and eyes and curly hair, but her habits and philosophies are beginning to show through as well. And finally, the worse of all--we say something that makes us put our heads in our hands and acknowledge the truth: we sound just like Mama. In Oh, Lord, I Sound Just Like Mama, Alpern and Blumenfeld have pulled together a hilarious collection of quotes and anecdotes from every sort of mother (and daughter). There's the chapter on children, in which one exhausted mother says, "I pray for boredom, but it never comes." In the chapter on marriage, one mother says, "All I ever got out of this marriage was dishes, grease, and garbage--and, of course, my children." Still another woman tells her daughter: "My wedding was not mine, it was my mother's. Yours will be mine." There's also a section on the sayings and recollections of such famous daughters and mothers as Julia Child, Phyllis Diller, Helen Gurley Brown, Roberta Flack, Glenda Jackson, Madeline Kahn, Loretta Lynn, Liz Carpenter, Helen Hayes, and many more. Full of fun and nostalgia, this is the perfect gift book to be give to Mother and from Mother.

I Am My Mother Afterall.......2003-02-28
What a delightful way to bring back memories of Mom. A chuckle filled look at the many things mom said that we said we wouldn't but did anyway! Really enjoyable. I've just found another favorite author. I hope Lynne Alpern has written more books. I like her style.
Oh Lord, I Have Become My Own Mama!.......2001-03-15
Light and entertaining reading that takes you back to your childhood with fond memories. Every child says they will NEVER be like their Mother, but we all end up there anyway. This book is a definite little treasure!!
Great look at our Moms, and what we have to look forward to!.......1999-01-06
I loved this book! The southern wit and wisdom will have you chuckling out loud as you read this cute book. You will realize that no matter how hard you resist, you will still turn into your Mom. Not that there is anything wrong with that!! highly recommended reading. Cute stories brought back memories of my childhood in KY. Very heartwarming reading.

Customer Reviews:
About as interesting as filing taxes.......2004-07-18
The author seems to have a lot in common with Dan Barker, an atheist I briefly met a few years ago during a visit to the University of Wisconsin--Stevens Point. Mr. Barker didn't make much of an impression on me then (although I did get a free copy of his book), and Andrew Bushard didn't make much of an impression on me with his own attempt at a book here. You might actually be better off flipping on the tube and watching QVC for a while--even if you bought an overpriced set of patio chairs you still wouldn't be gettting nearly as ripped off as you would from the ideas in this book.
What?.......2004-07-18
This book is a flurry of poorly founded phantasms based on an eclectic yet passe look at the globe, from a perspective of a sociological snail. The bigger question from this book would better be stated as "why, since this movement is so 'blossoming,' has it only been at two different campus locations, with nearly no following whatsoever?" As Andrew clearly states in his book, he only lives for so-called 'satire' and 'pranks,' so is life nothing more than a joke to him?
Andrew claims to have great understanding and 'wisdom' but really all he is about is rants on his own misunderstandings.
Justice?.......2004-07-13
This was merely a juvenille example of bankrupt vilification pertaining to the Dutch class struggle, as well as post-modernity under the guise of nihilistic expressionism. Mr. Andrew Bushard clearly seems to be confused about his Nordic impulses.

Customer Reviews:
Knowledge with understanding is close to wisdom ***.......2004-09-17
This book gets 5 stars for its research effort and zero for wisdom. The author spent a whole day interviewing Werner on Sept. 15, 1991. Too bad this lady author didn't publish her 7-hour taped conversation with Werner. May be her next book?
Interesting that another lady wrote a review on the 3rd anniversary of 911. May be like 911 the lady read the book too quickly and didn't notice that this lady author has already provided the answers to her question in the book.
The first 2 daughters retracted their story while the third one most probably with cohesion with her husband disappeared.
What I find funny is that Werner bothered to take a lie detector test before the March 3, 1991 CBS show. In reality even before the show Werner made preparation to leave the country & EST. The gift of that 60-minutes was to re-enforce the already started process of Werner leaving EST in the hands of the capable hands of his trained coaches that were to form Landmark & Forum.
Just like certain people can see the benefit of Dalai Lama forced to leave Tibet in order to spread the Tibetan version of Buddhism with all its mystical illusions.
As to why his own 3 out of 7 children proclaimed that their natural deserting daddy is a child molester on the 60-min show can be easily explained by Werner's 'own fall from heaven story' which is described in my review of "Werner Erhard Transformation of a man: the founding of EST". That is simple, 44 years later, cause and effect and an example of the pervasiveness of every one's own 'fall from heaven story' in one's own life.
Because of that gift, EST & FORUM can't be said to be cult, since the founder disbanded EST & is now only a researcher that's drawing his revenues from his rigidly crafted & copyrighted course design.
Only a few of the Forum attendees and even coaches bother to read Werner's biography or even heard of his name. By definition a cult must be around a central figure, like Bush's son or Reagan or Hitler, etc, who is supposedly providing central security and correctness for all participants while at the same time at war with all non-participants in the name of future equality and peace. Instead of present equality and peace.
I saw when I met Werner in Japan in 1996, he was being served food while his close attendants were sat with no food in front of them. This is the only thing I didn't like about the hierarchy of coaches vs. attendees or volunteers. There is no equality.
Although I do understand & appreciate that the coaches in 1996, now more to 50 of them according to LandmarkEducation, earned only a paltry $50k annual salary for their original effort and real contribution to humankind. I don't see any reason that they're treated as upper-class, like the apprenticeship for the very hierarchical Japan's Sumo wrestlers or Japan's own very untouchables Buraku sect or any royalty or upper-classmanship. That's feudalism not wisdom.
Werner by choosing Japan, without China. as its audience is making the same mistake as Gandhi. Gandhi chose to use his life energy of non-violence toward the English establishment and could have also chosen for breaking through India's more than 2,000 years tradition of inequality as preserved in the various sects from Brahman to Untouchables. A longer lasting & larger contribution to humankind.
Naturally although "equality" is the cry for emancipation of all revolutions from the Bastille to the US Declaration of Independence to the Communist revolutions the world over. Once the revolutions were over, there was no more mention of "equality"! Why? Is it to preserve the new status quo of a new upper class instead of what the revolution called for EQUALITY?
Get A Clue.......2004-09-17
What nonsense. Don't believe me? See if you can find anything else written by author "Jane Self, PhD" And check out the rest of the catalog from "Breakthru Publishing." If you think Werner Erhard was run out of town by the scientologists, ask him why he "made himself a victim," or "created his own victimization," why don't you? This is just another feeble attempt salvage or rewrite or rearrange the facts of his - Werner Erhard's - sleazy reputation. Est "acolytes" and Landmark "followers" are so desperate to prop up an image of their hero they will believe anything. Even this kind of garbage.
So what happened next?.......2004-07-22
The book is well researched and collects plenty of hard to find information in one place. The narrative connects the dots in a way the leaves Erhard's reputation intact (using Erhard's meaning of reputation, relayed somewhere in the book), even as we watch his media image go from bad to terrible. This is an important contribution to the historical record. No matter how cynical one is about Erhard, he deserves to have a say in how the story of his own life gets told (even as he works to remain above the "soap opera" in his philosophical outlook).
'60 Minutes' got its chance. Now we get a low budget response by a journalist who is up front about her agenda.
I'm writing this in 2004, long after the events in this book transpired. Charlene Afermow, mentioned in the book as a member of the anti-Erhard camp (and one my trainers -- Walter Kaufmann and David Raymond enrolled me at Princeton in the late 1970s), is still with Landmark as I understand it (my friend Sara says she led her advanced course). That's interesting. How did that defamation lawsuit filed by Werner's lawyer in a Chicago court turn out? In the book, it's still pending, as was one of the tax court cases.
Again, regardless of one's opinion of Erhard, whether based on first hand knowledge, or a picture of human nature and gurudom in general, he is/was a pivotal figure in my life time. A lot of energy was expended by a lot of people around the programs and organizations he worked to establish, for better or for worse (my own opinion is for better).
I also wonder if Self (the author) has an overly limited view of the scope of the anti-Erhard camp. Sure, the Scientology organization was out to get him at many levels (not true of all scientologists), but perhaps he was considered a threat by others as well -- a global network, connections in the Soviet bloc, rubbing shoulders with policy makers, and in the 1980s, the overlap with Buckminster Fuller. I could see this making a lot of people uncomfortable, besides Church of Scientology execs.
The Whole Truth And Nothing But The Truth.......2004-04-17
If ever a truer book was ever written about Werner Erhard and Scientology this is it. The sad thing is Scientology's leadership succeeded in eliminating him as a competitor. The good thing is, he was planning to leave anyway. Jane Self is a writer with the courage to fully investigate a story and to leave no stone unturned. As someone who worked inside Werner Erhard's organization, and was around when the events of this book occurred, I attest to its accuracy and honesty. Why am I writing this anonymously? I don't want them coming after me like they went after Werner Erhard.
why try so hard?.......2003-12-30
It amazes me no end how hard the cultists of cultism work to try to bad-mouth the est Training & Werner Erhard and the new Landmark Education Forum, as in a few reviews below. I did the est Training in 1978 and have been using the technology of transformation in my life every day since, something the cultists cannot fathom. And that is so even when I'm not able to participate in Landmark courses, such as the multi-week seminars. I saw a redneck bigot give up his bigotry in a weekend during the CAP Course, and that was not even a covered topic -- the man moved from racial slurs to asking to hug the 250-pound black man that he had offended the day before.
I honor Werner Erhard and the est/Landmark technology because it happens to work quite well when applied to one's life. Didn't work for a reviewer below? Maybe because he needs a reason for his life not working... My life might be full of tribulation, but applying the Landmark technology turns things around every time.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource for Reason Users.......2005-08-02
After weeks of guesswork and tooling about, on Reason 2.5, I opted to buy this guide. Boy am I glad I did. Prager lays it all out, plain and simple. Informative, but language, easy-to-use diagrams, little-known tips, and a clearly-marked chapter for each virtual instrument in the program make this book an excellent choice for beginning and intermediate Reason users.
A Great Tutorial.......2005-02-18
I'm not extraordinarily gifted in regards to all things digital, so I tend to "lose it" if any tutorial gets too clinical.
Michael Prager injects the perfect amount of humanity (spelled humor and familiarity) into the pages of this book.
He is thorough enough for the gifted while encouraging to the rest of us.
I don't usually write reviews, but I have another book from another author... I think from the same publisher. This one is head and shoulders above it!
This book is being discounted because of the introduction of Reason 3.0. In my opinion, unless Prager magically comes up with an update in no time, I would spend the few bucks this one costs and worry about the new stuff later.
This book is just that good.
Pretty good.......2004-03-10
I've read the Visual Quickstart on CuBase SX this week as well.
This book is also put together well, and is quite readable, though I found it's more of a reference than a walk-through.
Its the only book on Reason 2.5 I own so far, and it fit it's purpose on my shelf as a resource.
All within Reason 2.5.......2004-02-23
Finally somebody has written an easy to understand tutorial/instructional book on one of the best music compositional programs ever created. Mr Prager covers every part of Reason 2.5 in a very "user friendly" way. I can honestly say that "now I get it!" thanks to Reason 2.5 Power!
All Things Within Reason.......2004-01-09
Propellerhead Software's virtual midi workstation Reason is truly a thing of beauty, as well as a daunting package at first; this is especially true if, like me, your last experience of midi and music technology was about 12 years ago and you're trying to get caught up. Thanks to Reason, the technology has changed for the better, because now all those devices can be contained in one's desktop monitor. Still, when I first installed and opened up the program, I was overwhelmed with a sense of getting more than I'd bargained for.
Fortunately, also such is the case with Michael Prager's comprehensive book-that-should-have-been-in-the-box, Reason 2.5 Power! I found it while browsing in a local bookstore, glanced over the section on quantizing, thumbed through a couple more pages, and before I knew it the book was in the bag. Prager's friendly title not only makes the reader see how simple the program is to use, but also gets one genuinely excited about learning it in depth. His enthusiasm about creating music with these tools is very infectious.
Reason is not so much a program as it is a suite of interchangeable, configurable components: appropriately, Reason 2.5 Power! is both a user manual and a collection of tutorials on how to make the most of each of these components, as well as use them together. You can read the chapters in any order, depending on which device you want to learn, and easily find what you're trying to do with each of your virtual rack devices. Example: in the chapter on the sequencer, early on in the book, we are shown how to create rhythm patterns on one of the drum machines either on the machine's controller, or using a music keyboard to input (my personal preference).
Reason 2.5 is several functional modules in one droolingly productive package; Reason 2.5 Power! is several operation manuals and tutorials masquerading as chapters in one of the most useful complimentary computer books for a powerhouse program I've seen. Combine the above, mix well, and hear the sweet music.

Reason is a computer-based music production studio that contains a full complement of synthesizers, drum machines and audio effects. This will be the first book on the market to cover the major new features in version 2.5 of Reason. Readers can expand their sonic palettes by applying the advice of a recognized Reason guru, and they will learn the audio concepts behind these effects so they can become experts in sound innovation.

Good tips, but poorly organized as an instruction book.......2005-03-21
Maybe I've been spoiled by the excellent tutorials in Apple's Pro Training Series (e.g., Final Cut Pro HD) books. The way the concepts are presented and then immediately followed with step by step tutorials (including pictures of many steps) is superb for learning. Mr. Kurasaki's book doesn't quite measure up in this respect. There's a lot of text to wade through in some chapters that begs an *immediate* example to illustrate the concept. Also it would have been nice if some of the more lengthy examples could have been included on the CD-ROM, since some of them take some time to get programmed, esp. some of the Matrix data. I'm still searching for a really good intermdiate/advanced Reason tutorial. Hopefully with the arrival of Reason 3 something will emerge. As for this book, I'm giving it three stars for useful content and withholding two stars for its organization and examples.
Excelente compra!!

Filled with useful and unusual ideas.......2004-08-08
As has been noted by previous reviewers, Power Tools for Reason 2.5 is not for beginners. In this guide, you will find a wealth of information about how to create sophistated and unsual instrument/effect routings that will greatly expand your musical palette.
The bulk of the book focuses on Reason's different CV routing possibilities, and you really can achieve a lot by treating the entire Reason rack as if it were one big modular synthesizer.
I do have a couple of criticisms. I was hoping for more information, tips, and tricks for working with Subtractor and Malstrom. There is actually surprisingly little here about working at the synthesizer level. My second criticism is that some of the CV routing diagrams are not explained in much detail. You will definitely have to spend some time studying the diagrams (and not just following the manual's instructions) if you want to understand what is going on.
These are small criticisms considering the great favor Mr. Kuraski has done Reason users by publishing this book. You'll learn a lot here.
Fantastic Book..........2004-07-28
This book is definitely NOT for beginners. I recommend Reason Ignite! or Reason Power! for those just starting out. Better yet, the Reason manual is quite well written, too.
But this book goes way beyond the basics, and requires that you understand how Reason work, and have a fundamental understanding of each device. LOTS of step-by-step tutorials abound, however, not all of the "whys" are explained. Unless you're familiar with Reason already, you'll simply be following these tutorials blindly.
That being said, KK's book goes way beyond simply showing off Reason's best features. His tips and tutorials will actually make YOUR music sound better. This isn't esoteric, oddball stuff...these are advanced things that will become a part of your Reason "vocabulary" and fundamentally change the way your music sounds.
This book is magnificent.
Awesome Reference For Experienced Reason Users.......2004-05-19
Being a user of Reason now for a year, I was looking for material that I could use to add some spark back into my music. After checking out some Reason tutorials that Kurt wrote on the web, I was intrigued and went to his website, only to find that he has written an entire book on the techniques in his tutorials! Every piece of Reason is explained and dissected, with examples and tutorials! If you are looking to take the next step in using Reason, this book is for you! Beginners to Reason may want to hold off on this book until they have a grasp on basic usage, as there are some assumptions of technique in here.

More of an introduction than a walkthrough..........2005-04-25
I bought this book as a new Reason user, and the book does little more than give you a cursory inspection of the components found in Reason. It does a poor job of getting you started with the software, and there is no real inpiration or intrigue you might hope for. If you're a beginner, consider buying Reason 2.5 Power! It is a much better choice with a more in-depth analysis and a certain motivational element about it.
A waste of good money........2004-10-21
Earlier I wrote an extemely negative review of this book, but I cannot find it here. Either Amazon censored it, or I decided against publishing such a negative review on general humanitarian pinciples. Luckily, I can afford to make a mistake. However, if you are watching your dollars, don't buy this book. The only thing that will be ignited is your cash.
Not good if you are just getting started.......2004-04-18
This book is nothing but an explanation of what comes with Reason 2.5 Its not worth buying if you are new user and want an indepth understanding of the software. Even the manual that comes with the software was better than this book.
Reason 2.5 Ignite! Excellent Resource for Beginners.......2004-03-27
Reason 2.5 Ignite! is an excellent beginner manual for the powerful Reason program. This book is well organized with plenty of visual representations of the software and written in an easy to read step-wise style. If you want to get started with Reason today, this is an excellent book. Advanced Reason users may want to check out Reason 2.5 Power or Power Tools for Reason 2.5.
